House speaker vote: Right-wing GOP-ers spurn talk of deal as McCarthy humiliation set for fourth day – live news

Kevin McCarthy loses sixth vote in House speaker bid, as chamber adjourns

The chaos on Capitol Hill is set to continue for a fourth day as the Republican party remains at war over who to elect as the next speaker of the House of Representatives.

Kevin McCarthy failed to secure enough votes during multiple roll call votes this week, prompting Congress to adjourn multiple times for negotiations.

As of late Thursday, the California Republican had lost 11 successive ballot counts. The House has adjourned for the night, so a potential 12th vote is on the horizon tomorrow.

Mr McCarthy told Punchbowl Newshe wasn’t going to put a “timeline” on his candidacy, but that he was confident he would be successful.

“We’ve got some progress going on,” he said. “Members are talking.”

The GOP House leader reportedly offered to make key concessions on Wednesday night including agreeing to a proposed rule change on how to oust a sitting speaker in the hope he could secure 218 votes to get him over the line.

However, a group of far-right Republicans are refusing to back him. Dubbed the “Never Kevins”, the group includes the likes of Lauren Boebert and Matt Gaetz who told reporters that the stalemate will not end with Mr McCarthy as speaker.

Despite rumouers of a backroom deal that would appease the Never Kevins, Ms Boebert told Politico on Thursday she hadn’t been involved in any negotiations.

From laughing to cringing: The most memorable images of three days of House speaker votes

With C-SPAN providing an unfiltered live feed of all the action on the floor of the House of Representatives as the votes continue to name a speaker, audiences have been treated to an interesting insight into how Congress functions – or dysfunctions, as the case may be.

Usually, congressional rules dictate what cameras can and cannot show, but with no representatives sworn in there are no such rules.

There have been some memorable still images captured by photographers present in the chamber as lawmakers have laughed, cringed, appeared frustrated and huddled in tense negotiation between ballots as Kevin McCarthy suffered defeat after defeat.

Here are some of the best images to emerge so far:

McCarthy defiant despite 11th humiliating defeat: ‘It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish’

Kevin McCarthy rang in a defiant tone after a seventh consecutive defeat in his bid to become House speaker as he said it was fine if some processes “take a little longer” and don’t “meet your deadline”.

The House on Thursday adjourned for the third time in as many days with a stalemate.

Despite this, Mr McCarthy told reporters after the adjournment that “if this takes a little longer and it doesn’t meet your deadline that’s okay. Because it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.” He added: “If we finish well, we’ll be very successful.”

The episode also poses more profound questions about the party’s identity and future. It’s a fresh reminder of Trump’s waning influence inside the GOP — even among the most vocal supporters of his Make America Great Again political movement — as he again seeks the party’s presidential nomination, exposing a leadership vacuum with no obvious alternative to unite the party and guide it through practical governing responsibilities and political challenges.

No members, no rules…

As Republicans continue to squabble over who will be the next speaker, there are essentially no members in the U.S. House of Representatives — only members-elect.

Without a speaker, none of the them can be sworn in, and the 118th Congress can’t convene or vote on any rules. Parliamentary procedure has been jettisoned in favor of controlled chaos. Members of both parties are unsure whether they can call votes or make motions on the floor because there is no speaker to rule on their requests. Committees can’t be formed and legislation can’t be passed.

House speaker vote update: Kevin McCarthy vows to fight on despite humiliation as House adjourns amid chaotic scenes

Kevin McCarthy loses sixth vote in House speaker bid, as chamber adjourns

The House of Representatives adjourned on Wednesday evening without having decided on a new speaker, as legislators appeared temporarily to not know what the final vote count was on the resolution.

The decision means Kevin McCarthy continues to face an uphill battle to earn enough votes to become the next House speaker. Mr McCarthy must get a majority of votes from members to be elected speaker after Republicans took control of the lower chamber in the November midterms.

“I don’t think voting tonight is produtive,” Mr McCarthy told reporters at the Capitol on Wednesday, following six unsuccessful votes for Speaker over the last two days. “Let people work a little more.”

As frustrated lawmakers huddled and gathered in smaller meetings Rep Matt Gaetz told reporters that this would not end with Mr McCarthy as speaker.

McCarthy delays next vote until Thursday after six humiliating defeats in Speaker bid

House lawmakers voted to adjourn for a second day Wednesday evening without selecting a speaker in a historic defeat for Republican leader Kevin McCarthy and a sign of the total lack of unity that has taken over his caucus.

The chamber had adjourned for several hours after three votes transpired throughout the afternoon and each failed to result in the election of a speaker. Conservative opponents of Mr McCarthy showed no signs of relenting in their effort to block his election to the role, while at the same time there was little evidence of any consensus candidate emerging to unify both sides.

The former minority leader’s allies continued an unrelenting barrage of attacks aimed at their conservative colleagues, but appeared no closer to winning any of them over. The House voted by an extremely narrow margin to adjourn until noon on Thursday, though it remains totally unclear if Mr McCarthy will make any progress towards the 218-vote threshold needed to secure the speakership.

Should he assume the title of Speaker of the House, his tenure will still be permanently marred by an astounding six defeats on the House floor — no leading candidate for a party that controls the House has lost on the first speaker’s election ballot in more than 100 years.

Humiliation for Liverpool as vibrant Napoli rip them to shreds | Champions League

A rupture occurred in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. It was Liverpool, ripped apart and destroyed by Napoli on a humiliating night when Jürgen Klopp’s team resembled Champions League novices not seasoned finalists from three of the past five years.

The worst European performance of Klopp’s near seven-year reign – it is hard to think of another that comes close to the unwanted accolade – produced one of Liverpool’s heaviest European defeats. And a rare, necessary apology from Klopp to the travelling fans afterwards.

Liverpool were torn open from the outset and unrecognisable in every facet of a Klopp team, leaving the manager to admit: “We need to reinvent ourselves.” The rupture will extend from the performance to the fall-out.

Klopp stated beforehand that he wanted Liverpool to extinguish the emotion and aggression that Napoli feed off inside their stadium through football principles and compact defending. His players never read the memo. They poured oil on the incendiary atmosphere inside Stadio Diego Armando Maradona instead with a passive, chaotic performance in which their defence was shredded time and again. By the time Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa scored Napoli’s second in the 31st minute it could easily have been 5-0 to Luciano Spalletti’s vibrant side. They had missed a penalty, hit a post and had a shot cleared off the line. The hosts sliced through at will in the first half especially. Liverpool, abysmal from back to front, offered little resistance and were flattered by a 4-1 defeat.

The Liverpool manager’s instructions were abandoned after 42 seconds. Amir Rrahmani and Stanislav Lobotka brought the ball out of defence with casual ease before Giovanni Di Lorenzo sent Victor Osimhen racing into a 50-50 with Alisson. The pacy striker got there first but swept a shot from a tight angle against the base of a post. Napoli had revealed their hand to play quick, incisive passes behind the Liverpool defence. The visitors paid no attention.

Osimhen had almost been played through again before the home side took a deserved fifth minute lead from the penalty spot. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, or Kvaradona as the Georgian has been christened following his explosive start to life in Naples, teed up Piotr Zielinski for a shot that deflected just wide of Alisson’s goal. It was deflected via the outstretched hand of James Milner, Liverpool’s captain for the night, and Zielinski sent Alisson the wrong way from the resulting, clear penalty. Milner soon went into the book for a heavy lunge on Zambo Anguissa.

Napoli were awarded a second penalty when VAR advised Spanish referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande to revisit a challenge by Virgil van Dijk on Osimhen. Play had continued after the striker’s attempt to turn inside the Liverpool defender but, on his pitch-side monitor, the referee spotted contact between Van Dijk and Osimhen’s right foot. Osimhen, not Zielinski, took the second spot kick and in the same direction as the first. Alisson sprung to his right to make a fine save and Di Lorenzo skied a gilt-edged chance from the rebound.

While Del Cerro Grande consulted his monitor Klopp railed at Fabinho and his defenders for their shambolic opening. Yet it got worse after the penalty miss. Kvaratskhelia embarrassed Fabinho by turning him three times in the same move inside the centre circle. Osimhen dispossessed the dawdling Joe Gomez to advance into the penalty area where Kvaratskhelia stood unmarked. The pass to the 21-year-old was delayed and poor, however, giving Van Dijk opportunity to clear his eventual shot off the line.

It was soon two when Gomez was dispossessed again, this time by Kvaratskhelia. Zambo Anguissa exchanged passes with Zielinski and strolled into the area without meeting a challenge before beating Alisson with a cool finish. It was his first Napoli goal but not the end of Liverpool’s torment. As bad as Klopp’s team were, and their problems were not confined to defence with Mohamed Salah struggling to control the most routine of passes, they created enough openings to have doused Napoli’s mood. Goalkeeper Alex Meret tipped over from a Trent Alexander-Arnold free-kick and saved well from a van Dijk header. Salah and Harvey Elliott also missed decent chances.

Liverpool appeared to have been granted relief when Osimhen limped off injured before the break only for his replacement, Giovanni Simeone, to score Napoli’s third with one of his first touches. Gomez’s dreadful night continued when he was out-manoeuvred and out-fought by the superb Kvaratskhelia near the by-line. The Georgian centred low for Diego Simeone’s son to convert a simple tap-in.

Gomez was unsurprisingly hooked at half-time and replaced by Joël Matip. But the rout rolled on. Within two minutes of the restart Simeone found Zielinski sprinting into the Liverpool area unmarked and, although the playmaker’s shot was parried by Alisson, he dinked the rebound in over the keeper. The finish underlined the swagger that was coursing through the Napoli team.

Luis Díaz reduced the deficit in style when he cut in from the left and beat Meret with a fine finish into the far corner. Liverpool’s first ever goal in Naples was no cause for celebration. The visitors controlled the closing stages but had been comprehensively beaten in the sweltering Italian heat, outclassed and humiliated by a team that wanted victory more.

Lamborghini Aventador Drag Races Tuned Porsche 911 Turbo S, Humiliation Follows

As everything around us seems to be going on at a much faster rate than say, 20 years ago, people are starting to lose their patience, and most of them would much rather skip over videos at an increasingly alarming rate, while just looking at said clips for a few seconds at most. This works great with content creators that come up with quarter-mile (402 meters) racing videos, which ultimately can reveal a winner in under 20 seconds.

And I’ve started enjoying these videos because I’m always trying to see if I can figure out the result, by just looking at the specs of the vehicles involved. And this time, we’re looking at a 740 horsepower Lamborghini Aventador SV going up against a tuned, 780 horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S. From the get-go, you could argue that the Porsche will come out on top, as it is turbocharged, and comes with more horsepower.

But let’s have a quick look at some more details for the two cars. They’re both putting down power through all four wheels, but the Lamborghini makes use of a naturally aspirated V12, while the 991.2 Porsche has a six-cylinder boxer engine with twin turbos. But the Porsche also has an ES750 performance package and weighs in at 3,527 lbs (1,600 kg). The Lamborghini is just a bit lighter, at 3,362 lbs (1,525 kg), but it also has less power.

You should never overlook torque figures either. The Lamborghini comes with 507 lb-ft (687 Nm) of torque from the factory. Now, the stock 991.2 Turbo S delivers 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque in between 2,100 to 4,250 Rpm. But the 911 Turbo S brought forth for the test has been given some improvements, and even though official torque figures aren’t revealed, I would bet that it now has at least 600 lb-ft (812 Nm) of torque available.

So the conclusion I’ve reached before watching the actual race was that the Porsche is bound to take the lead and finish 1st. The two cars will be going through four different tests: 0 to 60 mph (97 kph), quarter-mile (402 meters) run, head-to-head drag race, and a rolling race. For the first run of the day, the SV takes 3.01 seconds to hit 60 mph, while the Turbo S does it in just 2.25 seconds, setting a new show record.

For the quarter-mile (402 meters) run, the Lamborghini finishes the job in 10.91 seconds, with an exit speed of 127.37 mph (204.98 km/h), which isn’t half bad. But the Porsche once again steps in and asserts dominance by finishing the run in 9.73 seconds, with an exit speed of 143.41 mph (230.79 km/h) ! By now it’s probably safe to assume that the Lamborghini isn’t going to come out on top in any of the tests to follow either.

They go at it again, but this time the two cars are side by side. As expected the Porsche easily takes out the Lamborghini by the end of the run. They decide to go for a rematch, and even though the Aventador driver gets an advantage for the starting procedure, it still can’t keep up with the turbocharged 911. Even with all of its might, the Lamborghini just can’t keep up with the German-built supercar, and the rolling race provides the same conclusion as the previous tests. This tuned Porsche 911 Turbo S is just so much faster in a straight line!
