VP Kamala Harris, Rev. Al Sharpton and family honor Tyre Nichols at his funeral – FOX13 News Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Tyre Nichols, who died on January 10, 2023, three days after five former Memphis Police officers were caught on camera beating the 29-year-old at the intersection of Ross Road and Raines Road, was honored by family and dignitaries at his funeral service February 1.

Nichols’ funeral was held at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr., and Justin Smith, the five former Memphis Police officers which MPD said were seen beating Nichols in that video, were all charged with two counts of official misconduct, one count of official oppression, one count of second-degree murder, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of aggravated kidnapping.

TYRE NICHOLS’ MOTHER, FAMILY AND MOURNERS SAY GOODBYE

“For this to happen to him is just unimaginable,” said RowVaughn Wells, Nichols’ mother.

Nichols was laid to rest, Wednesday, at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis.

“I promise you the only thing that’s keeping me going is I believe my son was sent here on an assignment from God,” said Wells.

Nichols’ mother, brother and siblings spoke at the funeral.

“We’re looking forward to getting justice for all the families over there, not just ours,” said Rodney Wells, Nichols’ father.

The Reverend Al Sharpton eulogized Nichols.

“Let’s get rid of qualified immunity and see if you learn the same manners you have on the white side of town,” Rev. Sharpton said. “‘Well reverend, you don’t understand.  How are they going to keep crime down in the Black community and at the same time not be tough and rough?’,” Rev. Sharpton continued. “Well, they do it the same way they do it on the white side of the town and they keep the crime down without rough and touch. How do you have the same department and keep crime down on one side of town without beating folk to death, but you can’t do it on the other side of town?  I can’t speak for everybody gathering, but for me, I believe if that man had been white you wouldn’t have beat him like that, that night … In the city that Doctor King lost his life, not far away from that balcony you beat a brother to death. There’s nothing more insulting and offensive to those of us who fought to open doors and you walk through those doors and act like the folks we had to fight for to get you through those doors,” said Reverend Sharpton.

Mississippi Blvd Celebration Choir continues celebrating life of Tyre Nichols:

He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more death, no more sorrow, no more crying and no more pain. These things are gone forever and the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new and then he said to me, ‘Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true,” Norman said while reading new testament scripture during the service.

Ring of Honor Star Jay Briscoe Dies in Car Accident at 38

Jay Briscoe, one of the greatest tag team wrestlers of all time, has died at 38 years old.
Briscoe (real name Jamin Pugh) was killed in a car collision that took place in Laurel, Delaware on Tuesday at around 5:30 p.m. A report from the Shore News Beacon states that two people were killed in the crash and two others were transported to the hospital in critical condition. The identities of the other people involved haven’t been disclosed.

JJ Williams/Wrestling Observer

Briscoe’s death was confirmed by AEW and ROH owner Tony Khan. Khan pledged to do everything he can to support Briscoe’s family.

“Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” Khan wrote. “Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family. Rest In Peace Jamin.”

After starting his in-ring career as a teenager, Briscoe made his name in pro wrestling while teaming with his brother Mark in ROH. During the 20-plus years that they were with the promotion, the Briscoes held the ROH tag team titles 13 times. They had just won the titles at ROH Final Battle last month, defeating FTR in what was widely considered one of the best matches of 2022. It capped off a trilogy of matches between the teams that took place last year.

“I’ve been in tears since I heard the news,” FTR’s Cash Wheeler tweeted. “I just don’t have the words. Rest in Peace Jay.”

Briscoe also had success as a singles wrestler, holding the ROH world championship twice. He and Mark were the first wrestlers inducted when ROH launched its Hall of Fame in 2022.

NJPW and Impact Wrestling are among the other promotions that the Briscoes previously held tag team titles in.

“IMPACT is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jay Briscoe,” Impact Wrestling tweeted. “Jay will always be remembered as a trailblazer who, with his brother Mark, left it in the ring every night. We send our sincere condolences to his family, who he loved beyond words, as well as his friends and fans.”

Ring of Honor wrestling star Jay Briscoe dead at 38

Jay Briscoe, one of the best professional tag-team wrestlers in the world, has died at 38 years old.

Briscoe, whose real name is Jamin Pugh, was a longtime fixture in Ring of Honor. The Briscoes — Jay, and his brother Mark — are 13-time tag-team champions of the promotion, which included a present reign.

The news was announced by AEW founder Tony Khan, who purchased Ring of Honor last March.

“Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” Khan tweeted Tuesday night. “Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family. Rest In Peace Jamin.”

Pro wrestling reporter Dave Meltzer added that Briscoe was one of two people who died in a car accident in Laurel, Del.

The Briscoes have been part of Ring of Honor since 2002. Jay Briscoe has also been their world champion twice as a singles competitor.

Tributes to Briscoe have begun pouring in.

“I’ve been in tears since I heard the news. I just don’t have the words. Rest in Peace Jay,” tweeted Cash Wheeler, of the tag-team FTR. The teams wrestled a trilogy of the matches, with the most recent coming in December.

Added the pro wrestler Danhausen: “One of the top highlights of my short ROH run and career was being able to not only work with the Briscoes, but having the absolute privilege to wrestle Mark and Jay. One of the best wrestlers to ever do it and always so nice and helpful to everyone. Rest in peace.”

“Jay Briscoe was one of the toughest men I ever had the privilege of sharing a ring with, as well as being a tremendous brother, father, and man,” AEW’s Christopher Daniels tweeted. “I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to know him and wrestle him as often as I did. Rest in Peace, Jay, I love you.”

He informed the publication that, ‘She’s bringing exactly what she brought to the first one, which was incredible, but in greater abundance.’

‘And she’s really become a sister. I’m so grateful to count her as a partner and a sister and a friend, and also to share stories about how amazing it is to work with Luca, because we worked with him back to back on wildly different projects.’

Back in September, Timothée opened up about ‘transitioning to an adult mindset’ as his career skyrockets, admitting that he’s an old soul.

Co-star: Timothee recently opened up to Variety abut his Dune co-stars, including Zendaya, who is stepping into the role of Chani once again in the sequel

Chatting to Vogue, the actor explained how the Covid-19 pandemic shifted his mindset, sharing: ‘I should have been trying to get my adult feet under myself a little bit earlier than I did.

‘I found myself having to really, you know, be honest with myself that where I’ve been able to get myself to in life was balls to the wall, like throwing everything at [it] at a young age that, by some miracle, got me to where I am. But to then transition to an adulting mindset.’

Continuing that he feels as though his mindset is that of an ‘old man’, the movie star explained: ‘The ways I feel older than 26 I have always felt. It’s not like I feel like I’ve had some mental breakthrough that has given me perspective. The perspective that feels ‘old man’, I feel like I was born with it.’

Steelers honor Franco Harris by rallying past Raiders

PITTSBURGH — Mike Tomlin wasn’t ready to go there, with all due respect.

Yes, the Pittsburgh Steelers coach understands the symmetry between the 13-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night and a playoff victory over the same franchise 50 years ago, the one that ended with Steelers running back Franco Harris snagging a deflected pass and sprinting into NFL lore with what’s universally known as “The Immaculate Reception.”

Like that game five decades and one day ago, a rookie scored the winning touchdown, this time wide receiver George Pickens on a 14-yard dart from Kenny Pickett with 46 seconds remaining.

Yet the similarities end there. Harris’ play was voted the most famous in NFL history during the league’s 100th anniversary season in 2020 and helped launch a dynasty.

What happened at frigid Acrisure Stadium on Christmas Eve of 2022 was not that.

“I’m not going to try to put it in that neighborhood,” Tomlin said with a laugh. “Not even in that city.”

Still, Tomlin can appreciate that Pickett, Pickens and the rest of Pittsburgh’s still incredibly young offense etched what he called a “small place in Steelers lore” by putting together an impressive late drive that kept Pittsburgh’s slim playoff hopes alive while simultaneously paying tribute to Harris.

The Hall of Fame running back died Wednesday, two days before the golden anniversary of his defining play and three days before the franchise retired his No. 32. His sudden passing turned what was supposed to be a celebration of his career into a poignant reflection on his remarkable life.

The current Steelers — all of whom were born after Harris retired in 1984 — did their best to pay tribute. Tight end Pat Freiermuth, a Penn State graduate like Harris, suggested to Tomlin during the week that the entire team show up Saturday night wearing replicas of Harris’ jersey.

Defensive end and co-captain Cam Heyward ran onto the field waving a massive flag with Harris’ number on it. Pickett made a dummy “Franco! Franco” call during his cadence before sneaking for a first down.

During halftime, Harris’ widow, Dana Dokmanovich, and their son, Dok, joined team president Art Rooney II for a tearful ceremony that included Dokmanovich leaning into Rooney for support after he presented her with her late husband’s jersey.

“We dedicated this to Franco,” Pickett said. “Felt like he was with us tonight.”

Pickett completed 26 of 39 passes for 244 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Freiermuth caught seven passes for 66 yards and Najee Harris had 95 total yards as the Steelers (7-8) won for the fifth time in seven games.

“We’re still in the hunt,” Heyward said. “I like to think we just keep getting better and better as the weeks go on.”

Derek Carr threw for 174 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions, the last one a floater down the middle of the field that was picked off by Cam Sutton with 29 seconds to go. Pittsburgh rookie Connor Heyward ran for a first down to help the Steelers run out of the clock.

The Raiders (6-9), coming off a dramatic last-play victory over New England last week, reverted to their form from earlier this season by losing their eighth one-score game of the year. They could be eliminated from the playoffs by the end of the week.

“We’ve pulled out plenty [of games] and then to lose in this fashion when you have a shot to win, you realize you’re close but close doesn’t really count in this league,” Las Vegas head coach Josh McDaniels said. “I obviously have to do a better job to try and close the gap.”

It was a gap the Raiders found themselves on the right side of for the first 59-plus minutes at the second-coldest home game in Steelers’ history.

Carr started crisply in the 8-degree (minus-13 Celsius) weather — the coldest home game for the Steelers since 1989 — and finished off a 14-play, 71-yard opening drive with a 14-yard touchdown strike to Hunter Renfrow.

Yet Las Vegas let the Steelers hang around, and Pickett — whose name was announced by Harris when Pittsburgh took him with the 20th overall pick in the 2022 draft — provided the first signature moment of what the Steelers hope will be a decorated career.

“I can’t say enough about [our young offensive players], all of them,” Tomlin said. “They showed poised and resolve and made the necessary plays. We move forward with a really good Christmas.”

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
