Scientists inject fish with alligator DNA to create mutant creatures that live longer

SCIENTISTS have put alligator DNA in catfish to make them live longer.

Millions of fish are harvested across the world each year, but nearly half are killed due to diseases.

However, studies have found that by inserting alligator genes into catfish, their survival chances increase by fivefold.

The gene, dubbed cathelicidin, contains properties that protect reptiles from infections when wounded.

Typically, farmers treat sick fish with antibiotics, but this contributes to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

But now scientists at Auburn University in Alabama are fusing the DNA of the two species.

They detailed their findings on the preprint server bioRxiv. The paper has not yet been peer-reviewed.

Scientists used CRISPR to insert the alligator gene that codes for cathelicidin into catfish.

It found the survival rate of the genetically modified fish was resistant to a common infection.

The fish are also sterile and can’t reproduce unless they are injected with reproductive hormones, MIT Technology reported.

“On a per-pound basis, anywhere from 60 to 70 percent of US aquaculture is… catfish production,” says Rex Dunham, who works on the genetic improvement of catfish at Auburn University in Alabama.

But catfish farming is a great breeding ground for infections, however, thanks to this new method we may see fewer catfish deaths.

What’s more, farming fish that are resistant to disease will produce less waste, aquaculture researcher Greg Lutz from Louisiana State University told MIT.

However, Lutz also pointed out that the CRISPR catfish may not be the future of aquaculture.

“It’s just too difficult to produce enough of these fish to get a viable, genetically healthy line going,” he said.

There are over 3,000 catfish species in the world, and they are mostly bred for human consumption.

Their name refers to the prominent barbels, which resemble a cat’s whiskers.

Chrome extensions with 1.4M installs covertly track visits and inject code

Google has removed browser extensions with more than 1.4 million downloads from the Chrome Web Store after third-party researchers reported they were surreptitiously tracking users’ browsing history and inserting tracking code into specific ecommerce sites they visited.

The five extensions flagged by McAfee purport to offer various services, including the ability to stream Netflix videos to groups of people, take screenshots, and automatically find and apply coupon codes. Behind the scenes, company researchers said, the extensions kept a running list of each site a user visited and took additional actions when users landed on specific sites.

The extensions sent the name of each site visited to the developer-designated site d.langhort.com, along with a unique identifier and the country, city, and zip code of the visiting device. If the site visited matched a list of ecommerce sites, the developer domain instructed the extensions to insert JavaScript into the visited page. The code modified the cookies for the site so that the extension authors receive affiliate payment for any items purchased.

To help keep the activity covert, some of the extensions were programmed to wait 15 days after installation before beginning the data collection and code injection. The extensions McAfee identified are:

As of Wednesday, all five extensions have been removed from the Chrome Web Store, a Google spokesperson said. Removing the extensions from its servers isn’t the same as uninstalling the extensions from the 1.4 million infected devices. People who have installed the extensions should manually inspect their browsers and ensure they no longer run.

Olympic athlete Raven Saunders becomes latest to inject politics into Toykyo games

American silver medalist shot-putter Raven Saunders delivered a political demonstration at the Olympics podium on Sunday in the latest protest at the Tokyo games.

During the photo op at her medals ceremony, Saunders stepped off the podium, lifted her arms above her head and formed an “X’ with her wrists.

“It’s the intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet,” she said when asked what her protest meant.

Saunders, who is openly gay, has often wondered if the Olympics could live up to the mission of diversity.

“To be me. To not apologize,” she said in a wide-ranging conversation after her second-place finish. “To show younger people that no matter how many boxes they try to fit you in, you can be you and you can accept it. People tried to tell me not to do tattoos and piercings and all that. But look at me now, and I’m poppin’.”

Moments after Saunders’s protest, American fencer Race Imboden was also seen with a circled X written on his hand as he went to the podium at a different venue after the U.S. men’s foil team beat Japan in the bronze medal match.

Saunders’s protest comes after a handful of other Olympians demonstrated during the summer games, including players for the U.S. women’s soccer team, who knelt in protest of racism and discrimination ahead of a game with Sweden last month.

“It’s an opportunity for us to continue to use our voices and use our platforms to talk about the things that affect all of us intimately in different ways,” player Megan Rapinoe said after their 3-0 loss to Sweden.

Female British and Chilean soccer players also knelt ahead of a game on July 21 to protest racial inequality.

“We felt strongly as a group that we wanted to show support for those affected by discrimination and equality,” Britain captain Steph Houghton said. “It was a proud moment because the Chile players took the knee too to show how united we are as sport.”

Players for Australia’s women’s soccer team also posed with an Indigenous flag and linked arms last month while their New Zealand counterparts knelt last in protest of racism.

The acts of protests come after the International Olympic Committee had relaxed rules banning demonstrations ahead of Tokyo Olympics, but IOC chief Thomas Bach added that athletes could not protest on the medal stand.

“The podium and the medal ceremonies are not made … for a political or other demonstration. They are made to honor the athletes and the medal winners for sporting achievement and not for their private [views],” Bach said last month.

FRENCH BOXER PROTESTS BY SITTING ON RING APRON AFTER DISQUALIFICATION: ‘THE DECISION WAS SO UNFAIR’

He threatened sanctions for athletes who protest on the podium, but it was unclear what those sanctions would be.

Other forms of protests have also made a showing at the games, with some members of the U.S. men’s fencing team donning pink face masks on Friday in an apparent protest of teammate Alen Hadzic, who has been accused of sexual misconduct. While a French boxer also sat on the Olympic ring apron in protest on Sunday, after a referee disqualified him for intentionally headbutting a British opponent.
