‘Succession’ Takes Us Inside Kendall’s Disastrous, Cocaine-Fueled 40th Birthday Bash

When Manhattan’s new Hudson Yards development finally touched the sky in 2019, The New Yorker commemorated its completion with a review. Writer Alexandra Schwartz leveled the place with one withering compliment: “It would be a great setting for a breakdown.” How fitting, then, that on Sunday night’s Succession, the $25 billion monument to commerce also became the venue for Kendall Roy’s 40th birthday party.

You can smell the disaster coming from the moment we open on Kendall’s preparations for the night. His warbling rendition of Billy Joel’s “Honesty” would be too on the nose if that weren’t exactly the point: He’s rehearsing a song about longing for emotional candor before a roomful of hired hands who know their only real job is to say “yes” to everything he says.

Before we witness Kendall’s unraveling, however, Waystar Royco receives some good news (for most people). The Department of Justice investigation has progressed, and it looks like no one’s headed to jail. Logan assures his son-in-law that he’ll “remember” that he offered to take the fall for the company; Shiv, meanwhile, seems just a little too unsettled by her husband’s lucky break.

That’s just as well, because Tom doesn’t seem interested in celebrating with Shiv anyway—he’d much rather run and tell Greg.

Tom and Greg’s dynamic has been fascinating from the beginning, but recently the tension between them—at least from Tom’s end—has become a little more… explicit. (Example: Remember that time Tom told his lunk of a colleague, “I’d castrate and marry you in a second?”) Tom is in utter ecstasy as he tells Greg the good news, jumping on filing cabinets and overturning Greg’s. “The Waystar Two are free,” he whispers before kissing Greg on the forehead. Hmmm…

But more on that later—time for some Important Business. Namely, Waystar’s attempt to acquire a content platform called GoJo to save the company from becoming a media dinosaur. Logan is furious when tech mogul and GoJo boss Lukas Mattson (Alexander Skarsgård) stands him up, and to Shiv’s horror he almost listens to his assistant (whom he’s also sleeping with) over her counsel.

In the end, Daddy Roy sends Shiv and Roman to Kendall’s birthday party to track down Mattson, land a deal, and save the day.

Which brings us back to Kendallfest 2021—a sci-fi tinged Hieronymus Bosch painting staged at Hudson Yards with inflatables, an open bar, and a drug dealer. The working theme, as of last week’s episode, was End Times: Weimar Meets Carthage, Meets Dante, Meets AI and Antibiotic-Resistant Superbugs. (Apt enough, given that Hudson Yards’ most instantly recognizable building has earned the nickname “The Roach.”)

The birthday vibes are somewhere between a Brooklyn art installation and a launch party. The words “The Notorious Ken Ready to Die” hang over the entrance to the party—a glowing inflatable replica of a vaginal canal. There’s a phone check at the door with those little annoying pouches to ensure all the guests are “present.” Strangers and business contacts mill around in a dizzying swirl of neon light and evening-wear. There’s a roomful of six-foot tabloid covers with headlines like “Roman stars in Failed Sibling Dies in Tragic Jerk-Off Accident,” and “Wife of Tom Wambsgans Arrested in Sweep of City Street Walkers.”

When Kendall spots Shiv and Roman, his sister tells him she couldn’t find a card “that says both happy birthday and get well soon.” But Kendall does get one token—an envelope that Logan asked Roman to deliver.

Once alone, Kendall opens the letter from his father. There’s a card with the words “Happy Birthday” crossed out and replaced with a scrawled “cash out and fuck off.” And there’s a $2 billion offer to buy him out of Waystar Royco.

Kendall has spent the season trying to write his triumphant ending, but defying his family has revealed just how deep the Roy blood runs in Kendall’s veins. Waystar Royco is an extension of his father, and he still can’t decide if he wants to conquer it for himself or kill it. Even with $2 billion on the table, he can’t leave this rotten mess behind.

As theatrical as Kendall’s mental instability might be in this episode, none of the Roys are really okay. Roman spends Kendall’s birthday behaving like his most impish self, and Shiv—enraged by the realization that her brother and father conspired to buy Kendall out without consulting her—takes to the dance floor to upstage Elaine Benes as the wildest dancer in TV history. And when Kendall finds out his siblings only attended his party to broker a deal to acquire GoJo, it’s time for a humiliating showdown outside a grown man’s indoor treehouse.

As theatrical as Kendall’s mental instability might be in this episode, none of the Roys are really okay.

It’s when Kendall runs into Rava, however, that he finally combusts. His ex-wife refuses to engage in his casually cruel digs at her and her new boyfriend, and instead asks whether he received the birthday present their children made him.

Faced with the realization that his kids’ gift is missing, Kendall begins hurling insults and demands left and right. “Trace that gift!” Are the DJs sticking with his approved “all bangers, all the time” playlist? Can we get Connor to take off his coat? “He’s souring the vibe.”

The whole spectacle, Kendall finally realizes, looks like an asshole’s party—“and my thing from the first meeting was that it shouldn’t feel like an asshole’s party.” His confidence crumbles and he cancels the performance in which he would have sung “Honesty” while hanging from a cross—as well as the introductory speech in which he would have told his guests, “This is a culmination of my life’s journey, being crucified to save you fucking morons.”

Naomi tries to comfort her rapidly disintegrating boyfriend as he turns his gift room upside down looking for his kids’ present. She offers him her gift as a distraction. But in the moment when all the loneliest Roy craves is true connection, he instead receives the most impersonal gift possible: a watch. The same gift his brother-in-law once gave his father. It’s not even inscribed.

When Kendall begins to say “I wish I was…” and doesn’t finish, he assures Naomi he just wishes he were home—but one gets the impression that’s not what he originally meant. It is, however, time for the birthday boy to go home.

As bad as Kendall’s night might be, Tom’s isn’t looking much better. Maybe it was the moment Greg revealed he’d asked out Kendall’s assistant Comfry. As Greg and Tom wander through a floral canopy, it’s hard not to catch a whiff of romance; is Mr. Darcy, perhaps, longing for a dance partner he can’t have? When he tells Greg, “I took the wrong drugs in the wrong order, and I can’t get happy,” it doesn‘t seem like he’s actually talking about drugs—or the party.

The only person having fun is Roman—who manages to talk himself into Kendall’s precious treehouse and lands the deal with Mattson. All it takes is a little charm, a promise to keep Logan off his back, and a little moment in which Mattson peed on a phone. (“I can’t piss near other men due to… we don’t know what reason,” Roman says. “But go ahead, enjoy.”)

High on the serotonin boost of success—and probably a pharmacy’s worth of drugs—Roman tortures Shiv, throwing his win and their father’s confidence in her face. He also asks how upset she is at the prospect of having to keep waking up next to Tom, which Shiv returns with yet another dig about his “sex thing.”

“You thought it was ladies’ night and they were playing your song,” Roman tells his sister, “but guess what? You’re wrong. All the men got together in the Man Club and we decided, sweetheart, everything’s fine, so just shh.

And when Kendall tries to boot his siblings out of his party while staging his own quiet exit, things only get worse. Roman, convinced his siblings “can’t fucking bear to see me win,” goads his brother to hit him before shoving Kendall himself. In a scene that could have been ripped from a middle school nightmare, Kendall—exhausted and high out of his mind—falls flat on his face and shuffles out of the room, broken with shame.

No one’s coming out of this party looking great. Tom is going to be “out for a while” doing who knows what while Shiv sulks at home. Roman is embarrassingly excited to tell Daddy about his big win: “I’m the only child you’ll ever need,” he says with humor that might just mask a thinly-veiled desire. “You can kill the others!” And Kendall, after all that preparation, finishes his birthday on a balcony alone, staring down on the endless gray of Hudson Yards—and that hideous, billion-dollar roach building.

Birds of Prey’s Broadcast Cable Version Was ‘Mistakenly Added’ to HBO Max and the Unedited Version Will Return

Update (11/26/21) – A Warner Bros. spokesperson has confirmed that the broadcast cable version of Birds of Prey was “mistakenly added to the service,” and that “the unedited original version will be available on HBO Max instead.”

The original story follows.

The HBO Max version of Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has apparently been censored from the original version that was found on the streamer and in theaters.

As reported by ComicBook.com, HBO Max subscribers that start the DC film are greeted with a message saying, “This film has been modified as follows from its original version: it has been edited for content.”

Birds of Prey is rated R and features language and violence throughout the film. As ComicBook.com notes, “one scene featuring Rosie Perez’s Detective Montoya sees a phrase on her shirt being clearly edited, confirming the censoring of the outing.” The movie that stars both Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor now boasts a TV-14 rating.

ComicBook.com also writes that this wasn’t the first time a streamer has offered a “tamer version of the film,” as Netflix had the TV edit of Back to the Future II for a while before it was corrected.

“The blame is on Universal who somehow furnished Netflix an edited version of the movie,” writer Bob Gale told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “I learned about it some 10 days ago from an eagle-eyed fan, and had the studio rectify the error. The version now running is the uncensored, unedited, original version.”

Birds of Prey: Comparing the Characters’ Looks Through the Years

Whether this was a mistake or otherwise remains to be seen, but we will update this story if the original version is restored.

Birds of Prey being brought down to TV-14 is somewhat of a big deal as it was the first DCEU title to be rated R beside the “Ultimate Edition” of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Following Birds of Prey, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and The Suicide Squad both also earned an R rating.

Roku promises to fix issues with HBO, Netflix, and more caused by 10.5 update

Roku says it’s working to fix issues that users have been reporting following its 10.5 software update. TechCrunch reported the problems earlier on Monday, citing posts on Reddit and Roku forums where users said that apps like HBO Max, ESPN, Disney Plus, and more wouldn’t allow them to watch any video content after updating the OS on their smart TVs.

According to Roku, “certain older Roku TV models or older Roku Ultra players” are affected by the problematic update. In a post on its forum, the company instructs users with Roku Ultra models 4660, 4661, 4662, or 4670, and users with a Roku TV model 7XXX to manually check for a software update, and tells owners of other devices to subscribe to the thread for future details.

TechCrunch says Roku has been having users roll back their OS to a previous version on a case-by-case basis, after the user contacts support with information about their devices. While at least one Reddit user has reported seeing a prompt to “upgrade” from 10.5 to 10.0, Roku doesn’t mention that it’ll be widely offering a downgrade in its posts on Twitter or its forums.

While Roku users have also reported issues with streaming using the YouTube TV app, that particular issue doesn’t appear to be limited to just one platform — Android Police reports that YouTube TV users have been having issues across almost every device, from streaming boxes like Apple TVs, Amazon Fire sticks, and even Google’s own Chromecasts, to consoles and smart TVs (though it notes that iOS and Android users seem unaffected). YouTube’s support team initially said that it was working on a fix for the issue on Roku devices, but later said that the company was looking into the issue on other devices as well.

While it’s certainly odd that the two issues appear to be happening at the same time, they don’t seem to be related given that YouTube TV users are seeing freezes regardless of device. Thankfully, both companies appear to be working on ironing out the problems. Roku is actively updating its support post with instructions to check for updates, and Android Police notes that YouTube TV is getting fewer outage reports on DownDetector.com.

While the fix for Roku users may solve their problems with Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming services, their YouTube TV troubles may not be over — Roku and Google are actively feuding over the YouTube TV not being available on the platform’s store, and Google has threatened to stop distributing its regular YouTube app on Rokus as well come December.

HBO releases trailer for How To With John Wilson season two

John Wilson and his eye for finding New York City’s most eccentric and inexplicable inhabitants is back. Some thought his acclaimed HBO series How To With John Wilson couldn’t survive the pandemic. Well, if the new trailer for season two proves anything, it’s that the city that never sleeps could use a nap because things in the Big Apple are weirder than ever.

How To’s premise is simple. Wilson picks a theme and explores it through a seemingly disparate montage of footage from the streets of New York and interviews with people he meets along the way. This season, Wilson, along with his writing staff that includes gonzo comedian Connor O’Malley and Orchid Thief author Susan Orlean, explores such topics as investing, wine appreciation, and remembering dreams. So, yeah, the show has breadth.

The new trailer delivers what you’d expect from Wilson, with his hard-to-believe man-on-the-street recordings mixed with his patented folksy and funny narration. This is slow TV in the vein of Joe Pera Talks With You. So it only makes sense that the show comes from the current king of deadpan Nathan Fielder, the business expert who got really good grades in college behind Nathan For You.

Of course, the pandemic made Wilson’s production style a bit complicated. However, based on the new preview, there’s been no shortage of New York oddballs to film, albeit they now wear masks out of precaution rather than for fun.

Wilson’s sharp eye for finding the New York City that many believe doesn’t exist anymore has made him a cult hero and critical darling. For The A.V. Club, Allison Shoemaker wrote of How To With John Wilson:

It’s not often that a viewer comes across a TV series that feels completely and utterly itself. When you do—and it’s a good series, to boot—it feels like a gift[…]He’s here to show you the world and give advice about small talk, scaffolding, furniture covering, splitting the check, and so on, but that’s always just the starting point. Each episode (particularly the sensational finale, airing in two weeks) is on its own one of the year’s most satisfying surprises; together, they’re close to unbeatable”

How To With John Wilson premieres on HBO on November 26.

12 Scary Horror Movies to Stream for Halloween 2021 and Where to Watch

So… hungry…
Image: Focus World

Where can I watch Raw?

(Watch on Netflix) When Julia Ducournau won the prestigious Palme d’Or for Titane at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, nobody who’d seen her tremendous 2021 directorial debut Raw was one bit surprised. As this coming-of-age tale begins, a veterinary student (Garance Marillier) who’s a committed vegetarian is forced—by her older sister, a second-year student—to eat a rabbit kidney as part of a hazing ritual. Soon after, it awakens new cravings for meat… specifically human flesh. That sounds lurid and trashy and while Raw is definitely a cannibal movie (with the repulsive visuals to match), it might be the most emotionally nuanced cannibal movie on record. Maybe finish up your candy stash before you watch it though.

Jon Gruden to HBO: “The truth will come out”

Getty Images

We haven’t heard much from Jon Gruden since he abruptly resigned as Raiders head coach 10 days ago. HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel has heard a little more.

Andrea Kremer, who recently profiled Raiders owner Mark Davis for the show, explains on the latest episode of the Real Sports Podcast that a producer recently cold-called Gruden.

“Maggie Burbank, who produced the story that we just did on Mark Davis, she actually called Gruden and he picked up the phone, much to I think her surprise,” Kremer said. “And he’s still in Las Vegas. . . . He says he’s letting the dust settle. He said, ‘People who know me know what I stand for for 58 years. I have a resume of 58 years.’ He said, ‘The truth will come out.’ It’s certainly cryptic.”

It remains to be seen where and how the truth will come out. As Myles Simmons and I discussed on Wednesday’s #PFTPM, litigation would be one vehicle for the truth coming out. And not litigation between Gruden and the Raiders, but litigation between Gruden and the NFL, for a legal theory such as tortious interference with business relationships.

In theory, the Raiders could join Gruden in that fight.

“Mark Davis has been severely impacted,” Kremer said. “And I’m not defending Mark Davis. I’m just pointing out a fact here. Dan Snyder continues on. The Washington Football Team continues on.”

Someone decided to pull the pin on the Gruden grenade during football season, leaking documents and forcing action in early October. It could have happened before the season. It could have happened after the season. In either of those cases, the Raiders would have been in a much better position.

WarnerMedia In Talks With David Chase About HBO Max Prequel Series – Deadline

David Chase has talked up the possibility of returning to The Sopranos universe with a sequel to The Many Saints of Newark.

The creator of the hit James Gandolfini-fronted mob drama suggested, in an interview with Deadline, that it could be another feature film with Chase and Terence Winter writing together.

Now, it’s emerged that it could possibly even end up as a TV series for HBO Max.

Ann Sarnoff, CEO, Studios and Networks, WarnerMedia, told Deadline that the company was “thrilled” with the results of The Many Saints of Newark.

“We’re talking to David about a new series, Sopranos related, on HBO Max,” she said.

Chase said that if he was to return to The Sopranos world, any such potential story would take place after the film, which is set in the late 1960s and 1970s and before the original series, which starts around 1998. “There’s only one way that I would do it, and that was if Terry [Winter] and I could write the script together. That I would do.”

Sarnoff admitted that a final decision as to whether the project becomes a series or a feature film has not been made, but a Sopranos prequel series is an intriguing possibility.

She conceded that the box office numbers for The Many Saints of Newark, which stars Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti and James Gandolfini’s son Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano, were not quite as big as the company would have liked, but pointed to the demographics of the people returning to movie theaters as one reason. She added that the film had a positive effect on the show, which launched on HBO in 1999.

“You see The Sopranos pop into the top ten of viewed series on the service and it’s given it an entirely new life,” she said. “It’s literally lifted all of The Sopranos franchise in a new way. You can’t measure just by the box office.”

Sarnoff’s comments come after Chase signed a five-year, first-look deal with WarnerMedia that covers film and TV across HBO, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Chase previously wrote and developed A Ribbon of Dreams, a six-part miniseries for HBO that told the story of the beginnings of Hollywood, following a college-educated mechanical engineer and a cowboy with a violent past, who form an unlikely producing partnership and together become pioneers and then powers for a time in motion pictures. He said that it was all lined up but HBO wanted him to shoot in Ontatio and “there was a problem with money” so Chase and the premium cable network parted ways on it.

“The thing I wrote for HBO was, it would’ve been pretty good. I may go back to that,” Chase told Deadline.

Dune Is Coming to HBO Max a Day Early

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has strenuously argued against Warner Bros./AT&T’s strategy to release Dune on streaming at the same time as it comes to theaters. “Warner Bros.’ decision means ‘Dune’ won’t have the chance to perform financially in order to be viable and piracy will ultimately triumph,” he wrote in Variety last year. “Warner Bros. might just have killed the ‘Dune’ franchise.” To which WB has seemingly responded “You don’t want your movie to come out the same day on streaming as theaters? Dune worry about it! It’ll come out the day before.” The Verge is reporting that Villeneuve’s sand worm opus will debut on the ad-free version of HBO Max Thursday, October 21.

When and how to release films digitally is becoming an extremely fraught topic for studios. Disney’s decision to release Black Widow on Disney+ along with theaters resulted in Scarlett Johansson suing the Mouse for breach of contract. And the simultaneous streaming strategy may have been part of why Christopher Nolan is taking his next picture to Universal instead of the WB. No word yet on whether Villeneuve is going to sic the Fremen on Warner Bros.

First HBO Max The Suicide Squad Peacemaker Clip Released

John Cena as the titular Peacemaker.
Screenshot: HBO Max

In HBO Max’s upcoming Peacemaker follow up to James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, a deranged sociopath who sees himself as a savior is tasked by the American government to become the sort of superhero people are meant to look up to. But if people knew what kind of person John Cena’s Peacemaker actually was, they’d want absolutely nothing to do with him, mainly because of his blood thirst, but also because he’s just kind of a dweeb.

Just weeks out from Peacemaker’s premiere on HBO Max, the studio’s just dropped the first proper clip from the show that reintroduces Peacemaker into the picture, as well as establishes what sort of dynamic he’s going to have with his various allies. In the new clip, Peacemaker pulls up to a diner ready for… action (in theory) in his full vigilante costume even though he’s only meant to be meeting up with the people he’s working with for a casual chat. To Peacemaker, it’s perfectly normal for people to drive around with bald eagles chilling in their back seats. But to Belle Reve warden John Economos (Steve Agee), NSA agent Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and Task Force X members Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) and Clemon Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji), the bird alone is a clear sign that Peacemaker’s a lunatic, and that being his colleague is going to be maddening.

Though you get a slight taste of Peacemaker’s sense of humor from the clip, it’s light in the way of the series’ plot or any glimpses of action, both of which are going to factor into how successfully the show—one of the first big episodic spinoffs from the DCEU—lands with audiences. Given Gunn’s involvement in Peacemaker and how effectively the character worked in The Suicide Squad, though, there’s a solid chance that this could be one of the more interesting new projects that kicks off the new year when Peacemaker hits HBO Max in January.
