Italian ambassador died in gun battle in DRC, not execution, prosecutor says

Italian ambassador Luca Attanasio and Italian carabiniere, or paramilitary police officer, Vittorio Iacovacci, died on Monday after their car was attacked as they traveled in a UN convoy in the eastern part of the Central African country. A third man, Congolese driver Moustapha Milambo, was also killed.

The bodies of the two Italian men arrived at Rome’s Ciampino Airport overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, and were met by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi. The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, said Wednesday the country had sent a team to eastern DRC to investigate the incident.

“At the moment all the facts aren’t clear,” said Pioletti. “We still are examining, we are dealing with an area where there are different armed groups, different ethnicities, so we cannot attribute this attack to one of these groups, it is still too early.

“What we know for certain is that it was not an execution, it was a gun fight, the ambassador and the carabiniere were hit by two bullets each,” added Pioletti following autopsies on the two men completed on Wednesday.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said in a statement that Milambo also died in the attack. Four other WFP staff who were in the group are safe and accounted for, according to the UN agency.

An armed group stopped the convoy and forced the passengers to disembark before an exchange of gunfire, said the WFP.

Iacovacci died after a bullet struck him near his heart while Attanasio was shot twice in the abdomen, said Pioletti. Attanasio died on the way to the hospital, which was 50 minutes away.

It is not yet clear whether the bullets that killed the Italians were fired by the attackers or the government military defending them, added Pioletti.

The route was on a road previously designated safe for travel without a security team, according to the WFP.

Rutshuru is just over two hours’ drive from Goma. The road out of the regional capital has been insecure for years with a variety of armed groups operating in the area.

There is a heavy UN peacekeeping presence in the region, and UN convoys need security clearance to travel outside of Goma.

With the identity of the attackers still unknown, the motive for the attack is uncertain. A political motive has not been fully ruled out, said Pioletti, but he added that a kidnapping was more likely.

CNN’s David McKenzie, Nicola Ruotolo and Ingrid Formanek contributed to this report.

Louisiana cops release chilling video of deadly gun store shooting

Louisiana police on Monday released surveillance footage of an armed robbery at a gun store and shooting range that left three people dead, and another two injured.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office showed edited clips at a Monday press conference of the deadly robbery unfolding.

The Saturday shootout that left three people dead and wounded two more at a Louisiana gun store and shooting range began when a customer refused to unload his weapon, an operator of the store said.

The Jefferson Parish coroner said 47-year-old Herbert “Noah” Fischbach, of Jefferson, 59-year-old Veronica Billiot, of Belle Chasse, and 27-year-old Joshua Jamal Williams, of New Orleans were killed in the shootout Saturday afternoon at Jefferson Gun Outlet in Metairie.

Sheriff Joseph Lopinto previously said the shooter initially struck two people inside, and then several other people — whether employees or store customers — opened fire on the shooter, both inside and outside of the building.

Lopinto said two other people also were hit by gunfire and were hospitalized in stable condition. Michael Mayer, an executive at the gun outlet, identified Williams as the shooter.

He told The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate that Williams entered the store in the New Orleans suburb on Saturday with a loaded firearm and was asked to unload by a compliance officer.

Mayer said Williams “became agitated by the request and pulled his gun out of his pants and started firing.” He said employees and customers returned fire and “eliminated the threat.”

Mayer also said he was limited in what he could tell news outlets as the investigation is still ongoing.

Herbert Fischbach’s wife Nancy also confirmed that he was one of the three killed. She said Fischbach was a special effects specialist and an armorer, who supervised weapon usage on film sets.

Nancy Fischbach said her husband had been working at the gun shop because of COVID-19 restrictions on the film industry. She believes he died helping people inside the store.

Jefferson Gun Outlet bloodbath shatters 3 families as JPSO continues sorting through evidence | Crime/Police

One was a mother and grandmother there to pick up a gun she had ordered for protection.

Another was a firearms enthusiast working one of his two jobs. The third was there for target practice.

All of them were killed inside Jefferson Gun Outlet in Metairie on Saturday afternoon when an argument over a purported violation of a safety rule devolved into a shootout that sent Veronica Billiot, Herbert “Noah” Fischbach and Joshua Williams to the morgue and two others to the hospital with injuries, officials and loved ones said Sunday.

Details about those who were slain during the bloodshed at the gun shop and indoor shooting range at 1617 Airline Drive emerged a day later, as Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators combed through surveillance video, ballistics evidence and witness statements to reconstruct what happened amid the carnage.

Veronica Billiot had gone into Jefferson Gun Outlet in Metairie on Saturday afternoon to pick up a gun she had ordered for protection when an …

Investigators are scrutinizing a key exchange. Williams, 27, brought a pistol with an extended magazine into the shop and argued with staff when they told him to unload his weapon to comply with a rule prohibiting patrons from having a loaded gun when not in a booth at the target range, multiple law enforcement sources told The Times-Picayune | New Orleans Advocate.

Detectives suspect things escalated so drastically that Williams — who had gone there to use the range, according to relatives — fired a warning round into the ceiling.

The sources said investigators believe Williams then fatally shot Fischbach, 47, the shop clerk. Williams and 59-year-old Billiot — who was there to collect a gun she had ordered ahead of time, according to her family — were then mortally wounded while armed employees and customers in the store began firing.

A 27-year-old New Orleans man sparked the gun battle that left him and two others dead inside of Jefferson Gun Outlet in Metairie on Saturday …

Williams died after running out to the parking lot, which investigators would later find was littered with spent gun cartridges. Billiot died just inside the front entrance of the store, whose glass front doors were shattered. Two other people were injured during the gunbattle and taken to the hospital, though their wounds were not thought to be life-threatening.

Jefferson Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich released the names of Williams, Fischbach and Billiot on Sunday morning. But little new information was available about who at the store fatally shot Williams and Billiot, with investigators still working to establish exactly which of the myriad weapons at the scene were discharged and whom they may have struck.

Whatever the case, three families spent Sunday grieving the devastation wrought by a bloodbath that within hours had made the national news.

Linda Billiot said all indications are that her older sister Veronica “had no clue whatsoever what was going on” when the argument involving Williams started.

“She was completely innocent,” Linda Billiot said during a telephone interview Sunday.

With her voice breaking at times, Linda Billiot remembered how Veronica Billiot stepped up to help raise her two younger sisters because their mother was not in the picture while they grew up in Algiers Point.

She made her living as the military housing property manager at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans in Belle Chasse, Linda Billiot said. Besides her sisters, Veronica Billiot had also raised three children and had six grandchildren.

Linda Billiot said Veronica Billiot’s son was horrified to hear of the quintuple shooting at Jefferson Gun Outlet, knowing his mom had gone there to pick up a weapon she had ordered for self-defense about the time the gunbattle had erupted. Soon, officials confirmed that his mom was among the dead, Linda Billiot said.

“It’s shocking — I’m not processing it,” Linda Billiot said. “I haven’t slept since I learned what happened.”

A 47-year-old gun and film special effects enthusiast and loving husband and father was among those killed Saturday during a shootout that eru…

The president of New Orleans Navy Housing and Patrician Management — Billiot’s employer — said she had “led a full and successful life both at home and work” and was “dedicated to her employees.”

“She served our company and the military families at Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Belle Chasse for 15 years,” Patrician Management president Alex Lewis said in an emailed statement. “She was a tireless worker with a passion for excellence along with a deep respect for our military families.”

Fischbach’s widow remembered her husband as a devoted partner and father with ambitions to climb the film industry’s career ladder. He worked as a special effects specialist and an armorer, who supervises the proper and safe use of all weapons on a film set.

Because of coronavirus restrictions on the film industry, Fischbach had been spending more time working his other job at Jefferson Gun Outlet, said Nancy Fischbach, his wife of 14 years.

Yet he also made time to be a devoted husband, such as when he planned a day full of surprises such as wine, pastries and other treats for their recent anniversary.

“He was amazing,” Fischbach said of her husband, with whom she was raising a 13-year-old son, Ethan. “Words can’t describe the person he was. He was so genuine, so real, so true. He was my soulmate.”

Williams’ family, for their part, pushed back against statements that he was to blame for the violence at Jefferson Gun Outlet.

A screenshot of a Facebook post from a woman identifying herself as the mother of Joshua Williams, 27.

He went to the store with his brother and some children, a relative of Williams said Saturday. That relative, who declined to be named, doubted Williams would have shown up spoiling for a gun fight at a place he knew to be frequented by off-duty law enforcement officers and ex-military personnel.

Family members noted Williams has gone to other gun ranges in the region and never had a problem. Also, a woman on social media who said she was Williams’ mother posted a message on social media saying he didn’t go into the range shooting and that he was fired at by employees of the business.

“My son … was MURDERED,” wrote the woman, who identified herself as Trudy Edwards.

A knock on the front door of Williams’ home address went unanswered Sunday.

Jefferson Gun Outlet principal Michael Mayer jumped to the defense of Fischbach and his other employees on Sunday.

Mayer said he had to limit his comments because the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and other officials are still conducting investigations, but he issued a statement accusing Williams of assailing his store’s employees after they asked him to unload his handgun.

“Our store was attacked by Joshua Williams,” Mayer’s statement said, in part. “One customer as well as one employee perished in the (ensuing) gun battle. Joshua Williams, the gunman, is also dead.”

Canada expected to pass sweeping gun legislation that includes banning handguns

Canada is expected to pass sweeping gun reform legislation, including a measure that allows municipalities to ban handguns.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin TrudeauJustin Pierre James TrudeauBiden’s treatment of energy firms is no way to run a healthy economy Harris speaks with Trudeau in first call with foreign leader as VP Trudeau announces new restrictions on international travel to Canada MORE announced the new measures on Tuesday, a sweeping package that builds on a ban of more than 1,500 assault-style firearms.

Trudeau said at a news conference on Tuesday that the country would move forward with a buyback program “in the coming months.”

The proposals include the Canadian government supporting municipalities that restrict storage and transportation of handguns within their boundaries. Breaching these bylaws would carry a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a possible revocation.

Another proposal would create “red flag” and “yellow flag” laws that would make it easier for concerned friends and relatives to petition courts for the immediate removal of a firearm or to ask a chief firearms officer to suspend and review a person’s license for firearms.

In addition, the bill would increase penalties for firearms trafficking and smuggling from 10 years to 14 years in prison, as well as allow the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and local law enforcement to share licensing and registration data to investigate or prosecute firearms trafficking offenses.

“You can’t fight gun violence or any violence on just one front,” Trudeau said. “You can’t fight it without addressing its root causes.”

The measures come as gun reform measures that were passed in June 2019 are expected to take effect. Those measures include requiring sellers to verify a firearms license before a purchase and expanded background checks that consider an applicant’s lifetime history.

Machine Gun Kelly says on Instagram he wears Megan Fox’s blood around his neck

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox celebrated their first Valentine’s Day together in unusual fashion Sunday.

The musician, born Colson Baker, shared an Instagram post that suggested he carries some of Fox’s blood in a necklace.

“i wear your blood around my neck,” wrote Kelly alongside an Instagram gallery that included emojis such as a red rose, a blood drop and a knife. “My bloody valentine,” he added.

The gallery included never-before-seen photos of the couple and a photo of a glass vial with what appeared to be a drop of blood hanging from a small chain.

The gesture is reminiscent of Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie, who had a relationship in the early 2000s.

Machine Gun Kelly: Says he ‘waited for eternity’ to find Megan Fox

As Thornton explained to The Hollywood Reporter, the duo wore matching clear lockets as Jolie “thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck just like you wear your son or daughter’s baby hair.”

Fox did not reciprocate on the blood theme Sunday, but wrote a haunting love ode to Kelly on Instagram. Next to a playful photo gallery of the two, she wrote:

there goes my heart
manifest outside of my body
draped in the towering silhouette of a most unusually handsome boy

magical and haunted
kinetic and tortured
ethereal and dangerous
cosmic
lawless
eternal
creative genius

the journey will likely be perilous
but there is no destination without him

The two starred together in Kelly’s music video “Bloody Valentine.” When Kelly announced the relationship in July he wrote of Fox, that he “waited for eternity to find you again…”

Megan Fox Praises Machine Gun Kelly Post-SNL—and No One Else

Megan Fox is making no secret of her appreciation for Machine Gun Kelly‘s recent stint on Saturday Night Live, even if it comes at the expense of the show’s previous musical guests.

After her boyfriend made his debut on the long-running NBC sketch-comedy series by performing his tunes “Lonely” and “My Ex’s Best Friend” for the Saturday, Jan. 30 episode, Megan took to Instagram on Jan. 31 to offer high praise. She also shared a carousel of photos taken during the exciting week.

“SNL week,” the 34-year-old actress captioned the post. “Best performance that show has ever seen.” She added a head-exploding emoji, followed by a broken-heart one.

Certainly, her message was well-intentioned, as this is a very supportive sentiment to express. That said, given that SNL is known for showcasing some of the industry’s most iconic and beloved musicians over the course of its 46 seasons, this caption might make for some awkward moments if she ever hangs out with any singers in the near future.

Machine Gun Kelly sure made a noticeable exit on this week’s “Saturday Night Live.”

When the actor finished delivering his message, Kelly excitedly tried to pick up his famous “SNL” pal, Pete Davidson, but quickly lost his balance and the pair fell off the not-so-high stage.

“SNL” cast member Bowen Chen appears to look on at the scene in shock as he walked in the pair’s direction. Other cast and crew who were nearby were in stitches about Kelly and Davidson’s spill.

Capitol Police investigating after congressman discovered carrying a gun when attempting to go on the House floor

Rep. Andy Harris, of Maryland, set off a metal detector outside the House floor on Thursday and an officer soon discovered it was because he was carrying a concealed gun on his side, a Capitol official told CNN. The officer sent Harris away, prompting him to ask fellow Republican Rep. John Katko, of New York, to hold his weapon.

According to a press pool report, Katko refused to hold the gun for Harris, saying that he did not have a license. Harris then left the area and returned moments later, walking onto the House floor without setting off the magnetometer.

The Capitol official confirmed to CNN that Harris did not enter the House floor with a weapon. Harris’ office did not immediately return a request for comment.

The Capitol Police officer who saw the gun informed his superiors and the department is investigating the matter, a Capitol Police source familiar with the matter told CNN.

Firearms are banned from Congress except for members, who are granted certain exemptions under a 1967 regulation from the Capitol Police Board, a source confirmed to CNN. Members of Congress are able to carry firearms in the halls of Congress and on Capitol grounds as long as they have Washington licenses and they carry ammunition separately, the source added. Under no circumstances are lawmakers allowed to bring firearms onto the House floor.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, of New York, told CNN’s Chris Cuomo on Thursday night that “I think a very considerable amount, a lot of members” of the House “still don’t yet feel safe around other members of Congress,” slamming Harris for the incident.

“The moment you bring a gun onto the House floor in violation of rules, you put everyone around you in danger. It is irresponsible, it is reckless, but beyond that it is the violation of rules,” she said.

“You are openly disobeying the rules that we have established as a community, which means that you cannot be trusted to be held accountable to what we’ve decided as a community. And so I don’t really care what they say their intentions are, I care what the impact of their actions are, and the impact is to put all 435 members of Congress in danger.”

Ocasio-Cortez asserted that Harris “tried to hand off his gun to another member who didn’t have a license, and any responsible gun owner knows that you don’t just hand off your gun to another individual, you have to clear it, et cetera.”

“That just goes to show, it doesn’t matter what your intention is if you are irresponsible, if you are trying to break rules, if you’re trying to sneak a firearm onto the floor of the House,” she added. “I don’t care if you accidentally set it off, I don’t care if you intentionally set it off, I don’t care if you don’t set it off at all, you are endangering the lives of members of Congress. And it is absolutely outrageous that we even have to have this conversation.”

The metal detectors were installed last week in the wake of the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, which left five dead, including a Capitol Police officer. While lawmakers from both parties have been annoyed by the long lines the detectors have created during votes, Republicans in particular have complained vociferously and, in some cases, ignored them.

The metal detectors were installed after multiple House Democrats told CNN they were worried about some of their Republican colleagues and after multiple conversations about the need for every member of Congress and their guests to start going through metal detectors, CNN previously reported.

Since the detectors were installed, there have been very few votes on the House floor, so members are still getting used to the new measures.

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado, who filmed a campaign advertisement vowing to carry her handgun around Capitol Hill prior to arriving in Washington, was also involved in a standoff with Capitol Police at the newly installed metal detectors when trying to get on the floor January 12.

On that same night, GOP Reps. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and Steve Womack of Arkansas yelled at Capitol Police when they were forced to go through the detectors. Womack shouted, “I was physically restrained,” and Mullin said, “It’s my constitutional right” to walk through and “they cannot stop me.”

Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Biggs, an Arizona Republican, told reporters on January 12, as he passed through the metal detectors to get to the House floor, “This is crap right here. You can put that down. This is the stupidest thing.”

Even some Democrats have been unhappy with the extra security because it has led to longer lines and members being forced to be within 6 feet of one another.

“I’m more likely to die of Covid because I got it from a colleague than I am to die because a colleague shoots me,” Rep. Filemon Vela, a Texas Democrat, told CNN last week.

After the initial criticism from lawmakers, and reports that some refused to stop for Capitol Police after setting off the magnetometers, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi proposed a new rule on January 13, imposing stiff fines on members who refused to follow the new security measures: $5,000 for the first offense and $10,000 for the second offense. The new rule has not been passed yet and will be considered when floor votes resume in the House in February.

CNN’s Caroline Kelly contributed to this report.
