Georgia Tech fires Geoff Collins after 1-3 start to fourth season, AD also ousted amid upheaval, per report

Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury were fired on Monday, just two days after a 27-10 road loss to UCF sent the Yellow Jackets to 1-3 in Collins’ fourth season. The two were informed of the decision by school president Angel Cabrera, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Collins is expected to receive a buyout in the range of $11.3 million, according to ESPN. Associate head coach Brent Key will serve as interim coach for the remainder of the season, according to The Athletic.

The loss sent Collins to 10-28 (7-19 ACC) at GT with the program struggling to show any improvement during his tenure. Stansbury had served as AD for Georgia Tech since 2016 following previous stints at Oregon State and UCF.

Upon being hired away from Temple, Collins faced a difficult task: Moving Georgia Tech’s offense away from the option-based attack that Paul Johnson installed during his 11-year run with the program. That provided Collins with some leeway; however, the Jackets never finished better than 10th in the ACC in total offense while winning just three games in each of his first three campaigns, and they struggled mightily to start the 2022 season.

This past offseason saw a wave of transfer portal action with Georgia Tech losing multiple key players, including star running back Jahmyr Gibbs to Alabama, while bringing in contributors to help bolster the roster in a must-improve season for Collins. However, in its three games against FBS opponents (Clemson, Ole Miss, UCF), Georgia Tech has been outscored 110-20.

Collins is the third Power Five coach who has been fired in the first month of the 2022 season after Nebraska rid itself of Scott Frost and Arizona State parted with Herm Edwards. Both Frost and Edwards were in their fifth years with their respective programs.

A failed strategy

When Collins came to Georgia Tech, he saw recruits leaving the city of Atlanta as perhaps the most existential issue facing the program. He spruced up the program by bringing the city to the forefront and embracing Atlanta staples like the “404” area code and Waffle House. It brought some success as 30 of the 53 recruits he signed were from Georgia.

Unfortunately, few of his players ended up reaching their potential under his tutelage. The Yellow Jackets landed just two All-ACC players in 2021. Both left as Gibbs transferred and Quez Jackson graduated. Tech ranks bottom-two in the ACC in offense, defense, scoring offense, scoring defense and even field goal kicking. Trying to provide some wins on the recruiting trail was nice, but the program has bottomed out under Collins’ leadership.

Is an investment coming?

One of the biggest benefits of the Johnson option era is that it allowed Georgia Tech to take a backseat on the recruiting trail. Especially in the rough-and-tumble Southeast, the Jackets’ lack of investment sticks out like a sore thumb. Georgia Tech spent $27.2 million on football-specific expenses during the 2019-20 academic year, per Sportico. That ranked the Jackets 40th among public institutions, a spot behind Kansas State and sixth out of eight public schools in the ACC. For comparison, rival Georgia spend $48.5 million a year on football on the books.

Collins failed to convert sizzle into steak during his four years at Georgia Tech. The administration must decide what it wants its football program to be long term, and what it is willing to invest in the program to make it happen — especially in an era where every Power Five team outside the Big Ten and SEC is existentially on the chopping block.

Coaching carousel keeps spinning

There were plenty of questions about how the early signing period and transfer portal would transform the coaching cycle. Two years in, the ride is spinning faster than ever. Just four weeks into the season, three Power Five programs have already made changes. Last year, LSU and USC both fired coaches before October, as did UConn and Georgia Southern. Amazingly, Georgia Southern and Texas Tech both fired coaches and hired external full-time replacements before the season even ended.

Players only have four years of eligibility to make their mark on college football, but programs are waving the white flag on seasons earlier than ever. It will be interesting to see whether all this movement ultimately leads to some guardrails to avoid tanking the limited collegiate careers of countless college football players.

Georgia Tech coaching candidates: Deion Sanders, Todd Monken lead options to replace Geoff Collins

Geoff Collins had it all: money, a future and a plan at Georgia Tech. A Star Wars nerd, he planned to weaponize recruiting in the Atlanta region for little ol’ Georgia Tech. Except … none of it came to fruition. Instead, the Yellow Jackets floundered following the exit of 11-year stalwart Paul Johnson, and moving on from the triple option was only the least of Collins’ problems as he attempted to turnaround the program.

There was a time when Georgia Tech was considered prime expansion territory for the Big Ten. Not anymore. GT became punchless on offense, Collins never matched the promise he developed as a defensive coordinator at Mississippi State and Florida, and after a 1-3 start in his fourth season (10-28 overall) with no better than three wins in his prior campaigns, he got shown the door.

Let’s take a look at the top candidates to replace Collins in Atlanta.

Deion Sanders, Jackson State coach: Coach Prime might actually work in a crowded media market where Deion was adored as a member of the Falcons and Braves. After a 4-3 record in his first COVID-19 shortened season with the Tigers, Coach Prime led Jackson State to an 11-2 record (9-0 SWAC) in his second campaign. The Tigers are 4-0 to start 2022 while outscoring opponents 190-37. It makes too much sense.

Shawn Clark, Appalachian State coach: Being a Sun Belt coach potentially stepping up to the Power Five level would be a concern as Scott Satterfield is already struggling at Louisville. But Clark’s energy is undeniable, and it’s clear he has the Mountaineers buying into his philosophy.

Todd Monken, Georgia offensive coordinator: Monken was last mentioned in this space a week ago when Arizona State fired Herm Edwards. He has developed Stetson Bennett, won a national championship and sure as heck knows what’s wrong with Tech. He game plans against them each season.

Tyson Helton, Western Kentucky coach: This offensive mind is ready to make the leap to a moribund program. Clay’s brother is 26-17 in four seasons leading the Hilltoppers. The Gainesville, Florida, product who has coached at UAB and Tennessee, he has a lot of experience in the surrounding area.

Jamey Chadwell, Coastal Carolina coach: If Chadwell does not snag one of the top available jobs this cycle, it will be legitimate to ask whether he waited to long to make the jump. He’s not Brent Venables, after all. His success with the Chanticleers is undeniable taking the program from 8-16 across his first two campaigns to 25-3 over his last three seasons.

Andy Kotelnicki, Kansas offensive coordinator: Lance Leipold is going to hate me for including him, but Kotelnicki is a chess master with innovative set pieces. He’d kill overseeing the whole show at a Power Five program in a recruiting hotbed.

Geoff Keighley Says A Few Other Big Video Game Deals Are In The “Final Stages Of Negotiations”

Image: The Game Awards

Sony has already mentioned how there’ll be more acquisitions from PlayStation in the near future, and that might not be all.

According to The Game Awards creator and host, Geoff Keighley – there are a “few other big video game deals” currently in the final stages of negotiations. He’s apparently heard this from multiple sources:

VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb has also chimed in – noting in the latest GamesBeat Decides podcast how there are more acquisitions to come. Co-host Mike Minotti has also said there’s another acquisition on the “bigger side” on the way (thanks, Pure Xbox).

While it’s unclear what exactly the next lot of acquisitions might be, a lot of speculation seems to suggest it’s Xbox’s turn to make a move. Nintendo – at least for now – seems to be watching all of this unfold from the sideline.

You can read more about Sony’s latest acquisition (Bungie) in yesterday’s post.

Geoff Keighley Teases ‘Four or Five’ Elden Ring Calibre Showcases for The Game Awards

Geoff Keighley is a hype merchant of masterful degrees, and the journalist turned host has once again been bigging up his upcoming The Game Awards livestream. The show – which will air this week – typically combines acknowledgement of the industry’s achievements with announcements and “world premieres”, and it sounds like the formula won’t be changing in its latest incarnation.

Speaking about the Elden Ring re-reveal, which Keighley delivered as part of his Summer Game Fest event earlier in the year, he hinted that we should expect more reveals on a similar scale during The Game Awards this week: “Oh God, there are probably four or five things of that level. I can’t wait to show people this stuff.”

It’s a cunning statement from Keighley, of course, because this sort of thing is always subjective. However, it’s undeniable Elden Ring generated significant hype, so it’s hard to think of anything that could match that level of enthusiasm – let along “four or five” of them. Then again, this is the same show that played host to the reveal of the Xbox Series X in the past, so there’s clearly precedent for major reveals.

The proof will be in the pudding, but keep your expectations on the ground just in case – it’s better to be pleasantly surprised, after all. You can find out when to watch The Game Awards through the link, and of course we’ll have live chat right here on Push Square if you want to enjoy it with us.

Geoff Keighley’s Game Awards Return To In-Person Events This December

Image: The Game Awards

The Game Awards are like nerd Christmas, and Geoff Keighley is Santa Claus. He’s also the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy, and he’s replacing your dad, and the voice in your head, too. He’s everywhere these days, after all: Summer Game Fest, Gamescom, that one THQ Nordic livestream, Death Stranding, and apparently The Muppets Haunted Mansion. Quite the busy chap.

But of course he’s hosting The Game Awards, since that’s his baby: the awards show that usually brings multiple game announcements, exclusives, and premieres to our screens every December.

Last year’s event was broadcast virtually, with no in-person audience, but this year’s awards will return to the Los Angeles Microsoft Theatre.

For 2020’s Game Awards, the big winner of the night was The Last of Us II, which won Game of the Year as well as six other awards. The PlayStation also won big, with Sony Interactive Entertainment sweeping up nine awards as publisher. Presenters included Reggie Fils-Aimé, Troy Baker, Keanu Reeves, Tom Holland, Gal Gadot, and Nintendo Life favourite, Brie Larson, as well as Keighley’s new pal and co-worker Swedish Chef. Performances from Eddie Vedder, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and video game band OFK also featured.

In past years, the Game Awards has been criticised for announcing many of its awards and winners either in the pre-show or as a rapid-fire list in one go, as well as for awarding games that have been criticised for worker’s rights violations.

The 2020 Game Awards had 83 million streams, with a peak of 8.3 million concurrent viewers.

Who do you think will win GOTY this year? Let us know in the comments.
