Five-star DL David Hicks Jr. makes shocking commitment to Texas A&M

KATY, Texas — In a commitment that caught recruiting fans and analysts off guard, Katy (Texas) Paetow five-star defensive lineman David Hicks Jr. announced his commitment to Texas A&M over Oklahoma on Wednesday afternoon in a ceremony at his high school.

Conversations were had with both coaching staffs in the waning hours, but his discussion with Texas A&M was the one that was good enough to put the Aggies over the edge.

“They were just telling me that I was a priority and how the depth chart looks,” Hicks said. “Just showing me how they’ll use me and how they need me there.”

His relationship with defensive line coach Elijah Robinson is one that stretches back to his time in middle school, and it was a big reason why he will take his talents to College Station.

“Me and Coach E are really close,” he said. “I always went back and visited on June 1 as soon as the dead period was over. Me and him have a really good relationship, it’s like an uncle and nephew.”

That early relationship also helped Texas A&M see Hicks develop as a person and as a player throughout his time in high school.

“It was really important because I’m really big on relationships,” he said. “I’ve been tight with them since eighth grade so they’ve seen me develop into the player that I am now.”

Defensive analyst Tony Jerod-Eddie and defensive ends coach Terry Price also played a big role as they continue the family atmosphere that was built with Hicks and his family.

“Coach E, Coach Tony and Coach Price are really great coaches,” he said. “I feel like they can develop me in all aspects of life, even as a man. They’re right down the street from the house. I’ll be able to stay close to home and close to my city.”

The element of surprise was possibly the hardest thing for Hicks during his recruitment, as he felt a lot of people expected him to be a Sooner all the way up until his announcement.

“I got predicted to Oklahoma and I didn’t want to get predicted again, so I just tried to keep it quiet,” he said.

Looking back, Hicks is grateful for his journey up to this point and is looking forward to what he can do in College Station.

“It was a really fun ride, this whole recruiting process,” he said. “I remember getting my first FBS offer from SMU. I remember being in camps in eighth grade and those were moments that really started everything. I’m just glad I am where I am now.”

At 6-foot-4, 255 pounds, Hicks is the No. 13 ranked recruit in the country for the class of 2023, according to Rivals. He is the No. 1 strongside defensive end in the country and the No. 3 recruit from the state of Texas.

Yankees win 4-0 thanks to dominant pitching and a clutch Aaron Hicks

Josh made the point earlier today that there’s simply not enough ways to describe how great the Yankees have been this year. There would be no jinxing today, as the Yankees went out and did what they’ve done all year — dominate as a pitching staff and find the timely hits.

It was a tall order to secure the series win today, even with Jameson Taillon on the mound, thanks to the Blue Jays sending out Alek Manoah. The Yankees have struggled to figure out the blue chip pitcher that has blossomed in his second year in the big leagues, but they managed to do it today. Manoah cruised through the first three innings, but Anthony Rizzo started a one-out rally with a walk in the fourth. Gleyber Torres singled out to center field to advance Rizzo, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa beat out a two-out infield single to load the bases.

That brought up Aaron Hicks, who has struggled mightily all year long. The Yankee lineup was without several starters including Giancarlo Stanton, DJ LeMahieu, and Josh Donaldson, so someone was going to have to step up to keep the offense rolling today. The snake-bitten outfielder turned his fortune around for an afternoon with a double down the right field line that cleared the bases — his first extra-base hit with the bases loaded since 2017 — giving the Yankees a lead that they would never surrender.

On the other side of the ball Taillon set out to win the pitching duel that was lined up, and he delivered. Taillon turned away the Blue Jays at every opportunity — whether it was a leadoff walk to George Springer to start the game or a leadoff double to Ramiel Tapia to start the fifth inning, they couldn’t follow up with any consistency against Taillon. Their best chance came in the sixth inning, when a Springer walk and a Bo Bichette single gave the Jays runners on first and second with no-one out. Taillon answered back by getting Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to fly out meekly to left and keeping Alejandro Kirk’s flyball to center in the park. Taillon turned the ball over to Michael King, who froze Teoscar Hernandez with a 98-mph fastball to end the threat.

The top half of the sixth gave the Yankees a chance to pad their lead, when Gleyber Torres hit a ball deep to center that Tapia trapped against the wall, but was initially ruled as an out. The Yankees challenged it and got the overturned call, and then after Joey Gallo moved the runner over on a fly ball Kiner-Falefa slapped a double while nearly falling over in the batter’s box to score the run.

From there, the two best relievers in baseball closed the door on Toronto. King stayed out for the seventh inning and worked around a one-out single from Matt Chapman, and then struck out two batters in the eighth before turning things over to Clay Holmes. Holmes stranded Springer, who had walked for the third time in the game earlier, by getting Kirk to ground out to third, and then sat the Jays down in order in the ninth. Holmes has now broken Mariano Rivera’s franchise records for consecutive scoreless innings and scoreless appearances, a feat that seems unthinkable but fits right in with the rest of the dominating performances that this team has put together.

The Yankees have now won nine straight games, and 16 of their last 17 — any way you look at it, this is the hottest team in baseball and the best team in baseball. They hold a 12-game lead in the AL East and can expand it with a series sweep tomorrow afternoon with Luis Severino set to get back on the mound after his start got skipped due to sickness. Yusei Kikuchi will be tasked with matching him, and that game will get underway at 1:37 p.m. EST.

Yankees 10, Twins 7: Hicks, Gallo lift up Cole in comeback win

You can’t win a World Series in June. This season’s champion will be determined like all others, by way of a small-sample October tournament. Games played today can only mean so much in determining who goes home with the trophy.

But one can demonstrate true championship-mettle on any day. That’s what the Yankees did in Minnesota, in picking up their ace on a night when he imploded, and finding a way to win a game that looked lost. No, the Yankees didn’t much increase their odds of winning the World Series. They merely looked like the best team in baseball in storming back to beat the Twins, 10-7.

For all the fireworks that would follow, though, this game started with a cute manufactured run. Aaron Judge worked a one-out walk in the first, and then played some hit-and-run, reaching third on an Anthony Rizzo single. Judge was plated when Josh Donaldson lofted a sac fly to right for a 1-0 lead.

The early lead would be short lived, as Gerrit Cole’s night quickly went to hell. Luis Arraez led off the home half with a shocking solo shot, just his second dinger of the year. Byron Buxton made it back-to-back jacks, taking a cement-mixer from Cole deep out to left. Not to be outdone, Carlos Correa followed with a screaming line drive homer. Three consecutive home runs surrendered by the Yankees’ horse to lead off the game.

There were no excuses to be made for Cole in that inning, with the three hitters taking out three different pitches, a changeup, slider, and cutter in that order, that all were dead-red middle-middle. There’s certainly some bad fortune involved here; you don’t imagine every errant pitch will be punished with a home run. But Cole’s command was clearly off right from the word Go, and the Twins hurt him immediately.

The Yankees had a counterpunch after that flurry from Minnesota, with Joey Gallo tying the game at three with a high-arching two-run homer:

Yet the Twins kept landing body shots on Cole. A single and a walk put two on for Buxton in the second, Cole left another pitch middle-middle, and the result was a crushing three-run bomb.

The story repeats once more in the third. Cole threw a four-seamer right down Broadway to Trevor Larnach, one the lefty-swinger deposited in the seats 441 feet away. Gio Urshela followed up with a double to end Cole’s miserable night after 2.1 innings, eight hits, and seven runs home.

You can tell the story of this outing from Cole with one chart:

Those are all five of the homers Cole allowed, each pitch representing a failure of execution. Each was a miss, and a bad one. But again, it’s odd for a pitcher with stuff as good as Cole to be penalized with a homer every time he errs. For example, since 2020, 97+ mph fastballs in the middle-middle section of the zone have been put in play 1727 times. Those batted balls resulted in a .337 wOBA; not a 1.000 wOBA. Here, we have an example of a great player making a chunk of ugly mistakes, and paying the maximum amount possible for every one of them.

Lucas Luetge came on for Cole and did a nice job settling things down. He recorded seven outs, allowing one hit and no runs, steadying the game and working into the fifth. Luetge gave the Yankees a chance to get back into contact with Minnesota.

They did just that thanks to a pair of back-to-back homers of their own. In the top of the fifth, Gallo roped his second of the game, and DJ LeMahieu followed with a solo shot of his own, bringing the score to 7-5.

And in the next inning, perhaps the most surprising thing on a night full of shockers came to pass:

Aaron Hicks slammed just his third extra-base hit of the year, and it was a doozy, a majestic fly down the right-field line, tying the game at seven. Playing in Minnesota just seems to bring the highlights out of Hicks.

The Yankees were dissatisfied with a tie, and surged right back in front in the seventh. Judge opened with a double off the top of the wall, and Rizzo drove him in with a single for an 8-7 advantage. Three batters later, Hicks stayed hot with an RBI single to drive in Josh Donaldson and pad the lead.

All the while, the Yankee staff continued to stand on its head in lifting up their ace. Miguel Castro came after Luetge and did his part, working 1.1 scoreless to take the Yankees through six. Wandy Peralta kept the Twins off balance in the seventh, and Michael King turned in a sharp performance in the eighth. King took the mound with a 10-7 advantage, as 2021’s MVP, wild pitch with a runner on third, appeared in the top of the frame, chasing Rizzo home.

Clay Holmes, currently the game’s premier reliever, made short work of the top of Minnesota’s lineup for his ninth save of the year, and one of the best wins of 2022 was in the books. Early on, the Yankees looked headed to a series loss, one that would have sent them home with a small losing streak and some concern about a rotation that has finally looked mortal this week. Instead, they’ll ride high, the good times still rolling in spite of a couple of rough outing from their top starters.

They’ll look to keep the momentum going tomorrow night against the Cubs with Luis Severino on the bump. That one goes off at 7:05 pm. See you then.

Florida Burger King employee Shateasha Hicks shoots customer who threw mayo at her

A Burger King employee in Florida allegedly shot a customer after he threw mayonnaise at her face, police and local reports said.

Shateasha Hicks, 30, was arrested Thursday and charged with discharging a firearm in public after the incident at the Miami Gardens fast-food joint.

Police said Hicks opened fire on a man after an argument at the drive-thru window.

A relative of Hicks told NBC 6 that the customer she shot had squirted or thrown mayonnaise in her face.

The customer drove off and parked in the Burger King lot, according to a witness.

Hicks then allegedly went to her car, grabbed a gun and squeezed off five shots at the person’s vehicle as they drove away, according to an arrest report obtained by the outlet.

She got into her car and fled the scene, but was arrested after cops spotted her vehicle about a mile from her home, the report said.

Miami-Dade Corrections

A gun was found on the floorboard of Hicks’ car, and investigators recovered five bullet casings in the Burger King parking lot, according to the report.

Hicks walked out of Miami-Dade County jail on Friday evening after making her $1,000 bond.

It’s not clear if the customer, who hasn’t been tracked down by authorities, was injured in the shooting.

Hicks’ aunt claimed her niece was defending herself.

“She was protecting herself. I don’t blame her. Everybody else might, but I don’t,” she told Local10.

A witness who identified himself as Kevin told the outlet that he was purchasing a burger at the time of the shooting — and saw the victim “making faces” at Hicks.

“He was making faces at her through the car window, out here in the road, and that’s when he pulled in here and that just set her off,” he said.

The employee’s aunt claimed her niece was defending herself.

A Burger King spokesperson called the incident “unacceptable.”

“We are horrified to learn of the events that unfolded at this location. This unacceptable behavior does not align with our brand values of safety and security,” the spokesperson said. “Our franchisee is cooperating with local authorities. As this remains an ongoing investigation, we aren’t able to share additional details at this time.”

Akiem Hicks could be on the trade block

Earlier today news broke that the Chicago Bears offered the Seattle Seahawks three first-round picks, a third-round pick, plus two unknown veteran players for Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson. Seattle of course turned the Bears down, for now, and they went on to sign quarterback Andy Dalton. CBS Sports’ Jason La Confora — I know, I know, his track record on Bears news is sketchy at best — reported that Bears GM Ryan Pace actually offered the Seahawks several veteran players to choose from, including starters Akiem Hicks and Khalil Mack.

The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs is reporting that Seattle isn’t the only team that may have talked with the Bears about a trade for Hicks, saying that there are “rumblings” around the league that Hicks is available.

Trading the 31-year old Hicks would create a big hole in the Bears defense, but it would also create $10.5 million in cap space for 2021.

The Bears did sign defensive lineman Angelo Blackson on Wednesday night to fortify their depth at the position, but he’s not going to be able to replicate Hicks’ status on the defense.
