Beyoncé Performs First Concert In Years For Influencers On Luxury Dubai Getaway

After Beyoncé’s critically and commercially acclaimed Renaissance LP dropped last summer, the singer has not officially announced any tour dates in support. That said, this weekend Beyoncé hosted an all-expenses-paid luxury getaway in Dubai for journalists and influencers. The invite is ostensibly for the unofficial opening of Atlantis The Royal hotel and reads (per Pitchfork): “Beyoncé invites you to a weekend where your dreams become your destination. You and a guest are invited for epicurean feasts, beachside indulgences, and special reveal experiences including business class airfare, first-class ground transportation, and first-class accommodations at Atlantis The Royal.”

Airbnb apologizes for Mississippi ‘slave cabin’ listed as luxury getaway after viral TikTok video

Comment

The Airbnb listing in Mississippi seemingly had everything a traveler could ask for in a bed-and-breakfast accommodation: a suite with exquisite antique furnishings, soft linens, a brand-new bathroom and access to Netflix on the smart TV.

But there was something else about the Panther Burn Cottage that the luxury listing proudly advertised: The property was an “1830s slave cabin” that housed enslaved people at a plantation in Greenville, Miss.

Airbnb has faced backlash in the days since a TikTok video about the listing from Wynton Yates, an entertainment and civil rights attorney in New Orleans, went viral.

“The history of slavery in this country is constantly denied,” Yates said in the Friday video, “and now it’s being mocked by being turned into a luxurious vacation spot.” Yates, who is Black, added, “This is not okay in the least bit.”

Now, Airbnb has apologized and noted Monday that it is “removing listings that are known to include former slave quarters in the United States.”

“Properties that formerly housed the enslaved have no place on Airbnb,” Airbnb spokesman Ben Breit said in a statement. “We apologize for any trauma or grief created by the presence of this listing, and others like it, and that we did not act sooner to address this issue.”

Brad Hauser, who took over ownership of the Greenville property last month, said in a statement to The Washington Post that even though the building had been a doctor’s office and not a quarters for enslaved people, it was “the previous owner’s decision to market the building as the place where slaves once slept.” Hauser, who is White, said he “strongly opposed” the previous owner’s decision and vowed to provide guests with a “historically accurate portrayal” of life at the Belmont Plantation.

“I am not interested in making money off slavery,” said Hauser, 52, who apologized for the listing “insulting African Americans whose ancestors were slaves.”

It’s unclear how many Airbnb listings feature properties in the United States that once housed some of the millions of enslaved Black people. Several properties in Georgia and Louisiana that were billed as quarters for enslaved people have since been removed from Airbnb’s site, according to Mic.

‘These are our ancestors’: Descendants of enslaved people are shifting plantation tourism

Yates, 34, told The Post on Tuesday that he was first made aware of the Greenville listing in a group text message. Yates said his brother’s friend was looking for rental properties in Greenville, about 100 miles northwest of Columbia, S.C., and found that the Panther Burn Cottage was the only listing available.

So when Yates’s brother shared the listing in the family group text Friday, the New Orleans attorney was floored by it and had the same thought: “This is crazy.”

“To see weddings on plantations and events on plantations and suburbs and subdivisions named after plantations and plantation owners is something I’ve been grossed out by every day of my life. But this was a new level of disrespect for what slavery was,” Yates said. “To see the space where enslaved peoples lived being renovated into a luxurious space and rented out just took my breath away.”

Screenshots of the listing show the cabin is next to a 9,000-square-foot mansion that has nine bedrooms and eight bathrooms. Built in 1857, the luxury structure is “the last remaining antebellum mansion standing” in the Mississippi Delta, according to the listing.

Then, the listing references the history surrounding the much smaller cottage.

“This particular structure, the Panther Burn Cabin, is an 1830s slave cabin from the extant Panther Burn Plantation to the south of Belmont,” the listing reads. “It has also been used as a tenant sharecroppers cabin and a medical office for local farmers and their families to visit the plantation doctor.”

The previous owner noted in the listing that the cabin was moved to the Belmont Plantation in 2017 and “meticulously restored,” while keeping some of the cypress boards used in the original built in the 1830s. The Panther Burn Cottage was advertised on the Airbnb listing as “the last surviving structure from the fabled Panther Burn Plantation.”

Despite the history of enslaved people living in the cabin, Yates pointed out in his TikTok video how it didn’t deter guests who stayed there from leaving glowing reviews of the “memorable” listing. Hauser, through a representative, said the reviews are for an unrelated property in Arkansas and not the Greenville listing.

“Enjoyed everything about our stay,” one woman commented in July 2021.

“We stayed in the cabin and it was historic but elegant,” another wrote last October.

“What a delightful place to step into history, Southern hospitality, and stay a night or two!” one guest said in March.

The contrast between the Panther Burn Cottage housing about 80 enslaved Black people in the 1800s and White people today using it as a cute, luxury vacation spot is “mind-blowing,” Yates said.

“It was built by enslaved people and lived in by enslaved people where they died from being overworked, infectious diseases, hunger and heartbreak. They died in those spaces,” Yates told The Post. “It wasn’t a comfortable situation.”

After Yates’s TikTok video on the “slave cabin” was viewed more than 2.6 million times, Airbnb said it was not only removing all listings promoted as former quarters for enslaved people but also “working with experts to develop new policies that address other properties associated with slavery.”

Hauser told The Post that when he initially inquired about the building behind Belmont, the previous owner told him it was not a cabin for enslaved people and was not being advertised as such. He said he was “misled” about the cabin, and noted how Airbnb and Booking.com had suspended advertising contracts with the Belmont “pending further investigation.”

“I intend to do all I can to right a terrible wrong and, hopefully, regain advertising on Airbnb so The Belmont can contribute to the most urgent demand for truth telling about the history of the not only the South but the entire nation,” Hauser said in a statement.

Yates said he doesn’t know whether Airbnb’s apology will amount to situations like the Panther Burn Cottage being avoided in the future. When asked what he would tell property owners with buildings that once housed enslaved Black people, Yates had a clear message: “Stop romanticizing the experience of slavery.”

“Because that’s exactly what this is,” he said. “This is profiting off of slavery.”

Rob Kardashian is enjoying a tropical getaway with his favorite girls.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians alum, 35, shared some sweet photos of his 5½-year-old daughter Dream Renée from their vacation to “Kamp Koko” to celebrate his sister Khloé Kardashian’s recent 38th birthday.

“Paradise with Dream,” he wrote in the caption, sharing photos of their gorgeous ocean view and Dream playing with her cousins, as well as a snap of his feet propped up on a flight.

Khloé also gave a glimpse of their upscale travel, sharing a photo of herself and daughter True Thompson, 4, boarding her sister Kylie Jenner’s private jet, which was decorated with pink balloons that spelled out “Koko.”

“Wheels Up on Kylie Air 💕 Kamp KoKo is underway,” Khloé captioned the post, including a video montage of the flight.

Rob’s father/daughter vacation comes after his famous family won a defamation lawsuit in May, which was taken out by his ex-fiancée and Dream’s mother Blac Chyna. The 34-year-old accused Rob’s mom Kris Jenner and his sisters Khloé, Kylie and Kim Kardashian of sabotaging her E! deal after the exes’ reality series Rob & Chyna was cancelled in 2017 after one season.

A source told PEOPLE ahead of the trial that Rob “tries to ignore any drama with Blac Chyna” and is “focused on being a great dad” to Dream.

“Rob’s family really loves her,” the insider added. “Rob spends a lot of time with Dream. She brings him a lot of joy. She is in preschool and doing great.”

Last month, the pair settled another lawsuit, which Chyna filed against Rob after he posted revenge porn of her in July 2017, following their split and the show’s subsequent cancellation.

Rob and Chyna began dating in January 2016 and announced their engagement that April, before welcoming Dream on Nov. 10 of that same year. After briefly splitting a month later, they officially called off their engagement in February 2017.

Holiday getaway pushes US airport traffic to pandemic high

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The Fourth of July holiday weekend is jamming U.S. airports with their biggest crowds since the pandemic began in 2020.

About 2.49 million passengers went through security checkpoints at U.S. airports Friday, surpassing the previous pandemic-era record of 2.46 million reached earlier in the week, according to figures released Saturday by the Transportation Security Administration.

The escalating numbers show leisure travelers aren’t being deterred from flying by rising fares, the ongoing spread of COVID-19 or worries about recurring flight delays and cancellations.

Friday’s passenger volume marked a 13% increase from July 1 last year, which fell on the Thursday before Fourth of July. This year’s number of passengers going through U.S. airports also eclipsed the 2.35 million screened at security checkpoints on the Friday before the Fourth of July in 2019, but that was nearly a week ahead of Independence Day.

In a more telling sign of how close U.S. air travel is reverting back to pre-pandemic conditions, an average of 2.33 million passengers have passed through security checkpoints at domestic airports during the seven days ending July 1. That was close to the seven-day average of roughly 2.38 million passengers during the same 2019 period, according to the TSA.

But airlines have struggled to keep up with the surging demand amid staffing shortages and an assortment of other issues that have resulted in recurring waves of exasperating flight delays and cancellations that have been transforming some vacations into nightmarish ordeals.

Many airlines, including Delta, Southwest and JetBlue, have responded to the challenge by curtailing their summer schedules in an effort to reduce the inconveniences — and backlash — caused by flight delays and cancellations They are using larger planes on average to carry more passengers while they scramble to hire and train more pilots.

The headaches continued Friday, although they weren’t as bad as they have been at other times in recent months. There were more than 6,800 flight delays and another 587 flight cancellations affecting U.S. airports Friday, according to the tracking site FlightAware.

The trouble spilled into Saturday, too, with thunderstorms complicating things on the East Coast and parts of the Midwest. By late Saturday, nearly 4,000 flights had been delayed and more than 600 had been canceled at U.S. airports, according to FlightAware.

Besides the flight delays and cancellations, travelers also have had to pay higher prices for tickets driven up by soaring fuel costs and other inflationary factors, as well as navigate around the health risks posed by continuing COVID-19 infections.

The travel bug is also congesting highways, even with the national average price for gasoline hovering around $5 per gallon — and above $6 per gallon in California and all its popular tourist attractions. AAA predicts that nearly 48 million people will travel at least 50 miles or more from home over the weekend, slightly fewer than in 2019.

A New Zealand parrot stole a GoPro and filmed its getaway

(CNN) — A New Zealand family got an unexpected bird’s eye view of a trail they had just hiked in Fiordland National Park, South Island, after a mischievous parrot stole their GoPro and took flight.

The Verheul family, from Dunedin in the southeast of the country, had just finished exploring part of the Kepler Track when a kea — a native New Zealand species — grabbed their GoPro and flew off over woodland.

They had turned on the device to film a group of the curious birds, who had joined them outside of the hut they were staying at, Alex Verheul said in interview with broadcaster Seven Sharp on Thursday.

But one cheeky kea took flight with it, capturing aerial footage of the landscape before settling on some ground and tapping at the gadget repeatedly with its beak.

At one point, the bird can be seen ripping off a chunk of plastic from the camera casing.

Remarkably, the GoPro survived its ordeal — a family member heard the clamor and ran in the direction of the squawking to recover it.

Handily, Verheul told Seven Sharp, the bird had flown in a straight line, so they were able to track it down.

“We just followed the sound, went down there, could see them hanging out in the tree. They’d obviously heard us coming and abandoned the GoPro — and my son, he decided to go check the rocks… and there it was, just sitting there, still filming.”

“I downloaded (the footage) onto my phone… It was amazing. It was totally unexpected.”

The next day, she added, a kea stole a cup from a backpack, too.

CNN has reached out to Verheul for further comment.

Food insecurity rate on Nantucket — Biden’s Thanksgiving getaway location — saw 70% increase in 2021: report

The food insecurity rate on Nantucket, Massachusetts — where President Biden celebrated Thanksgiving at a billionaire’s mansion — has increased by more than 70% in 2020, according to a local health assessment.

Food insecurity in the entire state of Massachusetts was projected to increase by 81% this year, with the second-largest percentage of children at risk of food insecurity, in 2020, according to the Nantucket Community Health Needs Assessment for the 2021 fiscal year.

“Nantucket county was identified as one of four counties that have seen their projected food insecurity rates increase by over 70.0%,” the assessment states. “The Mind the Meal Gap 2020 report also indicates that 1:4 food-insecure children are living in homes that are ineligible for public assistance programs.”

The report notes that a “large number of residents” on the island “do not have documented residency status.”

Nantucket’s unemployment rate, by comparison, is better than other Massachusetts counties at just 2.9%, and over 3% of Nantucket families have brought in an income below the federal poverty line over the last 12 months, the health assessment says.

BIDEN SPENDING THANKSGIVING AT BILLIONAIRE’S NANTUCKET HOME SHOWS HE’S OUT OF TOUCH, REPUBLICANS SAY

Nantucket Current reporter Jason Graziadei highlighted the island’s efforts to feed those in need in a series of Thursday tweets.

“Around the corner from Secret Service agents protecting the leader of the free world, steps away from the mainland news crews debating the optics of@POTUS staying in the home of a billionaire, the volunteers of the #Nantucket Food Pantry were quietly going about their work today,” he wrote.

Graziadei continued: “Nantucket will be called ‘posh’ and ‘tony’ in the national media this week, but there at the Food Pantry, the goal was simply to feed the island’s low-income residents and take on the growing food insecurity among Nantucket’s working class.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 5.5% of Nantucket County’s population is experiencing poverty. The county’s median income was $107,717 between 2015 and 2019, and its income per capita was $55,398 in 2019.

BIDEN REPEATS ‘AMERICA IS BACK’ MESSAGE ON MOST EXPENSIVE THANKSGIVING IN HISTORY

Nantucket Food Pantry manager Yeshe Palmo told the reporter that volunteers distributed 130 turkeys and various side dishes on Thanksgiving.

The Community Foundation for Nantucket in October received a $1.85 million state grant to address food insecurity on the island, according to The Inquirer and Mirror.

The Bidens touched down on Nantucket Tuesday night and spent Thanksgiving at the compound of David Rubenstein, a Carlyle Group co-founder.

Spending Thanksgiving in Nantucket is a tradition of the Biden family dating back decades, but it was put on hold last year due to the pandemic. The White House told reporters earlier Tuesday that the Bidens have previously stayed at Rubenstein’s home.

Meanwhile, inflation has hit a three-decade high and the average cost of this year’s classic Thanksgiving feast has jumped more than 14% from last year’s average, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual Thanksgiving dinner cost survey. That’s in large part because the cost of a turkey is up nearly 24% from last year. The cost of chicken breasts, meanwhile, has jumped 26% over the past year, according to Labor Department data.

The industry has largely blamed the price spike on supply chain disruptions and high demand for food, particularly meat.

Fox News’ Jessica Chasmar contributed to this report.
