Snap’s chief business officer Jeremi Gorman to run ads at Netflix

Netflix has found an executive to lead its plan for an ad-supported tier: Snap’s chief business officer and top ad exec, Jeremi Gorman.

Gorman on Tuesday told colleagues at Snap that she was leaving to join Netflix along with Peter Naylor, Snap’s vice president of ad sales for the Americas, according to two people familiar with the matter. Russ Caditz-Peck, a Snap spokesperson, confirmed the departures.

Both Gorman and Naylor are leaving Snap amid a restructuring of its ads team and layoffs hitting the social media firm this week. Snap plans to cut roughly 20 percent of its workforce starting Wednesday, The Verge earlier reported.

Netflix has had its own rounds of layoffs this year, cutting hundreds of employees and paring back programming after reporting its first subscriber loss in a decade. Now the company is preparing to launch a cheaper tier supported by advertising that could cost between $7–$9 per month and exclude extras, like the ability to download videos.

Kumiko Hidaka, a Netflix spokesperson, confirmed that Gorman will be the company’s President of Worldwide Advertising and that she’ll report to COO Greg Peters. Naylor will lead Netflix’s ad sales organization and report to Gorman. AdAge first reported on the hires.

“Jeremi’s deep experience in running ad businesses and Peter’s background in leading ad sales teams together will be key as we expand membership options for consumers through a new ad-supported offering,” Peters said in a statement.

Big league bound: Cardinals call on Gorman, Liberatore to revamp roster after late loss to Mets | St. Louis Cardinals

NEW YORK — The Cardinals wasted no time Thursday sifting through the rubble from an extra-innings loss at Citi Field before putting pieces together to give them a dramatic new look.

The New York Mets had not yet stopped celebrating their 7-6 victory in the 10th inning when the Cardinals management began revamping the roster in the middle of a road trip. The visitors’ clubhouse remained closed to anyone but team officials for 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 26 minutes after the final out — not because of what was being said to the current team after a sour series in Queens, but who was being added to it overnight.

Nolan Gorman and Matthew Liberatore, the Cardinals’ top prospects and friends since their boyhoods in Arizona, will join the club in Pittsburgh for their major-league debuts. Liberatore, a lefty and one of the top pitching prospects in the minors, will start Saturday at PNC Park. Gorman, the game’s leading power prospect with a Triple-A best 15 homers, will take over at second base Friday.

“We have a need,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “So, he’s coming to fill it.”

And more changes could follow.

For the second consecutive game, a short start and overextended innings left the bullpen exposed and then it shattered. After allowing nine runs in a loss Wednesday, Cardinals relievers misplaced a lead in the fifth and 10th innings. Harrison Bader ran the Cardinals back into the game with a steal in the ninth and scored to tie the game, 5-5, on Paul Goldschmidt’s fourth RBI. In the final swing of his career during a regular-season game in Queens, Albert Pujols extended his major-league record for grounding into double plays, but this one scored Corey Dickerson to give the Cardinals 6-5 lead for closer Giovanny Gallegos to hold. Spoiler: He didn’t.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor had barely reached second base as the free runner at the start of the 10th inning when he headed home on Pete Alonso’s third career walk-off homer.

“We’ve got to get deeper in games,” Marmol said of his starters. “The pace of the game wasn’t really pleasant to be honest with you. It was slow. We’ve got to engage our defense a little more, and honestly there will be some reshuffling of that bullpen to see who can get outs.”

The Cardinals had started to prepare for Liberatore’s likely start Saturday since a rainout forced a doubleheader at Citi Field this past Tuesday. While percolating for weeks because of his power show at Class AAA Memphis, the decision to promote Gorman came fast Thursday.

Left fielder Tyler O’Neill experienced soreness in his right shoulder, had difficulty playing catch Thursday morning with coach Willie McGee, and was diagnosed with an impingement in his throwing arm. The Cardinals placed him on the 10-day injured list and sent him back to St. Louis for examination by team doctors. An additional benefit of the time off the active roster will be at-bats in the minors for O’Neill on a rehab assignment.

That left the Cardinals with an opening for a bat.

They’ve acknowledged for weeks the search for a bat.

“Just what we need,” said rookie Juan Yepez, who homered Thursday and paired with Gorman for a thunderous start to the season with the Triple-A Redbirds. “He’s such a great teammate. Great hitter, too. That power lefty. It will be good for us.”

The Cardinals’ 19th overall selection in 2018, Gorman vanquished any concerns about his sluggish spring training with 15 homers, a.308 average, a .677 slugging percentage, and his 1.044 OPS in the first 34 games of Memphis’ season. He had back-to-back three-hit games this week, and he’s been jockeying with Cardinals Class AA outfielder Moises Gomez for the minor-league lead in homers. Gomez surged ahead with 17.

The Cardinals had been hesitant to thrust Gorman, 22, into the majors too early, too swiftly because of his newness at second base and adjustment to the speed of the game for a gold-laced defense. The club has also wanted to see a reduction in his strikeout rate — 50 in his first 133 at-bats this year.

“He’ll be in the lineup. He’s here to play,” Marmol said. “He’s going to get here and he’s going to show what he’s able to do. He’s been working hard minimizing strikeouts. It’s something he’s aware of, we’re aware of. (He’s been working) at it pretty good. Still making a lot of contact and driving the ball.”

Gold Glove-winning second baseman Tommy Edman will slide over to shortstop to make room for Gorman. The Cardinals placed starter Jack Flaherty on the 60-day disabled list clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Gorman.

The roster move for Liberatore will come Saturday, and it could be telling.

The Cardinals lost three of the four games to the Mets this season, and in the final two the starter did not complete the fifth inning. That put quicksand under the bullpen — and the more the relievers kicked and delivered, the more they sank. Thrust into Wednesday’s game early because Jake Walsh did not retire a batter, Nick Wittgren allowed all three runners he inherited to score and snap a tie game. On Wednesday, Wittgren relieved Dakota Hudson in the fifth inning, inherited a run, and then allowed a three-run inning that flipped the game on the Cardinals. Hudson allowed two runs in the first inning, needed 30 pitches to get three out, and pitched with little pep. Marmol remarked that the game’s soporific pace was dull for the defense, too.

“Just got to be quicker, quicker to make adjustments,” Hudson said. “Quicker to get in rhythm.”

The pace and the partial starts rolled down hill like a snowball, gathering gunk and size, and the bullpen could not help but get bowled by it.

The Cardinals’ bullpen allowed 12 runs, five from lefty T.J. McFarland, in the final 8 1/3 innings of the series it pitched. The Mets bullpen allowed six runs total in 16 innings pitched during the series.

“We just have to get in there and McFarland and Wittgren — get your groundball,” Marmol said. “That’s what they’re here for. A little bit of a tough run at it. They need to get back to doing that.”

Liberatore could be a part of that.

The doubleheader Tuesday left the Cardinals rewriting the schedule to keep starters Steven Matz and Miles Mikolas on normal rest. That created a vacancy for Saturday — and an opportunity for the lefty. Liberatore, 22, has a 3.83 ERA in seven starts at Memphis. In three of his past four starts, Liberatore has pitched at least six innings, twice gone seven, and he had back-to-back seven shutout innings in his final two April starts.

If it’s innings the Cardinals want, Liberatore will get a look. If it’s a lefty the Cardinals need, Liberatore has struck out 15 of the 58 left-handed batters he’s faced this season.

The audition is open-ended.

Like Gorman, it will be obvious if he sticks around.

“He’s coming to throw on Saturday and we’ll get a good look at it,” Marmol said. “And just see where we want to go from there.”

Cardinals’ Nolan Gorman continues power binge

It’s only two weeks into the 2022 season, but Nolan Gorman is finishing his team’s series with a flourish.

Baseball’s No. 32 overall prospect continued his power surge at the dish with a home run in his fourth straight game and ran his hitting streak to seven as Triple-A Memphis fell in its series finale at Charlotte, 9-3.

After being hit by a pitch in the second inning and popping out to second base in the third, Gorman came through in the sixth. The Redbirds’ designated hitter connected on an offering from Knights starter John Parke and went the other way, depositing it atop the pavilion roof in left for a solo shot.

The homer was Gorman’s sixth in as many games since he launched a pair in his last series finale, April 10 against visiting Gwinnett.

“Guys are a lot better up here,” Gorman said of Triple-A after that performance. “They’ve got good stuff and can command it. You’ve got to be able to really pick your zone and not go out of your way to chase pitches. It’s really just accepting that they’re going to hit their corners and just waiting for them to make a mistake. When they do, don’t miss it. That’s a big thing that I’ve been focusing on, just shrinking the zone and only hitting pitches that I know I can drive.”

Since an 0-for-9 start with five strikeouts through his team’s first three games, St. Louis’ No. 2 prospect has gone 13-for-28 (.464) with six homers, all solo blasts.

“It’s been good getting back in the swing of things and competing against good teams and good players,” the 21-year-old said a week ago. “It’s been fun, and us as a team, I think we’ve got a good team out here. It’s been fun learning and developing with these guys.”

Through 10 games this season, Gorman is now batting .351/.415/.838.

Cardinals Notes: Gorman, Winn, Walker

As part of the ongoing lockout, MLB staff are not allowed to discuss any of the locked out players with the media. However, this doesn’t include players that aren’t on a 40-man roster, leaving front office members free to discuss prospects that have yet to earn a roster spot. As such, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak provided some comments to John Denton of MLB.com about Nolan Gorman, Masyn Winn and Jordan Walker. (Twitter links 1, 2 and 3.)

On Gorman, Mozeliak had this to say: “Very impressive. His development & how he’s growing & creating more value for himself by playing multiple positions it’s a positive. From an offensive standpoint we’re all excited to see what he’s capable of doing.” Gorman had an excellent year at the plate in 2021, playing 119 games between Double-A and Triple-A, hitting a combined .279/.333/.481, wRC+ of 115. The 21-year-old is now considered among the top 60 prospects in the game by each of Baseball America, FanGraphs and MLB Pipeline. As Mozeliak points out, Gorman also expanded his positional versatility last year. Prior to 2021, he had only played third base in the Cardinals’ system, but he played 77 games at second base last year, compared with 32 at the hot corner. Of course, the club already has an excellent third baseman in Nolan Arenado, who is under contract through 2027. (He can opt out of his contract after this year but, based on the fact that he just declined an opt out last year, it seems unlikely he would do so.) Second base, however, seems likely to be manned by Tommy Edman this year, though he could be bumped into a super-utility role if Gorman were able to force his way into the picture.

As for Winn, Mozeliak tells Denton that the youngster will be focused exclusively on playing shortstop this spring. The Cardinals drafted Winn as a two-way player in 2020 and he plied both aspects of his trade last year. However, he only logged a single appearance on the hill, throwing one inning. As for the other part of his game, he made 438 plate appearances between A-ball and High-A, hitting .242/.324/.356. It seems his pitching aspirations will be taking a backseat for now, though it’s always possible he could return to the mound in the future.

When asked about Jordan Walker’s future positions, Mozeliak said, “He’s gonna get work at places, but he’s such a good athlete I don’t think that’s a panic moment for us. … As (most) have heard me say before, if you hit, we will find you a place to play.” Walker certainly did hit in 2021, his first year of game action in the professional ranks. Between A-ball and High-A, he made 366 plate appearances and hit .317/.388/.548, wRC+ 151. On the defensive side of things, Walker only played third base last year. But given the presence of Arenado, it makes sense to give him an opportunity to try to find another home, just like Gorman.

Amanda Gorman recites powerful original poem at Super Bowl LV

Activist and poet Amanda Gorman, who was the country’s first ever National Youth Poet Laureate, recited an original poem before Sunday’s Super Bowl game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Gorman’s poem, “Chorus of the Captains,” celebrated and introduced the three honorary captains — Pittsburgh-based Marine veteran James Martin, who volunteers with the Wounded Warrior Project and works with at-risk kids, Los Angeles educator Trimaine Davis and Tampa ICU nurse manager Suzie Dorner — who were specially invited to the game by the NFL.

Watch her full performance, pre-recorded by the NFL, here:

Gorman, 22, is the first poet ever to recite a poem at a Super Bowl game. “These are the moments I strive for in my lifetime, which is to bring poetry into places that we least expect it, so we can fully kind of grapple with the ways in which it can heal us and kind of resurrect us,” she told Trevor Noah on “The Daily Show.”

The young activist, who has recited multiple original works commissioned by “CBS This Morning,” became a viral sensation when she performed her original poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Biden’s inauguration. She is also the youngest poet to recite a poem at a presidential inauguration

She told “CBS This Morning” co-host Anthony Mason then: “Poetry is a weapon. It is an instrument of social change…and poetry is one of the most political arts out there because it demands that you rupture and destabilize the language in which you’re working with. “Inherently, you are pushing against the status quo. And so for me, it’s always existed in that tradition of truth-telling.”

Gorman’s poem followed musical performances from Grammy-winning artist H.E.R., R&B and pop star Jazmine Sullivan and the Grammy-nominated country singer Eric Church. Grammy-winning H.E.R. sang “America The Beautiful,” while Sullivan and Church gave an original rendition of the national anthem. ASL performer Warren “Wawa” Snipe signed the two songs as well.

Amanda Gorman signs with IMG models

Written by Oscar Holland, CNN

Less than a week after enrapturing audiences at President Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony, America’s youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman has signed with one of the world’s biggest modeling agencies.

On Monday, the 22-year-old Harvard graduate completed a deal with IMG Models, which represents fashion heavyweights like Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen, the agency confirmed to CNN.

Gorman was one of the breakout stars of last week’s presidential inauguration, where she read her powerful poem “The Hill We Climb.” As well as moving onlookers in Washington and around the world, the Los Angeles native also impressed with her vivid fashion choices.

In a yellow double-breasted coat by Italian designer Miuccia Prada and a red satin Prada headband, the poet and activist stood out against the more muted crowd behind her. She completed the outfit with jewelry — gifted to her by Oprah Winfrey — by independent designers including New York-based brand Of Rare Origin and the Greek jewelry maker Nikos Koulis.

In the days since being thrust into the global spotlight, Gorman has made a number of high-profile public appearances. CNN’s Anderson Cooper said on air that he was “transfixed” by the poet during an interview shortly after the inauguration. During a virtual appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Tuesday, meanwhile, DeGeneres “endorsed” Gorman for president, though she is still 13 years below the minimum age required for a presidential run.
Gorman’s forthcoming books, “Change Sings: A Children’s Anthem” and “The Hill We Climb and Other Poems,” are currently at the top of Amazon’s bestseller list.

As well as representing full-time models, IMG has a variety of figures from the entertainment world on its roster, including Chrissy Teigen and Selena Gomez, as well as musicians, actors and sport stars like Naomi Osaka. The agency’s latest deal will see it develop endorsements and editorial opportunities for Gorman in the fashion and beauty sectors.

Though Gorman has yet to issue a statement about the deal, she recently spoke to Vogue about her interest in fashion. In an interview published shortly before the inauguration, she told the magazine that she would be incorporating her “own type of symbolism” into last Wednesday’s outfit.

“(Fashion) has so much meaning to me, and it’s my way to lean into the history that came before me and all the people supporting me,” she is quoted as saying.
