George R. R. Martin: Game of Thrones Shows ‘Impacted’ by HBO Changes

Even future “Game of Thrones” spinoffs may not be safe from the ongoing changes at HBO Max, according to George R. R. Martin.

In a blog post on Wednesday, the author wrote that some of his planned shows in the “Game of Thrones” universe have been “shelved” at the streamer. After HBO parent company WarnerMedia merged with Discovery in April, HBO Max’s content slate has been growing thinner to cut costs, contributing to the cancellation of shows like “Love Life,” “Minx” and “FBoy Island.”

Though “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” had the biggest season finale HBO has seen since that of the original series and has been renewed for Season 2, Martin wrote that other projects in development aren’t as set in stone.

“Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development,” Martin wrote. “None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

While Martin did not specify which projects have been shelved, there are at least six projects that have been reported to be in development, including prequel series “Tales of Dunk and Egg,” the Princess Nymeria-centered “10,000 Ships” and a Jon Snow spinoff in which Kit Harington is attached to star.

Representatives for HBO Max did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

Martin also took some time in the post to praise the films and shows he’s enjoyed this year, shouting out “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “The Sandman” and Season 2 of “The White Lotus.”

“Brilliant performances by Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson,” he wrote of “The Banshees of Inisherin.” “A powerful story, one I will long remember… but damn, so sad. I see people calling it a comedy. Really? OK, but that’s dark humor.”

HBO Max Tumult Has “Impacted” Future Of ‘Game Of Thrones’ – Deadline

A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has offered yet another update on the status of future Game of Thrones projects, sharing that the franchise’s path ahead will “certainly” be shaped to one degree or another by current tumult at HBO Max.

Martin says that beyond the prequel House of the Dragon, which has been renewed for a second season, “some [spinoffs] are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon.”

He added that a couple spin-off projects “have been shelved,” though he doesn’t consider these projects dead. “You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf,” said Martin. “[Though] all the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

Martin’s most recent comments on the future of GoT came in a post to his blog, Not A Blog, published on Wednesday. His remarks on the situation at HBO Max are in reference to the canceling and/or removal of numerous notable films and television series from the platform in a time marked by economic uncertainty, in the wake of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. (Minx, Gordita Chronicles and Love Life being just a few examples of titles recently impacted by content write-downs.)

It’s not yet clear how dramatic changes to plans for the Game of Thrones franchise will be. But Martin assured fans in yesterday’s message that he is currently at work on House of the Dragon Season 2, as that show’s co-creator and EP. Also still in development is his series Wild Cards at Peacock.

Around 14,000 customers impacted after substations in Tacoma vandalized by burglars

CNN
 —

Around 14,000 customers in Puyallup and Graham, Washington, were impacted Sunday after burglars vandalized three power substations belonging to Tacoma Public Utilities and Puget Sound Energy, police said.

No suspects are in custody at this time, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department added in a statement Sunday.

The sheriff’s department said their agency first received a report of a burglary at the Tacoma Public Utilities substation at 5:26 a.m. PT.

“Deputies arrived on scene and saw there was forced entry into the fenced area,” according to the statement. “Nothing had been taken from the substation, but the suspect vandalized the equipment causing a power outage in the area.”

Pierce County Sheriff Deputies were alerted to a report of a second burglary at another Tacoma Public Utilities substation, which also had forced entry with damage to equipment, the statement said. Similar to the first substation, nothing was taken.

“At 11:25 we were notified by Puget Sound Energy that they too had a power outage this morning at 02:39 am. Deputies are currently on scene at this facility where the fenced area was broken into and the equipment vandalized,” the statement continued.

“At this time deputies are conducting the initial investigation. We do not have any suspects in custody. It is unknown if there are any motives or if this was a coordinated attack on the power systems,” the statement said.

The FBI’s Seattle Division told CNN Sunday it was aware of the reports but declined to confirm or deny its role in any investigation, adding, “We do take threats against our infrastructure seriously and urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement.”

The city of Puyallup is located 10 miles south of Tacoma. Graham is located 16 miles south of Tacoma.
