Gurman: New MacBook Pro Models to Launch in Early 2023, iMac With M3 Chip Possible Later in Year

Apple plans to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options “early next year,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. The laptops were originally expected to launch this year, but reportedly faced delays internally.

No major changes are expected for the next 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models beyond the upgraded chip options and possibly faster RAM.

The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were released in October 2021 and featured an all-new design with a notch in the display and the return of an HDMI port, MagSafe, and an SD card reader. Macs often go several years between redesigns, so a mere spec bump in 2023 makes sense.

Gurman also said a new iMac with an M3 chip will “probably launch at the end of 2023 at the earliest,” without sharing any further details. The current iMac launched in April 2021 with the M1 chip and a slim, colorful design, and Gurman previously said Apple planned to skip releasing an iMac with the M2 chip. He added that Apple remains interested in a new iMac Pro with Apple silicon, but that it has faced delays internally.

Apple also continues to test new Mac mini models with M2 and M2 Pro chip options, according to Gurman, but he did not share a launch timeframe.

Gurman: Apple Planning No New Mac Releases For Remainder of 2022

Apple is not planning to announce any new Macs in the remainder of this year, with all planned releases expected to take place in the first quarter of 2023, including updated versions of the MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and the Mac Pro, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said today.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman said Apple has decided to wait until next year to announce new Macs, including MacBook Pros which were rumored to launch this month. “I’m told that Apple is aiming to introduce the upgraded models—including M2-based versions of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros—in the first quarter of calendar 2023,” Gurman said today.

During the company’s latest earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said Apple’s “product lineup is set” ahead of the holidays, possibly suggesting there will be no new product launches this year as Apple gears up for the holiday season. Apple’s CFO, Luca Maestri, provided a more decisive confirmation saying, “we have a very challenging compare against last year, which had the benefit of the launch and associated channel fill of our newly redesigned MacBook Pro with M1,” Gurman noted today in Power On.

As previously reported, Apple continues to test an Apple silicon ‌Mac Pro‌ with a configuration that includes 24 CPU cores (including 16 performance and eight efficiency cores), 76 graphics cores, and 192GB of memory. The ‌Mac Pro‌ is expected to be powered by the “M2 Ultra” and “‌M2‌ Extreme” chips with at least twice or four times the performance as the ‌M2‌ Max chip, expected to be announced alongside the updated MacBook Pros next year.

Gurman: New M2 iPad Pro Models to Be Announced ‘In a Matter of Days’

Apple will announce new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models in “a matter of days,” respected Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said today in his latest Power On newsletter.

The new 11-inch and 12.9-inch models, codenamed J617 and J620, will be the first update to the higher-end iPad since April 2021, where both models gained the M1 chip and a new 12.-9-inch mini-LED display. For their first update in a year and a half, the upcoming ‌iPad Pro‌ models are expected to gain the M2 Apple silicon chip, offering faster performance and possibly new charging capabilities.

For design, the new iPads will look like the current models, with no significant changes expected. Early rumors said that the smaller 11-inch model would gain a mini-LED display, currently only available on the larger 12.9-inch model, but that is no longer expected to happen.

The new ‌iPad Pro‌ models could also feature some form of MagSafe charging capabilities, as per previous reports. There is also the possibility the new ‌iPad Pro‌ models could feature reverse-wireless charging capabilities, allowing users to charge their iPhone or AirPods on the back of the ‌iPad‌.

Given the incremental update expected for the upcoming iPads, Apple is no longer planning an event for October. Apple is expected to launch the new iPads and updates to the Mac lineup through press releases and updates on its website.

Alongside the new ‌iPad Pro‌ models, Apple is also expected to release iPadOS 16 later this month. Unlike in past years, this year’s iPadOS and iOS updates were not released simultaneously. Instead, Apple delayed ‌iPadOS 16‌ until later in the fall to allow it more time to refine the update and work on Stage Manager. ‌Stage Manager‌ is a new multi-tasking and windowing system for specific ‌iPad‌ models that continues to face bugs, despite ‌iPadOS 16‌’s release in just a few weeks.

Gurman: Apple Planning to Show Ads in Maps App Starting Next Year

Apple plans to begin showing search ads in its Maps app on the iPhone starting next year, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

“I believe the engineering work is already underway to launch search ads in the Apple Maps app, and we should begin to see it be implemented sometime next year,” wrote Gurman, in the subscriber-only version of his “Power On” newsletter today.

Ads in the Apple Maps app would not be the traditional banner ads that you see on websites, but rather paid search results. For example, a fast food chain could pay Apple to appear near the top of the results when a user searches for “burgers” or “fries.” Many similar apps already offer search ads, including Google Maps, Waze, and Yelp.

Apple already displays search ads in the App Store, allowing developers to pay to promote their apps to users who search for relevant keywords. Apple is also planning to show ads in the App Store’s “Today” tab and in a new “You Might Also Like” section at the bottom of app listings, while banner ads are displayed in Apple’s News and Stocks apps.

Last week, Gurman said Apple is planning to significantly expand its advertising business over time. In his newsletter, he said that Apple’s advertising division is generating about $4 billion in revenue annually and that Apple’s advertising chief Todd Teresi wants to increase that figure to at least $10 billion per year over time.

Gurman: iOS 16 to include always-on display feature ahead of iPhone 14 Pro

In his latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says iOS 16 could finally include an always-on display feature for the future iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. Once rumored to arrive with the iPhone 13 Pro, it seems the next flagship phone from Apple could feature this long-awaited function.

Gurman writes in his newsletter:

“I’m told iOS 16 builds in future support for an always-on lock screen, something Apple was originally planning for last year’s iPhone 13. This would allow the iPhone to turn down the frame rate significantly on the lock screen and siplay quickly glanceable information – similar to newer Apple Watches.

The journalist says he was told that “the always-on display mode as an exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models (…) if the feature ever makes the cut.

To bring some context, back in December of 2020, a report indicated that an always-on mode could arrive thanks to the LTPO display.

“Apple is planning to apply LTPO TFT to higher-tier iPhone models launching next year. It has used the low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT process so far. An oxide TFT process will be added to become LPTO TFT.”

LTPO panels allow variable refresh rates. Dropping the refresh rate down to an extremely low rate means it uses a lot less power, which is what enables the always-on display on the Apple Watch Series 5.

With the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple finally added a 120Hz panel with a refresh rate, but it varies between 10Hz and 120Hz, different from the Apple Watch which can also update the refresh rate one time every minute.

The always-on display feature would also be a nice addition to the iPhone 14 Pro line, once a redesign is expected with a new hole-punch + pill cutout to replace the notch.

Alongside the always-on display feature, the rumored iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have the A16 Bionic chip and a 48-megapixel back camera.

Gurman: Apple could announce two new Macs at WWDC 2022

After announcing the new Mac Studio and Studio Display last month, Apple still has a few more Macs to introduce in 2022. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, in his latest edition of the Power On newsletter, two of them could be introduced at the WWDC 2022 keynote.

Gurman has been reporting for a few months that Apple has a great list of Macs to update in 2022. While he said the first batch would come in the first months of the year, Gurman also said a few more could land in the summer – which potentially can mean WWDC 2022.

Apple is gearing up to launch some new Macs in the next few months. What better place to do so than WWDC? That’s the same venue where Mac’s transition from Intel to Apple’s own chips was announced two years ago.

I’m told there are two new Macs coming around the middle of the year or early in the second half. One of those is likely to be the new MacBook Air.

If that’s the case, a few months after introducing the M1 Ultra chip and saying that the M1 family is now complete, Apple could be ready to introduce its first computer with the M2 chip, the MacBook Air. Rumors so far believe it will have a redesign, resembling the 24-inch iMac with white bezels and colorful options to choose from.

While it was first believed that this MacBook Air could feature a miniLED display, it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. In addition, this Mac could bring new ports, MagSafe compatibility, and a better FaceTime camera.

Gurman also writes about new Macs Apple is expected to announce this year:

Other models in the works include an updated Mac mini and 24-inch iMac, as well as a low-end MacBook Pro to replace the aging 13-inch model. And let’s not forget that the new Mac Pro and iMac Pro models are in development.

Which Mac do you want to see Apple announcing in 2022? Share your thoughts in the comment section below.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is setting the stage to unveil the “widest array of new hardware products in its history” this fall…

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman explains that he’s been told Apple is saving a number of its announcements for the fall. These announcements range from completely redesigned MacBook Air to a new iPad Pro and more:

To that end, I’m told that Apple is readying the widest array of new hardware products in its history this fall. That makes sense: My back-of-the-envelope list includes four new iPhones, a low-end MacBook Pro, an updated iMac, the new Mac Pro, a revamped MacBook Air, an AirPods Pro upgrade, three Apple Watches, a low-end iPad and iPad Pros.

Gurman also doubles down on his previous reporting that Apple will hold its first event of the year sometime in March or April, with the iPhone SE being one the products announced here. According to today’s report, we shouldn’t expect Apple to unveil its redesigned iPad Pro during the spring event. “Given the more significant changes in the pipeline for this year, I’d expect the new iPad to come later than the spring,” Gurman says.

With this in mind, Gurman expects Apple’s spring event to focus on the iPhone SE 3, a new iPad Air, and potentially a new higher-end Mac of some sort. “I’d imagine Apple wants to bring the M1 Pro chip to another Mac in the first half of this year. That could mean a higher-end Mac mini or iMac,” he writes.

Gurman: Apple planning redesigned iPad Pro, high-end iMac, new Mac Pro, more for 2022

Apple had a busy year in 2021, announcing the iPhone 13 lineup, new Apple Silicon-powered Macs, and more. Looking ahead to 2022, there’s still a lot to expect from the company. In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman breaks down everything he expects Apple to unveil in the new year.

In today’s newsletter, Gurman corroborates much of what has previously been reported about what to expect from Apple in 2022. Notably, he still says that Apple is planning a new iPad Pro design with support for wireless charging, as well as updates to the lower-end iPad Air and entry-level iPad.

Gurman also says that Apple has a redesigned MacBook Air in the works for 2022, alongside a “revamped, high-end iMac with Apple Silicon.” There’s also a new entry-level MacBook Pro, a new Mac Pro, and a new Mac mini in the works for next year.

For the Apple Watch, Gurman expects three new models, including an updated Apple Watch SE, an updated standard model, and a “ruggedized version aimed at extreme sports athletes.”

“2021 was a modest year for Apple product updates, but I’d expect a wider-range of new products in 2022. Let’s go down the list of what I expect to come next year,” Gurman says. Here’s the full breakdown of everything to expect from Apple in 2022, according to Gurman:

  • A new iPad Pro design with wireless charging, plus updates to the iPad Air and entry-level iPad.
  • A revamped, high-end iMac with Apple silicon to sit above the new 24-inch model.
  • An iPhone SE with 5G.
  • New AirPods Pro earbuds.
  • The biggest MacBook Air revamp in the product’s history, adding the M2 chip and a new design.
  • New versions of the Mac mini, entry-level MacBook Pro and a revamped Mac Pro with Apple silicon.
  • Of course, the iPhone 14 lineup.
  • Three fresh Apple Watches, including a new Apple Watch SE, an updated standard model, and a ruggedized version aimed at extreme sports athletes.
  • And, probably most significantly, the introduction of Apple’s first mixed augmented and virtual reality headset.

If all of this ends up panning out, it’s clear that Apple has quite a bit in the works for 2022. What are you most excited to see? Let us know down in the comments!

Apple Car Goes Full-Throttle Under Kevin Lynch With An ‘Ambitious And Aggressive Plan:’ Gurman – Apple (AAPL)

Apple Inc’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) car project has gone full-throttle, according to tech journalist Mark Gurman.

What Happened: Gurman pointed to the Apple Watch software chief Kevin Lynch leading the company’s car efforts in recent weeks and his push to accelerate the development of the electric vehicle.

“Now he’s pushing the team behind the project to accelerate its development, with an eye on debuting a car as early [as] 2025,” wrote Gurman in his weekly newsletter.

The Apple-focused journalist noted that Lynch wants the first version of the vehicle to be fully autonomous and have no steering wheel or pedal controls.

“It’s an ambitious and aggressive plan and certainly fascinating to follow,” wrote Gurman.

Why It Matters: Resurfaced rumors surrounding the so-called Apple car propelled the shares of the Tim Cook-led company into record territory last week.

Loup Ventures analyst Gene Munster put the chances of Apple eventually releasing a car at 50% and said it is likely more than five years away.

Although Apple has given itself a timeline of four years to release a car with the more advanced fully autonomous technology, should the iPhone maker not be able to meet its set deadline it could either delay the launch or release a vehicle with less advanced technology, as per a Bloomberg report.

This month, it was reported that Apple Car’s concept resembles Tesla Inc’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) Cybertruck.

Price Action: On Friday, Apple shares rose 1.7% to $160.55 in the regular session and gained 0.27% in the after-hours session.
