MSNBC’s Chris Hayes frets his ‘worst fears’ have been realized since Musk acquired Twitter

In a New York Times guest essay, MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes claimed that “in under a month” all of his “worst fears have been realized” in regard to how new Twitter owner Elon Musk has run his new social media platform.

Hayes claimed that Musk “courted some of the worst trolls” on Twitter, has scared off advertisers and cut staff that handle the basic functions of the platforms.

Hayes also expressed worry that under Musk, the platform may “break down and stop working altogether.”

Hayes began his guest essay by describing Musk’s handling of Twitter as a “near-death experience,” if not the end of it entirely. He wrote, “If Twitter survives — and I fervently hope it does — its near-death experience has revealed something fundamental about our online lives: the digital spaces of civic life, the ‘public town square’ as Mr. Musk deemed Twitter, have been privatized, to our collective detriment.”

He criticized the world’s richest man for taking the company private, contrary to the wishes of its previous owner, Jack Dorsey. He said, “Before Mr. Musk bought Twitter, its co-founder and former C.E.O. Jack Dorsey said of the platform that no one should own it, that it ‘wants to be a public good at a protocol level.’”

He continued by praising Twitter prior to Musk as “an arena where something akin to the global conversation was taking place.” He added, “it came closest to executing on the core vision of what the global town square could look like.”

He continued, “That’s why there was so much apprehension when Mr. Musk bought the site: No one man should have all that power.”

Hayes then provided a blistering condemnation of Musk’s handling of the platform. He wrote, “In under a month, almost all of the worst fears have manifested.” Listing them, he said, “He has solicitously courted some of the worst trolls, sent advertisers fleeing in droves and cut the staff down so radically that simple functions like two-factor authentication have at times stopped working and there’s a risk it will simply break down and stop working altogether.”

Hayes then gave a dismissive description of why Musk bought the platform, writing, “Mr. Musk bought Twitter because he’s a Twitter addict and, more specifically, an extremely online attention addict.”

Hayes continued denigrating the billionaire, stating, “This is someone with millions of followers who is deep in the bowels of his own replies and mentions, clearly spending inordinate amounts of time looking at what people are saying about him.”

He added, “I can tell you from experience that this is a path to madness — though it’s a path that the design of Twitter and other social networks guides you gently down.”

Hayes claimed that after Musk’s purchase, “the site felt like a family saying its goodbyes to a beloved but deeply problematic uncle.” He also accused Musk of “making the most expensive impulse purchase in human history.”

“It’s fitting, in its own chaotic way,” he declared.

He concluded his essay on a negative note, “The world’s most successful capitalist, by at least one measure, has made the most definitive case for rejecting private ownership of the public sphere that we’ve seen in a very long time.” He then mocked Musk, using his own catchphrase: “Let that sink in.”

Eric McCormack, Sean Hayes, RuPaul and other celebrities react to Leslie Jordan’s death

CNN
 —

The unexpected passing of television star and social media darling Leslie Jordan has spurred a flood of heartfelt tributes.

The actor died on Monday, his talent agent Sarabeth Schedeen told CNN in a statement. He was 67.

Jordan’s most recognizable credit was his time on “Will & Grace” as Beverley Leslie, a role he reprised throughout the show’s run, including its recent reboot.

Co-star Eric McCormack posted two tributes to Jordan on his Instagram, with one showing the pair performing for the cameras on the show.

“Crushed to learn about the loss of @thelesliejordan, the funniest and flirtiest southern gent I’ve ever known,” McCormack wrote in the caption. “The joy and laughter he brought to every one of his #WillandGrace episodes was palpable. Gone about 30 years too soon. You were loved sweet man.”

Sean Hayes, who played Jack on the NBC sitcom, also shared a photo, calling Jordan “one of the funniest people I ever had the pleasure of working with.”

“Everyone who ever met him, loved him. There will never be anyone like him,” he wrote. “A unique talent with an enormous, caring heart. Leslie, you will be missed, my dear friend.”

Debra Messing, who played Grace on the show, addressed Jordan directly in her tribute, saying “the joy & delight you have brought into my life has been a beautiful gift.”

In Megan Mullally’s long and emotional tribute, she called Jordan “hands down, one of the greats,” going on to say he was “flawlessly funny, a virtuoso of comedy.” Jordan’s character Beverley would often trade barbs with Mullally’s Karen on the hit series, creating some of its most sidesplitting moments.

At the end of her tribute, Mullally said, “one thing i know for sure… there will never ever be another you.”

Dolly Parton expressed her condolences with a text slide to Instagram, writing, “I am as hurt and shocked as if I have lost a family member.” She noted the “special bond” she shared with Jordan and said “he will be missed by everyone who knew him personally and by everyone who was entertained by him.”

The official account for “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” on which Jordan acted as a guest judge, also shared a tribute, thanking Jordan on Twitter for “the countless laughs and for sharing your spirit with us all.”

Celebrities from across television and film – both those who worked with Jordan and not – also honored the actor.

“Leslie was such a light for so many,” actress Michelle Pfeiffer wrote on Instagram. “Generously gifting the world with his love and humor, especially during this lockdown; one of our bleakest and loneliest times. He lived everyday to bring joy to every one he came in contact with.”

Loni Love shared a sweet memory, writing that the last time they worked together was when they both guest co-hosted CBS’s “The Talk” and Jordan “was so much fun to be around.”

“[He] always had a funny story and he inspired me to keep going in an industry that could be ageist,” she wrote. “I will miss you my friend. Mama is waiting on you.”

On Twitter, Lynda Carter remembered Jordan for being someone who “put a smile on the faces of so many, especially with his pandemic videos.”

“What a feat to keep us all laughing and connected in such difficult times,” she wrote. “It feels so cruel that this could happen to such a beautiful soul.”

Jordan’s most recent role was on Fox’s “Call Me Kat.” The show, which is currently in its third season, halted filming in wake of the news of Jordan’s death, according to a Fox Entertainment spokesperson.

In a statement provided to CNN, Fox Entertainment said Jordan “was far more than an Emmy Award winning comedic talent with whom we’ve laughed alongside for all these years. He was the kindest person you could ever imagine who simply lit up a room and brought pure joy and huge smiles to millions of people around the world.”

Pirates, Ke’Bryan Hayes Agree To Eight-Year, $70MM Extension

The Pirates took a major step toward locking up their young core this afternoon, inking third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to an eight-year, $70MM extension, reports Robert Murray of Fansided. The deal, which represents both the largest guarantee ever given to a player with between one and two years of service time and the largest deal ever handed out by the Pirates, will keep Hayes in Pittsburgh through at least 2029. It also includes a club option for the 2030 season, the terms of which are not yet clear. Hayes is represented by The Ballengee Group.

The deal buys out three years of the third baseman’s free agency, which would have arrived at the conclusion of the 2026 season barring an unforeseen demotion. Hayes, who is entering his age-25 season in 2022, will now remain under team control through his age-32 (or age-33, should the Pirates exercise his option) season. While he could still be in line for a solid payday at that point should he remain productive, today’s extension is likely to cover the great majority of his prime years — meaning that his $70MM guarantee is likely to constitute a majority of his career earnings.

Since being promoted to the big leagues midway through the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Hayes has been one of the few bright spots for a moribund Pirates franchise, slashing a world-beating .376/.442/.682 across 95 plate appearances across 24 games. His numbers came back to earth in 2021, perhaps as a result of an early-season wrist injury that held him out of action for roughly a third of the year and sapped him of much of his power. In his short career, Hayes has posted a .280/.340/.442 triple-slash while playing high-end defense at third, winning the 2021 Fielding Bible Award for third basemen (edging out Matt Chapman and Nolan Arenado).

While keeping Hayes (the son of long-time big-leaguer Charlie Hayes) around for the long term is sure to promote some optimism within the long-suffering Pittsburgh fanbase, few expect the Bucs to contend in the immediate future. After losing 101 games in 2021, GM Ben Cherington hardly re-loaded in the offseason, trading for infielder Josh VanMeter and signing first baseman Daniel Vogelbach and outfielder Jake Marisnick to low-cost free agent deals. The club does have a series of high-end prospects on the horizon, however, including recently optioned 6’7″ shortstop Oneil Cruz and right-hander Roansy Contreras, both of whom are likely to see big-league action sooner than later. Second baseman Nick Gonzalez and righty Quinn Priester could also see the majors in 2022, while catcher Harry Ford is probably a year or two away.

Cherington’s success in locking up Hayes for the foreseeable future draws attention to questions surrounding the future of center fielder Bryan Reynolds, the other high-end talent on the Bucs’ active roster. Reynolds, who proved his struggles 2020 struggles a fluke to the tune of a .302/.390/.522 triple-slash in 2021, is under club control through his age-30 season in 2025, reportedly turned down a number of extension proposals ahead of the 2021 season and didn’t re-engage with the club between the end of the season and the implementation of the lockout. He’s been the subject of endless trade rumors — he’s been directly linked to the Padres and Marlins this offseason — but Pittsburgh’s asking price is (understandably) sky-high. Even if they continue to go year-to-year with Reynolds (presently a Super Two, he’ll earn either $4.25MM or $4.9MM in 2022, depending on the outcome of an in-season arbitration hearing), the Bucs can expect Reynolds to play alongside their high-end up-and-coming talent for at least a few years before hitting the open market.

More to come.

Pirates “Making Serious Effort” To Extend Ke’Bryan Hayes

The Pirates have made an extension offer to young third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, to no avail. This is not the first time that the Pirates have explored an extension with Hayes, but this time, they are “making a serious effort,” per Jon Heyman of the MLB Network (via Twitter).

MLBTR’s Steve Adams took a look at the potential of a Hayes extension back in August. There aren’t a lot of great recent comps for a Hayes extension. That said, the Pirates should have what it takes financially to make Hayes the first cornerstone of this current iteration of Pirates baseball. They have zero guaranteed contracts on the books for next season and beyond.

To this point, however, the Pirates have not shown signs of turning the corner into a competitive structure. An extension for Hayes would represent that sort of step. As of now, Hayes will not be arbitration eligible until after the 2023 season, and he won’t head to free agency until after 2026.
