Kanye West: Adidas to launch investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior made against rapper

CNN Business
 —

Adidas will begin an investigation into allegations of misconduct against Kanye West, with whom the company had a partnership that it ended in October.

In a statement released Thursday, Adidas said “it is currently not clear whether the accusations made in an anonymous letter are true. However, we take these allegations very seriously and have taken the decision to launch an independent investigation of the matter immediately to address the allegations.”

The statement follows an article in Rolling Stone which reported that Adidas board members ignored inappropriate behavior from the rapper, who legally changed his name to Ye, in its partnership with his Yeezy brand.

Rolling Stone says it obtained a letter sent by former high-ranking employees of Yeezy to executive board members on Tuesday about “the toxic and chaotic environment that Kanye West created.” The letter went on to say, “This type of response from a brand partner is one that Adidas employees should never be subjected to, nor should Adidas leadership ever tolerate.”

Adidas ended its partnership with Ye after he made a series of antisemitic remarks in recent months. In late October, West addressed the antisemetic comments — as well as as what he’s said about George Floyd and Black Lives Matter — in a rambling 16-minute video shared by WmgLab Records on YouTube and seemingly recorded at some point after Adidas ended its business relationship with him.

“I think Adidas felt like cause everyone was ganging up on me that they had the right to just take my designs,” West told a small crowd.

In the video, West did not apologize for his antisemitic remarks but seemed to try to distance himself from any “hate group.”

“I have no association to any hate group,” West said as he closed his remarks in prayer. “If any hate happens upon any Jewish person, it is not associated (gestures to himself) because I am demanding that everyone walk in love.”

Adidas had partnered with West since 2013, when the company signed his brand away from rival Nike. In 2016, Adidas expanded its relationship with the rapper, calling it “the most significant partnership ever created between a non-athlete and an athletic brand.”

West doesn’t currently have an attorney or publicist representing him in this matter.

3 Stoughton officers had inappropriate relationships with girl who later died by suicide, chief says – Boston 25 News

STOUGHTON, Mass. — Three Stoughton police officers who have since resigned from their roles with the department engaged in inappropriate relationships with a teenage girl who died by suicide years later, the town’s top cop said Friday.

Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamarra on Friday announced the “deeply troubling” results of an 18-month internal affairs investigation and condemned the “serious misconduct” of former officers Matthew Farwell, his twin brother William Farwell, and Robert Devine.

McNamarra said all of the officers formed relationships with and exploited Sandra Birchmore, a 13-year-old who was enrolled in the Stoughton Police Explorers program in 2010.

Birchmore, 23, was found dead in her apartment in Canton on Feb. 4, 2021, and she was failed by, abused, and manipulated by the officers, according to McNamarra.

“Ms. Birchmore was a vulnerable person who had one constant in her life since childhood with an unwavering appreciation of police officers…People with oaths and duties to protect and serve.” McNamarra said. “The admiration led her to form relationships with men who were willing to take advantage of her.”

Up until her death, Birchmore had been speaking of her relationship with Matthew Farwell. The day after Birchmore’s death, McNamarra ordered Deputy Chief Brian Holmes to head up an investigation to determine if any misconduct was committed by members of her department.

“The subsequent inquiries into her life and death revealed a deeply disturbing pattern of behavior toward her,” McNamarra said.

The Farwell brothers, as well as Devine, violated many department policies, including being untruthful and failing in attention and devotion to duty, according to McNamarra.

Evidence uncovered during the investigation showed Matthew Farwell, who was 27 at the time, met Birchmore while she was in the explorers’ program and began a relationship with her that included a slew of digital messages and explicit exchanges over the course of several years, McNamarra said.

William Farwell is also accused of exchanging explicit messages and photographs with Birchmore while on duty, in addition to having a number of unbecoming physical encounters with her.

McNamarra said William Farwell also attempted to introduce Birchmore to other men on multiple occasions, including former Deputy Chief Devine who had been demoted to patrol officer for abusing power and an “individual who is a police officer in another jurisdiction.”

Devine also worked as a detail officer at an afterschool program years earlier and had inappropriate contact with another student, according to McNamarra. He then began overseeing the explorers program, which taught aspects of policing to youth participants.

The Farwell brothers were both youth participants in the program under Devine before becoming instructors years later, putting them on a course to meet Birchmore, McNamarra said. That program has since been disbanded.

Investigators ultimately determined that Matthew Farwell ended his relationship with Birchmore on Feb. 1, 2021, after a “nasty, nasty argument.” She was found dead days later.

“All three men, the Farwell brothers, and Devine, violated their oaths of office and should never have the privilege of serving any community as a police officer,” McNamarra said. “Through a sustained and deliberate combination of lies, deceit, and treachery, they violated the policies of the Stoughton Police Department.”

The Farwell brothers and Devine have since resigned and Abington’s police chief confirms his department is investigating one of its officers involved in the misconduct with Birchmore after getting information from Stoughton.

McNamarra added that she plans to ask the state’s new Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission to decertify the Farwell brothers and Devine. She also noted that she is “heartbroken” and “incensed” by what has transpired.

The Norfolk District Attorney’s Office was informed of the findings, which were detailed in a 60-page report.

In a statement, the DA’s office said, “State Police detectives and the medical examiner found no evidence of foul play in the death of Ms. Birchmore…The investigation to date has not developed a prosecutable statutory rape case against any individual.”

All three officers have left the department and the Stoughton Chief is going through the process to decertify their police certification. We went to all of the officers homes and nobody was willing to comment on the internal affairs report. Boston 25 went to all of the officer’s homes and nobody was willing to comment on the internal affairs report.

Gary Busey responds to sex offense charges: ‘I was not inappropriate at all’

The affidavit, obtained by CNN, states that Cherry Hill police detectives were called to a Doubletree Hotel on August 13 where two victims “reported being sexually assaulted by the same actor,” identified as the defendant.

“They reported they were in a photoshoot area during the Monster Mania event and were having their picture taken with the defendant. During the photoshoot, the defendant placed his face near one of the victim’s breasts and asked her where she got them, before attempting to unlatch her bra strap,” the affidavit states.

The other woman reported that Busey, 78, grabbed her buttocks during the photo shoot, the affidavit states. The next day, a man reported that his daughter had been sexually assaulted by the actor, and that she told detectives he grabbed her buttocks during a photoshoot, according to the affidavit.

Earlier Tuesday, Busey had no comment when CNN reached out and declined to say whether he had legal representation in the matter.

CNN contacted Busey again Tuesday night for comment on the affidavit’s allegations.

Busey denied allegations of sexual misconduct to TMZ when the outlet caught up with the actor at a Malibu gas station on Monday, TMZ reported.

He said he was “not inappropriate at all,” and that he has eyewitnesses.

“None of that happened,” Busey said. “Nothing happened. Nothing. It was all false.”

Detectives made contact with Busey and the affidavit states he “initially denied groping anyone, before asking detectives to apologize to the victims, then asking detectives to talk the victims out of pursuing complaints, as well as claiming that sometimes it is possible to accidentally touch someone in a specific body part,” the affidavit states.

A law firm representing Monster Mania told CNN in a statement Saturday that it was assisting authorities in their investigation, and that immediately after receiving a complaint from an attendee, “the celebrity guest was removed from the convention and instructed not to return.”

A criminal complaint states Busey is to appear in Camden Superior Court at noon on August 31.

Busey faces charges including two counts of criminal sexual contact (fourth degree), one count of criminal attempt/ criminal sexual contact (fourth degree), and one count of harassment (disorderly persons offense).

CNN has contacted Cherry Hill police and Camden County prosecutors for comment.

Busey is best known for his portrayal of Buddy Holly in the 1978 movie “The Buddy Holly Story,” for which he was nominated for an Oscar for best actor.

Johnny Depp asks judge to strike ‘inappropriate argument’ in Amber Heard closing statement amid deliberation

Johnny Depp has filed a motion to strike part of Amber Heard’s closing argument which asked jurors to consider the “message” that ruling against her would send to other domestic violence victims.

Mr Depp’s lawyers raised concern over the “inappropriate argument” in a filing in Fairfax County District Court on Tuesday as the jury deliberated for a second day in the couple’s defamation case.

They asked Judge Penney Azcarate to strike the argument from the record, instruct the jury to disregard it and to revise the Special Verdict Form. The judge said she would not consider the motion due to the fact that deliberation is already well underway.

In his closing for the defence on 27 May, Ms Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn warned that ruling in favour of Mr Depp would make jurors an “accomplice” to his alleged abuse.

“In trying to convince you that Mr Depp has carried his burden of proof in proving that he was never abusive to Amber on even one occasion, think about the message that Mr Depp and his attorneys are sending to Amber and by extension to every victim of domestic abuse everywhere,” he said.

“If you didn’t take the picture it didn’t happen. If you did take pictures they’re fake.

“If you didn’t tell your friends you’re lying. If you did tell your friends you’re part of the hoax.

“If you didn’t seek medical treatment you weren’t injured. If you did seek medical attention you’re crazy.

“If you did everything that you can to help your spouse, the person that you love, rid himself of the crushing drug and alcohol abuse that spins him into an abusive, rage-filled monster you’re a nag.

“And if you finally decided that enough is enough, you’ve had enough of the fear and enough of the pain and you have to leave to save yourself, you’re a golddigger.”

He warned: “That is the message that Mr Depp is asking you to send.”

Mr Rottenborn urged jurors not to be “an accomplice” to this message and to the Pirates actor’s “global humiliation” campaign against his former wife.

In their motion to strike that argument from the record, Mr Depp’s attorneys said Mr Rottenborn’s statements “improperly invite the jury to focus on a larger social objective beyond the [case]”, citing a 2021 ruling from the 4th Circuit in Plymail v Mirandy.

“Such argument by Ms Heard’s counsel improperly invites the jury to decide the case ‘based on passion and prejudice’ and a specific jury instruction is necessary to cure this impropriety,” the filing states.

Mr Depp is suing his ex-wife Ms Heard for $50m claiming she defamed him in an op-ed for The Washington Post where she described herself as a victim of domestic abuse under the title: “I spoke up against sexual violence – and faced our culture’s wrath. That has to change.”

Ms Heard countersued her former husband for $100m claiming he launched a “smear campaign” against her.

Tuesday’s filing also asked the court to amend a portion of the Special Verdict Form in regards to Mr Depp’s affirmative claims against Ms Heard – that is, the claims jurors are considering in his case against her.

They are seeking to change a question regarding the title of her op-ed which reads “The statement was false” to “The statement about Mr Depp was false?”

Bill Murray reportedly accused of ‘inappropriate behaviour’ on film set | Film

A complaint of “inappropriate behaviour” has been made against the actor Bill Murray, leading to the production shutdown of the film he is working on, it has been reported.

According to Deadline, production on the Searchlight film Being Mortal was halted on Monday and a letter was subsequently sent to cast and crew saying: “We were made aware of a complaint, and we immediately looked into it. After reviewing the circumstances, it has been decided that production cannot continue at this time.”

The letter did not name Murray as the target of the complaint. However, Deadline named Murray and the New York Times followed, referencing an anonymous source saying that the movie was shut down because of what was described only as “inappropriate behaviour”.

Being Mortal is an adaptation of Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, a nonfiction exploration of death and dying by surgeon Atul Gawande, and is written and directed by Aziz Ansari. Ansari also stars in the film alongside Murray and Seth Rogen.

It is not known how long the shoot will be suspended. In their letter Searchlight say: “Our hope is to resume production and are working with Aziz [Ansari] and [producer] Youree [Henley] to figure out that timing.”

Both Searchlight and a representative for Murray have been contacted for a response. Searchlight told Deadline it does not comment on ongoing investigations.
