Pelicans star Zion Williamson leaves loss to 76ers early with hamstring injury

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson left their loss to the Philadelphia 76ers early Monday night due to a hamstring injury.

While it’s unclear how severe Williamson’s injury is at this point — coach Willie Green said he only knew that it was Williamson’s right hamstring after the game, nothing more — it comes amid an impressive stretch of play from Williamson and the Pelicans.

“It was right at a pivotal moment in the game,” Green said of the injury, via ESPN’s Andrew Lopez. “We’ll get some imaging and look at him and hopefully he’s OK. It was a tough loss for us.”

Williamson went down in the third quarter shortly after grabbing a defensive rebound. Williamson tried to push the ball up the court, but suddenly pulled up and started grabbing at his right leg as he quickly handed the ball off.

Williamson then checked out of the game after a foul on the other end, and didn’t return. He finished the night with 26 points, seven assists and six rebounds while shooting 10-of-12 from the field.

Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 42 points and 11 rebounds in the 120-111 Philadelphia win, while James Harden added 27. The 76ers have now won 10 of their last 12.

Williamson is averaging 29.1 points and 6.3 rebounds in his past 10 games for the Pelicans, who sit just one game back from first place in the Western Conference. After missing the entire 2021-22 campaign with a foot injury and significant time in his first two professional seasons, Williamson has played in 29 of a possible 37 games this season — missing games only due to minor injuries or in the league’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

It’s unknown how long Williamson will be out, if at all. Yet given his injury history and the fact that it’s still early January, there’s no real reason to rush him back. The Pelicans will host the Houston Rockets next on Wednesday before games against the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Lakers’ Russell Westbrook cites coming off bench for hamstring strain

SAN FRANCISCO — Russell Westbrook said he “absolutely” believes that Los Angeles Lakers coach Darvin Ham’s decision to bring him off the bench in L.A.’s preseason finale could have caused the hamstring strain he suffered that night.

“I’ve been doing the same thing for 14 years straight,” Westbrook said following the Lakers’ 123-109 loss to the Golden State Warriors in their regular-season opener Tuesday night. “Honestly, I didn’t even know what to do pregame. Being honest, I was trying to figure out how to stay warm and loose. … That’s something I just wasn’t accustomed to.”

Westbrook was back in the starting lineup against the Warriors — playing with the first unit for the 1,005th time in 1,022 career games — after being limited in the days leading up to it because of his hamstring injury.

He played just five minutes in the exhibition loss to the Sacramento Kings on Friday. He alluded to being able to play more but choosing not to because, “I wasn’t going to risk it in a preseason game.”

Westbrook played 31 minutes against Golden State and finished with 19 points on 7-for-12 shooting, 11 rebounds, three assists, one steal and four turnovers. His plus-minus rating of minus-six was better than that of both LeBron James (-10) and Anthony Davis (-21).

Ham said he wanted Westbrook’s approach to competition to jolt his team from the opening tip.

“You want to start the game off the right way in terms of your energy and being in attack mode, and no one better than him,” said Ham, who spoke to reporters before Westbrook did following the game. “I mean, it’s what we have, and we got some key guys hurt. It’s Game 1, give them a chance to go out and compete at the highest level. I thought he was solid. I thought he was solid. A couple possessions I wish I can get back, but overall, I thought he was solid.”

Before the contest, Ham said he wanted to “establish” a consistent starting unit.

“We don’t want to be one of those teams,” he said, “where teams are swaying according to who their opponent is starting.”

However, asked whether that meant he would stick with his opening-night starters for a stretch of time moving forward, Ham would not commit.

“We’ll see,” he said. “I’m a day-by-day guy.”

Davis said after the game that Westbrook’s bench role against the Kings was merely experimentation.

“I don’t think he was ever out of [the starting group],” Davis said. “I think it was a look [at a different rotation] in Sac.”

It was only the 22nd regular-season game that Davis, Westbrook and James played together since L.A. traded for Westbrook in the summer of 2021. The loss on Tuesday dropped their record together to 11-11. Yet Davis and James were encouraged.

“I think we played well,” Davis said. “We wanted to come out and everybody be aggressive. We didn’t want to — I think last year at times we were playing selfless, like, ‘Here [you take it].’ … It took away our aggression. At certain moments throughout the game, one of us three were aggressive, and it worked out for it to look good.”

As James added, “I thought we all just kind of played free. And it resulted in all three of us pretty much being efficient from the floor.”

TNT analyst Charles Barkley didn’t see it the same way.

“You know how I feel about Russell Westbrook,” Barkley said at halftime of the broadcast. “I admire him. I respect him. It’s time for the Lakers to move him. They have taken all his joy out of life and basketball. … This guy used to be so exuberant and play with great energy and great emotion, I think the wear and tear mentally last year, starting this year. … And the thing is, he’s going to get the blame no matter what, because the Lakers ain’t a championship contender. … I think he needs a fresh start, I think the Lakers need a fresh start, because they’re not contenders.”

Westbrook was asked about Barkley’s comments and whether he has lost joy for the game since joining the Lakers.

“You know, man, I’m super blessed and leaning a lot on my faith,” Westbrook said. “So, I have a lot of great friends and family, good people in my corner that support me through thick and thin, and when I have God in my corner, it doesn’t really matter what happens outside of that. I stay on course, stay focused, stay locked in. That’s all I can ask.

“Everything else that comes around it, I’ll continue doing what I’m doing, stay locked in on my craft and everything else will take care of itself.”

Philadelphia Eagles RB Miles Sanders ‘ready to go’ for Week 1 from hamstring injury

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles running back Miles Sanders, who has been dealing with a hamstring injury, said he is “ready to go” for Sunday’s opener at the Detroit Lions.

Sanders was sidelined for more than two weeks following the first preseason game against the New York Jets, but he was a full participant in practice Wednesday as preparations for the Lions began.

“It’s just one of those injuries you don’t want to risk it in camp, so I attacked the rehab and I’m back, ready to go,” he said Thursday.

Sanders, 25, is projected to be the lead back for an Eagles team that paced the league in rushing with 160 yards per game last season. He finished with 754 yards on 137 carries (5.5 yards per attempt) over 12 games last season, missing time with ankle and hand injuries.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Sanders has described this upcoming season as “a little personal” and said he’s out to “get the respect I finally deserve.”

He’s expected to get the bulk of the carries, with Kenneth Gainwell, Boston Scott and the newly acquired Trey Sermon as the other backfield options.

“Miles is our guy,” offensive coordinator Shane Steichen said. “We feel really good about that group, but to add another talented player like [Sermon], it’ll be good for us.”

Report: Tyron Smith could miss multiple months with torn hamstring

Getty Images

The Cowboys may have lost one of their best players for a significant period of time.

Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a torn left hamstring in Wednesday’s practice and could miss multiple months of the 2022 season, according to ESPN.

Smith went down during practice with what first appeared to be a knee injury, and when tests showed no damage to Smith’s ACL, it seemed to be good news.

But additional testing found that Smith’s hamstring is torn, and now he’s set for more testing on Thursday to determine the severity of the hamstring tear.

Without Smith, the Cowboys are missing a big part of their offensive line. Rookie first-round draft pick Tyler Smith played left tackle in college and might be called upon to do it now for the Cowboys, but prior to Tyron Smith’s injury, the Cowboys wanted Tyler Smith to play guard as a rookie. Josh Ball, a 2021 fourth-round pick who didn’t play at all as a rookie, and Matt Waletzko, a 2022 fifth-round pick, would be other options to replace Smith at left tackle.

The Cowboys selected Tyron Smith in the first round of the 2011 draft, and he’s been in Dallas longer than any other player on the roster. When healthy he has been among the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

Hamstring injury expected to keep San Francisco 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell out of preseason, source says

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell is expected to miss all three of the team’s preseason games after suffering a hamstring injury, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

Mitchell is, however, expected to be ready for the regular season, the source told Schefter.

Mitchell did not participate in the team’s Wednesday practice and was in street clothes before Friday’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Through the first two weeks of camp, Mitchell had resumed the role he took on last season as San Francisco’s starting running back. With Mitchell out, the 49ers will turn to a group that includes Trey Sermon, rookie Tyrion Davis-Price and JaMycal Hasty to handle the exhibition carries.

Veteran back Jeff Wilson Jr. is also on the roster but did not play against Green Bay, along with a large group of key Niners that includes left tackle Trent Williams, end Nick Bosa, linebacker Fred Warner, receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle.

A 2021 sixth-round pick out of Louisiana, Mitchell set a franchise rookie rushing record last season with 963 yards, adding five touchdowns despite missing six games with a litany of injuries (ribs, knee, finger, shoulder and concussion).

After offseason knee surgery, Mitchell came back to camp a bit heavier with the hopes of handling the workload without issue. Mitchell is the second key Niner dealing with a muscle strain after a similar issue landed cornerback Charvarius Ward on the sideline earlier this week. Like Mitchell, Ward is expected to be ready for the regular season.

Miami Heat’s Kyle Lowry leaves with hamstring injury; Game 4 status in air

ATLANTA — Miami Heat point guard Kyle Lowry suffered a left hamstring injury in the third quarter of the Hawks’ 111-110 Game 3 victory on Friday night.

He could only watch from the bench as Atlanta, the Eastern Conference’s No. 8 seed, erased a double-digit deficit to draw within 2-1 of the No. 1-seeded Heat in the best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

“I’m pissed the f— off,” Lowry told ESPN as he walked out of State Farm Arena after the game with a noticeable limp.

Lowry told ESPN he planned to undergo round-the-clock treatment leading up to Sunday’s Game 4. When asked if the injury could cause him to miss any time as the series moves forward, he brushed off any concern.

“No, I’m Wolverine,” Lowry said with a wry smile, referencing the X-Men comic book character known for his super-human healing powers.

Lowry exited the game with 1:59 remaining in the third quarter and the Heat ahead by 13 points. He did not return.

The Hawks finished the quarter on a 6-1 run and then outscored Miami 34-25 in the fourth to close things out with a three-guard lineup of Trae Young (10 of his 24 points in the fourth), Bogdan Bogdanovic (nine of his 18 points in the fourth) and Delon Wright (five of his 13 points in the fourth).

“All I know right now is it’s a hamstring,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after the game when asked about Lowry. “But I do not know the severity of it and we’ll find out more tomorrow.”

Lowry had only six points on 2-for-7 shooting and five assists in Game 3, but registered a team-best plus-minus of plus-18 in the 23 minutes he was on the court.

The Heat had 25 assists on their first 31 baskets through the first three quarters (80.6%) but assisted on just five of 10 field goals in the fourth quarter with Lowry out as the Miami offense devolved to several long jump shots down the stretch.

“I know we love that guy as our point guard,” said Jimmy Butler, who had 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists but missed a potential game-winning 3 at the buzzer. “If he’s with us, yippee-ki-yay. If he’s not, somebody has got to step in and do his job.

“It’s very, very hard to do. But we got enough in that locker room to try to bring to the table what Kyle does. He’ll get his treatment and we’ll see where he’s at.”

Devin Booker injury update: Suns star likely out Games 3 and 4 vs. Pelicans with hamstring issue, per report

Devin Booker was having yet another stellar postseason performance on Tuesday. He scored 31 points in 25 minutes, and at one point, he even dapped up a baby sitting courtside. With Phoenix in the lead against the No. 8 seeded New Orleans Pelicans, the Suns appeared to be well on their way to a 2-0 series lead.

But in the third quarter, Booker went back to the locker room with an apparent injury. Suns coach Monty Williams revealed afterward that Booker was dealing with a hamstring issue that sidelined him for most of the second half. The Suns, heavily favored at home, went on to lose Game 2 to the Pelicans, 125-114, and find themselves tied in their series up at one game apiece.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Booker is unlikely to play in Games 3 and 4 of the Suns’ first-round series. However, Booker’s right hamstring strain is believed to be mild and he isn’t being ruled out of the series yet, per Wojnarowski.

The Suns star’s MRI results are still being evaluated before making an official determination.

“We’ll have more information (Wednesday),” Suns coach Monty Williams said following Game 2. “We’ve played without Chris (Paul) and Book before. If we have to play without Book, next man up. We’ve done that all year long.”

Now the series will shift to New Orleans, and while the Suns will remain favorites with or without Booker, the pressure is suddenly on Phoenix. They no longer have home-court advantage in the series, and while they had an 8-3 record in the 11 games they played without Booker before clinching the No. 1 seed, playoff games are another matter entirely. Seven of those missed games were due to a hamstring injury Booker suffered in November, and while there’s no telling how serious this one is, that one kept him out for a little less than three weeks. Generating offense without your top scorer is a much taller order when teams have played you multiple times in a short span.

All the Suns can hope for now is a positive prognosis on Booker’s hamstring. The hamstring can be a fickle body part when it comes to injuries, as Booker’s teammate Chris Paul knows well. The Suns may be able to escape the first round without Booker, but they need him if they plan to make it back to the NBA Finals.
