U.S. Army awards Black Hawk replacement contract to Textron’s Bell

WASHINGTON, Dec 5 (Reuters) – The U.S. Army on Monday awarded the contract for its next-generation helicopter to Textron Inc’s (TXT.N) Bell unit, ending a years-long competition for the technology that will replace the Black Hawk utility helicopter.

The Army’s “Future Vertical Lift” competition aimed at finding a replacement as the Army looks to retire more than 2,000 medium-class UH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters built by Sikorsky since the 1970s.

The Army was looking for an aircraft capable of moving about a dozen troops 400 nautical miles. “We are ready to equip soldiers with the speed and range they need to compete and win using the most mature, reliable, and affordable high-performance long-range assault weapon system,” Mitch Snyder, CEO of Bell said in a statement.

The Army said the initial award was for $232 million, but the first batch of helicopters in low rate production will be worth $7.1 billion. Ultimately, the contract is potentially worth around $70 billion – over decades – depending on how many the Army and U.S. allies order, the Army told reporters on Monday evening.

“The thoughtful and disciplined execution of the FLRAA (Future Long Range Assault Aircraft) program strategy will deliver the transformational capabilities we need to support the Joint force, strengthen deterrence and win in multi-domain operations,” said Doug Bush, assistant secretary of the army for acquisition, logistics, and technology.

In the FLARAA competition was Bell’s V-280 “Valor,” a tiltrotor aircraft that has reached speeds in excess of 340 mph (547 km) according to the Army. It beat out the entrant from Lockheed Martin’s (LMT.N) Sikorsky and Boeing Co’s (BA.N) SB-1 “Defiant” which has two coaxial rotors and a single pusher propeller and has reached speeds of 265 mph, according to the Army.

Often defense procurement awards of this magnitude are protested. Bush said “we planned for that contingency, but that is completely up to the vendor.” It is likely that if a protest were to be filed it would be in several weeks once administrative meetings occurred.

Textron’s shares rose about 8.5% in trading after the bell on the news.

Why Tony Hawk is stoked about his ‘fun and irreverent” collab with Hot Wheels

Hot Wheels Skate is a line of “fingerboards” — mini skateboards used to simulate skateboarding tricks using the middle and index fingers. The toys were first popularized by professional skateboarder Lance Mountain in the 1980s.

The Tony Hawk fingerboards and matching playsets, featuring ramps and other skate park elements, will be available exclusively at Walmart. For beginners, the sets even include clip-on “skate shoes” that clip to the boards, making them easy for kids of all ages to use.

Hawk, 54, told CNN that he’s most excited about the fact that the line is suitable for fingerboarders of all skill sets.

“I loved the direction they had because it was more for all skill types,” he said. “Also just their creative team is so amazing. So the playsets that they have are really fun, and irreverent. And so it just seemed like a really cool angle and take on on fingerboarding as a whole.”

For Hawk, the beginner-friendly ethos of the fingerboard sets stems from the inclusivity skateboarding symbolizes in general.

“I feel like skateboarding is the great equalizer,” he said. “And anyone is invited to jump in. You’re only judged by your skating and not by your background. And uniqueness is key — uniqueness is welcome.”

As part of the partnership, Hot Wheels announced that they will donate to The Skate Park Project, a non-profit organization Hawk started to create public skateparks around the US.

The organization is “important to me because I grew up near one of the last skate parks in the US,” he said. “That was my home away from home, that’s where I found my sense of community, where I found my friends, my sense of identity. And it was never lost on me how lucky I was to have that.”

“And so when I had some sort of success, I thought the best thing I can do with that is to provide more of these places that meant so much to me as a kid,” he went on. “It’s more about developing a place for your community, not about trying to raise professionals.”

Hawk retired from professional skateboarding in 2003, but has continued to champion the sport, helping transform it from a counterculture activity to a defined and rigorous sport with prestigious competitions. In 2021, the sport even premiered in the Olympics, a move that Hawk said has helped show people just how “disciplined and how serious it can be.”

This year, Hawk plans to host the second annual Vert Alert, a competition designed to highlight the “underappreciated” challenges of vertical skating — that is, skating up a steep ramp or incline, instead of in a street setting or skate park.

Tony Hawk and Hot Wheels Are Teaming up to Take on Tech Deck

Image: Mattel

If you plan to take on a toy line with an established brand that’s been around for almost 25 years, you need to bring something new to the playroom. For Hot Wheels, hoping to take on Tech Deck’s miniature skateboards, that involves partnering with Tony Hawk and introducing tiny finger-worn skate shoes. Sorry, what?

Believe it or not, tiny skateboards can actually trace their heritage back to the late ‘60s, with tiny skateboard keychains being sold to dedicated cube gleamers at skate shops, while the mid-’80s popularized the sport of fingerboarding (it’s a real thing!) and brought tiny decks specifically designed and built for competition. One of the most popular lines to date, and one of the first to license the art and graphics from real skateboard brands, was Tech Deck, which is still making fingerboards almost 25 years after its launch (but it is now owned by Canada’s Spin Master). Tech Deck is undoubtedly the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions fingerboarding, but Mattel and Hot Wheels want to change that.

Image: Mattel

Although Tony Hawk, and his company Birdhouse, have teamed up with Tech Deck in the past for themed finger decks and playsets, the iconic skateboarding legend is now working with Mattel to promote its new Hot Wheels Skate line, which more or less look similar to Tech Deck’s products, with working trucks and wheels joining custom artwork on the underside and grip tape on the top. Also, don’t forget that Hot Wheels logo.

Image: Mattel

What sets the Hot Wheels Skate line apart from Tech Deck is the inclusion of tiny fingertip skate shoes that physically clip onto the tiny decks. Learning fingerboarding tricks is not quite as hard as learning to do real skateboarding tricks, but it’s also not easy, and the tiny shoes clipped onto the tiny decks supposedly make it easier for novices to learn and successfully perform tricks.

The basic Hot Wheels Skate assortment that includes a single deck and a pair of finger shoes will sell for $3 each, while pricier $6 Hot Wheels Skate Collector Series packs add an exclusive matching Hot Wheels vehicle. A $12 Hot Wheels Skate multi-pack will also be available that includes four fully-assembled fingerboards (Tech Deck’s offerings often require assembly) plus two pairs of skate shoes.

For those completely sold on the idea of tiny skate shoes making fingerboarding more accessible and inviting, Mattel is also releasing accompanying playsets. These include a collection of $15 a piece Hot Wheels Skate Drop-in Skate Sets that can be collected and combined to create larger skate parks, plus a $30 Hot Wheels Skate Amusement Park Skate Set with a half-pipe that includes buttons to trigger “rad music and sounds” (fingers crossed that includes Motörhead’s Ace Of Spades) and other obstacles like rails, ramps, and surfaces for grinding.

Tony Hawk Says A Pro Skater 3+4 Remake Was Killed By Activision

Image: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4

From 1991 until 2021, Vicarious Visions was the name of a studio that made a ton of pretty cool licensed games, but which had also contributed to the beloved Tony Hawk Pro Skater series. Then Activision stepped in and made some changes.

In January 2021, having just released a remake of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2, Activision announced that the developers were being merged into Blizzard, and would also be receiving a name change, effectively killing off the studio as we knew it.

I said at the time “This sucks!”, but it sucks even more now because of the claims—from someone who would know—that the developers had been planning on repeating the remake treatment with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4.

On a recent stream by Neversoft and Vicarious veteran andyTHPS Tony Hawk himself was there for an interview, and casually dropped the fact that, right up until the moment of THPS 1+2’s release, “the plan” had been to then move on and bring out a remastered bundle of THPS 3+4.

I mean that was the plan, you know, even up until the release date of [THPS1+2] we were going 3+4, and then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and they were looking for other developers, and then it was over.

We have no idea how far along that plan was. Maybe THPS 3+4 was nothing more than a bullet point on a whiteboard, something the team had wanted to get started on next but were never given the chance (though we’ve reached out to Activision to see if they can provide more information). So we also have no idea how hard Activision looked for “other developers” (none of whom apparently could be “trusted” like Vicarious could, even when asked to pitch ideas for a Tony Hawk project), or who those other studios were since it feels like everyone at the company is either making Call of Duty or Blizzard games. Whatever the facts, though, like I said above, this sucks!

Tony Hawk says Activision ‘scrapped a 3 + 4 remake’ following Vicarious Visions’ merger

A planned remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4 was canned due to Activision Blizzard [981 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/”>Activision Blizzard’s decision to absorb 1 + 2 developer Vicarious Visions [43 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/activision/vicarious-visions/”>Vicarious Visions.

That’s according to the pro skater himself, who claimed during a live stream on Monday that Activision [907 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/activision/”>Activision had briefly taken pitches from other studios, but allegedly wasn’t happy with any of them.

“That was the plan, even up until the release date of [1 and 2],” Hawk said. “We were doing 3 and 4, and then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and then they were looking for other developers, and then it was over.”

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 trailer

He added: “The truth of it is [Activision] were trying to find somebody to do 3 and 4 but they just didn’t really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious.

“So they took other pitches from other studios, like, ‘what would you do with the THPS title?’ And they didn’t like anything they heard, and then that was it.

“Who knows? Maybe when the dust settles, we’ll figure it out. You never know. I never would’ve thought we were going to do 1 and 2 20 years later.”

Activision Blizzard announced in January 2021 that it planned to fold Vicarious Visions into Blizzard as a support team, and the merger became official in April of this year.

At the time, Activision Blizzard said the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy developer would no longer be creating games as a lead studio.

Going forward, the Vicarious Visions team of around 200 people will be employees of Blizzard Entertainment [229 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/activision-blizzard/blizzard-entertainment/”>Blizzard and “fully dedicated to existing Blizzard games and initiatives,” Activision Blizzard said.

The veteran studio was formed over 30 years ago and has worked on dozens of titles, including Skylanders, Guitar Hero, Destiny (series) [181 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/games/destiny-series/”>Destiny and Call of Duty.

2020’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 – its most recent game and its last as a lead developer – received favourable reviews from critics and debuted as the fastest-selling entry in the franchise, selling one million copies within its first two weeks.

2017’s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy was an even bigger success with 10 million copies sold in its first two years.

VGC’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 review said of the game: “Vicarious Visions has delivered a superb remake of two iconic games without letting modern gaming’s vices get in the way.”

Tony Hawk Suffers Serious Leg Injury; Shares Photos, Videos from Hospital | Bleacher Report

Evan Agostini/Invision for Clio Awards/AP Images

Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk revealed on Instagram that he suffered a broken femur.

“Yesterday sucked,” the 53-year-old Hawk wrote in part on IG.

“I broke my elbow 20 years ago and managed to make a full comeback; this recovery for a broken femur will be much harder because of its severity (and my age). But I’m up for the challenge.”

Per TMZ Sports, Hawk suffered the broken femur while skating, but it’s unclear exactly what led to the injury. Video showed Hawk on the road to recovery walking down a hospital hallway on crutches.

He ended his IG post as follows:

A broken leg—with plenty of hardware—will probably be the biggest test of that creed. I’ll be back… maybe not at full capacity but I resigned to that notion years ago as I approached “mid-life.” Thanks to my unyieldingly supportive, tolerant family—and all of you—for the love and support through the years; I wouldn’t be here without you. See you on the other side.”

Hawk is one of the most decorated skateboarders in the sport’s history and undoubtedly its most popular and iconic one. He won 10 Summer X Games gold medals during his decorated career and notably became the first-ever person to complete a documented 900:

Hawk is also the namesake for the popular video game series, which began in 1999 with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater.

He is also the founder of The Skatepark Project.

Black Hawk helicopters crash, Utah National Guard says

No crew members or skiers at the Snowbird ski resort were injured, according to Jared Jones, chief warrant officer 5 with the Utah National Guard.

“Everyone is safe,” Jones said. “It was a blessing that everyone was OK.”

The accident occurred near the Mineral Basin area of Snowbird, “about 150 yards off of Snowbird proper,” Jones said.

The resort, almost 30 miles from Salt Lake City, has the capacity to carry more than 17,000 skiers and snowboarders uphill per hour on its many lifts, according to Snowbird’s website.
Both helicopters suffered some damage because of the crash, the Utah National Guard said in a tweet.

“As the first aircraft landed … portions of the blade of the lead helicopter separated and it appears struck the second helicopter,” Jones said.

The accident is under investigation.
