Australian Open men’s singles semifinals: A shot at history

Even before he hit his first ball at this year’s Australian Open, Rafael Nadal knew he had an open door to set the men’s record for most career Grand Slam singles titles.

So far he hasn’t let it close.

Nadal plays Matteo Berrettini in one semifinal on Friday at Melbourne Park, knowing he’s potentially two match wins from a 21st major title. He’s tied for the record of 20 with Roger Federer, who is recovering from right knee surgery, and Novak Djokovic, who was deported from Australia on the eve of the tournament following an 11-day visa saga over his decision not to be vaccinated for COVID-19.

In the other semifinal, Daniil Medvedev plays Stefanos Tsitsipas in a rematch of their 2021 Australian Open semifinal. Medvedev won last year’s semifinal, then lost to Djokovic in the final.

After Nadal’s tough five-set win over Denis Shapovalov on Tuesday, he looked to take away some of the pressure of that 21st major.

Boston Red Sox make history as first team to hit three grand slams in postseason series

BOSTON — The 2021 Red Sox are turning Boston into Slam City.

The Red Sox padded their lead against the Houston Astros in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series with a Kyle Schwarber homer that scored Christian Arroyo, Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez to put Boston up 6-0 in the second inning.

Schwarber’s grand slam was Boston’s third of the postseason and the series, making the Red Sox the first team since the 1998 Atlanta Braves to hit three in a postseason — and the first to do so in a single series.

Prior to the playoffs, Boston had only three grand slams throughout the whole regular season.

Monday night also marked the first time the Red Sox hit three grand slams in a two-game span, with the last team to accomplish the feat being the New York Yankees in August 2011.

The Red Sox have hit 18 homers in eight games this postseason. The only team with more homers through the first eight games of a postseason was the 2004 Astros.

Monday’s grand slam registered as the second time in Schwarber’s career that he homered against three different opponents in a single postseason, with the first time coming in 2015.

Boston now has 10 hits in six consecutive games, the longest streak within a postseason all-time.
