Damar Hamlin updates: Bills safety releases video to speak publicly for first time since cardiac arrest

In a six-minute video released Saturday, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin spoke at-length for the first time since suffering a near-fatal cardiac arrest after making a tackle during a Week 17 game against the Cincinnati Bengals. In the introduction to the video, Hamlin explains that he waited to speak until the time was right, explaining that his situation was a lot to process mentally, physically, and spiritually while also citing the end of the Bills’ season.

Hamlin began by expressing his gratitude and appreciation for the support that has been extended towards him, before thanking an extensive amount of people and groups.

“What happened to me on Monday Night Football, I feel, is a direct example of God using me as a vessel to share my passion and my love directly from my heart with the entire world,” Hamlin said. “And now I’m able to give it back to kids and communities all across the world who need it the most. That’s always been my dream, that’s always been what I’ve stood for and what I will continue to stand for.”

Hamlin then thanked the Bills’ training, athletic, and medical staffs as well as the staffs of UC Medical Center and Buffalo General Hospital, all of whom were involved with his life-saving treatment and subsequent care. Hamlin then thanked his mother and father, his little brother, and other family and friends before thanking the Bills’ fanbase.

“Ever since I became a Buffalo Bill, it’s been nothing but genuine love and support. Not even only for me, but everyone’s situation,” Hamlin said. “No matter what it was, Bills Mafia jumped behind it and gave 110% support, love, no matter the situation. With this happening to me, I didn’t feel anything short of the love. And it really helped me stay encouraged to get through the toughest moments and the toughest times. I really can’t thank you enough.”

Hamlin then thanked his Bills teammates before going on to extend his thanks to the city of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the rest of the NFL for the outpouring of support that was shown in the days and week of football that followed Hamlin’s medical episode.

“You put humanity above team loyalty. You showed the world unity over division,” Hamlin said. “I am not surprised by it, but I am deeply grateful and I will be forever thankful and indebted to that.”

Finally, Hamlin thanked the children who sent him letters and gifts while he was recovering, and he also thanked those who donated to Chasing M’s Foundation. The Foundation, which Hamlin started prior to his NFL career to give back to children in his native Western Pennsylvania, received nearly $8 million in donations after his near-fatal injury.

“This is just the beginning of the impact that I wanted to have on the world,” Hamlin said in closing. “And with God’s guidance, I will continue to do wonderful and great things. I couldn’t do this without any of the support and the love, and I can’t wait to continue to take you all on this journey with me.”

Midway through the first quarter of the Bills’ Week 17 game against the Bengals, Hamlin collided with Tee Higgins as he tackled the Bengals’ star wide receiver after a gain of 13 yards. Hamlin immediately collapsed upon standing, prompting the Bills’ medical staff to administer emergency medical treatment. Hamlin was taken off the field via ambulance and transported to UC Medical Center after receiving CPR and an automated external defibrillation (AED), where he remained in critical condition for some time. The game was abandoned and never resumed.

Hamlin, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, started 13 games this season in place of an injured Micah Hyde.

Damar Hamlin makes first video comments since cardiac arrest: ‘Direct example of God using me’

In his first comments on camera since going into cardiac arrest on Monday Night Football on Jan. 2, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin said he would not have made it through the “toughest moments and the toughest times” without the support from all over the world.

Right after making a tackle on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, Hamlin stood up, but immediately collapsed. Medical staff performed CPR on him for over nine minutes, and he left the field on an ambulance after having to be defibrillated.

Hamlin was released from the hospital on Jan. 11, and says he continues to make “so much progress recovering.”

The 24-year-old has been active on social media, even live-tweeting during several Bills games, but he wanted to wait for the “right time” to share a message on video.

“Now that my brothers have closed out a strong, winning season, as I continue to make so much progress recovering, I think it’s finally a good time to share a few things,” he said in an Instagram post on Saturday. “I think it was important for me to wait and speak publicly at the right time, as it was just a lot to process within my own self mentally, physically, even spiritually, it’s just been a lot to process. But I can’t tell you how appreciative I am of all the love, all the support, and everything that’s just been coming my way.

That’s always been what I stood for and what I’ll continue to stand for.”

He went on to thank the Bills medical staff and doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical center, who “acted willfully and skillfully to save my life.”

Damar Hamlin: Buffalo Bills safety still faces ‘lengthy recovery’ spokesman said

CNN
 —

More than two weeks after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game, a representative for Hamilin says the defensive player has a long road ahead of him.

Hamlin’s longtime friend and business partner Jordon Rooney said to CNN: “Despite being out of the hospital, Damar still has a lengthy recovery.

“Damar still requires oxygen and is having his heart monitored regularly. He has visited with the team a few times but he still gets winded very easily. He’s upbeat and positive and ready to continue to overcome this.”

The statement comes just one day after Bills head coach Sean McDermott told reporters that Hamlin has been at the team facility almost daily, CNN previously reported.

“It’s limited, just overall, but he comes in and – it really just started really today or yesterday – just trying to get back to a little bit of a routine, just getting himself acclimated again, taking it one baby step at a time,” said McDermott on Wednesday as he spoke about Hamlin.

“His appearance, like walking around here, it’s a positive thing and to see three [Hamlin wears the No. 3 on his jersey] just smile and just wave and just put his hearts up and keep it pushing. It’s a positive energy bubble that’s just floating around the facility,” said offensive lineman Dion Dawkins.

The Bills are set to play the Cincinnati Bengals – the team Buffalo played against when Hamlin collapsed on the field – on Sunday in the AFC divisional round at 3 p.m. ET.

Going home: Bills’ Hamlin released from Buffalo hospital

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The “Prayers for Damar 3” have been answered. Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is finally home.

Nine days after he stunned and saddened his teammates by going into cardiac arrest and being resuscitated on the field in Cincinnati, and placed the NFL on hold, Hamlin was released from a Buffalo hospital on Wednesday, the Bills announced.

“We have completed a series of tests and evaluation and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged,” Dr. Jamie Nadler said in a news release issued by the team.

This marks the next major step in what doctors have called Hamlin’s remarkable recovery, which came two days after he was deemed healthy enough to be transferred from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center to the Buffalo General Medical Center. Nadler said the 24-year-old Hamlin will continue his rehabilitation with the Bills.

The Bills and Nadler did not disclose the results of the tests Hamlin had over the past two days in Buffalo to determine the reason his heart stopped after he struck squarely in the chest by Bengals receiver Tee Higgins while making what appeared to be a routine tackle. Hamlin collapsed during the first quarter of Buffalo’s since-canceled game at Cincinnati on Jan. 2, a chilling scene that played out in front of millions on television.

“That just shows the type of kid that he is, how he’s fought and he’s continuing to win,” Bills left tackle Dion Dawkins said. “There’s no place that he would rather be than in his own bed, so blessing to him.”

As Hamlin’s recovery progressed, the Bills and the NFL’s messaging switched from “Prayers for Damar 3” to “Love for Damar 3” by last weekend, when the entire league honored Hamlin, who wears No. 3. The Bills and their fans capped an emotionally draining week with a 35-23 regular-season-ending victory over New England.

“It’s an awesome feeling. And we’re just hoping that he’s getting his rest and recovery,” quarterback Josh Allen said Wednesday after practice, where the Bills (13-3) prepared to host their division rival Miami Dolphins (9-8) in a wild-card playoff game on Sunday. “As a team, we’re extremely happy.”

As much as players want to see Hamlin in person, Allen cautioned that moment might have to wait to allow Hamlin to gain his strength.

“Just making sure he’s taking it slow, and obviously trying to get back to being himself,” Allen added. “So we’ll take all the time that we need. But I hope he knows the guys are ready to see him.”

Coach Sean McDermott said it would be up to Hamlin to decide when to visit the team, saying: “We’ll welcome him back as he feels ready.”

Hamlin spent his first two days in hospital under sedation and showed no signs of neurological damage upon being awakened on Jan. 4. By Friday, he was breathing on his own and walking and appeared by videoconference in a team meeting, where he informed the Bills, “Love you boys.”

On Sunday, Hamlin was live-tweeting during the Bills’ victory, with doctors joking he tripped numerous alarms around the intensive care unit while watching teammate Nyheim Hines return the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown.

Following his transfer to Buffalo, Hamlin posted a note on Twitter that read: “Special thank-you to Buffalo General it’s been nothing but love since arrival!” while asking his followers to keep him in their prayers.

His doctors said Hamlin’s progress in recovering from cardiac arrest, considered a life-threatening event, has been normal to accelerated.

In the days that followed, $8.6 million in GoFundMe donations poured into Hamlin’s toy drive fundraiser, which will be used to support young people through education and sports.

Hamlin, who is from the Pittsburgh exurb of McKee’s Rock, also will use proceeds from the sale of new T-shirts, emblazoned with “Did We Win?” along with his hands in the shape of a heart, to raise money for the trauma center in Cincinnati that initially treated him.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin discharged from hospital | Buffalo Bills

Bills safety Damar Hamlin was released from a Buffalo hospital on Wednesday, more than a week after he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated during a game at Cincinnati, after his doctors said they completed a series of tests.

A news release from the Bills quoted Dr Jamie Nadler as saying: “We have completed a series of tests and evaluation and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged.” Nadler said Hamlin will continue his rehabilitation with the Bills.

Hamlin is going home after spending two days undergoing tests at Buffalo General Medical Center. He was transferred to Buffalo on Monday after spending last week at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where the 24-year-old from the Pittsburgh area experienced what doctors called “a remarkable recovery”.

The news came as the Bills returned to practice to prepare to host their division rival Miami Dolphins in a wild-card playoff game on Sunday.

Coach Sean McDermott said it would be up to Hamlin whether he would visit the team.

“His health is first and foremost on our mind a far as his situation goes,” McDermott told reporters. “We’ll welcome him back as he feels ready.”

Hamlin collapsed on the field after being struck in the chest by Bengals receiver Tee Higgins while making what appeared to be a routine tackle during the first quarter of Buffalo’s since-canceled game at Cincinnati on 2 January.

He spent the first two days in hospital under sedation. He was awakened and able to grip people’s hands at his bedside, and eventually taken off a ventilator and able to address his teammates on Friday.

His doctors said Hamlin’s progress in recovering from cardiac arrest, considered a life-threatening event, has been normal to accelerated, and that he was able to cheer on the Bills from his hospital bed during their win over the New England Patriots last weekend.

He has been tweeting his gratitude to fans and medical staff in recent days. “Keep me in y’all prayers please!” he wrote Tuesday.

Doctors have said it is premature to comment on the potential cause of Hamlin’s cardiac arrest. The news release did not provide any information on what the tests revealed.

The Bills wore No 3 Hamlin patches on their jerseys Sunday and honored their teammate by raising three fingers in the closing minutes. It was part of a league-wide outpouring of support for the second-year player out of Pitt, whose collapse during the Monday night game and the frightening aftermath was seen by millions of television viewers. With an ambulance standing by on the field, medical personnel frantically worked on Hamlin for several minutes as anguished teammates looked on, some of them in tears.

In the days that followed, $8.6m in GoFundMe donations poured into Hamlin’s toy drive fundraiser, which will be used to support young people through education and sports.

He also will use proceeds from the sale of new T-shirts, emblazoned with “Did We Win?” along with his hands in the shape of a heart, to raise money for the trauma center in Cincinnati that initially treated him.

Bills’ Damar Hamlin discharged from Buffalo hospital

BUFFALO, N.Y. — After more than nine days in two hospitals, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was discharged from Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute, the team announced Wednesday.

Hamlin is now back at his home in Buffalo with his family. He went through a series of comprehensive medical evaluations as well as a series of cardiac, neurological and vascular testing on Tuesday.

Dr. Jamie Nadler, critical care physician and chief quality officer at Kaleida Health, which runs Buffalo General, and the care team lead for Hamlin, said in a statement: “We have completed a series of tests and evaluations, and in consultation with the team physicians, we are confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills.”

Bills coach Sean McDermott said that they will leave it up to Hamlin when he would like to return to the team facility.

“His health is first and foremost on our mind as far as this situation,” McDermott said. “And then when he feels ready, we will welcome him back.”

Hamlin had been at the hospital in Buffalo since Monday after he was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. He spent almost a week at the hospital in Cincinnati after suffering cardiac arrest during the first quarter of a “Monday Night Football” game between the Bills and the Bengals. The game was initially postponed after Hamlin collapsed on the field and then canceled days later.

Hamlin, 24, was flown to Buffalo on Monday and admitted to Buffalo General but entered the hospital in stable condition. The team at the hospital in Buffalo was tasked with “identifying any possible causes of the event, potentially treat any pathology that may be found, as well as plan for his recovery, discharge and rehabilitation,” according to a release from Kaleida Health, which oversees the hospital.

Hamlin was joined by his parents, Mario and Nina, and his 7-year-old brother, Damir, at the hospital on Tuesday. His brother was unable to visit him in the ICU in Cincinnati due to rules to prevent the spread of flu and RSV, according to Bills general manager Brandon Beane.

In the days after he suffered cardiac arrest, Hamlin received support from all over the world with millions of dollars being donated to his GoFundMe toy drive as part of his Chasing Millions foundation. The 2021 sixth-round pick out of Pittsburgh has prioritized giving back to his community in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, and in Pittsburgh, and being an example for kids there. NFL teams showed their support for Hamlin in a variety of ways, including with blue-and-red stadium lights, T-shirts with “Love for Damar” and moments of prayer and celebrations of his recovery.

Bills players returned to the field Sunday for the first time since Hamlin’s cardiac arrest with their win over the New England Patriots, but the focus of the game was all on Hamlin, with players wearing jerseys with “3” patches on them and the Bills’ medical and athletic training staff recognized before the game. Fans throughout the stadium supported Hamlin with signs, while players held up three fingers throughout the game.

While Hamlin returns home, the Bills are practicing with him in mind as they prepare to face the Miami Dolphins.

“I feel really good about where [Hamlin’s health and well-being] is though, and the fact that he’s home with his parents,” McDermott said. “And for us — as Damar’s dad has said to us multiple times and Damar has mentioned as well — they want us to go do our job, and that’s what we’ve got to do.”
