PSVR 2 launch includes only a handful of exclusive titles

Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain is one of the few exclusive titles available for next month’s PSVR 2 launch.”/>
Enlarge / Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain is one of the few exclusive titles available for next month’s PSVR 2 launch.

Those who purchase the PlayStation VR 2, available next month, won’t be able to play their existing PSVR library on the new headset. But they will be able to purchase more than 30 titles on the headset’s February 22 launch and a total of 37 within a month of that launch, Sony announced today.

The initial PSVR 2 lineup is overwhelmingly a sort of “greatest hits” collection of titles available on existing VR platforms. Almost all of the headset’s launch window titles are also available on SteamVR, the Oculus Quest platform, or the original PSVR.

Of the handful of PSVR 2 exclusives, the previously revealed Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain stands out as a first-person adventure in the vein of Half-Life: Alyx. As far as third-party exclusives, Supermassive’s The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR is an on-rails VR roller-coaster akin to the similar Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, while Fantavision 202X is a fully 3D take on the infamous, fireworks-filled PS2 launch title (and will also work without a headset).

Of the remaining PSVR “exclusives” for the time being, two take the form of free VR-compatible updates to existing flat-screen PS5 titles: Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil Village. Then there’s the haunting narrative of Before Your Eyes, which launched on Steam and mobile in recent years but will make its VR debut on the PSVR 2 next month, using the headset’s eye-tracking cameras to monitor the player’s time-controlling blinks.

Enlarge / Say so long to the original PSVR’s glowing blue lights.

While existing PSVR games won’t work by default on PSVR 2, a handful of developers are offering free upgrades for those who purchased games on the older headset: NFL Pro Era, Pistol Whip, Puzzling Places, Song in the Smoke: Rekindled, Synth Riders, and Zenith: The Last City. Those who own Rez Infinite or Tetris Effect: Connected on PSVR, meanwhile, will be able to upgrade to a PSVR 2 version for just $9.99 each.

In addition to eye-tracking and “passthrough” cameras, the $550 PSVR 2 sports a 2000×2400 per-eye resolution, 100-degree field of view, support for HDR colors, and a set of headset motors for tactile effects. The new headset also connects to the PS5 via a single cable, replacing the mess of cables, junction boxes, and external cameras needed for the original PSVR on the PS4.

Here’s a full list of the PSVR 2 launch titles announced so far, including a reference for which other platforms have seen the same games.

January’s Xbox Games with Gold announced, includes a quick completion

Microsoft has announced the Xbox Game with Gold titles for January 2023. Subscribers will be able to grab Xbox One quick completion Iris Fall next week, then colourful automation sim Autonauts later in the month.

Next month’s Games with Gold titles have now been confirmed, offering Iris Fall from next week, followed by Autonauts in mid-January.

Xbox Games with Gold January 2023

Iris Fall (January 1st to 31st)
Autonauts (January 16th to February 15th)

Iris Fall looks to be a quick and easy completion, with the puzzle game sporting a 1-2-hour estimate here on TA. It appears that all 22 achievements can be unlocked rather quickly, and that the game isn’t half bad, either, with a respectable user score of 3.51/5.

Autonauts, meanwhile, looks like a considerably more involved game, and while the automation sim has a fantastic user score of 4.38/5, we don’t have enough data to put an estimate on the full completion. That said, from the few completions we do have on site, it appears that unlocking all 19 achievements here could take 100 hours or more, so you’ll need to spend a good while making a bunch of robots and other contraptions to see this one through.

Don’t forget to grab December Games with Gold title Colt Canyon if you haven’t already too, as it’ll only be available for a couple more days. If none of these take your fancy, check out the best free Xbox games to see if there’s anything there you might enjoy.

What do you make of January’s Games with Gold titles? Let us know!

Wells Fargo settlement includes $2 billion for customers. What to know

wdstock | iStock Editorial | Getty Images

People owed a piece of the $2 billion that Wells Fargo has agreed to pay to customers affected by some of its banking practices could soon receive those funds.

The nation’s fourth-largest bank reached a settlement with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, announced Tuesday, to resolve customer abuses related to auto lending, deposit accounts and mortgage lending, affecting about 16 million accounts.

related investing news

Wells Fargo also agreed to pay a $1.7 billion civil penalty — the largest ever doled out by the CFPB.

“We have already communicated with many of the customers who may have been impacted by the matters covered in the settlement, and those efforts are ongoing,” a Wells Fargo spokesperson told CNBC.

In other words, if you are among the affected customers, you may already have received your share of the $2 billion, or you will automatically hear from Wells Fargo. You do not need to take any action, the bank said.

The CFPB said that customers of the bank were illegally assessed fees and interest charges on auto and mortgage loans, had their cars wrongly repossessed and had payments to auto and mortgage loans misapplied. Additionally, Wells Fargo charged consumers unlawful surprise overdraft fees and applied other incorrect charges to checking and savings accounts, and improperly froze some accounts, the CFPB said.

$1.3 billion has already reached 11 million accounts

More than 11 million customer accounts already have received more than $1.3 billion related to auto loan issues. Another 5 million customers with deposit accounts are receiving $500 million in remediation, including $205 million related to surprise overdraft fees, and thousands of customers with mortgages will receive a piece of at least $195 million, a CFPB spokesperson said.

The amount that each harmed consumer will get (or already got) depends on the specifics. For customers whose vehicles were wrongly repossessed, the remediation includes $4,000, but could be higher. For deposit accounts that were wrongly frozen, the settlement calls for $150 for each affected customer.

“As we have said before, we and our regulators have identified a series of unacceptable practices that we have been working systematically to change and provide customer remediation where warranted,” said Charlie Scharf, Wells Fargo CEO, in the company’s press release about the settlement.

“This far-reaching agreement is an important milestone in our work to transform the operating practices at Wells Fargo and to put these issues behind us,” Scharf said.

Chicago weather forecast includes winter storm that could dump several inches of snow, bring blizzard conditions

CHICAGO (WLS) — A Chicago winter storm this week is forecast to dump several inches of snow on the area on Thursday and Friday ahead of the Christmas holiday, and bring very strong winds and dangerous wind chills.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the entire Chicago area and northwest Indiana.

The alert is in effect from 9 a.m. Thursday until Saturday at 6 a.m. for DeKalb, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, Livingston and McHenry counties. For the rest of the Chicago area, the alert is in effect from noon Thursday until 6 a.m. Saturday, with the alert starting at 3 p.m. for areas in northwest Indiana.

ABC7 Chicago Meteorologist Larry Mowry said the timing of the storm has moved up, and it is now expected to hit earlier in the day on Thursday. That means the western suburbs could start seeing snow by 9 a.m. Thursday, with the city seeing snow by noon and northwest Indiana by 3 p.m.

Models show much lower snow totals than predicted Monday, when models were predicting up to 19 inches of snow in some areas near the lake. Now the models are showing a range of 3 to 8 inches, with many areas seeing less than 6 inches of snow, Mowry said.

What can I do if my flight is canceled, delayed? How to prepare for likely 2022 holiday travel mess

But it will be difficult to measure the exact amount of snowfall because extremely high winds, over 50 miles per hour, will be a major feature of the storm. They will lead to blizzard conditions and the threat of power outages, and extreme travel difficulties from blowing snow reducing visibility, Mowry said.

The possibility of power outages is particularly dangerous because the very high winds will compound extreme cold, producing wind chill temperatures around -20 to -30. After the storm, forecasted highs will struggle to climb out of the single digits, and night time lows are likely to be below zero.

At those temperatures, it is possible to get frostbite in as little as 10 to 20 minutes.

WATCH | Latest 7-day Chicago weather forecast

The forecast for this week has forced many holiday travelers to scramble to change their plans. Most airlines currently have weather waivers in place, which means you can change your flights for free if you have flexible travel plans.

Shopping, shoveling, salting: How people and officials are preparing for the storm

Salt trucks lined up in Elk Grove Village Tuesday like they were preparing for battle; and, in a sense, they were.

“Pretty much everybody can outsource everything else, but you can’t outsource snow removal. This is pretty much what our guys live for and look forward to all year long,” said Colby Basham of Elk Grove Village Public Works.

With plenty of lead time before the storm, they are spending some of it to load the tanks up with the beet juice that combines with salt to clear the roads.

The same could be seen in other suburbs like Oak Forest. Because it’s the first snow event of the season, most towns have a full supply of salt.

“Last year was so mild we have a full salt dome and another house full of salt as well, so we are pretty well stocked to get this season going,” said Vince Kilcullen, with Algonquin General Services.

Gas is another story. The high cost of diesel is much more than what many towns planned on, and likely to push budgets into the red.

Suburban public works directors are closely following the forecast, and took part in a call with the National Weather Service. Federal emergency management officials are urging people to be cautious and reconsider their travel plans.

In the city, folks flocked to hardware stores, supermarkets and the Mag Mile to prepare for the storm.

Many used Tuesday to stock up on provisions at bustling grocery stores, which are likely to get busier as the storm gets closer. And hardware stores like JC Licht Ace Hardware in Bridgeport said rock salt, snow melt and shovels have been selling fast. Snow throwers are especially popular, given the amount of snow expected.

“There’d been a shortage of snow throwers over the last couple years with the supply chain and with COVID, so now the vendors are starting to reload, now we’re back in stock, so we could be having some of the pent up demand from the last couple years, as well,” said Jeremy Melnick, VP of Hardware at JC Licht.

And last-minute shoppers as well as some who placed holiday gift orders online flocked to the stores, unable to wait any longer. Some were getting an earlier start than their usual Christmas Eve shopping plans, while others were no longer confident in their online orders arriving in time, so were out buying backup gifts.

ComEd said it is positioning people and equipment to be able to respond quickly to potential power outages.

“We are positioning our people and equipment to respond quickly and safely to any interruptions that result from this snowstorm,” said Terence Donnelly, president and COO of ComEd. “We realize that any interruption is an inconvenience to our customers, especially during the holidays. Avoiding power outages and restoring service quickly is critical. We have strengthened our system over the years to reduce the impacts a storm like this can have on our customers.”

ComEd customers can text OUT to 26633 (COMED) to report an outage and receive restoration information as well as following ComEd on Twitter or on Facebook. Customers can also call 1-800 EDISON1 (1-800-334-7661), or report outages via the website at ComEd.com/report or use the ComEd app.

ComEd warns people never to approach a downed power line and not to approach ComEd crews to ask them about restoration times as they may be working on live electrical equipment.

City leaders are set to talk at the Office of Emergency Management at 11 a.m. Wednesday to detail how Chicago is preparing for the storm.

What are criteria for a blizzard?

In order for a blizzard warning to be issued, the following conditions need to prevail for three hours or longer:

-The storm needs to have sustained wind or frequent gusts to 35 miles-per-hour or greater

-Falling and/or blowing snow reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile

Stay tuned to ABC7 Eyewitness News and ABC7Chicago.com for the latest forecast and snowfall amounts as the winter storm approaches.

Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update Includes Some Mods, Break Others

Screenshot: The Witcher 3

The good news is that The Witcher 3, already a very good-looking game, is about to get even more good-looking when its next-gen update is released. The bad news is that, for anyone playing the game on PC, loads of your favourite mods from the last seven years aren’t going to work anymore.

As CDPR explain in a blog post, “updating a game means that we change various files, so the mods that modify those exact files stop working”. And when it comes to making those updates, CDPR have prioritised changes that make the base game better, over keeping older things the same for the sake of mods.

Acknowledging that it has been six years since the last major update to the PC version of the game, though, CDPR say that’s “a long time to get used to one’s favourite mods”, and so in an effort to make “this transition to be as smooth as possible” have compiled a list of some of the community’s favourite mods, tested them and shared which ones work with the next-gen update and which ones don’t.

Some of them work! Sadly loads of them, especially the ones reliant on scripting, don’t. As CDPR say, “Because we are changing scripts in the update due to the addition of a new quest, most of the mods that are based on scripts will error out”. For mod creators concerned about this, a team of “modding experts” from CDPR will be around to “provide help and advice to modders on forums post-release when possible.”

Helping to alleviate this somewhat, though, is an accompanying announcement that the next-gen update will be shipping with some fan-made mods baked into it at launch:

Additionally, we are including several popular mods in the update (they’ll be available depending on the platform). We obtained permissions from their creators, reimbursed them, and they’ll be featured in the credits of the updated game. The mods were reworked and assets optimised as needed, and the game adjusted to run with them. There was even a case when a dev got so engrossed in tinkering when including a mod that he ended up simply remaking that particular aspect of the game. So, in a way, the game comes with some mods already included.

That’s neat! Especially the reimbursement part.

Google releases its biggest Pixel feature drop yet, and it includes the Pixel Watch

Today is the first Monday of the month, and that means it’s time for Google to release its monthly software update for the Pixel phones. Only this time it’s special. This, in fact, is the latest Pixel Feature Drop, and not just that, but it’s the biggest one of all time. It even includes some new stuff for the recently launched Pixel Watch!

Let’s get into it then. The December Pixel Feature Drop comes with VPN by Google One at no extra cost for Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro owners. The VPN is “built to help ensure your network traffic can’t be tied to your identity”, including by Google. This service was already available for free for Google One members on Platinum plans (2TB and higher), but now it’s open to Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro owners regarding of their Google One subscription status. The VPN still works through the Google One app, though.

Moving on, security and privacy settings have been unified in the Android Settings, and this new section has action cards up top that notify you of any security risks and give you easy steps to make things better.

Next up, Clear calling on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro enhances the other caller’s voice and reduces their background noise so you can hear them clearly even if they’re in a noisy place.

The Pixel Recorder now identifies and labels each speaker and has line breaks when the speaker changes, so when you record an interview or meeting each person is labeled individually. It’s all done by machine learning, live while you’re recording, and if anything is wrong you can re-label speakers if you want to after you finish.

The Pixel Watch is getting the Fitbit Sleep Profile feature, as long as you’ve activated (and are going to keep) your Fitbit Premium subscription. This is free for six months for new Pixel Watch buyers, but after that you’ll need to shell out a tenner a month to get features such as this one.

Sleep Profile gives you a high-definition picture of your sleep quality at a glance, taking into account aspects such as duration, consistency, disruption, and presents you with an animal that most matches your sleep style. Results will adjust monthly based on your personal metrics. In order for this to work, you need to wear your Pixel Watch to bed for at least 14 days each month, so you get the results on the first day of the following month. Better keep that charger handy, then.

The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are getting cough and snore detection, which you can access through Bedtime mode. There are also new Pixel wallpapers to be had, and new tiles for the Pixel Watch, including a Sunrise/Sunset tile from the Weather app, while the Contacts app now lets you pin up to five contacts from your Favorites so you can call them and see their details with just one tap.

Digital car key lets you lock, unlock, and start a compatible car with your phone, and can be shared with friends and family who need access to said car. This currently works “across Pixel and iPhone”, but will soon be available on “select phones with Android 12+”, Google promises.

Additionally, Gboard gets Grammar Check in French too, Live Translate can translate texts in your messaging apps in Arabic, Persian, Swedish, Vietnamese, and Danish (on Pixel 6 and newer), on-device search got more powerful on the Pixel 4a and later, and Voice Message Transcription has made it to Pixel 4a and newer phones as well.

Google is also teasing that support for spatial audio is coming in January for Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 7, and 7 Pro paired with the Pixel Buds Pro, but also with wired headphones. As usual with Google software updates, it might take days, if not weeks, for the December update to roll out to all supported devices, so don’t fret if you don’t have it just yet.

Tom Osborne’s ‘cordial’ call with Matt Rhule includes chat about Mickey Joseph

Take a look at the playing and coaching career of Matt Rhule.

LINCOLN — Matt Rhule said he crossed an item off his bucket list Saturday morning.

“I talked to Coach Osborne,” Nebraska’s new football coach said on ESPN of a conversation with the legendary Husker coach and athletic director.

Osborne said Saturday that the call was “cordial” and relatively brief. Osborne said he expected the call from Rhule after NU Athletic Director Trev Alberts phoned Saturday to tell Osborne Rhule wanted to chat.

“I told Matt I’d help in any way I could,” Osborne said, “but I’m not going to be an interfering influence.”

Osborne had been instrumental in encouraging Rhule’s predecessor, Scott Frost, to become NU’s head coach in 2017. Osborne also supported Frost’s interim replacement, Mickey Joseph, another former Husker quarterback.

People are also reading…

“I talked to (Rhule) a little bit about Mickey and the job Mickey’s done in the interim,” Osborne said.

Joseph would be a good addition to any staff, Osborne said when asked if Rhule should try to retain Joseph.

“I would think that would be important, obviously,” Osborne said. “I can’t go any further that. “He’s a good recruiter, he relates well to people and he’s a straight shooter. He doesn’t give you any baloney. He tells you pretty much how it is. I like those qualities in him. It would serve anybody well to have him.”

Osborne praised Alberts for a “thoughtful” search process. Osborne didn’t talk to Alberts much about the coaching search over the last several months, but he received occasional updates, including a sense of who the final six or seven candidates turned out to be.

“I just listened because I’ve never met most of these people,” Osborne said. “I’m old enough now that I’m not in touch with the current generation of coaches.”

Due to some “appointments” that are “pretty important,” Osborne said it’s unlikely he’ll attend Monday’s 1:30 p.m. press conference at the Hawks Championship Center to introduce Rhule. If Osborne’s not there, he said, it’s no reflection on what he thinks of the hire.

“I don’t want to be an outside or interfering presence,” Osborne said. “This is between Matt Rhule, the university, Trev Alberts and the rest of the coaching staff. I’m not part of that. I’m not planning on being there.”

Rhule has done good work in turning around two college programs, Temple and Baylor from struggling teams into double-digit winners.

“He certainly took over Baylor under difficult circumstances,” Osborne said of Rhule, who became Baylor’s head coach in the wake of the sexual assault scandal inside the program.
