Texas 5-year-old shot dead, 8-year-old wounded when mom’s vehicle impacted by gunfire at a stop sign: police

A shooting in Houston, Texas, left a 5-year-old dead and an 8-year-old wounded when the vehicle they were riding in came under gunfire as it stopped at an intersection early Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Houston Police Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said officers received several phone calls before 1 a.m. about a shooting in the 13300 block of Northborough Drive.

They arrived at the scene but did not see any witnesses, suspects or complainants, Hatcher said.

Further investigation determined a mother was driving in the area with her two kids and had stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when her vehicle came under gunfire.

The woman then “left the location immediately once she realized her children were shot and immediately took them to the hospital,” Hatcher said.

Approximately 15 minutes after responding to the scene, police received additional phone calls regarding two children arriving at an area hospital with gunshot wounds.

Hatcher said a 5-year-old was shot and died of the injuries, while an 8-year-old also shot is expected to make a full recovery.

“It is unclear if the complainants were the intended targets of the shooting or if there was something else going on in this area at the time,” Hatcher said. “We do not know a motive. We do not have suspect descriptions other than potentially two Black males in a dark-colored vehicle. We are looking for surveillance footage out here and are gathering evidence.”

Based on information from a few witnesses, Hatcher said police believe a dark-colored vehicle, possibly with two occupants, was driving westbound on Rush Street, while the complainant’s vehicle was traveling northbound on Northborough. The occupants of the vehicle driving westbound started discharging a firearm or potentially multiple firearms.

The complainant’s vehicle was stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when it was impacted by the gunshots, Hatcher said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Houston police’s homicide division at 713-308-3600 or crime stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

“At this time, I ask that if anyone knows information, please come forward, and please continue to pray for the family of the deceased child and the injured eight-year-old,” Hatcher said.

15-Year-Old Is Killed and 3 Are Shot in Gunfire at D.C. Music Festival

A 15-year-old boy was killed and three adults, including a police officer, were shot when gunfire erupted Sunday night at an unauthorized music event in a Washington, D.C., neighborhood known for its nightlife, the authorities said.

The Metropolitan Police Department had shut down the event, known as Moechella, a free street festival near the city’s culturally storied corner of 14th and U Streets Northwest, after violence earlier in the evening, including a fight between attendees, the police said.

As police and emergency medical workers cleared the area to treat people injured while fleeing a disturbance, “several individuals were shot,” Chief Robert J. Contee III of the Metropolitan Police Department said at a news conference late Sunday.

Chief Contee said that the officer who was shot was expected to recover and that the two other adults were in stable condition. He did not say whether a suspect or suspects were in custody. The circumstances of the shooting remained unclear late Sunday, but he said that police officers did not fire their weapons.

Chief Contee said he wanted to ensure that people would be held accountable for holding events without a permit.

“This is one of the reasons we don’t want unpermitted events taking place in our city,” he said. “Unfortunately, things like this can happen when you have the wrong mix of people, or people who introduce firearms into a situation.”

The chief expressed frustration at the number of illegal firearms in the area, noting that police officers had discovered several such weapons earlier in the evening.

“Illegal firearms in the hands of people who should not have them make events like this unsafe for people who just want to enjoy the beautiful weather, who want to enjoy Father’s Day, who want to enjoy our city,” he said.

The shooting occurred at a festival The Washington City Paper described as “a free, go-go band-led event full of Black cultural spirit and anti-gentrification passion.” The newspaper said the event’s name blends slang for friend, “moe,” with the name of the music festival Coachella.

An event organizer, Justin Johnson, who is also a rapper and an activist known as Yaddiya, could not immediately be reached for comment.

“We’re doing something for the people that’s inclusive,” he told the City Paper. “I don’t really feel like it’s a Juneteenth event if you’re charging a lot for it.”

The shooting unfolded in the aftermath of a series of high-profile gun killings, including two massacres in May: one at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 children and two teachers dead; and a racist attack at a Buffalo supermarket in which a white gunman killed 10 Black people.

Earlier this month, a brawl turned a packed Philadelphia street into a scene of terror after two men pulled out guns and began firing wildly at each other. By the time the gunfire ended, three people were dead and 12 more were injured.

Vestavia Hills, Alabama, church shooting: 2 dead, another wounded after gunfire near Birmingham

A suspect, who was not identified, is in custody, said Capt. Shane Ware with the Vestavia Hills Police Department.

The shooting was reported at St. Stephens Episcopal Church at about 6:22 p.m. CT (7:22 p.m. ET), he said.

Ware said the one person was being treated for an “unknown injury” at a hospital.

According to the church calendar, an event called the “Boomers Potluck” was scheduled at the same time the shooting took place but it wasn’t clear from the media briefing whether the violence occurred there.

Ware didn’t take questions at any of the three media briefings on the shooting.

“If anybody needs to pass along any information concerning this investigation to the Vestavia Hill Police Department and our detectives, I need them to call 205-9780140,” he said.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey sent her condolences.

“I am glad to hear the shooter is in custody,” Ivey said. “This should never happen — in a church, in a store, in the city, or anywhere. We continue to closely monitor the situation.”

Philadelphia shooting: 3 killed, 11 injured in South Street gunfire

At least three people were killed and 11 others hit by gunfire Saturday night, said Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace.

Officers patrolling the South Street area heard gunfire shortly before midnight and observed “several active shooters shooting into the crowd,” Pace said.

One officer was “within about 10 to 15 yards” of one of the shooters and fired at the suspect, Pace said. “We’re uncertain whether he was struck or not, but the officer was able to get that individual to drop his gun and flee.”

Two handguns were recovered at the scene, including one with an extended magazine, Pace said. But as of early Sunday, no arrests had been made.

The identities of the two men and one woman killed have not been released.

The violence in Philadelphia marked the sixth mass shooting in the US just this weekend, according to the non-profit organization Gun Violence Archive.

“The surge in gun violence that we’ve seen across the nation — and here in Philadelphia — makes me not just heartbroken, but angry,” Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said Sunday.

“Once again, we see lives senselessly lost and those injured in yet another horrendous, brazen and despicable act of gun violence.”

Hundreds of people were in the area

South Street is “known for being a corridor of entertainment” with multiple bars and restaurants, Pace said.

“There were hundreds of individuals just enjoying South Street, as they do every single weekend, when this shooting broke out.”

The motives for the shootings remain unclear.

There have been at least 239 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. CNN and the archive define a mass shooting as one in which at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

‘It’s time for real action’

The mayor said he’s fed up with senseless gun violence and called for stronger laws to help prevent violent people from getting guns.

“We cannot accept continued violence as a way of life in our country. Until we address the availability and ease of access to firearms, we will always be fighting an uphill battle,” said Kenney.

“I will continue to fight to protect our communities and urge others to advocate for stronger laws that keep guns out of the hands of violent individuals.”

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner called for boycotting National Rifle Association donations and lobbyists.

After the “terrible crimes last night on South Street tell our Pennsylvania legislators it’s time for real action,” Krasner tweeted Sunday.

“Boycott NRA lobbyists, boycott NRA donations, and bring real common sense gun regulation to Pennsylvania. Now.”

CNN’s Kiely Westhoff contributed to this report.

San Bernardino shooting: 9 shot, 1 fatally, after gunfire erupts among large crowd of partygoers

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) — One person was killed and eight others were wounded in a shooting late Friday night involving a large crowd that had gathered for a party in San Bernardino, authorities said.

The gunfire began just before midnight inside THA Blue Flame, a hookah bar near the intersection of Palm and Highland avenues, during a party, according to investigators.

The shooting then continued across the street, a witness told ABC7. The witness, who asked not to be identified by name, said she was at a nearby gas station when she saw teenagers who appeared to be gathered for a graduation party. She said at one point a car pulled into the gas station and a person opened fire from inside the vehicle, shooting two girls.

“When everything happened, we just hear gunshots and a lot of kids run,” the witness said. “There was a lot of kids running, you know, calling their moms, and I was just like standing there, like, what can I do?”

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members later said their 20-year-old grandson, later identified by police as Allen Gresham Jr., was killed. Gresham Jr. was a San Bernardino resident.

The grandmother says her grandson had attended the party after receiving a flyer.

Police are calling that party an “unpermitted special event,” and say some type of argument occurred between at least two individuals inside the event, and “multiple gunshots were exchanged.”

“The San Bernardino Police Department will be working to not only identify and arrest the suspects, but to shut down the business whose illegal activities led to the shooting,” said San Bernardino Police Chief David Green in a statement.

Several of the wounded transported themselves to hospitals, where they were treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.

The incident prompted a massive response from the San Bernardino Police Department, whose investigators remained at the scene Saturday morning. At one point, the agency requested help from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department after officials say responding officers were “confronted by a large hostile crowd.”

“Upon arrival, officers encountered a large crowd and learned that they were in the area attending a party,” police said in a statement. The number of wounded victims was initially given as nine before it was revised down.

Police say not all the victims were intentionally targeted by the gunman.

Police detained two individuals while attempting to secure the scene initially, one of which was arrested for being in possession of a loaded stolen firearm, and the other for outstanding warrants, the San Bernardino Police Department said. It was not immediately cleared if those detained were suspects in the shooting.

A description of the suspect or suspects was not available.

The motive for the shooting remained under investigation, authorities said.

Gunfire from robbery during drug deal hits 2 ‘unintended targets’ near Theater District, including a ‘Moulin Rouge!’ stagehand

Stray bullets from a robbery during a drug deal wounded two people in the Loop over the weekend, including a longtime stagehand who was scheduled to work on a performance of “Moulin Rouge!” that was later canceled, police and witnesses said.

After the 5 p.m. shooting in an alley in the 100 block of North Wabash Street, the Sunday evening performance of the musical at the nearby Nederlander Theatre was called off.

Ryan Bush, a stagehand at the Nederlander, said in an interview with the Sun-Times Monday that he was with his co-worker when the “frightening” incident unfolded.

“My buddy ended up getting in the crossfire,” he said.

Police said both victims were “unintended targets” of the shooting, which apparently stemmed from a drug deal between two groups of people at a nearby Taco Bell, police said. An argument broke out and someone “implied a weapon” and robbed the others, officials said.

The victims of that robbery then chased the offenders into an alley near the Chicago Theatre.

“The people who were robbed took out a firearm and started discharging at the individuals who took something from them,” Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at a Monday news conference.

Bush said he and his co-worker had gone out to grab dinner between matinee and evening performances at the Nederlander when they heard gunfire and ducked.

“There was two guys running down the alley, running westbound toward State Street, and somebody was shooting at them,” he told the Sun-Times.

But Bush’s fellow stagehand — a 55-year-old from Elmhurst — couldn’t avoid the bullets and was struck in the right ear, police reports said. Bush said the bullet also pierced his friend’s neck.

Another witness, a bartender from the Chicago Theatre, also told officers that he saw three males running through the alley when he heard a pair of “pops,” leading the bartender to hide between trash cans, according to the reports. He then saw someone fire a handgun twice.

The second gunshot victim, a 27-year-old man from Gold Coast, was found with a wound to the hand, the reports state. He told officers he was walking with his girlfriend when he was struck.

Both victims were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition, police said. Neither saw the shooter, who later ditched his jacket near the State/Lake Red Line stop, according to a police report.

No arrests were reported. Deenihan told reporters that police were reviewing video on where “both groups went.”

Bush, a longtime stagehand who lives in Northwest Indiana, said it was a relief to get a text message from his co-worker early Monday saying he was “doing better” after being discharged from Northwestern.

“That’s my No. 1 guy there. He’s a great guy, stage hand, been in the business for 30-plus years,” Bush said, adding that his co-worker is a grandfather “just looking to retire.”

The shooting wasn’t specifically given as the reason for canceling Sunday evening’s performance of “Moulin Rouge!” An official statement attributed it to a “disturbance.”

Police said they deployed additional resources to the Theater District.

“We will continue to monitor the area and work closely with the Cook County sheriff’s police to enhance safety in our Theater District,” the department said in a statement.

Mississippi Mudbug Festival shooting: At least 1 dead, 5 injured after gunfire breaks out

One person died and five others were hurt. The person who died may have been shot by an officer after “there was an exchange of gunfire between at least 2 to 3 individuals in and around a vehicle,” Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones said.

Those injured in the shooting “appear to be stable,” the sheriff said in a post on Facebook.

Several law enforcement officers from different agencies were working the event and responded when shots were fired around 10 p.m., the sheriff said.

“We believe one of the law enforcement personnel discharged his weapon, and we believe at this particular time that the victim that is deceased is possibly due to the officer-involved shooting,” Jones said at a news conference.

“We believe that individual that is deceased was actively involved in the incident that was reported regarding the gunfire and regarding the several shots that were fired.”

Jones declined to identify the officer involved and his agency. He said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the investigation.

The bureau said it’s investigating the incident at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds. “Upon completing their investigation, agents will share their findings with the local District Attorney’s Office,” it said in a written statement.

After the shooting, at least two people were detained for questioning, Jones said.

Officers located at least one vehicle, two rifles and at least one pistol they believe are related to the shooting.

“At this time, we do not know what the motive is or exactly what happened,” Jones said, noting the investigation is ongoing.

“We will find out exactly what happened. We will find out who’s all involved, and they should be held accountable and responsible for this very reckless incident,” Jones said.

The Mississippi Mudbug Festival began Wednesday and is slated to run through Sunday, according to the Jackson Convention & Visitors Bureau. The festival features live entertainment along with crawfish cooking and eating contests and amusement rides.
This was the second year the event was held by the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce, the department’s website states.

Jones said it was unclear whether the festival will be open Sunday.

CNN has reached out to the Mississippi Fairgrounds and Mississippi’s Department of Agriculture and Commerce for comment.

Chicago shooting: Godfrey Hotel guest exchanges gunfire with would-be robber in River North: CPD

CHICAGO (WLS) — A hotel guest traded gunfire with a would-be robber in River North Sunday night, Chicago police said.

Police said a man was staying at the Godfrey in the 100-block of West Huron Street when just after 11:30 p.m. an unknown person knocked on his door.

The 53-year-old victim opened the door and a man forced his way into the room, took out a gun and demanded the victim’s property, police said.

The suspect then began firing shots at the victim and the victim returned fire, police said.

The would-be robber fled the scene and the victim was left with a graze wound to the head, police said.

The victim was treated at the scene by the Chicago Fire Department and refused further medical attention.

Some people staying at the hotel said they’re shaken up by the violence. Nate Montgomery was in his room just a few doors down when he heard the shots.

“I was lying in bed just watching TV and I heard kind of a ‘tap tap tap tap tap’…and then I heard some loud voices and it definitely alerted me,” Montgomery said. “I did not realize it was gunshots to be honest with you.”

Many hotel guests had no idea anything had happened.

“I was very shocked to find out because nobody said anything,” said hotel guest Athena Belluso. “Like I came down into the lobby and nothing was said.”

Meanwhile, hotel general manager Todd Van Winkle made some brief remarks to assure guests the hotel is safe and this was an isolated incident.

“The safety and security of the hotel’s guests and employees are always a top priority for us,” Van Winkle said. “The hotel team is fully cooperating with the Chicago Police Department in their ongoing investigation.”

Police recovered a weapon from the scene. No one is in custody.

Latest news on Ukraine-Russia War: Kyiv rocked by explosions, gunfire attacks as Kremlin forces near

Ukrainian lawmaker and tech executive Kira Rudik repeated her intent to bear arms against Russian troops entering Kyiv during a television interview early Saturday local time, stressing that the country’s leaders should show citizens how to act in support of Ukrainian troops.

“If you would have asked me like three days ago about me bearing arms, I would tell you like definite no, and we would have argument,” she said in an appearance on MSNBC. “And now I have Kalashnikov.”

Her remarks came after she posted a short statement on Friday, showing an image of her holding an automatic rifle.

“I learn to use #Kalashnikov and prepare to bear arms. It sounds surreal as just a few days ago it would never come to mind,” she wrote on Twitter. “Our #women will protect our soil the same way as our #men. Go #Ukraine!” She had earlier said in a CNN interview that nearby explosions were rattling her windows in Kyiv.

Ukraine has been urging its civilians to resist Russian forces in various ways such as manufacturing molotov cocktails, which are generally glass bottles filled with flammable material that function like hand grenades. Around 18,000 weapons have been distributed in the Kyiv region, according to the Ukrainian government.
