Steam Reaches 10 Million Concurrent In-Game Players for the First Time

Alongside reaching 32 million concurrently online users, Steam has also just surpassed 10 million concurrent in-game players for the first time.

The news was shared by SteamDB, and it shows the milestones were reached on Saturday, January 7, where the in-game concurrents were at 10,082,055 million and the concurrently online users – those who are simply on Steam but not necessarily playing a game – were at 32,186,301.

As for what these millions of people were playing, the #1 played game in the past 24 hours as of this writing was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at 1.08 million concurrent players. Sitting behind Counter-Strike were DOTA 2 (766,096), Goose Goose Duck (605,694), PUBG: Battlegrounds (439,944), and Apex Legends (367,585).

The milestone was reached following the holiday season and the end of one of Steam’s big sales. It also comes at a time where there aren’t any major new game releases.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Steam has seen its record of concurrent users get broken again and again. The peak concurrents during Thanksgiving 2021 was at 27.3 million, and it has continued to grow and grow since then.

Damar Hamlin update: Bills safety has made ‘substantial improvement’ following in-game cardiac arrest, medical team says, but his road to recovery could be long

CNN
 —

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin has made “substantial improvement” in the hospital following his mid-game cardiac arrest on Monday, doctors said, and is now awake and moving his hands and feet.

Hamlin is able to communicate by shaking his head, nodding or writing brief notes, said Dr. Timothy Pritts, part of the player’s medical team. Upon awakening, Pritts said, Hamlin’s mind was still on the game as he scribbled his first question on a clipboard: “Did we win?”

“So, we know that it’s not only that the lights are on, we know that he’s home. And that it appears all cylinders are firing within his brain,” said Pritts, who is vice chair for clinical operations at University of Cincinnati Health where Hamlin is being treated.

Yet the medical team cautioned that many phases of Hamlin’s recovery lie ahead. Hamlin – who had to be sedated and intubated following his collapse – is still critically ill and remains on a ventilator, Pritts said. Physicians did not say precisely when he started waking up.

The 24-year-old player collapsed Monday during the first quarter of the Bills game against the Cincinnati Bengals and was rushed from the field in an ambulance, stunning a packed stadium and leaving his teammates visibly emotional, crying and embracing one another.

The NFL announced Thursday that the game – which was initially postponed Monday night – has been canceled. The league is working on plans to honor Hamlin ahead of every matchup scheduled for this upcoming weekend, two people familiar with the matter told CNN’s Oliver Darcy.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell informed all clubs of his decision Thursday after contacting the Bills, Bengals and NFL Players Association leadership, according to a release from the league.

“This has been a very difficult week,” Goodell said. “We continue to focus on the recovery of Damar Hamlin and are encouraged by the improvements in his condition as well as the tremendous outpouring of support and care for Damar and his family from across the country. We are also incredibly appreciative of the amazing work of the medical personnel and commend each and every one of them.”

Here are the latest developments:

• Hamlin has made “a fairly remarkable recovery,” medical team says: Though Hamlin remains in intensive care, he is demonstrating “good neurologic recovery” and is awake and holding hands with family in the hospital, Pritts said Thursday.

• Tests to determine cause are ongoing: “This marks a really good turning point in his ongoing care,” Pritts said, but “there are many, many steps still ahead of him.” Hamlin’s next big milestone will be breathing on his own without a ventilator, said Dr. William Knight, director of emergency medicine. Tests are still underway to determine the cause of his cardiac arrest, Knight said.

Hamlin lost pulse on the field: While surrounded by medical teams on the field, Hamlin lost his pulse and had to be administered CPR and defibrillation as fans and teammates looked on, Knight said. He was then intubated in the ambulance and arrived at the hospital about 30 to 45 minutes after he collapsed, the doctor added.

Bills are back to work: The team met Wednesday and held their first full practice of the week Thursday in preparation for hosting the New England Patriots on Sunday. The team has been receiving “incremental updates” from medical staff as well as from Bills general manager Brandon Beane and head athletic trainer Nate Breske who stayed behind in Cincinnati, head coach Sean McDermott said. “I think the fact that we just keep hearing good news about Damar, it just keeps pushing us forward,” quarterback Josh Allen told reporters Thursday.

“People are going to be changed forever”: Allen said the players have had “some very open and honest and deep talks” since their teammate was hospitalized Monday. “I think putting that helmet back on was a really good thing for our team,” he said of returning to practice, adding, “But I would be lying to you if I didn’t say, some people are going to be changed forever after being on the field and witnessing that and feeling those emotions.”

News of Hamlin awakening was met with a rush of messages of support and relief from players across the NFL. Since his collapse, supporters have honored the player, donating more than $7 million to his charity fundraiser and making his jersey the most purchased athletes’ jersey at the sports apparel store Fanatics, a company spokesperson said.

Hamlin’s family and Allen have also dismissed online criticisms of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, who had collided with Hamlin just moments before his collapse. The family’s spokesperson has said Higgins has reached out and “has been supportive.”

“I hope that he got some relief today,” Allen said of Higgins while speaking to reporters Thursday. He added, “That’s a football play, and I hope that he doesn’t hold that upon himself, because there is nothing else that he could have done in that situation.”

Doctors and Bills team members have repeatedly applauded the immediate action of medical personnel who rushed to Hamlin just seconds after his collapse.

Bills offensive lineman Dion Dawkins tweeted Thursday that assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington performed CPR on Hamlin as he lay on the field. Coach McDermott also praised the trainer Thursday, saying he saved Hamlin’s life.

“As they say, practice pays off and it did in this case,” McDermott said at a post-practice news conference devoted to Hamlin. “But again, the context of it, for an assistant to find himself at that position and needing to take the action that he did and step up and take charge like he did – and there were others on the field as well – is nothing short of amazing and (the) courage that took, you talk about a real leader, a real hero, in saving Damar’s life.”

In audio obtained by CNN of medical personnel that were working on the sidelines when Hamlin collapsed, personnel can be heard calling for all hands to assist, saying, “I don’t like how he went down” and “We’re going to need everybody.”

NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills attributed the rapid medical response to a “60-minute meeting” that is held among medical teams and NFL officials before every game to identify the location of medical equipment and nearby medical centers, and establish a chain of command in case of an emergency, among other things.

In its announcement of the official cancellation of the Bills-Bengals game that was suspended after Hamlin’s collapse, the NFL detailed parts of its decision-making, including that the outcome of the game would have no impact on teams qualifying for the playoffs.

The Bills and Bengals have already clinched playoff spots but are jockeying for higher seeds in the American Football Conference postseason.

Deciding to play the game would also have forced the league to postpone the start of the playoffs by one week, the NFL release explained, a move that would affect all 14 clubs that qualify.

Lastly, the league said making the decision before Week 18 still allows all clubs to know the playoff possibilities before their final game of the regular season.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf In-Game Cinematic Focuses on Solas and Sets the Stage for the Upcoming RPG

In celebration of Dragon Age Day 2022, BioWare has released an in-game cinematic from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf that sets the stage for the adventures to come.

The cinematic is all about Solas, a playable character in Dragon Age: Inquisition who is clearly one of the main driving forces in the upcoming RPG.

Varric, another playable character who first appeared in Dragon Age 2, narrates the video and tells the story of Solas, who was once known as Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf.

“I knew him as Solas, a thoughtful mage obsessed with dreams, but long ago, he had a different name – Fen’Harel, the Dread Wolf,” Varric narrates. “Ancient Elven God of Lies or heroic rebel against tyranny, depending on which story you believe. In his final fight with the Elven Gods, Solas imprisoned them and created a veil that split our world from the raw magic of the fade. But now, he wants to tear down that veil and destroy the world, and we’re the only ones who can stop him.”

While we still have no release date for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, BioWare did confirm the much-anticipated RPG recently completed its Alpha milestone, meaning the game is now playable from start to finish. That being said, there is still a lot of work and polish to go.

BioWare had a few other surprises in store for Dragon Age Day 2022, including new character posters from Dragon Age: Absolution, the new series set to hit Netflix on December 9, 2022. You can check them out in the slideshow below and a trailer for the show and more details here.

BioWare is also raising money for the Trans Empowerment Project, a “a non-profit organization with a focus on supporting the most marginalized people in the queer community, such as disabled and trans people of color.” BioWare is collecting donations through Tiltify for the non-profit and you can help by clicking here.

Major PC modding sites remove Spider-Man mod that replaces in-game pride flags

NexusMods and ModDB, two of the biggest online sites for PC game mods, have removed a project that cut the in-game pride flags from the recently-released PC port of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. As NexusMods explained in a blog post, the mod was uploaded to its site by a brand new account with no modding history, which the site’s administrators suspect is a secondary account for one of the site’s users — a “sock puppet” account.

“It was very clearly done deliberately to be a troll mod,” NexusMods writes. “The fact the user needed to make a sock puppet like a coward to upload the mod showed their intent to troll and that they knew it would not be allowed. Had they not been a coward and had they used their main account instead, we would have simply removed the mod and told them that we did not want to host it, only banning them if they reuploaded it again after being fairly warned. The creation of the sock puppet removed any doubt and made it a very easy decision for us.”

As well as removing the mod, NexusMods says it’s banned both “the sock puppet account and the user’s main account.” The mod replaced the pride flags found around New York City with the United States flag, which is frequently seen in the original game.

ModDB, another popular source of mods for PC games, also confirmed in a tweet that it’s removed the mod. “ModDB is an inclusive environment for all and we do not permit targeting marginalized groups,” the tweet reads. “Our content moderation is largely automated but when identified, we have a zero tolerance policy for this kind of content.”

“Our policy is thus: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity,” NexusMods says in its post. “If we think someone is uploading a mod on our site with the intent to deliberately be against inclusivity and/or diversity then we will take action against it.” A NexusMods help page notes that “content that may be generally construed as provocative, divisive, objectionable, discriminatory, or abusive toward any real-world individual or group, may be subject to moderation.”

“If this policy upsets you, if we’ve broken some moral code of conduct as a business that you can’t accept, then please, delete your account,” NexusMods writes.

It’s a shame, because the PC modding community has otherwise been on excellent form with the mods they’ve been creating for Insomniac’s Spider-Man title, allowing players to swing around the city as everything from Spider-Man antagonist Kingpin to Black Cat, and there have been plenty of mods to adjust the look and colors of Spider-Man’s iconic suit.

Tasty Steve and James Chen revealed as in-game commentators for Street Fighter 6

Capcom just revealed two new in-game commentators who will be featured in Street Fighter 6: Steve “Tasty Steve” Scott and James Chen.

These two will join fellow English speaking commentator Jeremy “Vicious” Lopez as well as the game’s Japanese commentator, Aru. Check out the reveal trailer below.

This was revealed at the Evo 2022 Street Fighter 6 commentator panel Friday evening. After just a few minutes of introductions, the panel addressed the fact that there were a few empty chairs up on stage. They proceeded to roll the trailer to reveal both Chen and Scott before welcoming them both to join them.

Chen noted that this is very much in step with his long time dream of becoming a cartoon voice actor, but went on to express that this particular venture might be even better.

Here in the trailer you can hear a few of the clips we’ll be hearing while playing Street Fighter 6 (there is an option to turn off in-game commentary if you wish). And yes, you know James Chen’s trademark “Will it kill?” is most definitely included.

Time will tell if Capcom plans to add any additional commentators to Street Fighter 6 before it launches some time next year for PlayStation 4/5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. One does have to wonder if additional languages or more Japanese commentators will be featured.

Let us know what you think of this reveal. Whose voice are you looking forward to hearing most while playing SF6?

Rockstar Parent Company CEO Earns Big Bonus For In-Game Sales

Photo: John Phillips (Getty Images)

Microtransactions in games like Grand Theft Auto Online have become big business for video game publishers. And it’s likely this won’t be changing anytime soon. New details spotted in a recent contract extension for Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explain that the CEO will earn a big bonus if more players spend more money buying in-game items, coins, and skins.

As reported by Axios, a new contract extension for Zelnick means the 64-year-old CEO will continue running Take-Two until 2029. It also lays out how the executive will benefit greatly if games like GTA Online, NBA 2K, and Borderlands get players to spend extra cash on in-game items, referred to in the contract as “recurrent consumer spending” or RCS items. These items are defined by Take-Two’s contract as digital add-on content, in-game items, and virtual currency.

Zelnick could earn millions in stock bonuses if the company and its studios sell enough RCS items to either meet or exceed certain thresholds listed in the contract. Based on financial records, in 2021 Take-Two earned over $1.65 billion from April to December on only microtransactions. In that same span of time, full game purchases brought in only around $890 million. So it’s clear that Take-Two sees MTX purchases like skins and battle passes as an important way to bring in more revenue.

And while this isn’t Zelnick’s first contract to award a potentially large stock bonus for selling more in-game items, the CEO’s performance is now more affected by MTX purchases than before. It’s yet another sign that Take-Two is heavily invested in microtransactions inside its biggest, most popular games.

Kotaku contacted Take-Two asking about the new contract and its bonuses.

It should be noted that CEO performance bonuses and incentives are a common part of contracts for such high-profile and large companies. And Zelnick’s contract extension also lists even larger bonuses if Take-Two’s NASDAQ stock prices go up in the future. So it’s not as if his only concern as the CEO is to make sure you and your friends purchase even more Shark Cards in GTA Online. However, it’s still notable that in-game microtransactions continue to grow and have since seemingly become the dominant way some big publishers are making money in 2022.
