The Goldbergs: New season to kill off Jeff Garlin’s character following actor’s on-set misconduct allegations

The co-showrunners of ABC sitcom The Goldbergs have addressed the fate of Jeff Garlin’s character in the forthcoming season, following allegations of on-set misconduct levelled at the actor.

Garlin, who played family patriarch, Murray Goldberg, left the show in 2021 after an internal investigation into allegations of the 60-year-old actor’s physical and verbal conduct that reportedly made his coworkers uncomfortable.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, Alex Barnow explained that Garlin’s character will have already met his demise when the show returns for season 10.

“This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” he said.

“So we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.”

Co-showrunner Chris Bishop added: “It honestly feels like a huge reboot for us. So we have tons of momentum rolling into this new season.”

Shortly after the 2021 news, Garlin denied claims that he was fired, admitting that he had faced annual investigations by human resources during his last three years on the show, which he chalked down to “missed” jokes.

“I’ve had a conversation with Jeff and he’s aware that he’s not being replaced,” Barnow said. “The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows.”

Meanwhile, Garlin is set to continue his role in the upcoming 12th season of HBO’s Larry David-led Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Season 10 of The Goldbergs premieres on ABC on 21 September in the US.

Elimination Chamber may have been Goldberg’s last match in WWE

Shortly before challenging Bobby Lashley for the WWE championship at SummerSlam last year, Goldberg mentioned in an interview that he only had a couple matches left on his contract with WWE. He noted then that he would love to work with Roman Reigns or John Cena before calling it quits.

Well, he got his wish. After another go round with Lashley at Crown Jewel last year, he would challenge Reigns for the Universal championship at Elimination Chamber just yesterday (Sat., Feb. 19, 2022) in Saudi Arabia. He came up short, getting choked out in the first match of the main card.

So, according to the man himself, he’s finished up his deal. He also teased this could be his last one on Instagram in the days leading up to the match:

Having said all this, and even with that message, he told SI just last month that he’s open to another deal:

“I’m focused on what’s next. If they want to come back to me with something, we’ll talk. You never know what the future holds.”

WWE has gone back to the well so often it’s hard to imagine they won’t continue to do so as long as he’s willing and able. For now, though, it looks like Goldberg has finished up with the company.

Whoopi Goldberg’s The View co-host Sara Haines hits out at fans who say her suspension is not enough

Whoopi Goldberg’s co-host Sara Haines is slamming fans who think suspending the star for two weeks wasn’t enough.

Haines, 44, posted an endearing throwback photo to Instagram showing her and Goldberg, 66, smiling on The View set as they snapped a selfie, saying the memory ‘warmed my heart,’ despite the ongoing controversy.

‘This just popped up and warmed my heart. That’s my Whoops!!!!’ she captioned the shot on Friday.

While many fans said commented that they missed the controversial host on the show, some called out Whoopi’s suspension as being disappointing and slammed the two stars for it.

But Haines wasn’t having it, as she responded on her own post: ‘I’d like to invite people trolling the post to go play somewhere else.

‘To learn from a moment is all we can ask of anyone. And prioritizing punitive measures at the expense of the message/issue (and teaching moment) are misguided.’

Goldberg was suspended from the show for two weeks following her insensitive comments stating that the ‘Holocaust is not about race’ because it involved ‘two groups of white people.’ The star, who is quite known for having strong opinions, said one of the world’s biggest genocides was an example of ‘man’s inhumanity to man.’

She later tried to roll back her comments in an apology on Twitter on January 31, writing: ‘On today’s show, I said the Holocaust “is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.” I should have said it was about both.’

The View co-host Sara Haines, 44, (right) posted an endearing photo (pictured) to Instagram showing her and Whoopi Goldberg, 66, (left) smiling on set as they snapped a selfie, saying the memory ‘warmed my heart,’ despite the ongoing controversy

In the comment section, she asked fans to ‘go play somewhere else’ and to look at this ‘issue’ as a ‘teaching moment’

Besties: The pair (pictured in 2021) are quite close and have been seen on multiple occasions showing affection on the show and on the red carpet

Whoopi apologized on January 31 for her insensitive comments, stating that she should have said the Holocaust was about both race and man’s inhumanity to man

Despite correcting her on the show, her other View co-hosts are also reportedly ‘furious’ by Goldberg’s suspension, with Ana Navarro saying: ‘This was an incredibly unfortunate incident. Whoopi is a lifelong ally to the Jewish community. She is not an anti-Semite. Period. I am sad. And I have nothing else to say.’

However – despite apologizing on Monday – Goldberg went on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday and claimed that, to her, race was something she could ‘see.’

‘I feel, being black, when we talk about race it’s a very different thing to me,’ she told Colbert. ‘So I said I thought the Holocaust wasn’t about race. And it made people very angry. I’m getting a lot of mail from folks and a lot of anger.

‘But I thought it was a salient discussion because as a black person I think of race as being something that I can see.’

Her suspension from The View this week is also the pinnacle of a years-long habit of making off-color remarks about Jewish people that includes a recipe she wrote for a celebrity cookbook in the 1990s called ‘Jewish American Princess Fried Chicken’, DailyMail.com exclusively revealed.

In 1993, Goldberg – whose real name is Caryn Johnson – submitted the recipe to Cooking in The Litchfield Hills, a charity cookbook comprised of recipes from the well-heeled residents of the leafy Connecticut suburb.

DailyMail.com exclusively obtained a copy of the long-forgotten cookbook, where Whoopi’s recipe mocking Jewish-American women glaringly stands out among friendlier submissions like legend Diane Sawyer’s ‘roasted potato skins with scallion dip’, the late Eartha Kitt’s ‘summer zucchini soup with nasturtium blossoms’ and Oscar de la Renta’s ‘fresh pumpkin and crab soup.’

She went on Steven Colbert the following night and claimed that race, to her, was something that she could ‘see’

Earlier this week, DailyMail.com exclusive revealed a controversial cookbook recipe Goldberg that mock Jewish-American women

Whoopi’s recipe reads: ‘Send chauffeur to your favorite butcher shop for the chicken (save the brown paper bag). Have your cook 1) Melt equal parts oil and butter 3/4 deep in skillet over moderate heat.

‘2) Put flour, seasoned with remaining ingredients, into brown paper bag. 3) Rinse chicken parts and place in bag.

‘Then you tightly close top of bag (watch your nails) and shake 10 times.

‘Hand bag to Cook, go dress for dinner. While you dress, have Cook preheat oven to 350 degrees and brown chicken slowly in skillet. When evenly browned, have Cook place chicken in dish in oven. Have Cook prepare rest of meal while you touch up your makeup.

‘In about half an hour, voila! Dinner is served! You must be exhausted.’

At the time, the recipe was slammed by none other than The Anti-Defamation League, whose current CEO went on The View on Tuesday to tell Whoopi why she’d been so offensive earlier this week, before she was suspended.

They called the recipe ‘insulting’ and ‘anti-Semitic’.

‘It’s a lousy recipe with insensitive and anti-Semitic ingredients. Whoopi should know better.

‘She needs some sensitivity training, unfortunately. The good people who published it need some sensitivity training too,’ Abraham Foxman, the National Director of the ADL at the time, said.

In response to the outrage, Whoopi’s agent at the time – Brad Cafarelli – offered a quick explanation: she is Jewish.

‘Maybe (the critics) are not aware that Whoopi is Jewish, so she is certainly not anti-Semitic,’ he said.

It was one of many ambiguous statements about her faith.

She has also released a range of holiday sweaters in the past, including one that featured an Octopus on the front holding a Menorah.

Critics are now demanding that Goldberg be fired from the show.

They pointed to other talk show hosts and TV personalities like Sharon Osborne and Roseanne Barr who were fired over making controversial remarks.

Her other co-hosts (pictured) are reportedly ‘furious’ about her two-week suspension and Ava Navarro (far right) saying ‘this was an incredibly unfortunate incident and Whoopi is a lifelong ally to the Jewish community’

TV industry insiders say it is about time Whoopi is held accountable what they described as a ‘clear pattern of anti-Semitism.’

‘This is a clear pattern of anti-Semitism, it wasn’t a one-off.

‘Hard to see how ABC News tolerates this and claims they are changing their wretched culture with a straight face.

‘Just when you thought Whoopi should send Jeff Zucker a fruit basket, another ABC grenade hits,’ one TV veteran told DailyMail.com.

Noa Tishby, an Israeli activist, writer and actress, told DailyMail.com that Whoopi’s recipe upholds a deeply-rooted desire to mock Jewish women and their families for being successful.

‘The term Jewish American Princess or JAP was created as a microaggression to bash and suppress Jewish upward mobility. That’s what it was used for: to mock Jewish women for their families’ success.

‘In the world we live in today in which every minority can scream and complain about microaggressions, we need to be extra careful and acknowledge Jewish microaggressions, which exist everywhere.

‘JAP is a term that needs to go away and never return. I hope Whoopi has not used it since the 90s and I sure hope that this is a matter of [having] a bad sense of humor, that is outdated, and not taken alongside her recent horrific remarks to indicate her belief system.’

Tishby added that Whoopi’s ambiguity on whether or not she is Jewish is ‘confusing’.

‘I am very confused by Whoopi Goldberg’s position on her Jewishness I’m excited to hear her clear that up.’

Whoopi Goldberg’s career won’t ‘end in carnage,’ expert says: She is ‘liked within ABC and by the left’

Whoopi Goldberg’s career “won’t end in carnage” following her Holocaust comments, an expert told FOX Business, explaining that she is “personally liked within ABC and by the left.”

On Monday, Goldberg, 66, stated that the Holocaust “isn’t about race,” and was subsequently suspended from “The View” for two weeks.

Goldberg, who has publicly apologized, has since found support from names such as Jonathan Greenblatt, who is the Anti-Defamation League’s CEO, Sen. Al Franken, Don Lemon and Joe Walsh.

Beverly Hills entertainment attorney Mitra Ahouraian, who represents actors, directors, producers, writers and musicians, noted that Goldberg has found allies in Hollywood.

“Whoopi Goldberg’s reputation as someone who has said she identifies as Jewish took a real hit from her comment on ‘The View’ because it offended so many Jewish people,” Ahouraian told FOX Business. “This is something that, on some level, people will always remember about her. But they also will remember that she has been an ally to the Jewish people and since her apology she has found allies in Hollywood, with the ADL’s CEO Jonathan Greenblatt and even among political figures such as former Senator Al Franken.”

A brand expert told FOX Business that Whoopi Goldberg’s career likely won’t “end in carnage” following her comments on the Holocaust. (Lev Radin/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images)

“She can still bounce back from this and have a career in Hollywood,” she added. “The most important thing for Whoopi is to not jeopardize her future by feuding with ABC during her suspension. After that, she can use her appearances on ‘The View’ to repair the hurt she caused and to still be the funny, insightful comic we’ve all known.”

Brand expert Eric Schiffer told FOX Business that Goldberg’s admission of her mistake will likely help her career.

“Cancel culture won’t put the stake through Whoopi Goldberg and cause her to go combust,” Schiffer said. “Given her apology and admission of her mistake, Whoopi will weather the storm of the suspension and her career won’t end in carnage.”

Despite her support from others in the entertainment industry, many are wondering why Goldberg wasn’t swiftly fired. Roseanne Barr and Gina Carano were used as examples by many criticizing ABC’s decision to suspend the TV host.

“The stark difference is Whoopi is personally liked within ABC and by the left, and given the call by conservatives that Whoopi remain at ABC it gives execs cover to keep her on versus Gina and Rosanne who outraged liberals,” Schiffer explained to FOX Business.

CELEBRITIES REACT TO WHOOPI GOLDBERG’S HOLOCAUST COMMENTS ON ‘THE VIEW’

Ahouraian explained that in the event ABC does decide to oust Goldberg, they could fire her depending on the style of contract the TV host has with the network.

“In 2021, Whoopi Goldberg signed a deal with ABC to stay on ‘The View’ for an additional 4 years,” Ahouraian explained to FOX Business. “However, most TV contracts allow producers or networks to fire you for a host of reasons and sometimes none at all. If Whoopi had what’s referred to in Hollywood as a pay-or-play deal, ABC would have to pay her through the end of her contract if they let her go, in other words if she doesn’t ‘play.’ But even with a pay-or-play, the studio or network would have an out depending on how aggressive their deal was.”

“We’ve all heard of a ‘morals clause,’ which allows companies to fire people in the event of criminal activity or other allegations, and became increasingly popular in light of situations of sexual harassment,” she further explained. “A contract can expand this to include conduct that is immoral, scandalous and obscene, or even broader language that can allow a company to fire you if they decide you tarnish, damage or otherwise negatively affect the reputation of the company and the goodwill associated with it. Language like this would allow ABC to not only fire Whoopi, but not pay her a dime even if she had a pay-or-play deal.”

On Monday, Goldberg admitted her mistake in her apology on Twitter.

“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.’ I should have said it is about both,” Goldberg wrote in a statement. “As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people – who they deemed to be an inferior race.’ I stand corrected.”

Whoopi Goldberg’s Holocaust remarks need to be a ‘teaching moment’ for ‘The View,’ ABC: rabbi says

Whoopi Goldberg‘s suspension from “The View” following her controversial remarks about the Holocaust welcomes an “important” opportunity for ABC to take accountability and demonstrate a “national teaching moment,” Rabbi Abraham Cooper of Los Angeles’ Simon Wiesenthal Center says.

Speaking to Fox News Digital Friday, the associate dean and director of Global Social Action for the Jewish human rights organization said he believes Goldberg’s suspension was appropriate, but there’s more to be done. He also shared his view that Goldberg is “not an anti-Semite.”

“Whoopi Goldberg knows our center. She knows Rabbi Marvin Hier, our CEO and founder,” Rabbi Cooper said. “We’re not dealing with someone here who spoke in order to hurt anyone in our community. But what she said obviously is extremely confusing to people and in many ways hurtful.”

“Whoopi Goldberg has been held accountable for her speech. That’s fine. Now, ABC puts ‘The View’ on air, so ABC also has to take some responsibilities as the platform that delivered that information.”

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has welcomed 7 million people through its doors since it opened in 1977, the rabbi said. The center teaches about racism, about the genocide of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. Some 180,000 police officers have also been trained there.

Rabbi Cooper shared that the center reached out to Goldberg the morning after her on-air comments sparked controversy. He’s now informing ABC that “The View” is “welcome anytime.”

“The most important thing now is where did this idea [Goldberg shared] come from? And why it’s wrong,” the rabbi said.

Cooper said the Simon Weisenthal Center’s educational arm, the Museum of Tolerance, has a 300-seat theater and is a fitting place for “The View” to film from.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG ISSUES APOLOGY FOR HOLOCAUST COMMENTS: ‘I STAND CORRECTED’

“ABC is welcome to come broadcast here for a week from the Museum of Tolerance. Maybe one or two of those days might be town hall meetings. Let people express themselves. It’s not about suppressing speech. It’s a matter of now an important learning moment that needs to be grabbed. All of that cannot be just on the shoulders of one person who misspoke,” Cooper said.

“The best result of all of this will be that millions of Americans will be able to understand why [Goldberg] was wrong, where did that all come from and how do we fight racism and hate together.”

The rabbi also spoke of the uptick in hate crimes in recent years, specifically against Jewish communities.

“We’re in a crisis mode on anti-Semitism,” he said. “I think part of the visceral reaction from the Jewish community when this statement was made is, we’re already on edge in terms of what’s going on with these hate crimes. Over the last four decades, the American Jewish communities have probably spent hundreds of millions of dollars to secure the physical safety of people coming to synagogue on Friday night or Saturday, of our kids going to Jewish schools, of people going to a Jewish community center.”

In terms of how “The View” should handle the controversy moving forward, the rabbi said the next step is “really up to ABC.” He’s also hoping that the ABC talk show doesn’t conclude the discussion on this with a “three-minute thing at the beginning and then say, ‘We’re moving on.'”

“There’s an important opportunity here for a national teaching moment,” he concluded.

ABC News President Kim Goodwin announced Goldberg’s two-week suspension in a statement Tuesday.

“Effective immediately, I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her wrong and hurtful comments. While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends and communities,” the statement says.

Goldberg went viral on Monday when she argued that the Holocaust “isn’t about race,” stunning her colleagues at the table.

“What is it about?” co-host Joy Behar asked.

“It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about,” Goldberg said.

“But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies,” guest co-host Ana Navarro said as Goldberg attempted to speak over her.

“But these are two White groups of people,” Goldberg said, her colleagues disagreeing.

Goldberg attempted to explain her remarks during an appearance on “The Late Show.”

“It upset a lot of people which was never, ever, ever, ever my intention … I thought we were having a discussion,” Goldberg told Stephen Colbert. “I think of race as being something that I can see … You couldn’t tell who was Jewish. They had to delve deeply to figure it out … My point is, they had to do the work.”

She also told Colbert, “I don’t want to fake apologize … I’m very upset that people misunderstood what I was saying.”

Piers Morgan makes Sharon Osbourne claim after Whoopi Goldberg’s Holocaust remarks

Piers Morgan has jumped to Sharon Osbourne’s defence while criticising Whoopi Goldberg for her controversial comments about the Holocaust on The View.

On Monday (31 January), Goldberg and her co-hosts Joy Behar, Sara Haines and Ana Navarro discussed a Tennessee school board choosing to ban Maus, a graphic novel about the Holocaust.

After talking about the graphic novel, Goldberg said: “Let’s be truthful about it because the Holocaust isn’t about race. No. It’s not about race.”

When Behar and Navarro countered Goldberg’s argument, the Sister Act star doubled down, stating: “But you’re missing the point! You’re missing the point. The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let’s talk about it for what it is. It’s how people treat each other. That’s the problem.”

She continued “It doesn’t matter if you are Black or white because Black, white, Jews, Italians, everybody eats each other. So is it – if you are uncomfortable if you hear about Maus, should you be worried – should your child say, ‘Oh my God, I wonder if that’s me?’ No. That’s not what they’re going to say. They’re going to say, ‘I don’t want to be like that.’”

As the episode then went to a commercial, Goldberg repeated: “To learn about man’s inhumanity to man, however it exposes itself.”

Goldberg has been widely criticised for he comments, which were branded “ignorant”, and has since apologised for hurting Jewish people “around the world”.

The Holocaust is widely defined as the state-sanctioned extermination of Jews by Nazi Germany across Europe during the Second World War. It is estimated that around six million Jews were killed, as well as millions of others including foreigners, disabled people and homosexuals.

Now, Morgan has weighed in, drawing a parallel to the treatment of his friend Osbourne, who was fired from similar chat show The Talk after she was accused of racism.

Amid the controversy surrounding Goldberg’s comments on The View, Morgan wrote on Twitter: “Sharon Osbourne was fired from The Talk for defending me against a fake charge of racism.

“Whoopi Goldberg said on The View yesterday that the Holocaust ‘wasn’t about race’, which for Jewish people is about as racist a comment as anyone could make. Bet she doesn’t lose her job.”

The incident involving Osbourne occurred in March 2021 after she defended Morgan’s remarks about Meghan Markle’s televised interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Osbourne raised her voice at co-host Sheryl Underwood, saying: “I will ask you again Sheryl… and don’t try and cry because if anyone should be crying, it should be me… You tell me where you have heard him say racist things.”

After the broadcast, Osbourne shared a lengthy Twitter post, saying that she’d been “reflecting” on the incident and wanted to apologise to any Black viewers she had offended.

Following an internal investigation by CBS, Osbourne was fired from the series.
