Fat Joe Says He Deserved To Win 2017 Grammy Over Chance The Rapper – VIBE.com

Fat Joe recently got candid about his 2017 Grammy loss to Chance the Rapper, making it known that he still believes he should’ve won.

During an interview with GQ led by Elliott Wilson, Joey Crack revealed how he felt losing to Chance’s “No Problem” for the Best Rap Performance at the 2017 Grammy Awards, and disclosed why he felt “All the Way Up” was the clear victor.

The Loyalty rapper claimed that the Academy wasn’t in touch with the culture and that he couldn’t even remember the name of the Chicago artist’s record that beat them.

“I should have won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance 2017. Chance is a cool guy. But the Grammy should have come my way. “All the Way Up” was bigger,” Fat Joe insisted. “Not only that, if people understood the culture, Remy and I were like Robin Hood and Cinderella. They could have done the ‘hood a favor and given “All the Way Up,” the f**kin’ Grammy. They gave it to Chance the Rapper—and for what? I’m not going to be disrespectful, but they gave it to him for a record I don’t even know no more.”

Joseph Antonio Cartagena continued, throwing the Black Eyed Peas into his argument, who beat him and Remy’s “Lean Back” with “Let’s Get It Started” at the 2005 Grammys.

“This is my point. I don’t even know what he beat us with. Do you understand? Same thing happened to us with “Lean Back.” We lost Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in 2005 to, what’s these guys? What’s the guy with the girl, Fergie?”

Joe’s memoir, The Book of Jose, was released on Tuesday (Nov. 15) and is the most profound examination of the emcee’s life thus far.

The memoir shares stories about his close relationship with Big Pun, his intense beef with 50 Cent, a lost Jay-Z track, his time in jail, and more. The Book of Jose is available wherever books are sold.

Fat Joe Says He Should’ve Won Grammy Over Chance The Rapper

Fat Joe believes he was robbed of what would’ve been his first Grammy Award by Chance The Rapper in 2017.

Joey Crack and Remy Ma’s “All the Way Up” collaboration with French Montana was nominated for Best Rap Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost out to Chance’s Coloring Book hit “No Problem” featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz.

The song was also in contention for Best Rap Song, which went to Drake’s summer smash “Hotline Bling.”

In a recent interview with GQ, Fat Joe made no bones about his belief that “All the Way Up” should’ve taken home the award over “No Problem.” The 52-year-old MC clarified he has no ill will toward Chance The Rapper, but claimed his song didn’t have the same cultural impact as his and Remy’s.

“I should have won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance 2017,” Joe plainly stated. “Chance is a cool guy. But the Grammy should have come my way. ‘All the Way Up’ was bigger. Not only that, if people understood the culture, Remy and I were like Robin Hood and Cinderella. They could have done the ‘hood a favor and given ‘All the Way Up,’ the fuckin’ Grammy. You understand?

“They gave it to Chance the Rapper — and for what? I’m not going to be disrespectful, but they gave it to him for a record I don’t even know no more. This is my point. I don’t even know what he beat us with. Do you understand?”

Joe, whose “Lean Back” hit similarly lost out to the Black Eyed Peas’ “Let’s Get It Started” in the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group category at the 2005 Grammys, added: “We came out of jail. We made it. It’s a miracle. It was their responsibility to say, You know what? Let’s give the underdogs the Grammys.”

The Bronx rap vet initially reacted to his Grammys loss by posting what some thought was a backhanded compliment to Chance The Rapper on Instagram. “I hear you gotta sell it to snatch the Grammy!” he wrote, referencing Chance’s lyric on Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam.” “Whats the Chance of that lol congrats to the winners!”

Released in March 2016, “All the Way Up” was one of the biggest rap songs that year — particularly in Fat Joe and Remy Ma’s native New York City — peaking at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 while soaring to triple platinum certification. The Cool & Dre-produced track was Joe’s most successful song in a decade and remains Remy’s highest-charting hit.

“All the Way Up” was also a favorite among Joe and Remy’s rap peers, with JAY-Z joining the Terror Squad duo on the official remix, burying his and Joey Crack’s long-running beef. Snoop Dogg, Jadakiss, The Game, E-40 and even EDM kingpin David Guetta also added their flavor to the record across various other remixes.

Drake almost appeared alongside JAY-Z on the official remix, too.

“Drake called me three times, FaceTime,” Fat Joe told GQ. “He knew it was a hit. He called me, ‘Yo, send the track. Send the track.’ And I wanted to put Drake on there. Drake is one of my favorite artists of all time. One of the greatest artists of all time, lyrically, melody. I love everything about Drake. His persona, his attitude, everything about him.

“Who else got 15 years in, putting out No. 1 one after No. 1, after No. 1, after No. 1? I fuck with Drake, know what I’m saying? I don’t know if I’ve told him that, but I wouldn’t lie to you. Anybody brings up his name, I’m going to tell the truth. He’s the best.”

Fat Joe Reveals How 50 Cent Beef Cost Him $20M

However, Joe ultimately opted against putting Drizzy on the remix as he didn’t want to overshadow his on-wax reunion with JAY-Z, with whom he’d been at odds for years, nor Remy’s first collaboration with Hov, her “favorite artist.”

“It was right to put him on the song at that moment. But with all the history between me and JAY-Z, I just felt like for the real fans that know Fat Joe, we had to let that fly,” he explained. “Get that moment with Joe cracking, and Jay and Remy, and it came out phenomenal.

“It just meant too much to me, emotionally just to do the song with Jay, and with Remy. Because Jay is Remy’s favorite artist. Remy looks up to JAY-Z, but had never been able to work with him — because of Fat Joe.”

Angela Álvarez, 95, wins best new artist Latin Grammy in a history-making tie

CNN
 —

Angela Álvarez made Latin Grammy history on Thursday by winning the award for best new artist at age 95.

The singer tied in the category with musician and songwriter Silvana Estrada, but she had already set a record going into the event with her nomination as the oldest musician ever nominated in the category.

“I want to dedicate this award to God and to my beloved country, Cuba, which I will never be able to forget,” Álvarez said accepting her award on stage at the Latin Grammys in Las Vegas.

The Cuban-native’s passion for music began in her youth. She was discouraged from pursuing a career in music by her father but found joy performing for her family. The mother of four, grandmother of nine and the great-grandmother of 15 immigrated to the United States in the 1960s, according to Billboard.

Over the years, she sang for her family about her life and developed a collection of songs she composed. At the encouragement and support of her grandson, she eventually recorded and released collection of her songs in 2021.

The Latin Grammy nomination came as a surprise to her, Álvarez told CNN en Español last month.

“I felt very, very proud to be able to tell my story, to touch people who have probably gone through the same or more than what I have gone through. There are people who give up, but I did not give up. I always fought,” she said.

Álvarez concluded her speech on Thursday with words of inspiration.

“To those who have not fulfilled their dream, although life is difficult, there is always a way out and with faith and love you can achieve it, I promise you,” Álvarez said. “It’s never too late.”
