Intruder shot at NC rapper DaBaby’s home after trespassing, 911 calls say :: WRAL.com

— 911 calls released in a shooting that happened at North Carolina rapper DaBaby’s home near Charlotte Wednesday night show that a person was shot for trespassing.

Police have not accused DaBaby, whose real name is Jonathan Kirk, of the shooting. Authorities did confirm that Kirk was home at the time of the shooting.

The gunman called 911 to say that he shot an intruder on Wednesday night.

“I shot him in his leg,” the 911 caller said. “He was trespassing on my property.”

Officers found the victim at Kirk’s home and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police said the person who was shot is not from the area and was not a guest at the property.

“Just like any other property owner, they’re entitled to their right to secure their property and make sure nobody comes in,” according to Troutman Police Chief Josh Watson.

911 calls released to WCNC were redacted and the voice of the caller was altered.

The home, which is in the small town of Troutman just north of Charlotte, is surrounded by a tall concrete wall and security gate. Signs displaying “No Trespassing” and “We have guns and shovels” are posted around the property.

DaBaby recently made headlines after making disparaging comments about gay men and HIV during a performance at a Miami music festival. He is also known for beefing with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 2019 after being detained on minor drug charges.

The shooting was reported at the couple’s home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday. Avant was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she died. Clarence Avant and a security guard were also on the property at the time of the shooting but were not hurt.

“That’s good. We are happy that the police are doing something,” said Yafa Cohan, a neighbor.

Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor, whose vehicle was spotted on several surveillance videos driving eastbound out of the city shortly after the shooting that killed Avant.

LAPD’s Hollywood Division officers were alerted to a shooting and burglary call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive at about 3:30 a.m., where Maynor was found in the backyard of the home, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the foot.

It was an “astute watch commander at Hollywood that, starting to put two and two together, and reached out to Beverly Hills,” according to LAPD Deputy Chief Blake Chow. Similarities between the two break-ins prompted Beverly Hills detectives to come out to Hollywood to investigate further.

With the arrest, police say they believe there is no further threat to the public, but the investigation is ongoing.

“At this time, we’re only looking at him as a suspect, but again, there’s a lot of evidence to go through, so we’re leaving open the possibility there could be other people involved,” Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook described Maynor as a parolee with an extensive criminal history. According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, he was most recently released to parole supervision on Sept. 1 after serving four years for second-degree robbery. He has previously served time for a separate robbery conviction and grand theft.

Maynor was arrested by the LAPD and taken to a local hospital. Evidence connecting Maynor to the fatal shooting of Avant, including an AR-15 rifle, was collected by Beverly Hills police detectives, who have since taken over both burglary investigations. Beverly Hills police say he will be booked into jail when medically cleared by doctors.

Clarence Avant: Suspect arrested after famed music executive’s wife Jacqueline Avant killed in Beverly Hills shooting

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (KABC) — A parolee with an extensive criminal record was arrested for a Beverly Hills home invasion and shooting that resulted in the death of Jacqueline Avant, wife of a famed music executive, police announced Thursday.
The Beverly Hills Police Department identified the suspect as 29-year-old Aariel Maynor of Los Angeles.

They say Maynor is a parolee with a long criminal history. He was caught after apparently accidentally shooting himself in the foot with an AR-15 while committing another break-in just an hour after allegedly killing Avant.

Beverly Hills officers were called to the Avants’ home in the 1100 block of Maytor Place around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning after a reported shooting. Officers found the 81-year-old with a gunshot wound. Avant was taken to the hospital but was later pronounced dead.

About one hour later, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood division responded to another shooting call in the 6000 block of Graciosa Drive, where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his foot.

Investigators later determined that Maynor was involved in a burglary at that home and had accidentally shot himself with an AR-15. Further investigation tied him to Avant’s death, according to a press release. The caliber of the weapon matched the bullets found at the Avant murder scene.

Beverly Hills Police Chief Mark G. Stainbrook said there were multiple surveillance videos that showed Maynor’s vehicle heading eastbound out of Beverly Hills shortly after the shooting.

Police believe Maynor acted alone and a motive remains unclear.

After the arrest was announced, the Avant and Sarandos families released a statement thanking police. (Clarence and Jackie Savant’s daughter, Nicole, is married to Ted Sarandos, the co-CEO of Netflix.)

“Our deepest gratitude to The City of Beverly Hills, the BHPD and all law enforcement for their diligence on this matter,” the statement read. “Now, let justice be served.”

Avant, known affectionately as “Jackie,” was well-known and well-respected for her philanthropy over the years.

Her husband, Clarence Avant, was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He was also the subject of a 2019 Netflix documentary “The Black Godfather,” which highlighted his influence in the music industry.

Stainbrook confirmed there was a private security guard on the property at the time, but it was not clear how that individual may have interacted with the suspect.

On Wednesday, Stainbrook read a statement from the Avant family:
“The entire Avant family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love, support and condolences for Jacqueline Avant. Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills, who has made an immeasurable positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends and all of the people she has held throughout her amazing life.”

Beverly Hills police say a shooting at the 1100 block of Maytor Place was called in at 2:23 a.m. Wednesday. When officers arrived, they found a woman with a gunshot wound, and there were no suspects at the scene.

The woman was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, but did not survive. At an afternoon news conference, Beverly Hills police Chief Mark Stainbrook confirmed the woman killed was 81-year-old Jacqueline Avant.

“The Avant family’s contributions to the world of entertainment and to better communities across Los Angeles are unmatched,” Stainbrook said. He said the department is in contact with the family and offering their support and resources.

Avant was the wife of 90-year-old music executive Clarence Avant and mother-in-law of Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Clarence Avant, who was not injured in the shooting, is known as the “Godfather of Black Music” who worked with the likes of Louis Armstrong, the SOS Band, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Babyface.

Clarence Avant and a security guard were present at the time of the shooting, but they were not hurt, Stainbrook said.

Stainbrook said he was asked to thank everyone for their messages of support and condolences on behalf of the Avant family.

“Jacqueline was an amazing woman, wife, mother, philanthropist, and a 55-year resident of Beverly Hills who has made an immeasurable, positive contribution and impact on the arts community. She will be missed by her family, friends, and all of the people she has helped throughout her amazing life,” Stainbrook read from the Avant family’s statement.

The Avants were married for 54 years. Danny Bakewell Sr., who is the owner of the Black newspaper the Los Angeles Sentinel,  says he is a lifelong friend of the Avant family and was “overwhelmingly pained” at the loss of such a beautiful person.

“For her to be killed in such a senseless way is unfathomable. There are no human beings more kind and generous than Clarence and Jackie, and for their home and their lives to be violated in such a violent manner is unconscionable,” he said in a statement.

Homicide investigators are at the home, which is located in the Hollywood Hills, between Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon Boulevards.

“I cannot believe this is happening to our neighborhood,” Vida Ardebichi, a neighbor who said she’d often see the 81-year-old Avant out walking, said.

While investigators are done processing the scene, the investigation is far from over. Authorities did say it’s too early to determine a motive in this shooting. But in recent weeks, there has been increase in follow-home robberies, that have prompted the LAPD to issue an alert last month. A number have involved celebrities, including TV personality Terrence J and “Real Housewife” Dorit Kemsley.
