Putin deploys new Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles to Atlantic

  • Putin sends hypersonic missiles to Atlantic
  • Sends of frigate with Zircon missiles
  • Putin says no other power has such weapons
  • Russia has used hypersonic missiles in Ukraine

MOSCOW, Jan 4 (Reuters) – President Vladimir Putin sent a frigate to the Atlantic Ocean armed with new generation hypersonic cruise missiles on Wednesday, a signal to the West that Russia will not back down over the war in Ukraine.

Russia, China and the United States are in a race to develop hypersonic weapons which are seen as a way to gain an edge over any adversary because of their speeds – above five times the speed of sound – and manoeuvrability.

In a video conference with Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Igor Krokhmal, commander of the frigate named “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov”, Putin said the ship was armed with Zircon (Tsirkon) hypersonic weapons.

“This time the ship is equipped with the latest hypersonic missile system – ‘Zircon’,” said Putin. “I am sure that such powerful weapons will reliably protect Russia from potential external threats.”

The weapons, Putin said, had “no analogues in any country in the world”.

More than 10 months since Putin sent troops into Ukraine, there is no end in sight to the war which has descended into a grinding winter artillery battle that has killed and wounded tens of thousands of soldiers on both sides.

Russia has also used hypersonic Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles in Ukraine.

Along with the Avangard hypersonic glide vehicle which entered combat duty in 2019, the Zircon forms the centrepiece of Russia’s hypersonic arsenal.

Russia sees the weapons as a way to pierce increasingly sophisticated U.S. missile defences which Putin has warned could one day shoot down Russian nuclear missiles.

ATLANTIC VOYAGE

Shoigu said the Gorshkov would sail to the Atlantic and Indian oceans and to the Mediterranean Sea.

“This ship, armed with ‘Zircons’, is capable of delivering pinpoint and powerful strikes against the enemy at sea and on land,” Shoigu said.

Shoigu said the hypersonic missiles could overcome any missile defence system. The missiles fly at nine times the speed of sound and have a range of over 1,000 km, Shoigu said.

The main tasks of the voyage were to counter threats to Russia and to maintain “regional peace and stability jointly with friendly countries”, Shoigu said.

A U.S. Congressional Research Service report on hypersonic weapons says that Russian and Chinese hypersonic missiles are designed to be used with nuclear warheads.

The target of a hypersonic weapon is much more difficult to calculate than for intercontinental ballistic missiles because of their manoeuvrability.

Beyond Russia, the United States and China, a range of other countries are developing hypersonic weapons including Australia, France, Germany, South Korea, North Korea and Japan, according to the U.S. Congressional Research Service.

US military conducts test launch of hypersonic experiments for weapons development

CNN
 —

The US military conducted a successful test launch of a rocket with experiments for hypersonic weapons development at the Wallops Flight Test Facility in Virginia Wednesday.

The rocket carried 11 different experiments designed to test and collect data for hypersonic weapons research to support the joint Army-Navy program, the Navy said.

This was the second test carried out under the program focused on developing both sea and land-based hypersonic capabilities. The first test was conducted in October 2021.

In this test, a sounding rocket was fired from the launchpad, carrying out different experiments to gather data and collect information on components of hypersonic missiles, including heat-resistant materials and high-end electronics.

“The launch today went extremely well,” said Vice Admiral Johnny Wolfe, the director of Strategic Systems Programs who oversaw the test. “As a matter of fact, we’ve just gotten done looking through our key observables, and every piece of data that we wanted to collect – at least preliminarily – has shown that we collected all that data.”

A second rocket is scheduled for launch on Thursday and will carry out an additional 13 experiments designed to inform hypersonic weapons development, the Navy said.

The data collected from these tests will help in the development of the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic system and the Army’s Long Range Hypersonic Weapon. The two programs will both use the Common Hypersonic Glide Body, a projectile carried atop a booster rocket that coasts towards its target at speeds greater than Mach 5.

Hypersonic weapons travel at speeds greater than Mach 5, or approximately 4,000 miles per hour, making them difficult to detect and intercept in time. The missiles can also maneuver and vary altitude, allowing them to evade missile defense systems.

The Pentagon has made the development of hypersonic weapons one of its top priorities after China conducted successful hypersonic launches last year and Russia has begun to use hypersonic missiles in its war in Ukraine.

After China tested a hypersonic weapon in 2021, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley called the test “a very significant technological event” that is just one element of China’s military capabilities.

“The Chinese military capabilities are much greater than that” single test, Milley said in October 2021. “They’re expanding rapidly in space, in cyber and then in the traditional domains of land, sea and air.”

Russia and China are ahead of US in hypersonic missile technology. Here’s why

Top Russian hypersonic missile scientist arrested on treason charge

Dr Alexander Shiplyuk, director of the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Siberian Branch, is the third Russian scientist this summer to be arrested on suspicion of treason.

The institute’s scientific director Vasily Fomin told the Russian news agency TASS that Shiplyuk was sent to the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center in Moscow.

His detention comes after the arrest on June 27 of the chief researcher of the institute, Anatoly Maslov, who is suspected of transferring state secret data related to hypersonic missiles.

According to the institute’s website, Shiplyuk heads a technology lab with unique wind tunnels purpose-built for simulating hypersonic conditions.

On June 30, the Sovetsky District Court of Novosibirsk arrested another scientist, Dmitry Kolker, a researcher at the Institute of Laser Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Kolker was detained on state treason charges for allegedly collaborating with China’s security services, Reuters reported.

Kolker, who was diagnosed with stage four cancer, died while being transferred from the pre-trial detention center.

Military powers in Russia, China, and the United States are working to develop hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) weapons.

These are highly maneuverable weapons that can theoretically fly at hypersonic speeds while adjusting course and altitude to fly under radar detection and around missile defenses.

Experts say such weapons are incredibly hard to defend against.

Russia is thought to have an HGV in its arsenal, the Avangard system, which Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018 claimed was “practically invulnerable” to Western air defenses.

Vladimir Putin targets US in new Russian navy doctrine, warns of using hypersonic weapons

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new naval doctrine that targets the U.S. as Russia’s top global adversary.

Putin signed the 55-page during an appearance in St. Petersburg to mark Russia’s Navy Day. The Russian leader delivered a speech announcing Russia’s plans to become a great maritime power, saying resisting the U.S. is a top goal.

“The strategic policy of the USA to dominate the world’s oceans” threatens Russia, Putin said.

Putin’s speech made no mention of his ongoing invasion of Ukraine, however.

RUSSIA CLAIMS IT USED HYPERSONIC MISSILE TO STRIKE UKRAINE MUNITIONS WAREHOUSE

Putin went on to claim that a number of warships will soon be equipped with hypersonic weapons.

“The key thing here is the capability of the Russian navy,” Putin said. “It is able to respond with lightning speed to all who decides to infringe on our sovereignty and freedom.”

Putin also noted the expansion of NATO as a top threat to Russia, months after Sweden and Finland officially joined the Western alliance. Finland shares an 800-mile border with Russia, significantly expanding potential friction points between NATO and Russia.
