49ers report card: Grading offense, defense in Week 17 win vs. Raiders

LAS VEGAS — The 49ers’ defense played a very un-49ers-defense-like game on New Year’s Day.

The 49ers might have underestimated Las Vegas Raiders starting quarterback Jarrett Stidham, as defensive end Nick Bosa said. But, ultimately, the defense came through with the play of the game in the 49ers’ 37-34 overtime victory at Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.

Bosa pushed Raiders left tackle Kolton Miller into Stidham as he was throwing. Safety Tashaun Gipson intercepted the wobbler, and returned it 56 yards in overtime to set up Robbie Gould’s winning kick.

“I think it was a good game for us,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “We didn’t play perfect. But to still be able to find a way to win, I’m real proud of the guys.”

Here are the grades from the 49ers’ Week 17 victory:

Rushing offense

Running back Christian McCaffrey had himself quite a day, and it started with a 37-yard run on a third-and-3 situation on the opening drive of the game.

McCaffrey finished with 121 yards and a touchdown on 19 rushing attempts.

Rookie running back Jordan Mason gave the 49ers a seven-point lead with 2:17 remaining in regulation with a 14-yard touchdown run. As a team, the 49ers gained 170 yards rushing with a 6.3 average.

Grade: A

Passing offense

The 49ers’ offensive line, especially right tackle Mike McGlinchey, did a good job of neutralizing Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby. The Raiders did not register any sacks in the game.

Purdy faced some adversity and responded at the right times. Purdy completed 22 of 35 pass attempts for 284 yards with two touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 95.4.

“Today showed us this dude’s on a different level,” 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk said of Purdy, who helped rally the 49ers from a 10-point second-half deficit.

Aiyuk had a big day with nine receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown. McCaffrey added six receptions for 72 yards.

George Kittle had four catches for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Grade: A

Rushing defense

This was not like the 49ers’ defense to get pushed around like this.

Las Vegas rushed for 135 yards on 32 rushing attempts. It was the second-most yards the 49ers have given up on the ground this season.
Josh Jacobs led the way for the Raiders with 69 yards and a touchdown on 17 rushing attempts.

The 49ers’ best run defense came when T.Y. McGill and Charles Omenihu stopped Jacobs on a fourth-down play near the goal line.

Grade: C-minus

Passing defense

Gipson — with a lot of help from Bosa — made the play that decided the game in overtime.

Up to that point, there was not much the 49ers’ defense did right against Stidham, who completed 23 of 34 pass attempts for 365 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

The 49ers had too many blown coverages. Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams had a big day with seven catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

The other big play from the defense was Drake Jackson’s interception off a pass that Kerry Hyder deflected. Without the two interceptions, this would have been a failing grade.

Grade: C-minus

Special teams

Gould usually is automatic, so it was a big surprise when he was wide right on a 41-yard attempt at the end of regulation. His game-winner came from 23 yards out.

Mitch Wishnowsky only had two punts in the game: His 37-yard punt helped the Raiders with field position on a touchdown drive in the first half. He later boomed a 57-yarder with no return.

The 49ers allowed no yards on kickoff or punt returns.

Grade: C

Coaching

The 49ers’ offense hit its stride with a finely tuned game plan opening up big plays. Coach Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling was especially effective late in the game with the running and passing attacks meshing together.

On defense, there were way too many mistakes. Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has plenty of things to clean up this week, including the team’s pass rush, which allowed big lanes for Stidham to scramble.

Grade: B-minus

Overall

Either the 49ers’ defense was exposed, giving future opponents a blueprint or it was a good learning experience that came at the right time in order for San Francisco to fix its mistakes before the postseason.

RELATED: How Purdy maintained level head in 49ers’ wild win over Raiders

Take your pick.

The 49ers’ ninth consecutive victory looked a lot like the 2019 game against the New Orleans Saints when the offense showed it could win a shootout when the defense struggled.

Grade: B

49ers report card: Grading offense, defense in 37-20 win vs. Commanders

SANTA CLARA — Kyle Shanahan admitted he was frustrated that the 49ers were tied at halftime with the Washington Commanders on Saturday.

But the 49ers scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to begin to take control of a 37-20 victory at Levi’s Stadium.

The Commanders stayed around until the fourth quarter when the 49ers settled for three short Robbie Gould field goals.

“It should have been a lot worse than it was,” Shanahan said.

Still, the 49ers, the NFC’s No. 3 seed, made more than enough plays necessary for the decisive win over a team that is currently the No. 7 and final seed in the NFC playoffs. The Commanders (7-7-1) are a half-game ahead of Seattle and Detroit.

Here is a look at the 49ers’ report card from their Week 16 game:

Rushing offense

The 49ers were up against one of the top defensive lines in the NFL, and the Commanders were determined not to allow the 49ers to control this game on the ground.

Christian McCaffrey and Ty Davis-Price did not have much room to run against Washington’s stacked box, though the 49ers cracked through when wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud took a handoff on an orbit motion and picked up blocks from Mike McGlinchey, McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings and Willie Snead to turn the corner and race away for a 71-yard touchdown run.

McCaffrey finished with 46 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, while Davis-Price had 30 yards on nine attempts. McCloud’s touchdown run was his only carry of the day.

Grade: B

Passing offense

Brock Purdy continued to keep the 49ers rolling on Saturday with another strong showing. The rookie completed 15 of 22 pass attempts for 234 yards with two touchdown passes while throwing one interception and finishing with a passer rating of 114.6.

Purdy twice hooked up with tight end George Kittle on touchdown plays. The first one was a ball down the middle intended for McCloud, but Kittle changed his route to make the grab for a 34-yard touchdown in front of McCloud.

Later in the third quarter, Kittle turned a short Purdy pass into a 33-yard touchdown on the 49ers’ next drive.

Purdy threw an interception that was not his fault, as Jennings bobbled an on-target pass, allowing safety Darrick Forrest to make the interception.

Purdy converted a fourth-and-3 play late in the game with a throw to Kittle in a tight window.

Kittle had six receptions for 120 yards, while Brandon Aiyuk added 81 yards on five catches.

Grade: A

Rushing defense

The Commanders are a running team, but they could not find anywhere to go against the 49ers’ stout front seven.

That did not stop Washingon from trying, however, as they gained just 79 yards on 33 rushing attempts for a measly 2.4-yard average. The Commanders’ leading rusher, Brian Robinson, managed just 58 yards on 22 attempts.

Pro Bowl linebacker Fred Warner came through with 13 tackles, including tackles to stop two fourth-down attempts.

Grade: A

Passing defense

Defensive end Nick Bosa registered two sacks, setting a new career high with 17.5 to go along with four quarterback hurries, while also tallying another non-recorded sack to stop a two-point conversion attempt in the fourth quarter.

Jimmie Ward had a fourth quarter interception

The Commanders had some success in the passing game, however. Taylor Heinicke completed 13 of 18 for 166 yards with two touchdowns, while Carson Wentz was 12 of 16 for 123 yards and a touchdown.

Washington’s two quarterbacks had a combined passer rating of 115.9.

Grade: B-minus

Special teams

Robbie Gould was perfect on his three fourth-quarter field-goal attempts, but the highlight of this phase of the game was the 49ers’ coverage units.

San Francisco’s kick coverage unit was particularly strong, with George Odum having an incredible day with four tackles.

Washington had a 15.5 average on six kickoff returns.

Grade: A

Coaching

Shanahan was a bit more aggressive from the outset, going for it on a fourth-and-1 play in the first quarter, though the 49ers’ option attempt with Kyle Juszczyk at the point failed.

Late in the fourth quarter, Shanahan went for it on a fourth-and-3, and Purdy delivered with a completion to Kittle.

The 49ers pushed the right buttons offensively, including the run play to McCloud that broke a scoreless tie in the second quarter.

RELATED: How Shanahan hilariously used Deebo to fire up McCloud’s TD

The 49ers’ offense showed more vulnerability than it has in a while against an offense that’s not known for being prolific.

Grade: A

Overall

The Commanders have a playoff caliber defense, and the 49ers came through with a well-rounded game.

Players stepped up on offense, defense and special teams en route to San Francisco’s eighth consecutive win.

Grade: A-minus

49ers report card: Grading offense, defense in complete win over Buccaneers

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers reported more than their fair share of injuries coming out of a 35-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

But even with uncertainty with several players, including wide receiver Deebo Samuel, the 49ers were feeling mighty good about their new quarterback and their overall team performance.

“We got a quarterback,” 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa said of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, who became the first quarterback to earn his first NFL victory against a Tom Brady-led team.

He had quite a day, and so did a lot of his teammates.

Here is a look at the 49ers’ report card from their thorough Week 14 victory over Tampa Bay at Levi’s Stadium:

Rushing offense

The 49ers tried to soften the Bucs’ defense with their emphasis on the passing game to open the game. Christian McCaffrey got his first carry on the 49ers’ fifth play from scrimmage and he tore off a 21-yard run.

The 49ers controlled the game on the ground, rushing for 209 yards and three touchdowns on 36 attempts.

Samuel got the 49ers on the board when he took a pitch, turned the corner and somehow got into the end zone.

McCaffrey put the game away with a 38-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter. He finished with 119 yards on 14 rushes. Rookie Jordan Mason came on and added 56 yards on 11 rushes.

Grade: A

Passing offense

Purdy did everything the 49ers’ asked of him in his first NFL start . . . and then some.

He showed his movement skills early in the second quarter when he scrambled 2 yards for a touchdown. On the 49ers’ next offensive play, he escaped the rush and found Samuel for an 18-yard competition.

Purdy finished with 16 completions on 21 attempts for 185 yards with two touchdown passes and no interceptions thrown. He had a 27-yard touchdown pass to McCaffrey and a 32-yarder to Brandon Aiyuk.

The 49ers’ offensive line protected Purdy well, as he was not sacked in the game.

Grade: A

Rushing defense

The Buccaneers averaged 3.6 yards per carry, and the 49ers made Tampa Bay one-dimensional. Rachaad White gained 56 yards on 13 attempts while Leonard Fournette was an absolute non-factor with 13 yards on four attempts.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was all over the place for the 49ers’ defense with 15 tackles.

Late in the game, the 49ers generated a third takeaway of the game when Jimmie Ward forced a fumble of White and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair came up with the fumble recovery.

Grade: A

Passing defense

Tom Brady had a rough, rough day against the 49ers’ defense.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion threw for 253 yards against the 49ers’ defense, but he lost a lot of skin to get there.

Brady completed 34 of 55 pass attempts with one touchdown pass and two interceptions thrown. Tashaun Gipson and Greenlaw registered interceptions, as Brady’s passer rating for the game was a lowly 63.7.

The 49ers did not pick up a sack against Brady, who stuck with the short-passing game. But San Francisco got enough pressure on him to make things extremely difficult.

Grade: A

Special teams

Robbie Gould was called up for extra points, not field goals. And nobody with the 49ers was complaining about that turn of events.

Return man Ray-Ray McCloud had a good day with a 14.3-yard average on three punts and 27.0 average on two kickoffs.

Punter Mitch Wishnowsky had 44.7 average (37.7 net) on three punts).

Grade: A

Coaching

The 49ers installed strong game plans on offense and defense against the NFC South-leading Buccaneers.

Coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense made best use of Purdy’s skills in running the offense. He saw something in the second quarter that prompted him to call a play that was not in the game plan. The result was Purdy’s 32-yard touchdown pass on a double-move.

Defensively, the 49ers kept Brady bottled up and took away any ability of the Bucs to make big plays.

Grade: A

Overall

The 49ers and Buccaneers are two teams who appear to be heading toward the playoffs.

The 49ers left no doubt on Sunday, racing out to a 35-0 lead and clamping down for the final 29 minutes of the game.

Grading PSU’s Week 1 win at Purdue

To say Penn State’s season opener at Purdue was a roller coaster of emotion would be an understatement. A game with seven lead changes that is decided in the final minute of the game is a heck of a way to start a brand new college football season. Penn State managed to come out on top of Purdue in a tilt-a-whirl 35-31 victory on Thursday night to get an early jump on the Week 1 schedule.

Now comes the fun part; evaluating the performance.

Let’s go through the postgame report card to evaluate Penn State’s season debut for the 2022 season.

Quarterback

Grade: B+

Ona  night when your starting quarterback turns in four passing touchdowns and runs for one more and leads the drive of the game in the clutch, it is incredibly difficult to be too harsh with an evaluation. Was it a great game by Sean Clifford? Not at all. Clifford passed for 282 yards and four touchdowns, including a 67-yard pass to tight end Brenton Strange at the end of the first half to inflate the stats a bit, and he completed 20 of 37 pass attempts. He also had a bad overthrow of Mitchell Tinsley in the fourth quarter that was picked off and returned for a Purdue touchdown to take the lead in the fourth.

But you get credit for the toughness and guts in this situation. We can’t quite deliver an “A” here, but it’s darn close under the conditions.

Drew Allar played one series in place of Clifford in the third quarter. He completed two of his four pass attempts for 26 yards and showed off a solid arm. But he was clearly a freshman starting on the road in a tough spot. His time will come.

Apple Says High Power Mode on 16-Inch MacBook Pro With M1 Max Designed for Tasks Like Color Grading 8K ProRes Video

As we previously reported, we’ve received confirmation from Apple that 16-inch MacBook Pro models configured with an M1 Max chip feature a new High Power Mode that is designed to maximize performance during intensive, sustained workloads.

We’ve since come across a document from Apple that indicates users will be able to enable High Power Mode in System Preferences on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Max chip running macOS Monterey. In the document, Apple says that High Power Mode will provide users with “extreme performance” for tasks like color grading 8K ProRes video.

It’s still unclear exactly how High Power Mode will function, but we should get a closer look at the feature next week when reviews of the new MacBook Pro models are shared. Based on code-level references to High Power Mode in the macOS Monterey beta found by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, we do know that the feature “will optimize performance to better support resource-intensive tasks” and “may result in louder fan noise.”

Apple only confirmed High Power Mode being available on 16-inch MacBook Pro models with an M1 Max chip, so we presume the feature is not available on any 14-inch MacBook Pro models or any models configured with the M1 Pro chip.

9to5Mac‘s Filipe Espósito was first to discover references to High Power Mode in the macOS Monterey beta last month.

There are two configurations of the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip available, including one with a 10-core CPU and a 24-core GPU and another with a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU. Pricing starts at $3,099 for this level of performance. The new MacBook Pro models will begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, October 26.

Report Card: Grading the Steelers Week 2 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders

The dust has settled and the Pittsburgh Steelers were left shell-shocked in a 26-17 defeat at home to the Las Vegas Raiders. Not a whole lot went right for the Steelers on Sunday afternoon, from injuries, to blown plays it was an all around let down by the men of steel. Below are the game grades for the offense, defense, and special teams of the Steelers, and today’s poor performance will be a direct link to the grades they received.

The Steelers offense once again stumbled out of the gate. Slow starts have plagued this team for a long time, but in 2021 the problem has only grown. Seemingly, the Steelers offense doesn’t wake up until near the end of the first half. Ben Roethlisberger also hobbled out of the gate, but finished the game a shade under 300 yards, his one interception was a terrible decision on a play he should have just taken the sack.

Najee Harris looked pretty good, considering he wasn’t given much in terms of rushing lanes. His 25-yard touchdown reception was the first of his career, and he threw a vicious stiff arm that will be replayed on highlight reels for the rest of the season. Harris is a great football player, I just hope he can get some proper running lanes to run through.

The tight ends and receivers were fine, you would wish Chase Claypool would start bringing down some of those jump balls Roethlisberger has been launching his way. This offense has the players to be a big play team, but the big plays just aren’t happening. It’s frustrating to know their potential only for it to not be met week after week. You have to hope a break out game is on the way, but we have been waiting on this for a long time.

Overall Grade: D+

It’s hard to fault the defense for this game considering they were down four starters from the week before, and Stephon Tuitt who is on Injured Reserve. Joe Haden, Devin Bush, Tyson Alualu, and T.J. Watt all missed more than a half of the game, and their absences were noticeable. Despite not having them in the game, the rest of the Steelers defense kept things interesting.

Raiders quarterback, Derek Carr ripped the Steelers defense to shreds in the passing game throwing for more than 350 yards. Carr seemingly had a receiver running open on every play, with Hunter Renfrow gashing the defense on what felt like every third down. The Steelers managed to keep Darren Waller in check for most of the afternoon, but the other pass catchers more than made up for it. Henry Ruggs put the game on ice taking a Carr pass 61 yards for a the dagger touchdown on third down. That play could’ve been the difference in the game, and unfortunately it fell in the Raiders’ favor.

The Steelers did erase the Raiders rushing attack however. Was it the Steelers front that did it, or the Raiders lack of interest running the ball with Josh Jacobs out of the game remains to be seen, but the fact of the matter remains, the Steelers defense didn’t get gashed on the ground.

Overall Grade: C-

Pretty quiet day returning the football from both sides, but Pressley Harvin III and Chris Boswell were excellent. Harvin bombed the ball all over the field, including one that was downed at the three yard line. While Boswell kicked a Heinz Field record 56-yard field goal in a high pressure scenario. The kicker and punter did their job perfectly, now hopefully they can carry that throughout the year.

Overall Grade: B+

It just want the Steelers’ day, the defense desperately needs to get healthy, and the offense needs to start figuring out what they have to do on the field. The Steelers won’t win many, or any, games with today’s formula, and that needs to change. The Raiders were simply the better team on this day, and for the Steelers playing at home in front of fans for the first time since 2019 is shocking and never should have happened.

The Steelers also beat themselves at times on Sunday, suffering a number of penalties, including offsides, holds, and false starts. These are simple penalties that can be taken out of any game by being more disciplined. Hopefully this will be the last time we have to talk about the Steelers shooting themselves in the foot this year.

Overall Grade: C-

But what do you think? Do you agree with these Steelers grades? Let us know your thoughts down in the below.
