Donald Trump dines with white nationalist Nick Fuentes and hip hop artist Ye at Mar-a-Lago

Comment

Former president Donald Trump dined with far-right activist Nick Fuentes and hip-hop artist Ye at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla., earlier this week, drawing intense criticism for associating with two figures who have promoted antisemitism and hate.

Advisers to Trump privately acknowledged that the decision to host the Tuesday dinner, just one week after Trump launched his reelection bid, was a significant concern. One adviser described it as “horrible” and another as “totally awful.” They and others in Trump’s orbit spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions.

David M. Friedman, who served as his ambassador to Israel, publicly took Trump to task for consorting with the troublesome pair, tweeting that the former president was “better than this.”

The private dinner is the latest example of how the former president has courted individuals with extreme or racist views. Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, recently lost billions of dollars of net worth after businesses cut ties with him for repeatedly making antisemitic remarks. Fuentes, a political commentator on YouTube, has a history of touting white nationalist ideas.

Ye posted a video Thursday to Twitter featuring far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos listening to the rapper recap his Tuesday meeting with Trump. The rapper, who has said he plans to run for president in 2024, said he asked Trump to be his running mate. Trump was uninterested, Ye said, but he was “really impressed” with Fuentes.

“Nick Fuentes, unlike so many of the lawyers and so many people that he was left with on his 2020 campaign, he’s actually a loyalist,” Ye, who returned to Twitter this week after a recent ban, said in the video.

Trump said he only planned to have dinner with Ye, who has repeatedly expressed his support for the former president. The rapper brought Fuentes along uninvited, Trump said.

“This past week, Kanye West called me to have dinner at Mar-a-Lago,” the former president said Friday on Truth Social. “Shortly thereafter, he unexpectedly showed up with three of his friends, whom I knew nothing about.”

“We had dinner on Tuesday evening with many members present on the back patio,” Trump added. “The dinner was quick and uneventful. They then left for the airport.”

Trump has insisted to aides since Tuesday that he did not know Fuentes, a Trump supporter active on Truth Social, the former president’s social media network, though some in his circle said they were skeptical.

Karen Giorno, a former Trump aide who ran the then-candidate’s Florida campaign in 2016 before becoming a senior adviser, said she arrived at the club in a car with Ye and Fuentes. She said she didn’t previously know Fuentes and met him earlier that day for the first time. The group came in together past security, she said.

A person familiar with the matter said Fuentes was not on the list but got in because he was a guest of the rapper.

“There is no system now that he’s not the president. If you’re on the list, you can drive up to the gate, and for someone like Kanye West, he’s going to bring his staff or other people with him in the club,” this person said. “No one is carefully checking.”

Giorno said Trump greeted the trio: Ye, Fuentes and another man who she only knew as Jamal, alone without staff or family in the foyer of the club, and “graciously” told the rapper his group should join for dinner at his customary table on the patio. They were served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner — not on the menu — with Ye getting a second helping of stuffing.

She said Trump “obviously” recognized her and the rapper, but did not seem to recognize Fuentes initially. A person familiar with the dinner said West introduced the 24-year-old as “Nick.”

Giorno said she sat to the president’s right, while the rapper sat to his left, and Fuentes and another guest, Jamal, an employee at Boeing who interested Trump with talk about plane contracts, sat across the table, she said. The rapper took pictures with many members of the club, she said.

Fuentes, host of YouTube’s “America First” show, grew up Catholic in the Chicago suburbs before dropping out of Boston University. Since then, he’s become popular with young conservatives critical of establishment Republicans for not taking hard-line positions on cultural issues. Fuentes attended the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville where a white nationalist killed an anti-racism protester, but has denied being a neo-Nazi or a white nationalist. He has expressed concern on his show about the U.S. population becoming less White, previously arguing that “dramatic and radical change” will bring “not-insignificant consequences, and not all of them good.”

Giorno said she did not hear Ye or Fuentes say anything that could be viewed as antisemitic or racist, but Fuentes did share his opinion on the former president’s reelection campaign. Trump was quickly impressed by Fuentes and peppered him with questions, Giorno said.

“He was impressed with Nick and his knowledge of Trump World,” she said. “Nick knew people and figures and speeches and rallies and what surrounded the Trump culture, particularly when it came to the base.”

And Trump wanted to talk about his campaign, including those who would run against him in 2024, his announcement speech and how he was going to win. Fuentes told Trump that he preferred when he was fiery and off-the-cuff, particularly as it related to his announcement speech, Giorno said. Trump repeatedly talked about his base and young voters, Giorno said. Another person familiar with the dinner said Trump liked Fuentes because he flattered him and encouraged his most pugilistic instincts.

“Did the president and Nick have a casual conversation about his past presidency, the announcement and style, and polling and prospects of other people coming into the primary, and what young people thought about him? Yeah they did,” Giorno said.

The casual dinner — which featured comments about celebrities, American politics and more — turned heated when Trump “started talking negatively” about Kim Kardashian, Ye’s former wife, Giorno said.

Tensions also rose when the rapper asked Trump to join his 2024 ticket as vice president, which he rejected.

A person familiar with the dinner said it was “cordial until it wasn’t.” Trump grew loud and animated, the person said. “Everyone was paying attention,” the person said.

“It was strained,” the person said, and wrapped after about two hours. “It ended cordial but tense,” the person said.

Trump’s dinner with the two men drew criticism from both Republicans and Democrats.

Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, a political group that supports Jewish Republicans, challenged the former president and other political leaders to distance themselves from Fuentes and Ye.

“We strongly condemn the virulent antisemitism of Kanye West and Nick Fuentes and call on all political leaders to reject their messages of hate and refuse to meet with them,” Brooks told The Post on Friday.

The former president “befriending” Ye and Fuentes is telling, Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) tweeted Friday. “Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are,” Torres wrote.

Even some of the president’s usual allies were publicly critical of the meeting, including his former ambassador to Israel.

In a tweet in which he referred to “my friend Donald Trump,” Friedman wrote: “Even a social visit from an antisemite like Kanye West and human scum like Nick Fuentes is unacceptable. I urge you to throw those bums out, disavow them and relegate them to the dustbin of history where they belong.”

NASA Mars Helicopter Goes for a Hop, Proves It’s Still Airworthy

This story is part of Welcome to Mars, our series exploring the red planet.

It’s been a stressful time for NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter on Mars. The remarkable flying machine has outlived its expected lifespan and weathered technical snafus, while freezing temps and dusty conditions have made it hard to charge its solar-powered batteries enough to get off the ground. But it still flies.

NASA announced Monday that Ingenuity successfully pulled off its 30th flight.

“After a two-month hiatus, the rotorcraft did a short hop over the weekend so the team can check its vitals and knock some dust off the solar panel,” NASA JPL tweeted along with a photo showing the Martian surface with one of Ingenuity’s feet peeking out of the corner.

The short-hop flight was designed to cover just 6.5 feet (2 meters) and last 33 seconds, but that small leap is a big deal for the helicopter.

It’s winter in Jezero Crater where the Perseverance rover (which doesn’t rely on solar power) is exploring an ancient river delta region. Ingenuity hasn’t been getting enough sunlight to fully charge its batteries, so it took a vacation from flight. Flight 29 took place on June 11, so the helicopter has survived more than two months of frigid overnight temperatures.

According to NASA, the temperatures drop as low as minus 124 Fahrenheit (minus 86 Celsius) in Jezero Crater.

The future is looking brighter for Ingenuity as conditions in the crater improve.

“With higher battery states of charge will come longer flights, and eventually Ingenuity will be able to power its internal heaters overnight, which will stop its electronics from freezing in the Martian cold each evening,” wrote Ingenuity team lead Teddy Tzanetos in a status update on Friday prior to the flight.

The Ingenuity team hopes the plucky rotorcraft will soon get back to scouting out the delta region, working alongside Perseverance to better understand this fascinating place on Mars.

We Finally Know The Genetic Reason Why This Bunny Walks on Its Front Paws

Selective breeding by humans has led to some incredibly odd and unfortunate pets over the years, and the sauteur d’Alfort rabbit is among the strangest of the lot.

This rare breed of bunny does not hop or walk like any other rabbit or hare in existence. When the sauteur is ready to go, it kicks its hind legs into the air and bounces forward on its front paws, like a human acrobat walking on their hands.

While this may seem like an amusing trait, it sadly comes with other debilitating problems too. Now, the one bunny that can’t hop properly has helped us better understand the genetics of hopping in mammals.

Crossing a single male sauteur with a single female of the New Zealand white breed and then crossing the resulting offspring, researchers raised 52 bunnies, 23 percent of which carried two copies of the mutant gene similar to the original father. These numbers match the statistics expected when there is only one recessive gene involved in a mutation.

Pooling the DNA of the sauteur and non-sauteur young, researchers used whole-genome sequencing to compare the two groups. In the end – as they anticipated – there was only one gene that stood out.

The cause of the sauteur’s defective jumping appears to lie with a mutation in an evolutionary conserved site of a gene known as RORB, which provides instructions to mammalian cells so they can create certain proteins.

RORB proteins are generally found throughout the rabbit nervous system, where they help turn genetic code into a protein building template. This particular mutation, however, causes a particularly sharp decrease in the number of spinal cord neurons that can actually produce this protein.

Two copies of the RORB mutation, in fact, resulted in no proteins in the spinal cord at all, and this was tied to an inability to hop. Other rabbits in the litter capable of jumping with their hind legs showed no such protein loss.

The RORB gene, the authors conclude, must be what allows rabbits to bound around. It could also be the key to other mammal hopping, too.

Over the years, there’s been a lot of scientific interest in the special physiology and biomechanics that allow mammals – like kangaroos, bunnies, hares and some mice – to hop, but the underlying genetics of this feat have rarely been considered.

One of the few studies out there recently found mice with the same RORB mutation as sauteur rabbits also cannot hop like normal. Instead, these rodents waddle around on their front paws like a duck, with their tails and hind legs sticking up in the air.

“I spent four years looking at these mice doing little handstands, and now I get to see a rabbit do the same handstand,” neuroscientist Stephanie Koch from the University College London told Science News. “It’s amazing.”

Koch’s study on rabbits is the first to describe a specific gene required for leaping or hopping, and it lines up extremely well with what she’s been observing in mutant mice.

Similar to mutant rodents, sauteur rabbits also show other anatomical defects beyond their strange walk. Many are born blind and develop cataracts in their first year of life. RORB knock-out mice also show retinal degeneration.

In mice, the RORB gene appears to play an essential role in differentiating cells in both the brain’s cortex and the retina. It might also do something similar in the spinal cord, which is involved in the regulation of sensory information and locomotion among mammals.

As such, this lack of proteins might be what is causing the hind legs of rabbits and mice to lift instead of leaping. In sauteur rabbits, for instance, the RORB mutation appears to cause defects in the differentiation of spinal cord interneurons, although whether this is actually causing the bizarre locomotion remains unclear.

“In addition to its expression in the spinal cord, RORB is also expressed in many regions in the brain such as the primary somatosensory, auditory, visual and motor cortex, in some thalamus and hypothalamus nuclei, in the pituitary gland and in the superior colliculus,” the authors write.

“Thus, we cannot exclude the possibility that an alteration of RORB function in the brain contributes to the locomotion phenotype characteristic for the sauteur rabbits.”

The effects of the RORB mutation will require more study, but it’s obvious it’s involved somehow. This was the only variant identified in the whole genome sequence of rabbits that had any impact on hopping.

While there might well be more genes involved in bunny hopping, it seems that poor sauteur rabbits have certainly pointed us in the direction of one.

The study was published in PLOS Genetics

Researchers find the secret of the bunny hop: it’s all in the genes | Genetics

It sounds like a conundrum that Rudyard Kipling would have tackled in his Just So stories, but it turns out the reason why rabbits hop is rooted not in fables but genetics.

Researchers say that by studying an unusual breed of bunny that walks on its front paws, they have pinpointed a key gene that is necessary for animals to adopt a typical gait. For rabbits, as well as animals such as hares and kangaroos, that is the ability to hop.

“If you [were to] introduce the same mutation [seen in these unusual rabbits] in humans, you would not remove hopping but you will change our locomotion in some other way,” said Prof Leif Andersson, co-author of the research, from Uppsala University in Sweden.

Writing in the journal Plos Genetics, Andersson and colleagues reported how they made their discovery by focusing on the sauteur d’Alfort breed of domestic rabbit. Rather than hopping, these animals adopt a “handstand” pose and walk forward on their front paws. The breed is also known for having eye problems, including blindness and cataracts.

Both characteristics were known from breeding experiments to be caused by a mutation in a single gene. However, which gene contained the mutation was unknown.

Why do bunnies hop? – video

To delve deeper, Andersson and colleagues bred sauteur d’Alfort rabbits with New Zealand white rabbits – a breed that hops – confirming previous theories that two copies of the mutant gene are needed for rabbits to lose their bounce .

The researchers then carried out a genetic analysis of the rabbits, revealing the inability to hop appears to be down to a mutation at a single position in a gene known as RORB. The sauteur d’Alfort rabbits were found to have two copies of this mutation. However, the mutation was not found in other wild and domestic breeds of rabbit, or in a host of other mammals including humans.

“The DNA sequences that are important for function are highly conserved across species,” said Andersson.

Crucially, said Andersson, the RORB gene gives rise to a protein that switches other genes on and off. If this gene does not function properly, he added, the production of other proteins in the spinal cord may not be properly regulated, affecting the way the spinal cord coordinates messages between the brain and muscles in the limbs.

Indeed, further work by the team found that rabbits with two copies of the RORB mutation have no detectable RORB protein in their spinal cord.

The team say their discovery ties in with previous work showing that mice which had a mutation in their RORB gene not only had eye problems but an unusual walk akin to a duck waddle.

However, Andersson said the RORB gene was not the only gene important for gait. For example, the ability for horses to amble, found in certain breeds such as the Icelandic pony, has previously been linked to a mutation in a gene known as DMRT3.

Arne Ludwig, professor of animal genetics at the Albrecht Daniel Thaer-Institute at Humboldt University and the Leibniz Institute for zoo and wildlife research in Berlin, who was not involved in the study, said gait is a complex trait.

“Several genes are involved and this study shows that RORB is one of them,” he said.

But, he added, the rearing of sauteur d’Alfort rabbits is of concern given their host of disorders.

“Likely sauteur rabbits would have no chance to survive in nature,” he said.
