Indiana Jones 5 Rumors Dispelled by Director James Mangold

Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) is at the center of a dumb Indy controversy.
Image: Lucasfilm

Before the trailer for Indiana Jones 5 was released, the world hardly knew anything about it. They knew who was in the cast and its release date, but until the trailer hit, 99.9% of the world didn’t even know the film’s title. In some deep, dark pockets online, though, certain fans think they know everything, and director James Mangold just fired back.

We now know the fifth Indiana Jones is called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It’s set in the 1960s and begins with a flashback featuring Harrison Ford de-aged, fighting Nazis. As for what specifically the “Dial of Destiny” is or what the movie is actually about, that’s officially still a mystery. Some online sleuths have begun to piece it together—while others have gone on to fabricate wildly inaccurate and, frankly, misogynistic predictions, and those were what Mangold addressed Friday.

What follows is largely non-spoiler but, according to io9 sources, does give away some very broad strokes about the plot of Dial of Destiny. So if you’d prefer to remain completely spoiler-free, go away now.

The prevailing rumor for the past several months, and one that io9 believes to be accurate, is that Dial of Destiny somehow involves time travel. Now, what does that mean? How? Why? Those things we don’t know and really would rather not know until June 30. What we do know is that online trolls have taken that nugget and fabricated an ending for the film that is not correct. But, with the time-travel plot becoming more likely with each and every reveal, some fans continue to perpetuate the lie.

“Well Indiana Jones and the dial of destiny looks amazing @mang0ld, but if Indy dies and is erased from existence with Phoebe Waller Bridge taking over then you won’t hear the end of it sir! I hope that doomcock dude is wrong! Just have Indy and Marion retire!” tweeted user @Jonesy0091. And yes, that’s the theory. Via time travel, Indiana Jones will go back in time and erase himself, making it so Waller-Bridge’s character, Helena, will have canonically completed all of Indy’s adventures. The rumor goes so far as to say the film ends with scenes from the original four films, all of which now have Helena in them. (Fans have even created fake screenshots of the scenes which are beyond hilarious.)

A few weeks ago, another fan tweeted this theory to Mangold as a screenshot who simply replied “Not true,” before going on to a few other points. Friday’s response to the above tweet went further, though. “One more time. No one is ‘taking over’ or replacing Indy or donning his hat nor is he being ‘erased’ thru some contrivance— and he never was, not not in any cut or script — but trolls will troll — that’s how they get their clicks,” Mangold tweeted.

He continued: “And please don’t exhaust me pointing out how once in a while a troll is ‘right.’ Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now & then. All one has to do is look at set photos & interviews & u get enough info to make wild guesses about a movie plot.” This, we can infer, refers to the fact that time travel is in fact part of the plot. But there’s more. “The diff between trolling a-holes & everyone else is they r trying to make $ off your feelings about other films & culture war politics. They push controversial guesses as coming from ‘sources’ to gin up clicks. Let it go.” And with that, the director probably went back to actually making the movie.

First of all, bravo to James Mangold for speaking out and defending his movie, something he doesn’t have to do and most Disney executives probably would’ve advised against. You never feed the trolls. But he, like others who have followed this story, is probably fed up not only at people believing blatant lies, but also their undercurrent of hatred and misogyny. That anyone could get so wound up about the slightest possibility of a woman having the same accomplishments as Indiana Jones is absurd at best and offensive at worst. These are fictional characters. Characters meant to engage and reflect the audience regardless of gender, race, age, height, etc. For decades non-men watched Indy movies and enjoyed them. Men can’t watch a woman in the role for five minutes and be cool with it? (Which, again, does not happen.)

Even if that was the ending—which, for the last time, it is not—if Indy the character chose to erase himself in a movie, that doesn’t erase the movies themselves. You could still watch them and see Indy find the Ark or Holy Grail, regardless of what follows. You’d think a person obsessed enough with Indiana Jones to be reading spoilers about the ending of his new movie months ahead of time could respect the decision of the fictional character they’ve put such an onus on.

io9 reached out to Lucasfilm which did not have a comment on the situation. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opens June 30 and we’ll have much more in the coming months.

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson pay tribute to Harry Potter’s Robbie Coltrane

Robbie Coltrane died this week, ending a career that spanned decades of both comedy and drama—but which, for many, will always be synonymous with the Harry Potter film franchise, where Coltrane spent roughly a decade playing half-giant Hogwarts groundskeeper Hagrid. Now, several of Coltrane’s co-stars from the films have issued statements this weekend, remembering a man who always went out of his way to keep the young actors he worked with laughing and feeling comfortable on the films’ sets.

That includes series star Daniel Radcliffe, who gave The New York Post a statement about Coltrane, saying that, “Robbie was one of the funniest people I’ve met and used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I’ve especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner Of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid’s hut, and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he’s passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Radcliffe’s co-star Emma Watson issued a tribute of her own, with EW noting that she posted an Instagram Story in which she wrote that, “Robbie was like the most fun uncle I’ve ever had, but most of all, he was deeply caring and compassionate towards me as a child and an adult. His talent was so immense that it made sense he played a gianthe could fill ANY space with his brilliance. Robbie, if I ever get to be so kind as you were to me on a film set I promise I’ll do it in your name and memory. Know how much I adore and admire you. I’ll really miss your sweetness, your nicknames, your warmth, your laughs, and your hugs. You made us a family. Know you were that to us.”

Other Harry Potter kids sharing their memories included brothers Oliver and James Phelps, who played Fred and George Weasley: James Phelps wrote on Twitter about how “I’ll never forget in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane came over to a very nervous 14yr old me on my 1st ever day on a movie set and said ‘Enjoy it, you’ll be great’. Thank you for that.” There’s also Matthew Lewis, who played Neville Longbottom, and who reminisced about “Robbie. Bobser. He called me Space Boy. We shared a love of the final frontier. He didn’t give a fuck and it always made you smile. A giant, in more ways than one. We had some times.”

Harry Potter Reunion – Robbie Coltrane: “I’ll Not be here… but Hagrid will”

Amidst the other tributes this week, fans have also been passing around a moment from the recent Harry Potter reunion special, where Coltrane himself reflected on the films’ legacy. “My children will show them to their children, so you could be watching in 50 years times—easy,” he said, alternating between sincerity and laughter in his typical style.I’ll not be here, sadly. But Hagrid will.”

James Cameron Was Worried Avatar 2 Might Have Taken Too Long

That long awaited Avatar sequel is almost here.
Image: Fox

After a film grosses almost $3 billion at the global box office, you have to imagine the studio behind it would want to cash in immediately. Get a sequel into theaters ASAP. Strike while the iron is hot. Avatar director James Cameron is not that kind of person though. He doesn’t rush things. And yet, even he admits that the 13 years it will have taken between 2009’s mega hit and its December sequel Avatar: The Way of Water did worry him just a little bit.

“I was a little concerned that I had stretched the tether too far, in our fast-paced, modern world, with Avatar 2 coming in 12 years later,” Cameron told the New York Times. “Right until we dropped the teaser trailer, and we got 148 million views in 24 hours. There’s that scarce seen but wondered at principle, which is, ‘Wow, we haven’t seen that in a long time, but I remember how cool it was back then.’” Cameron continued. “Does that play in our favor? I don’t know. I guess we’re going to find out.”

Cameron is no stranger to sequels with long waits in between. In the same interview, he points out he made Aliens seven years after the first film, and it’s considered one of the greatest sequels ever. He also made Terminator 2: Judgment Day seven years after the original and not only is it too is considered one of the greatest sequels ever, it exponential outgrossed the original. So even if he was worried about Avatar 2 for a bit, he did have some proof that waiting and getting it right could work. “I think I could have made a [Avatar] sequel two years later and have it bomb because people didn’t relate to the characters or the direction of the film,” he said.

But Cameron hasn’t made an out and out “bomb” in 40 years. His track record is basically unmatched. So we have to imagine, working on this movie for over a decade, his care and confidence are through the roof. One thing he couldn’t work on in that time, though, is Avatar’s cultural impact, which isn’t close to the other mega blockbusters of its time. Almost $3 billion grossed and yet, very few toys on the shelves, quotes in the lexicon, and only a smattering of extremely brave cosplayers. It’s going to be beyond interesting to see not just if the film is a hit, but how big of a hit—and if the wait will bring in a new generation of fans. Then there’s the follow-up, though the wait for all the subsequent Avatar sequels will be minuscule in comparison to this one. Avatar 3 is scheduled for release December 2024, with parts 4 and 5 coming two years after the previous. Could that be too short of a wait? Who knows? Well, maybe James Cameron.

For an Avatar refresher, the original film is coming back to theaters this weekend. Avatar: The Way of Water opens December 16.

D23 Expo reimainging, sequel, Pixar, and more news roundup

All the Disney princesses
Photo: Olga Thompson (Walt Disney World Resort via Getty Images)

Now that another Disney+ Day has come and gone, we can get on to the meat of Disney’s big weekend: The D23 Expo, where the greatest fans in the world can get a look at the stuff they’ve already seen before but now reimagined.

Kicking off the day was Cynthia Orivio, our new Blue Fairy, who reminded the audience that there was a new version of Pinnochio currently being memory-holed on Disney+. Continuing the theme that these sorts of things were now the order of the day, Disney Studios chairman Alan Bergman took the stage to remind us that these reimaginings, such as The Lion King, Beauty And The Beast, Cinderella, and Cruella, were “iconic.” We assume he meant that the movies use “iconic imagery,” but regardless, more of these iconic reimaginings and sequels are coming down the pike.

Bergman then brought Walt Disney Studios president Sean Bailey out to take us through the upcoming ways they’re reviving old brands.

Don’t worry: Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted are still coming

First up were the sequels. Hocus Pocus 2 debuts later this month, and since we already shared the trailer, we’ll move on to the other big sequel announcement: Disenchanted. Don’t get it twisted with Matt Groening’s Netflix comedy Disenchantment. This is a sequel to the wonderful Amy Adams comedy Enchanted from 2007. The whole cast is back, including Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Adele Dazeem Idina Menzel, and James Marsden. They’ve upped the ante by adding a Maya Rudolph, too. And now, there’s a trailer.

Disenchanted lands on Disney+ on November 24, 2022.

Disenchanted | Official Trailer | Disney+

Reimagining the past is Disney’s future

The presentation was done round-robin style, with Bailey shuffling VIPs on stage for about five minutes, playing a clip, and then shuffling them off. So next up, Jude Law and the cast of Peter Pan & Wendy took the stage.

Directed by David Lowery, who directed one of the best films of 2021, The Green Knight, and Disney’s delightful remake of Pete’s Dragon, Peter Pan seems a bit more stylish than the other movies announced today. It’s still filled with nostalgic images pulled straight from the Disney vault, but also a distinct visual style, location shooting, and a fish-eye lens that won’t quit. So how will this differ from literally every other revisionist Peter Pans from the last 20 years? Those got theatrical releases.

Our new Captain Hook, Jude Law, said that this version gets into the “backstory a little more” when Peter and Hook “were once friends.” But, again, it remains to be seen how this one will differentiate itself from the numerous other Peter Pans.

Perhaps the trickiest aspect of the movie is Tiger Lily, a character that hasn’t been treated with much respect by Disney in the past. Nevertheless, newcomer Alyssa Wapanatâhk said she was very “excited to have the honor” of playing Tiger Lily. “To be able to tell the story for her, that was phenomenal for me.”

Peter Pan & Wendy [sigh] hits Disney+ next year.

After pushing Peter Pan back to Neverland, Sean Bailey introduced the trailer of The Haunted Mansion and announced that Winona Rider was joining the cast. Director (and former Disneyland employee) Justin Simin also mentioned that “according to TikTok,” Jared Leto is playing the Hatbox Ghost. We await the horror stories from his fellow castmates about how hard he tried to fit into a hatbox for the role. But really, this one is for the real Hatbox heads.

“That script was funny and filled with interesting characters, but it had a little bit of like a dark edge to it,” Simin told the crowd at D23. “I just really related to it. I felt like I knew how to make it. I felt like I understood New Orleans. And, of course, I’m a fanboy. So I felt like I understood the ride, and I felt like I got a responsibility here to make sure all the little details, all the Easter eggs are there because I’m a nerd for real.”

Bailey brought out Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins for a sneak peek of Mufasa: The Lion King. Jon Favreau’s The Lion King made over a billion dollars, so that means people liked it. However, the “live action” animation in Mufasa probably won’t convert anyone turned off by the last trip to Pride Lands. Still, then again, Barry Jenkins is very good at making movies. Here’s what Barry Jenkins said about the film:

Mufasa is the origin story of one of the greatest beings in the history of the alliance. Mufasa, all caps. It’s a story told in a few different time frames. Rafiki, Timon, and Pumbaa, who we all know and love, are relating the story of Mufasa and how he came to a very beautiful, awesome, fantastic young cub. It’s a story about how Mufasa rose to royalty. We assume he was just born into his lineage. But Mufasa was actually an orphaned cub, who had to navigate the world alone. And in telling this story, we get to experience the real journey of how Mufasa found his place and the circle of life. It is pretty awesome.

I felt I had to make this movie because when I was 14, I was helping raise two nephews. And there was a VHS tape that we watched maybe 95 times in the span of 20 days. So I really knew this character. I loved him. But then as I was reading this wonderful script, I was thinking about Mufasa and why he’s great and how people become great. And it’s crazy. I am not a king, but when I make my movies, I was on stage at the Oscars with Moonlight, and I was there and five of my best friends from college were also there. And what you are learning the story is that Mufasa is who he is. He is great because of the family and the friends he has with them. And so I saw myself in that. I thought, this is a really beautiful story to tell.

For Marc Webb’s Snow White, Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler took the stage to show some footage. There are no dwarves yet—and seeing as they were cut from the title, who knows what their role will be. Thus far, it looks similar to the other remakes, recreating the look of the animated classic. But we’ll need to see Dopey to know how scary this thing is going to look.

Similarly, Rob Marshall invited Halley Bailey on stage to show off The Little Mermaid teaser and a clip of “Part Of Your World.” It doesn’t look like all the effects are done yet, but right now, it’s reminiscent of Avatar and the “merman” commercial from Zoolander. On the other hand, Marshall did promise four new songs from Alan Menkin and Lin Manuel Miranda, so that’s something.

Pixar on Disney+

The director of The Good Dinosaur, Peter Sohn, is back, and he brought some clips and concept art for the next Pixar movie Elemental. Sohn described the film as “very personal” and that the germ of the idea came from his parents. “We immigrated to the U.S. from Korea in the early seventies,” Sohn said. “They had no money, no family, no English. But they managed to create a life in New York.”

Similarly, Elemental files a “fire family” assimilating in Element City, “where Earth, air, water, and fire are characters in our community.

More Pixar is coming in 2023 as we got a little more information on Win Or Lose, the studio’s first television series. The show stars Will Forte as the coach of a ragtag little league baseball team, the Pickles, and the week leading up to their big game. Each episode will focus on a different character’s perspective, allowing for various animation styles.

Pixar also announced two new features Elio and Inside Out 2, which we wrote about here.

Wait! Disney also has some cartoons to share

Disney Animation Studios will not be outdone. Today, they showed clips of their upcoming series Zootopia+ and Iwájú.

Zootopia+ is a six-part series that, like Win Or Lose, focuses on a different character and genre in each episode with various animation styles—some of which look really cool and others like Pixar.

On the other hand, Iwájú is a downright historic collaboration between Disney and an outside animation studio. Jennifer Lee, the Chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, retold the story of how she had read about a Nigerian animation studio that was going to take down Disney. So she did like many Disney execs before her and bought the competition.

With the team from Kugali, Disney will premiere the futuristic sci-fi series Iwájú next year.

Finally, Lee brought out the cast from their upcoming 61st animated feature, Strange World. Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, and Lucy Liu star in an outer space adventure about a dysfunctional group of explorers. This one comes out on November 23.

Strange World | Teaser Trailer | Walt Disney Animation Studios

“Our film is inspired by some of the great adventure stories that we grew up with,” said co-director Don Hall. “Specifically stories about a group of explorers that stumble upon a hidden world.”

What are we most excited to discover? Jaboukie Young-White’s character, Ethan Clave, which Young-White described as “the vibe master” who makes “the vibe great.”

And that’s everything from the D23 Expo Disney Animation Studios and Pixar presentation. Check back tomorrow when Disney tries to bury us under a mountain of Star Wars and Marvel announcements.

Fast X Director Justin Lin Has Stepped Down

Photo: Frazer Harrison (Getty Images)

Justin Lin is arguably the most important director in Fast and Furious history. The series may have started under the watchful eye of Rob Cohen, but Lin directed the best and worst of the saga. His return to directing in F9 was heralded as a high point for the series, but it seems that comeback will be short-lived: After just days of shooting, Justin Lin has stepped down as director of Fast X.

As initially reported by Deadline, Lin has given up the director’s chair but will remain attached to the project as a producer. As Deadline reports, “insiders say that Lin ultimately decided to step away from the franchise due to creative differences.” Lin’s statement doesn’t give any definitive reason for his departure:

With the support of Universal, I have made the difficult decision to step back as director of FAST X, while remaining with the project as a producer. Over 10 years and five films, we have been able to shoot the best actors, the best stunts, and the best damn car chases. On a personal note, as the child of Asian immigrants, I am proud of helping to build the most diverse franchise in movie history. I will forever be grateful to the amazing cast, crew and studio for their support, and for welcoming me into the FAST family.

While second unit shooting will reportedly continue, most of production is reportedly on hold until a new director can be found, leaving many to wonder who will fill Lin’s shoes. Names like Christopher Nolan, Michael Bay, and Edgar Wright have all been proposed on Twitter, but I personally won’t be satisfied until the reins are given to the directors best suited for the Fast family: the Wachowskis. Just imagine: a Fast movie with the visuals of Speed Racer, and the heartfelt character moments of Speed Racer. Perfection.

New Doctor Strange 2 trailer reveals another WandaVision link

After breaking open the multiverse in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) appears to be finding out that totally warping reality has its consequences. In this new promotional video for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, the master of the mystic arts is in way over his head–but does he even remember why?

Doctor Strange hasn’t had a solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his titular debut in 2016, but the character has popped up in a slew of other projects since then, hinting at the further development of his mind-bending powers. Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong), friend-turned-foe Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and former co-worker/ex-girlfriend Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) all make their returns for the sequel.

Directed by Sam Raimi, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness is set to be the first feature film to seriously engage with plot points from the MCU’s Disney+ shows, after Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home kept the references to a minimum. In previously unseen footage, Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, reunites with the twin sons she conjured during the events of WandaVision, though it doesn’t seem to last long–at least for now.

While the MCU’s most famous magic users are teaming up, they’ll have to worry about the zombie versions of themselves, depicted in animated form in an episode of What If…? and seen making their live-action debut here. Another sinister variant of Strange is revealed to be sprouting a literal third eye.

Another video featuring the cast announcing ticket sales offers a better look at new character America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez, The Baby-Sitters Club), whose super-powered punches allow her to jump through different timelines. The movie’s roster of heroes is also set to include a mysterious glowing person and Patrick Stewart as Professor X, probably?

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness will be released in theaters on May 6.

Ben Affleck Calls Justice League the “Nadir” of His Career

Image: Warner Bros.

The development of 2017 (and later 2021’s) Justice League is one of the most well-documented messes of a film in recent history, and its stars are still feeling its impact years later. Ray Fisher’s spoken about his time working on the film the most, but this weekend, it’s Ben Affleck in the spotlight for his words on the troubled film.

Affleck, speaking to the LA Times, was asked about his short-lived rocky time as Batman that began with 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. At the time, the 49-year-old actor was reported to also be headlining, writing, and directing a solo Batman movie that would eventually become The Batman. But it was his alcohol addiction and the realization of where his life was going that made him drop out to seek treatment. “I looked at it [Batman] and thought, ‘I’m not gonna be happy doing this. The person who does this should love it,’” Affleck recalled. “I probably would have loved doing it at 32 or something. But it was the point where I started to realize it’s not worth it.”

Speaking rather candidly, the actor continued to talk about how Justice League in particular was what he considered “the nadir” of his career. With everything going on at the time — his divorce, the “competing agendas” at Warner Bros., and the death of director Zack Snyder’s daughter Autumn — working on the film was just torture. Describing it as “everything that I didn’t like about this,” he knew that was the moment where he had to leave Batman entirely, but also added that at that point in his life, anything could’ve set him off. “It’s not even about, like, Justice League was so bad. Because it could have been anything.” Bleak as it sounds for Affleck, there is somewhat of a happy ending here: he’s returning to the character for November’s Flash movie, and it sounds like he had some fun with his iteration of the character before putting him to rest.

Now that Batman’s behind him, Affleck’s reorienting himself towards pursuing projects he genuinely wants to do, like last year’s The Last Duel. While the film underperformed financially, his performance as Count Pierre d’Alençon was something he enjoyed doing, and many viewers enjoyed watching. “I really loved the movie!…I was disappointed more people didn’t see it, but I can’t chase what’s going to be cool.” That realization of needing to stick to his guns is what he thinks will be better for every actor going forward, and the industry in general. “I’m not preoccupied with notions of success or failure about money or commercial success, because those things really corrupt your choices. Then what happens is the movies are less interesting and you’re less good.”

Harry Potter reunion: 5 key takeaways

Daniel Radcliffe and Helena Bonham Carter in the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts
Photo: Nick Wall/HBO Max

1. The crushes of yesteryear

The most significant new information divulged in the special involves cast crushes. Watson reveals she had a massive crush on the actor who played her character’s primary antagonist, Draco Malfoy, feelings that developed after she saw Tom Felton draw a girl with a backward baseball cap on a skateboard as his vision of God. Not that anything happened between them (Watson’s direct quote: “Nothing ever, ever, ever, ever, ever happened,”) as Felton was almost four years older than her, which, in teen years, is practically a lifetime. But their declaration of how deep the bond still runs is a highlight.

Another utterly adorable moment has Helena Bonham Carter bring the note Radcliffe wrote her at the end of the final film. She has him read aloud, on camera, how he, at 18, wished he was a decade older so he could have been “in like a shot” with her. Aww.

Afterlife Toy With Huge Spoiler, Hilarious Text

Proton power!
Image: Sony Pictures

Ghostbusters: Afterlife finally premiered last Friday, raking in more than $44 million over its first weekend—far more than critics and its studio, Sony, had predicted. That doesn’t mean the movie’s better than critics are saying, of course, but that’s not why I’ve brought you here today. We need to talk about a certain set of toys… and most especially, their packaging.

This action figure two-pack contains a big spoiler for the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, so be warned. If you’re worried about being spoiled, however, these toys are already in stores, so either stay out of Target or see the movie ASAP.

If you’re not, let’s continue. Behold:

Image: Hasbro/Sony Pictures

The Family That Busts Together!

If you haven’t watched the movie and just didn’t care about being spoiled, the figure of Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) is indeed packaged next to the ghost of her grandfather Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis, recreated in CG) who arrives at the end of the film to give his undeceased fellow Ghostbusters a hand defeating… you can probably guess who. This raises all sorts of disturbing questions about the eschatology of the Ghostbusters universe, but the infinitely more disturbing idea is the suggestion that the Spengler family busts together, because the verb “bust” has many meanings and the first one on the Urban Dictionary is exceedingly inappropriate for a father-grandaughter duo.

Clearly, toymaker Hasbro means “the family that ghostbusts together,” but you don’t need to have your mind wedged firmly in the gutter to be taken aback after reading the line. Certainly, someone in the massive line of people who were needed to get this box of toys on store shelves would have mentioned, “Uh, you do know bust also means ‘to orgasm’, right?” There are the people who wrote the copy for the packaging, the designers who had to incorporate the text onto the packaging, the marketing people who had to look at both the copy and the final packaging design, and then whatever execs needed to approve the thing. It’s a lot of people, and you’re telling me no one thought, “This might be misinterpreted badly, given that half the porn on the internet seems to be about incest scenarios nowadays and also Ghostbusters has already canonically specified that bustin’ makes people feel good.” Apparently not.
