Hasbro said it would cut 1,000 jobs and announced the departure of its chief operating officer as the US toymaker revealed preliminary results for the fourth-quarter that were worse than previously forecast.
The job cuts, representing about 15 per cent of its global workforce, “are necessary to return our business to a competitive, industry-leading position”, chief executive Chris Cocks said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.
Hasbro said they would help keep the company on track to achieve its goal, as part of a plan announced last October, of $250mn to $300mn in annual cost savings by the end of 2025.
The company, which makes Monopoly board games and Transformers toys, said chief operating officer Eric Nyman would depart as a result of the organisational and commercial changes. The company said in its most recent annual report it employed 6,640 people worldwide.
In preliminary results released on Thursday, Hasbro said revenue in 2022 was about $5.86bn, down 9 per cent from a year ago, or a 6 per cent drop in constant currency terms. That was worse than its October forecast, when it cut its full-year outlook, and analysts’ expectations for more than $6.1bn.
The company also had a weak holiday season, which is typically a crucial sales time for toymakers and retailers. Hasbro’s revenue in the three months ended December 26 of $1.68bn, was down 17 per cent from a year earlier and below Wall Street’s median forecast for $1.92bn.
Hasbro shares fell more than 7 per cent in after-hours trading in New York on Thursday. At the end of the regular session, its shares were up 4.5 per cent since the start of 2023, but have shed about 29 per cent over the past 12 months.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Next-Gen Update – Cross-Saves And Cross-Progression Explained
From December 14, any player that owns The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be treated with a free, next-generation update. This update gives players access to improved graphics as well new quests, cosmetics, and more, all for free if you already own the game. Those who do not own the game will be able to buy The Witcher 3: Complete Edition, which includes the next-gen update as well as both of the game’s narrative expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. In addition to all of that content, developer CD Projekt RED has also implemented a new online feature in The Witcher 3. This feature gives players access to cross-progression and cross-saves. Essentially, this means that players will be able to access their Witcher 3 saves on different platforms from the one they initially played on. Below, you can see exactly how to take advantage of the new cross-save system in The Witcher 3.
Cross-saves in The Witcher 3
CD Projekt RED has essentially ported over the cross-save system from Cyberpunk 2077 to The Witcher 3. Players can store their save in the cloud, which can then be accessed on different platforms. The caveat is that players can only have one cross-save active on any platform, so you couldn’t transport different saves with plans to save-scrub across platforms. Of course, this new feature also only applies to the current-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and PC, as those are the platforms that are receiving the next-gen update.

In order to use the cross-save functionality in The Witcher 3, you will need to simply enable the “cross-progression” option within the settings of the game. To do this, pause The Witcher 3 and then open the “save” or “load” menu. From here, you will be able to enable cross-progression, which will then require you to log into your GoG account, which is CDPR’s digital video game marketplace.
If you don’t have a GoG account, you can make one using a valid email. Once you’ve either signed in or made a GoG account, you can return to The Witcher 3. Now, all of your saves will be uploaded to the cloud. To access your saves on a different platform, repeat the same steps as before to enable cross-progression.
After that’s done, you can then see all of your cloud saves through the “Load Game” menu, which can be accessed in-game or at the opening screen for The Witcher 3. Simply pick which save you want to load, and you will then be taken to whatever point that save was on. The only difference now is you will be on a different platform.
Cross-progression between platforms
While you will be able to access different saves across most platforms, there is a caveat you will need to be aware of when playing The Witcher 3’s next-gen update.
To break it down, you can access your cross-progression saves regardless of what platform you’re on. Xbox Series X|S save files can be transferred to PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch, and vice versa, for example. Similarly, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X|S save files can be transferred to PC and PC save files can be transferred between different PCs and PC accounts (Steam to GoG), as well as to consoles. However, you will need to ensure you’re moving saved data across similar versions of the game, accounting for the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is, in this regard, a different game than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. If you’re trying to cross-save from, for example the PC version of the base game and the PS5 version of the Complete Edition, it won’t work, so make sure each platform you want to be involved is using the same version of the game.
The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 goes live on Wednesday, Dec. 14 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

Exclusive: Goldman Sachs on hunt for bargain crypto firms after FTX fiasco
LONDON, Dec 6 (Reuters) – Goldman Sachs (GS.N) plans to spend tens of millions of dollars to buy or invest in crypto companies after the collapse of the FTX exchange hit valuations and dampened investor interest.
FTX’s implosion has heightened the need for more trustworthy, regulated cryptocurrency players, and big banks see an opportunity to pick up business, Mathew McDermott, Goldman’s head of digital assets, told Reuters.
Goldman is doing due diligence on a number of different crypto firms, he added, without giving details.
“We do see some really interesting opportunities, priced much more sensibly,” McDermott said in an interview last month.
FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States on Nov. 11 after its dramatic collapse, sparking fears of contagion and amplifying calls for more crypto regulation.
“It’s definitely set the market back in terms of sentiment, there’s absolutely no doubt of that,” McDermott said. “FTX was a poster child in many parts of the ecosystem. But to reiterate, the underlying technology continues to perform.”
While the amount Goldman may potentially invest is not large for the Wall Street giant, which earned $21.6 billion last year, its willingness to keep investing amid the sector shakeout shows it senses a long term opportunity.
Its CEO David Solomon told CNBC on Nov. 10, as the FTX drama was unfolding, that while he views cryptocurrencies as “highly speculative”, he sees much potential in the underlying technology as its infrastructure becomes more formalized.
Rivals are more sceptical.
“I don’t think it’s a fad or going away, but I can’t put an intrinsic value on it,” Morgan Stanley (MS.N) CEO James Gorman said at the Reuters NEXT conference on Dec. 1.
HSBC (HSBA.L) CEO Noel Quinn, meanwhile, told a banking conference in London last week he has no plans to expand into crypto trading or investing for retail customers.
Goldman has invested in 11 digital asset companies that provide services such as compliance, cryptocurrency data and blockchain management.
McDermott, who competes in triathlons in his spare time, joined Goldman in 2005 and rose to run its digital assets business after serving as head of cross asset financing.
His team has grown to more than 70 people, including a seven-strong crypto options and derivatives trading desk.
Goldman Sachs has also together with MSCI and Coin Metrics launched data service datonomy, aimed at classifying digital assets based on how they are used.
The firm is also building its own private distributed ledger technology, McDermott said.
‘TRUSTED’ PLAYERS
The global cryptocurrency market peaked at $2.9 trillion in late 2021, according to data site CoinMarketCap, but has shed about $2 trillion this year as central banks tightened credit and a string of high-profile corporate failures hit. It last stood at $865 billion on Dec. 5.
The ripple effects from FTX’s collapse have boosted Goldman’s trading volumes, McDermott said, as investors sought to trade with regulated and well capitalized counterparties.
“What’s increased is the number of financial institutions wanting to trade with us,” he said. “I suspect a number of them traded with FTX, but I can’t say that with cast iron certainty.”
Goldman also sees recruitment opportunities as crypto and tech companies shed staff, McDermott said, although the bank is happy with the size of its team for now.
Others also see the crypto meltdown as a chance to build their businesses.
Britannia Financial Group is building its cryptocurrency-related services, its chief executive Mark Bruce told Reuters.
The London-based company aims to serve customers who are eager to diversify into digital currencies, but who have never done so before, Bruce said. It will also cater to investors who are very familiar with the assets, but have become nervous about storing funds at crypto exchanges since FTX’s collapse.
Britannia is applying for more licenses to provide crypto services, such as doing deals for wealthy individuals, he said
“We have seen more client interest since the demise of FTX,” he said. “Customers have lost trust in some of the younger businesses in the sector that purely do crypto, and are looking for more trusted counterparties.”

NASA’s Mars Perseverance rover digs up clues in the hunt for life
Scientists collaborating on the mission also say the rock samples, which the rover has cached in tubes for a future return to Earth, have the right chemical recipe to preserve evidence of ancient Martian life, if it ever existed.
The new Perseverance research is detailed in three extensive studies published Wednesday, one in the journal Science and two in the journal Science Advances. The journal reports are highly technical and devoid of hype — daring to be dull as dirt — but the scientists involved translate them into a more exciting tale.
“It’s amazing. In pretty much every rock we’re finding organics,” said Abigail Allwood, a geologist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which operates the rover and the broader Mars Sample Return mission.
One of the studies concluded that the rocks in the crater experienced three different events in which they were exposed to water.
“Crucially, conditions in the rock during each time that water migrated through it could have supported small communities of microorganisms,” lead author Michael Tice, a geologist at Texas A&M University, said in an email. In a subsequent interview, he added, “We’re not going to know until we get the samples back to Earth.”
Perseverance made a bulls-eye landing in Jezero Crater on Feb. 18, 2021, and has been roaming it since, caching rock samples along the way for later scrutiny back on Earth. This is an ambitious, multiphase mission that will require NASA and its partner, the European Space Agency, to send another vehicle to the surface of Mars with the capability of launching samples into orbit. A spacecraft would then carry those samples back to Earth for laboratory research. The precise timetable is still to be determined, but NASA is hoping to have the samples on home turf in the early 2030s.
This study of Mars is part of the efflorescence of the young field of astrobiology, which includes the search for potentially habitable worlds and the first example of extraterrestrial life. Despite the efforts of generations of scientists, and notwithstanding the claims of UFO buffs, the discovery of life beyond Earth remains aspirational.
Even finding organics — life-friendly molecules with combinations of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen — is a far cry from discovering life or even proof of its presence in the past. Such molecules can be either biological or nonbiological in origin.
Still, Mars is front and center in NASA’s search because it has many favorable traits. Mars probably was far more Earthlike about 3 billion years ago, with warmer and wetter conditions. Life may have once existed on Earth and Mars simultaneously, and it is possible that it originated on Mars and spread to Earth via meteorites. And though the surface now is an arid wasteland, the planet could have liquid water in significant quantities beneath the surface, and possibly “cryptic” life.
Although the Perseverance rover does not have instruments to chemically detect living organisms if they exist today, its instruments give scientists the ability to study the Martian surface at a level of detail never before possible.
One of the new papers more closely examining Mars’s chemistry has delivered a surprise for geologists. They had assumed that they were going to dig up a bunch of sedimentary rocks. Instead the rocks are volcanic.
Jezero Crater formed in an impact event — a rock slamming into Mars — at least 3.5 billion years ago. The shallow crater clearly had water in it long ago. This could be determined from orbital images showing the remnants of a delta where a river flowed into the lake. Planetary geologists had assumed the floor of the crater was covered in sedimentary rock, formed from dirt and debris that slowly accumulated at the bottom of the lake.
If such sedimentary rock was ever there, it’s gone now. It may have eroded away, Tice said. The lack of sedimentary rock could mean that the lake didn’t last very long, which would be disappointing for the astrobiologists. Life as we know it needs water, and it takes time for more-complex life-forms to evolve. If the lake didn’t linger, life might have struggled to take root.
The volcanic rocks are not a disappointment, though, because they preserve loads of information about the Martian past, including the presence of organic molecules, scientists said. The presence of organic material on Mars had been confirmed in previous missions, but their precise nature and chemistry can’t be discerned through this kind of long-distance research and will require laboratory scrutiny on Earth, according to Bethany Ehlmann, a planetary scientist at Caltech and co-author of two of the new papers.
“Are they merely organics that kind of washed into the system — maybe from meteoritic material that was just part of the water? That would be the least exciting. Or are they little niches of microbial life living in the cavities of these rocks? That would be the most exciting,” Ehlmann said.
She added that the rover “is collecting an awesome set of samples to reveal Mars’s environmental history in all of its forms — the volcanic history, the history of water, the relationship of organics to those water-rich environments.”
All of this is an attempt to solve the fundamental mystery of Mars: What went wrong? How and when and why did this planet that apparently was congenial to life turn into such a harsh place? The Red Planet may not be a dead planet — the coroner’s report is incomplete — but it certainly resembles one.
Scientists point to something Mars lacks today: a global magnetic field like Earth’s. Such a field protects our atmosphere from the corrosive effects of the solar wind — high-energy particles steadily streaming from the sun that can strip away lighter molecules. Mars also lacks plate tectonics, the geological process that on Earth recycles the crust and continues to spew water and nutrient-rich lavas through active volcanoes.
Somewhere along the way, Mars’s magnetic field died, and then it became a different kind of planet. It lost almost all of its atmosphere. It became a frigid desert world. How quickly that happened is unknown, but that’s something that might be revealed by the volcanic rocks in the crater.
Magma contains some amount of iron, which is sensitive to a planet’s magnetism. As lava cools, it crystallizes into igneous rock, freezing electrons within iron-bearing minerals into patterns that could reveal a magnetic field’s traits, such as its orientation.
Benjamin Weiss, a planetary scientist at MIT and co-author of two of the papers, said in an email, “On balance, we are actually super lucky that there are igneous rocks in the crater, and that we happened to land right on them, since they are ideal for determining ages and studying the past history of Mars’ magnetic field.”
Once the mission can send its precious rock collection back to Earth, scientists may finally be able to tell if life ever found a foothold on Mars — which would raise new questions about whether, despite the dramatic transformation of the planet, life somehow managed to persevere.

Agent’s Take: Kareem Hunt and other players who should have been dealt before trade deadline
A record 10 deals were made on trading deadline day. Most notably, the Dolphins sent running back Chase Edmonds, a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Broncos for edge rusher Bradley Chubb and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
A rare intradivision trade took place. Tight end T.J. Hockenson isn’t leaving the NFC North. The Vikings, who have a 6-1 record, traded a 2023 second-round pick and a 2024 third-round pick to Detroit for the former Pro Bowler, a 2023 fourth-round pick and a conditional 2024 fourth-round pick.
Here are three more trades that should have been explored before the deadline that may have improved chances of teams to make the postseason. The financial ramifications of the moves are highlighted. Salary cap space is based off NFLPA data.
An acquiring team would have needed enough salary cap room to absorb the remainder of the player’s current salary. Since the trades would have occurred after Week 8, the acquiring team would have been responsible for 10/18ths of a player’s 2022 base salary and any other applicable salary components in his contract.
Trades can’t be executed again until the 2023 league year begins on March 15.

Making moves at the trading deadline is uncharacteristic for the Packers because of primarily relying on a draft-and-develop-roster-building philosophy. An attempt to address a glaring need at wide receiver was made by making a push for Chase Claypool. The Steelers dealt Claypool to the Bears for a 2023 second-round pick.
The Cowboys and Texans, who are in contention for the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft with a 1-5-1 record, discussed a Brandin Cooks deal up to the trade deadline. The Texans signed Cooks to a two-year extension in April, which runs through the 2024 season, averaging nearly $20 million per year. Cooks is scheduled to make $35 million over the next two years. His $18 million 2023 base salary being fully guaranteed in the extension was an issue.
The Texans reportedly wanted a second-round pick for Cooks. His remaining contract, particularly the salary guarantee, should have made the trade compensation less than the 2023 third-round compensatory pick and 2023 sixth-round pick the Giants got from the Chiefs for 2021 first-round pick (20th overall) Kadarius Toney, who is on a cost-controlled rookie contract.
Adding Cooks, who is unhappy the Texans didn’t trade him, would have been challenging from a salary cap standpoint because of the salary guarantee. The Packers already have $222.7 million of 2023 cap commitments with 47 players under contract.
Some flexibility with the approach is warranted when a 38-year-old Aaron Rodgers is at quarterback on the NFL’s only $50 million-per-year contract, which was signed in March. With a 3-5 record, the Packers have already lost more games than in 2021. Despite the record, the Packers aren’t in a rebuilding mode like the Bears.
Cooks, who is 29, has been traded three times during his career. The last trade was in 2020 when the Texans obtained him and a 2022 fourth-round pick from the Rams for a 2020 second-round pick. Cooks has been productive wherever he has played. He has amassed 1,000 yards receiving in a season with the Saints, Patriots, Rams and Texans.

Upgrading at running back was on the Rams’ radar screen. A run was made at Christian McCaffrey a couple of weeks ago but the Rams were outbid by the 49ers. The Rams rank both 31st in the NFL in rushing (68.4 yards per game) and yards per carry (3.3).
The Browns were reportedly willing to part with Hunt for a fourth-round pick. Hunt was probably the next best available running back option.
The desired draft compensation didn’t reflect the running back trade market. James Robinson was acquired by the Jets from the Jaguars for a conditional 2023 sixth-round pick that could become a fifth-round selection. The 49ers dealt Jeff Wilson to the Dolphins for a 2023 fifth-round pick. The Bills got Nyheim Hines from the Colts for running back Zack Moss and a conditional 2023 sixth-round pick that can elevate to a fifth-round draft choice.
The Rams don’t have a 2023 fourth-round pick because of acquiring Sony Michel from the Patriots in a 2021 preseason trade. The 2023 fifth-round pick went to the Browns for cornerback Troy Hill during this year’s draft. The Rams, though, are projected to get two 2023 compensatory fifth-round picks.
Hunt, who requested a trade in the preseason because the Browns refused to extend his contract, is expected to leave in free agency after the season. It’s conceivable that the Browns could get a 2024 compensatory fourth-round pick for Hunt’s impending departure depending on the contract he signs on the open market.
An unhappy Akers has no desire to continue playing for the Rams. He could have provided the Browns running back depth behind Nick Chubb next season. Akers is under contract in 2023 for $1,451,779, while Hunt and D’Ernest Johnson have expiring contracts.
Acquiring Hunt wouldn’t have solved all of the Rams’ problems. The offensive line may be a bigger concern and a consistent pass rush has been lacking. The Rams, who have a 3-4 record, could become the first Super Bowl winner to miss the playoffs since the Broncos in 2016.

The Giants having a 6-2 record is one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 season. Fourth-round pick Daniel Bellinger being out indefinitely after suffering a freak eye injury in Week 7 against the Jaguars leaves a hole at tight end. Chris Myarick and Tanner Hudson are the other tight ends on the roster.
Austin Hooper doesn’t seem to be a great fit in Tennessee’s run-centric offense. Geoff Swaim leads the Titans tight ends in playtime with 65.2%.
Hooper signed a one-year, $6 million deal, which included a $4.965 million signing bonus, to add a dimension to Tennessee’s offense that was missing in 2021 after Jonnu Smith left for the Patriots in free agency. Outside of catching a game-high three passes for 56 yards in a Week 7 win over the Colts, Hooper’s impact has been minimal. He has 10 catches (on 15 targets) for 116 yards in seven games. It’s Hooper’s slowest start to a season since he was a rookie in 2016.
The Titans have four tight ends on the roster. Hooper’s departure could have opened the door for 2022 fourth-round pick Chigoziem Okonkwo, to get more playing time.
