Tyre Nichols updates: Mourners honour ‘beautiful person’ at Memphis funeral as family urges Congress to act

‘We mourn with you’: Kamala Harris gives passionate speech at Tyre Nichols’ funeral

A funeral for Tyre Nichols is underway in Memphis, more than three weeks after the 29-year-old Black man was fatally beaten by a group of police officers on 7 January. He died in hospital three days later.

Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the congregation at at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, where Rev Al Sharpton also delivered the eulogy and prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump issued a “call to action” in the wake of Nichols’s death and the police killings of Black Americans.

Rev Sharpton condemned the actions of the Black officers who are charged with Nichols’s murder, arguing that the sacrifies of civil rights leaders like Dr Martin Luther King Jr paved the way for their public service.

“People had to march and go to jail and some people lost their lives to open the doors for you. How dare you act like that sacrifice was for nothing?” he said.

City officials released the prior disciplinary records for the five officers who are now charged with murder, revealing that four of them had prior complaints against them.

Full story: Kamala Harris speaks at Tyre Nichols funeral in Memphis calling on Congress to pass police reform legislation

Vice President Kamala Harris urged Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, bipartisan police reform legislation that passed the House of Representatives in 2021 but stalled in a deadlocked Senate with Republican opposition.

The bill, named in honour of the Black man who was murdered by Minneapolis police officers in 2020, was co-authored by then-Senator Harris.

“Let the memory of Tyre shine a light on the path toward peace and justice,” Ms Harris said in her brief remarks.

Marjorie Taylor Greene compares Tyre Nichols’ beating to shooting of Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt

Far-right congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene invoked the fatal shooting of Capitol rioter Ashli Babbitt after the mention of Tyre Nichols, who was fatally beaten by police.

She then suggested that people who have been jailed for their roles in the insurrection are facing “civil rights abuse” in jail.

Ms Greene went on to say that Congress was doing nothing to address the treatment of other participants in the attack, many of whom remain incarcerated ahead of their respective trials.

There’s a simple reason for that: Ms Babbitt was part of a crowd that was actively trying to breach a door that had been barricaded in a restricted area. She was shot by an officer while attempting to climb through a window that her fellow rioters had broken. Federal prosecutors have closed the case and the officer was cleared of wrondoing.

Initial Memphis police report falsely claims Tyre Nichols ‘fought’ officers

A leaked incident report on Tyre Nichols’ arrest and fatal beating by Memphis police officers contains glaring inaccuracies that were later exposed after the release of bodycam and surveillance footage.

The report, written two hours after Nichols’ beating on 7 January, claimed that the 29-year-old was “irate” and refused lawful detention, tried to start a fight with officers, and also attempted to take an officer’s gun, during an initial traffic stop.

LaToya Yizar, who says her mother was Tyre Nichols’ godmother, read a poem at his funeral invoking the words he told officers the night he was beaten.

From the lectern at Mississippi Boulevard Baptist Church in Memphis, she read “I’m Just Trying to Go Home”.

In his eulogy, the Rev Al Sharpton said that “home is not just a place.”

“Home is where you are at peace. Home is where you don’t have to keep your dukes up. Home is where you’re not vulnerable,” he said. “Home is where everything is all right.”

Duchess of Cornwall says it will be a ‘great honour’ to become Queen Consort

The Duchess of Cornwall has said it will be a ‘great honour’ to become Queen Consort and said that she will use the position will help her to highlight the causes she supports.

Speaking to BBC presenter Emma Barnett about her work with victims of domestic violence, Camilla, 74,  said she would not ‘give up mid-channel’, saying she hopes to continue ‘doing it for a lifetime’.

It comes after The Queen issued her royal seal of approval for the duchess to use the title of Queen when her husband, Prince Charles, becomes King.

Speaking to Emma at Clarence House for Woman’s Hour and BBC Breakfast, Camilla said: ‘Of course it’s a great honour (becoming Queen Consort), it couldn’t be anything else. But it does help it.

Camilla was also reunited with Diana Parkes, whose daughter Joanna Simpson was killed by her husband in 2010,

The duchess has previously cited Ms Parkes as the inspiration behind her work with domestic abuse victims, according to the BBC.

‘I’m going to keep up with these causes. You know if I start something like this, I’m not going to give up mid-channel, I’m just going to keep going to try and help the likes of people like Diana … I hope I should be doing it for a lifetime.’

During the interview, she called for more action to tackle violence against women.

‘We do need to help culture change. And I think we have to start at the beginning, I think children at school have got to be taught respect,’ the duchess said.

‘We have got to go back to the beginnings and… just build up this idea that you have to have respect for human beings, it’s lack of respect.

‘It’s treating women like chattels and people thinking they can get away with it. I’m sure a lot of people do it and think that there’s nothing wrong.

‘I don’t think (the issue of abuse has) got any better. I think the lockdown was terrible because people actually couldn’t escape. And you see the numbers have gone up.

Speaking to BBC presenter Emma Barnett about her work with victims of domestic violence, Camilla, 74, said she would not ‘give up mid-channel’, saying she hopes to continue ‘doing it for a lifetime’.

‘But on the other hand, I think it’s drawn a lot of people’s attention to it. I think it’s talked about much more now.’

Camilla has been a long-term advocate for the cause.

Earlier this month she met with domestic abuse survivors at Bath charity Voices.

She has also previously spoken about the need for more to be done to prevent violence against women, with references made to the killings of Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.

The duchess also told Barnett she hoped the Queen’s Jubilee would give people the opportunity to ‘all get together and celebrate’.

She said: ‘It’s always lovely to have something happy to look forward to, isn’t it? I mean, we’ve all been through hard times. We’ve all been locked away from our family and friends. And now we could all get together again and celebrate.’

Camilla recently caught Covid for the first time, with Clarence House confirming on 14th February she had tested positive.

The interview was released as The Queen has held her weekly telephone audience with the Prime Minister despite having Covid-19.

The Queen ended years of speculation and controversy over the duchess’s future title by publicly announcing it was her ‘sincere wish’ that Camilla should be known as Queen Consort when the time came.

Barnardo’s interim co-chief executive Michelle Lee-Izu said: ‘We are very grateful to our Royal Patron, The Duchess of Cornwall, for raising awareness of this important issue.

‘Children affected by domestic abuse are some of the most vulnerable in the country and at Barnardo’s we see first-hand the devastating impact of this abuse on children’s wellbeing and future outcomes.’

The full interview is due to air on February 24 on Woman’s Hour and BBC Breakfast and was conducted in person around three weeks ago, before Camilla was diagnosed with coronavirus.

The interview was released as The Queen has held her weekly telephone audience with the Prime Minister despite having Covid-19.

The monarch, 95, who tested positive for coronavirus on Sunday, cancelled virtual audiences on Tuesday as she continued to suffer from mild cold-like symptoms.

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: ‘Her Majesty did speak to the Prime Minister this evening.’

Duchess of Cornwall is awarded highest honour by the Queen

The Queen is personally awarding the Duchess of Cornwall the highest honour possible thanks to her ‘service to the sovereign’, it was announced last night.

Camilla is to be made a Royal Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, the oldest and most senior of the Orders of Chivalry in Britain, Buckingham Palace said.

The appointment will be seen as a royal seal of approval for the loyalty and discretion Camilla has shown since her marriage to the Prince of Wales in 2005.

Tony Blair gets the call, too (and becomes a Sir)

The decision to ennoble the former prime minister – or Sir Tony, as he will now be known – has been much debated in recent years

Tony Blair has been appointed to the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion.

The decision to ennoble the former prime minister – or Sir Tony, as he will now be known – has been much debated in recent years.

All but one of the prime ministers before him were appointed a few years after leaving office. But Sir Tony waited over 14 years.

It had been suggested that the Queen’s strained relationship with him during his ten years in power may have contributed to the ‘snub’.

But Charles has never made any secret of his desire for Camilla to become queen by his side.

And it is known that the Queen has been impressed by the way in which her daughter-in-law has embraced her public role and shown quiet and respectful dedication to both her husband and the institution of the monarchy.

It was also revealed that Baroness Amos is to be made a Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter – the first person from an ethnic minority to be appointed.

She is a Labour politician and diplomat who has served as UN Under-Secretary-General for humanitarian affairs and British High Commissioner to Australia.

She was also Leader of the House of Lords and the chief executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission.

The Order of the Garter was established by King Edward III in 1348 after he was inspired by the tales of King Arthur and the chivalry of the Knights of the Round Table.

The number of Knights and Ladies Companion is limited to 24 in total at any one time.

There is no limit to the number of royal members, however. Initially, the order’s members were limited to the aristocracy but they are now men and women chosen from a variety of backgrounds, in recognition for their public service, their contribution to national life, or their personal service to the sovereign.

The honour is personally bestowed by the monarch, with no interference from the Government.

The patron saint of the order is St George and the spiritual home is St George’s Chapel at Windsor.

Its motto is ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’, Old French for ‘shame on him who thinks evil of it’. Vacancies are announced on St George’s Day and only occasionally at New Year. It is thought that the Queen wanted this year’s announcement to tie in with the New Year’s Honours.

Prince Philip was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Garter by King George VI in 1947 – and it is believed that the Queen also wanted to ensure that both her son and his wife were members before her own change of reign.

A Garter Day procession is held each June before a short service in St George’s Chapel, at which any new companions are installed.

ROBERT HARDMAN: Camilla being made a Lady of the Order of the Garter is a strong hint that she could be named Queen instead of Princess Consort

By ROBERT HARDMAN for the Daily Mail

Even in royal circles, there is no more exalted honour than being a Knight or a Lady of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Look at the official title of the Prince of Wales, for example: the first letters after his name are ‘KG’.

Being a member of the Garter trumps everything else.

And from today, anyone writing to the Duchess of Cornwall will need to put ‘LG’ – Lady Companion of the Order of the Garter – after her name.

The fact that the Queen has now bestowed it on the Duchess of Cornwall is the greatest recognition to date of the role that the former Camilla Parker Bowles now plays in the life of the monarchy. The honour, after all, even eluded Diana

The order goes back to Edward III and the days of knights in shining armour.

There are three tiers of membership, starting with the Knights Companion and Ladies Companion: 24 eminent public figures hand-picked by the Sovereign.

Then there are ‘Extra’ Knights and Ladies, an honorary membership for foreign monarchs.

Most senior of all are the Royal Knights and Ladies: traditionally restricted to a sprinkling of family who were born royal, plus the Sovereign’s consort.

The Queen is making a clear statement. She has been deeply impressed by the good-natured way in which the duchess has supported the Prince of Wales as he has shouldered more duties on the Queen’s behalf.

‘It’s an indication of the Queen’s total confidence in the Duchess of Cornwall,’ says Hugo Vickers, author of Royal Orders and an authority on the Garter.

The Queen knows how important it is to have a dependable soulmate. She said as much in her Christmas Day tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh. The only person more proud of this award than the duchess will be Prince Charles himself.

It also points to a decision that will need to be made sooner or later.

For now, the official position is that the duchess will be styled the ‘Princess Consort’ in the next reign, a position set at her 2005 wedding to Charles. It is an increasingly incongruous title given that the wife of a King is always Queen.

The Royal Family do not want to go near this subject since it invokes memories of the prince’s divorce from Diana and the dark days after her death. It is an issue for another day.

This honour, though, makes it pretty clear what the current Monarch thinks.

You Kidding Me? What An Honour

US President Joe Biden during a virtual call to congratulate the NASA JPL Perseverance team.

Washington:

Indian-American aerospace engineer Dr Swati Mohan, who played a pivotal role in the successful landing of NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars, has told US President Joe Biden that her path to the premier US space agency began when she watched the first episode of Star Trek as a child.

Dr Mohan is the guidance and controls operations lead for the Perseverance rover mission, acting as the “eyes and ears” for NASA’s most sophisticated spacecraft to date.

She played a key role in landing the US space agency’s historic Perseverance rover on the Martian surface on February 18. Dr Mohan was also the first to confirm that the rover had successfully touched down on the Martian surface after surviving a particularly tricky plunge through the atmosphere of the Red Planet.

Dr Mohan, who emigrated from India to the US when she was only a year old, told Biden that her path actually started way back when she was a child, watching the first episode of Star Trek, the popular TV show.

“In addition to those fantastical scenes of space, what really captured my attention was this really close-knit team which was working together, manipulating this technological marvel with the sole purpose of exploring space and understanding new things and seeking new life,” Swati Mohan told Joe Biden during a virtual interaction on Thursday.

US President Biden congratulated the NASA team responsible for the successful landing of the six-wheeled rover on Mars and for giving the country a “dose of confidence” at a moment when the nation’s reputation as a scientific leader has been tattered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Joe Biden, speaking during a video conference call with the leadership of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team led by Dr Michael Watkins, expressed awe over the landing of the Perseverance.

Interacting with Joe Biden, Dr Mohan said: “You know, Perseverance is my first mission at JPL, where I have gotten to work from the very beginning of formulation, all the way through operations, and it made me feel like I was part of that crew. Being able to work with this incredibly diverse, talented team that has become like a family, spending years creating our own technological marvel has been a privilege.”

“Those last days and weeks leading up to landing day, it was pretty smooth, but we were all still really nervous and, frankly, terrified until we got through those final seven minutes.”

Dr Mohan helmed the mission’s attitude control system, which helps make sure the spacecraft is heading in the direction it needs to be.

“To be able to call touchdown safely, to see those first images come back from Mars, to see the place where we have never been able to go to on Mars before and go there — reach there for the express purpose of seeking out new life just made it feel like I was living in a dream,” said the Indian-American engineer.

“Now that tremendous relief has passed for the team of being able to be there safely, all that’s left is the excitement and the thrill of all the scientific discoveries that are yet to come and what Perseverance can actually find — and hopefully find those signs of past life on Mars,” Dr Mohan said.

She thanked the US President for speaking to the NASA team. “Thank you for taking the time to speak with us,” she said.

Joe Biden said: “Are you kidding me? What an honour this is. This is an incredible honour. And it’s amazing. Indian – of descent – Americans are taking over the country: you (Swati Mohan), my Vice President (Kamala Harris), my speech writer Vinay (Reddy). I tell you what. But thank you. You guys are incredible.”

“I tell you what, you said you feel like you’re ‘living a dream’ — you’ve created a dream for millions and millions of young kids, young Americans. You talk about STEM. You — it was — look, the thing that I found so exhilarating about this: You all did this — the whole team — the team I can see now and the entire team at JPL — what you did: You restored a dose of confidence in the American people,” Joe Biden said.

Dr Mohan went on to study mechanical and aerospace engineering at Cornell University, followed by a masters degree and doctorate in aeronautics and astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Eventually, she landed at NASA.

“They were beginning to wonder about us. They were beginning to wonder: Are we still the country we always believed we were? You guys did it. You guys gave a sense of ‘America is back.’ It’s astounding what you did. You should not underestimate it. You should not underestimate it,” the US President said.

“You did it the most American way: You believed in science, you believed in hard work, and you believed there wasn’t a darn thing you couldn’t do if you put your minds together,” he said.

One of the reasons why America is “such an incredible country is we’re such a diverse country. We bring the best out of every single solitary culture in the world here in the United States of America, and we give people an opportunity to let their dreams run forward,” Joe Biden said.

“Everyone was so down the last years about: Is America still the — fount of change? And are we still the country that has hopes and develops and pursues the most unlikely things to happen? And we are. And you all demonstrated it. I really mean this. It’s so much bigger than landing Perseverance on Mars. It’s about the American spirit, and you brought it back. You brought back in a moment we so desperately need it,” he observed.

Dr Mohan later tweeted: “I’m pretty sure I’m still in a dream. It’s amazing what we can do when we dare mighty things, together.” She also tagged a video of her interaction with Joe Biden.
