Derek Hough and fiancé Hayley Erbert involved in ‘scary’ car crash earlier this month

Derek Hough and his fiancé Hayley Erbert have revealed that they were in a ‘scary’ car crash earlier this month.

The Dancing with the Stars couple – who tragically lost their close friend Stephen ‘TWitch’ Boss to suicide this month – shared the frightening details of their ordeal on Instagram.

Hough, 37, and Erbert, 28, posted a video to their Instagram accounts on Friday that thoroughly documented their accident.

‘On December 12, Derek and I got into a pretty scary car accident in the mountains,’ wrote Hayley, captioning the pair’s video post.

She went on to describe the terrifying elements of their crash: ‘Our accident involved a steep hill, icy roads, a tree, and worst of all, the fear that we would slide off the mountain.’

‘The scariest part was that Hayley doesn’t remember anything,’ Derek shared in the comments section. ‘She was dazed afterwards, being cheerful saying we should keep going to dinner as blood ran down her face.’

‘That really scared me,’ wrote Hough. ‘She came to 20 minutes later when the firemen arrived.’

Grateful: ‘We have so much to be grateful for,’ Hayley wrote in her caption. She went on to state that there were ‘no other people involved.’ Derek wrote in the comments section that ‘Hayley doesn’t remember anything’

They’re okay: Erbert’s caption confirmed that they were ‘both okay’ and that she only ‘walked away a little banged up [with] a swollen face, and four stitches above my eyebrow’

The couple’s video begins with a jolting montage of a fire engine, Hayley’s injured face, their car crashed against a tree at night, and an ominous view of a foggy highway.

‘What do you do after you get in a car accident?’ asks Derek from behind the camera as he films Hailey recovering at home on their couch. ‘You go to the emergency room.’

Hayley tells of how she received stitches and that there was ‘nowhere to eat,’ so the couple went to the grocery store and got ‘tons of snacks.’

Their video proves this to be true as they show their lineup of junk food – pepperoni pizza, candy and chips.

‘One of the saddest things about tonight,’ Hayley says at the end of their video, ‘is that I can’t chew candy.’

Medical attention: Hayley thanked the paramedics in her caption for their ‘quick response’

‘We have so much to be grateful for,’ Hayley wrote in her caption. ‘First, that there were no other people involved. Second, the quick response from paramedics.’

‘And lastly,’ she added, ‘that we are both okay and that I only walked away a little banged up, a swollen face, and four stitches above my eyebrow.

Concluding her caption, Hayley wrote: ‘Now, more than ever, we realize how fragile life is and how important it is to love those around you. We hope that everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season. XO.’

The couple received an outpouring of love and support in their comments section, specifically from their Dancing with the Stars family.

‘Omg!’ commented DWTS dancer Cheryl Burke. ‘Thank God you’re both okay.’

‘I’m so glad you are safe,’ wrote DWTS judge Carrie Ann Inaba. ‘That’s so scary!’

Derek and Hayley got engaged in June after seven years of dating and their upcoming nuptials will have Michael Bublé as the wedding singer.

Dangerous conditions: The couple shared an image of the dangerous road conditions that led to their crash. Concluding her caption, Hayley wrote: ‘Now, more than ever, we realize how fragile life is and how important it is to love those around you. We hope that everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy holiday season. XO’

Lauren Hough Loses Lambda Prize Nomination After a Twitter Feud

She added: “I expected more from Lambda than character assassination by vague accusation based on Twitter rumors, for telling people — not one group, but people — to read the book.”

Acquaye and Scales said in a joint interview that an independent judging panel and Lambda Literary had both contributed to the decision to withdraw the book from contention, and said that the organization had not taken a position on “The Men.”

As a result of Hough’s posts, Scales said in the interview, “many trans folks felt like they couldn’t, they were not allowed to be in these conversations.” Acquaye said that the posts “did not uplift other queer people and these voices.”

In her Substack newsletter, Hough said that she had discussed “The Men” with Newman, including “how to make the book recognize the reality of transgender people.”

“Other books that started from this premise — all the men disappear — have erased the existence of trans people, and it was important to her not to do that, to be as sensitive as possible,” Hough wrote. “So when I saw people assuming that simple idea was the entirety of the plot, I told them to read the book before assuming the worst.”

For this, she wrote, she was labeled a trans-exclusionary radical feminist — something she denied.

(Previous books with similar, gender-eliminating or -separating scenarios “were written before there was much attention on anything beyond a gender binary,” said Brian Attebery, an English professor at Idaho State University who has written about gender in science fiction.)

Hough lamented that Twitter users had so harshly criticized a book they had not read.

“They call it ‘call-out culture,’” she wrote on Substack, “because bullying is wrong, unless your target is someone you don’t like, for social justice reasons, of course.”

In an email Monday, Newman declined to comment on her forthcoming book but confirmed Hough’s account of their friendship. “She’s also a person of great integrity and decency,” added Newman. “And she’s an amazing writer whose book deserves all the awards.”
