Florida Gators QB Jalen Kitna Posts Bond, Released From Alachua County Jail

Photo: Jalen Kitna; Alex Shepherd

UPDATE: Florida Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Kitna posted an $80,000 bond, according to Edgar Thompson of the Orlando Sentinel, and was released from the Alachua County Jail on Thursday evening.

Kitna is no longer listed as “in custody,” according to the Alachua County Clerk of Circuit Court, and his profile has been removed from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office Inmate Search.

Kitna’s bond was set on Thursday during his first court appearance. He faces five preliminary charges related to child pornography: Two second-degree counts of distribution of child exploitation material and three third-degree counts of possession of child pornography.

UPDATE: Florida Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Kitna made his first appearance in Alachua County Court on Thursday after his arrest on Wednesday for five preliminary felony charges relating to child pornography possession and distribution.

Kitna appeared via video stream from the Alachua County Jail. His parents, Jon and Jennifer Kitna, and his pastor were present in court.

According to WUFT-Gainesville, Kitna’s bond was set at $80,000 despite pleas from his lawyer, Caleb Kenyon, to release Kitna without bail, claiming no individuals were directly victimized by Kitna’s alleged actions.

Kitna previously admitted to sharing two images containing child sexual abuse material to the social media website Discord in an interview with Gainesville Police Department Detective Donna Montague. A search warrant of Kitna’s conducted on Wednesday led to the discovery of three additional images of child sexual abuse material in his possession upon preliminary analysis of Kitna’s electronic devices.

Alachua County Court Judge Meshon T. Rawls denied Kenyon’s request and ordered Kitna to not use the internet and have no unsupervised contact with minors.

If convicted of the charges — the State Attorney’s office will determine whether to formally file criminal charges or not in the coming weeks, after his preliminary charges read of three counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of distribution of child exploitation material  — Kitna faces up to 45 years in prison and $35,000 in fines.

Kitna was dressed in a dark green, sleeveless gown that indicates he was on suicide watch during his appearance, officials said per WUFT.

UPDATE: Florida Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Kitna was charged on Wednesday with three counts of possession of child pornography and two counts of distribution of child exploitation material, the latter two charges being second-degree felonies, according to a statement from the Gainesville Police Department.

Per the police statement, a search warrant was served at Kitna’s place of residence in Gainesville on Wednesday morning after receiving a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Further investigation by Gainesville Police Department Detective Donna Montague uncovered two images containing child sexual abuse material shared to the social media website Discord from Kitna’s address. The investigation also revealed that the probable Discord account holder was Kitna.

Kitna’s electronic devices were seized as a part of the search warrant. Three additional images of child sexual abuse material were discovered upon preliminary analysis of those devices.

UF released the following statement on Wednesday afternoon, acknowledging that Kitna has been suspended from the program indefinitely.

“We are shocked and saddened to hear of the news involving Jalen Kitna. These are extremely serious charges and the University of Florida and the UAA have zero tolerance for such behavior.

“Jalen has been suspended indefinitely from the football program.”

Florida Gators redshirt freshman quarterback Jalen Kitna was booked into the Alachua County Jail at 3:20 pm ET on Wednesday, November 30.

Charges were not immediately made available for Kitna’s arrest.

Kitna, the son of former NFL quarterback Jon Kitna, signed with Florida as a member of the 2021 recruiting class. He did not take the field during his true freshman but emerged as the backup to starting signal-caller Anthony Richardson during the 2022 season, in which he appeared in four games and completed 10-of-14 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Kitna notably entered at a crucial point in the first half against FSU when Richardson was sidelined for a few plays due to injury.

The backup kept the drive alive in Richardson’s absence — albeit not recording a pass — as he was on the field for two third-down conversions and reeled off a six-yard rush of his own to push the ball into the red zone. That set up a go-ahead touchdown pass upon Richardson’s return to take a 14-7 lead in the first quarter.

The Burleson (Texas) High School product was expected to at least compete for a starting spot this offseason as a result, if Richardson elects to depart from the program for the NFL Draft, alongside redshirt sophomore Jack Miller III, true freshman Max Brown, incoming freshman quarterback Jaden Rashada and a potential transfer portal addition.

This story will be updated as further details emerge.

Florida State vs. Florida score, takeaways: No. 16 ‘Noles survive Gators in rivalry’s highest-scoring game

No. 16 Florida State ended a three-game losing streak to rival Florida on Friday night with a dramatic 45-38 victory behind quarterback Jordan Travis and a late defensive stand in the game’s final minute. Travis made big plays through the air and on the ground all night, while the Seminoles defense came up with a fourth-down stop in the final minute as the crowd at Doak Campbell Stadium reached fever pitch.

Gators QB Anthony Richardson’s heave to the end zone fell incomplete with 39 seconds left, turning the ball over to Florida State on downs and effectively ending the highest-scoring game of the rivalry’s storied history. What will be discussed for ages are two plays on the final drive, a fourth-and-18 pass interference called against FSU that extended Florida’s comeback attempt, and a clear facemask on Richardson that went uncalled during the aforementioned incomplete pass.

Richardson threw three touchdowns in the first 21 minutes of game action as the Gators jumped out to a 21-14 lead, but the redshirt sophomore later went cold with 11 consecutive incompletions. The third quarter proved particularly consequential as Florida State forced three straight three-and-outs against a Florida team that did not punt in the first half.

The win marks the first in the rivalry for third-year Florida State coach Mike Norvell, and he has Travis to thank for it. The redshirt junior threw for 270 yards and a touchdown and ran for 83 more yards and two more scores. Running back Trey Benson added three scores on the ground for the ‘Noles, who improved to 9-3 with the win.

Travis runs wild

In a game packed with momentum swings and highlight-reel plays, the elusive running of Travis stood out on a few occasions. With the Seminoles trailing 21-14 and facing a third-and-10 from the Florida 11-yard line in the second quarter, it appeared as though Florida was about to sack Travis for a significant loss. But as Travis retreated 18 yards behind the line of scrimmage, he managed to elude five different Florida defenders, including a couple who had more than one chance to bring him down. He finally slid down just short of the end zone and scored on the next play.

Then, in the third quarter, Travis replicated the play in a nearly identical situation. Facing a third-and-11 from the Florida 13-yard line, Travis took off and avoided multiple tacklers before sliding down just short of the goal-line. The play gave the Seminoles a first-and-goal and set up a touchdown run from Benson that put FSU ahead 31-24.

While Travis completed just 13 of 30 passes, he also came through with his arm in a key late situation. Facing a third-and-6 with the game tied at 38 in the fourth quarter, Travis found Johnny Wilson for a 21-yard completion to extend the drive that let to FSU’s game-winning score.

Closing with a bang

Florida State started 4-0 and rose to No. 23 in the AP Top 25 in the process. Then came adversity. Amid a bad run with injuries, the ‘Noles dropped three straight as pressure began to mount on Norvell. After consecutive losing seasons to begin his tenure, it appeared they might struggle just to make a bowl game in his third year. But since the bye week, which came after a 34-28 loss to Clemson on Oct. 15, the ‘Noles are a perfect 5-0.

While some of that success has corresponded with a lightening of the schedule, much of it came in dominant fashion. Entering Friday, FSU’s four-game winning streak featured four wins of 25 points or more. While the run of dominance ended with a tight game against the Gators, the Seminoles put their improvement on display in a national showcase spot against a bitter rival. With a bowl victory, Florida State can finish with 10 wins for the first time since 2016, which was Jimbo Fisher’s next-to-last year as coach.

Missing receivers

Florida wide receivers Ja’Quavion Fraziars, Xzavier Henderson, Justin Shorter, Thai Chiaokhiao-Bowman and Marcus Burke all missed the game due to injury, leaving Richardson with few proven targets in the passing game. In their absence, Richardson only completed passes to three players with a returning Ricky Pearsall serving as his primary target. The redshirt junior set a new career-high for yards receiving when he hauled in a 43-yard touchdown pass with 11:35 left in the second quarter. That was Richardson’s final completion until 4 minutes remained in the game.

Nonetheless, the Gators still managed to rally from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter behind a strong running attack. Trevor Etienne totaled 129 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, including a 45-yard touchdown run that tied the game with 7:41 remaining. Montrel Johnson Jr. added 85 yards and a score on the ground, while Richardson rushed for 41 yards. If the Gators are able to get healthier at receiver for their bowl game, their offense could be far less one-dimensional than it proved to be for much of Friday’s game.

Florida vs. Utah score, takeaways: Anthony Richardson stars as Gators upset No. 7 Utes in Billy Napier’s debut

One of college football’s marquee Week 1 matchups lived up to its billing Saturday night as Florida outlasted No. 7 Utah 29-26 in The Swamp to begin Gators coach Billy Napier’s tenure with a statement victory over the reigning Pac-12 champions. Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson put the Gators ahead on a 2-yard touchdown run with 1:25 remaining before linebacker Amari Burney intercepted star Utah QB Cameron Rising in the end zone with 17 seconds left to seal the victory.

In a game that went back and forth all night, Richardson stood out as the star both through the air and on the ground by repeatedly making clutch plays with his arm and legs. Making his first career home start in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida, the sophomore finished 17 of 24 passing for 168 yards, adding 103 yards rushing and three touchdowns on the ground. In addition to his go-ahead run in the final two minutes, his 45-yard touchdown scamper in the second quarter put Florida ahead 14-13 entering halftime.

Rising produced an impressive outing of his own, but could not lead the Utes to a game-tying field goal or potential game-wining touchdown on the final drive. Florida running back Montrell Johnson Jr. added 77 yards rushing on 12 carriers and a fourth-quarter touchdown, redeeming himself after a costly fumble on the Gators’ first drive of the game.

Utah entered the season with College Football Playoff aspirations, but those met early peril at the hands of a hungry Florida team that looked poised to put last season’s 6-7 record in the past as the Napier era gets underway.

What did we learn from the Gators’ dramatic victory over the Utes? Let’s break down three takeaways from Saturday night’s game.

Richardson is a star

Johnson and true freshman Trevor Etienne provided substantive contributions on the ground, and Arizona State transfer receiver Ricky Pearsall looked good in his debut, but Richardson was the clear MVP for the Gators. After fighting for the starting job last season with Emory Jones, who has since transferred to Arizona State, Richardson looked like one of the 2022 season’s potential breakout stars.

Though his three touchdown runs stood out, his 2-point conversion pass with 12:48 remaining may have been the play of the game. Richardson eluded a pair of pass rushers with a pump fake that bought him enough time to find Ja’Quavion Fraziars with a strike in the corner of the end zone.

The play put Florida ahead 22-19. Without the 2-point conversion, a mere field goal may have been enough to put Utah ahead in the final seconds, and Rising would likely have never taken the shot to the end zone that resulted in Burney’s game-clinching interception.

Utah’s new ceiling

Throughout the offseason, Utah was anointed the Pac-12’s best hope of snapping a CFP drought that dates to 2016. After going toe to toe with Ohio State in a Rose Bowl loss to cap the 2021 season, the Utes brought back 14 starters to one of the nation’s most-established programs under 18th-year coach Kyle Whittingham.

While a Week 1 loss doesn’t altogether eliminate Utah from CFP contention, it removes any margin for error and makes the task seem particularly daunting. However, Utah started 1-2 last season with losses to BYU and San Diego State and still managed to win the Pac-12.

With Oregon, USC and Washington all breaking in new head coaches, the Utes still have an excellent opportunity to repeat as conference champions. Once again, however, there’s little benefit of the doubt for a Pac-12 favorite when it comes to the playoff picture. With Utah’s loss, the conference is 1-8 against SEC teams in Week 1 over the last 11 seasons. Pac-12 teams were also ranked in seven of those eight losses.

Burney’s redemption

Florida’s defense looked improved under new co-coordinators Patrick Toney and Sean Spencer following Todd Grantham’s lackluster tenure in the role under previous head coach Dan Mullen. However, Utah had consistent success finding tight end Brant Kuithe, who finished with nine catches for 105 yards and a touchdown.

Often times, it was Burney who was matched up with Kuithe, a three-time All-Pac 12 performer. However, any shortcomings from the senior linebacker’s performance were more than atoned for with his game-saving interception. The fifth-year senior will be remembered as a hero for his diving snag with the game on the line.

Florida Gators give up school-record 42 points in first half to FCS program Samford

Parting ways with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham didn’t solve all of the Florida Gators’ problems.

Six days after coach Dan Mullen announced that Grantham was let go, the Gators gave up 42 points in the first half — the most Florida had ever allowed in the first two quarters — to FCS program Samford on Saturday.

The Gators pulled away in the second half for a 70-52 victory at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

“I’m an offensive guy, so I love scoring points,” Mullen told reporters Saturday. “Obviously, I don’t love giving up points, but love scoring points. Offensively, we needed guys to step up and guys to execute, and I think we did that today. I think our guys came out and executed. It ended up being a little shootout back-and-forth, and our offense kept responding and making plays.”

Added Mullen: “Calling a win disappointing is disrespectful to the game and our players.”

The Bulldogs, who haven’t beaten an SEC opponent since 1934, had 530 yards of offense, including 416 passing. They scored on five of their first six possessions to take a 42-35 lead at the half.

It was the most points ever scored by an FCS team against an SEC opponent, and it tied for the most ever allowed by a Power 5 team against such an opponent since the FBS/FCS split in 1978. Eastern Washington matched Samford’s scoring total in a 59-52 loss to Washington in 2014.

“One, you have to give [Samford] some credit,” Mullen said. “They are a team who is going to score points and throw the ball all over the place within their style. The biggest one, if there is disappointment in some of our guys, are the opportunities to make plays that they didn’t make. You know, there were a couple of missed tackles, a couple opportunities for sacks that we didn’t make, we ended up with penalties. … We have to get that cleaned up.”

Linebackers coach Christian Robinson was directing Florida’s defense for the first time on Saturday. Mullen also fired offensive line coach John Hevesy after last week’s embarrassing 40-17 loss at rebuilding South Carolina. Graduate assistant Mike Sollene was promoted to replace Hevesy for the remainder of the season.

“I thought they handled it really well,” Mullen said. “I met with them a couple times and told them to relax and be themselves. You have a great opportunity, so go take advantage of it. Don’t go out there and try to do too much. … Just be you. I just thought the two young guys today were really excited for that opportunity. They enjoyed it and found a way to win.”

According to research by ESPN Stats & Information, the Gators have allowed 175 points in their past four games, their most in a four-game stretch since 1917.

Florida’s woeful defensive performance sullied a brilliant outing by quarterback Emory Jones, who completed 28 of 34 passes for 464 yards with six touchdowns and ran for 86 yards with one score. Jones’ 544 yards of total offense surpassed the previous UF record of 533 yards set by Tim Tebow in his final college game, a 51-24 victory over Cincinnati in the 2010 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

“Just get guys together and just let them know that we have to go score every drive,” Jones said. “That’s what we planned on doing anyways. Just keeping that mindset and just trying to be on attack every drive and going out there and executing. It worked out for us.”

Georgia vs. Florida score, takeaways: No. 1 Dawgs rout Gators thanks to wild flurry of turnovers, scores

No. 1 Georgia throttled Florida 34-7 in a critical SEC East showdown as the blood rivals met in their annual neutral-site showdown in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs scored 21 points off of three Gators turnovers in the final 2:35 of the first half, transforming a meager 3-0 advantage into a rousing 24-0 lead entering halftime. At that point, the Dawgs put their game into cruise control.

Stetson Bennett IV got the start under center for Georgia ahead of JT Daniels, who missed his fourth straight game with a lat injury. Bennett went 10 of 19 for 161 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. It wasn’t the most impressive offensive performance, but he didn’t need to do much after that three-touchdown barrage.

Georgia actually lost the total yardage battle to Florida 355-354, but that stat is wildly deceiving given the Dawgs had this thing on ice at halftime. The Gators just could not get anything going offensively, and even when they did, they would miss field goals (0 of 2) or fail to convert fourth downs late.

Redshirt freshman QB Anthony Richardson got his first career start ahead of Emory Jones but simply couldn’t get comfortable. He was 12 of 20 for 82 yards with two interceptions (including a pick six), adding 26 yards rushing on 12 carries. Richardson has the skills to be a star on the ground, but UGA’s speed was too much too soon for the electric dual-threat weapon.

Georgia improves to 8-0 (6-0 SEC) on the season, while Florida falls to 4-4 (2-4 SEC) with losses in four of its last six games.

Here are the top takeaways from Saturday’s beatdown in Jacksonville:

Attack like a snake

The story of this game came in a wild span of less than 3 minutes to end the first half; it perfectly encapsulated exactly what this Georgia defense is all about. Linebacker Nakobe Dean intercepted Richardson for a 50-yard pick six with 7 seconds to go in the first half, bumping UGA’s lead to 24-0. It was the last big play in what was a wild close to the first half for the Bulldogs. In reverse order, LB Nolan Smith picked Richardson on the 40-yard line with 1:35 to play, and Bennett found Kearis Jackson for a 36-yard touchdown on the next play. That came 41 seconds after Smith stripped Richardson at the Florida 11-yard line with 2:11 to play while Richardson was pushing for extra yards. The Bulldogs took over, and running back James Cook punched it in on the first offensive play to make it a double-digit game.

Georgia took 2:09 seconds to turn a 3-0 game upside down and essentially stick a fork in the Gators. This is what Georgia’s defense can do: turn a game on its side in the drop of a hat and simply demoralize the opposition. It’s what allows Georgia’s offense to be conservative when it’s appropriate … and it’s almost always appropriate.

Defense doesn’t win championships anymore, “just enough” defense does. That’s a moving target based on a lot of factors, including the ability to play complimentary football. The Dawgs offense is effective because the defense always has the ability to flip the script quickly. It did just that on Saturday.

Dan Mullen’s quarterback issues continue

When Richardson trotted out to take the first snap of the game, it appeared that Florida’s quarterback controversy had been cleared up. That’s not the case anymore. Richardson’s aforementioned three turnovers were enough to create some doubt that he was ready for the spotlight. Then he got injured early in the third quarter, and Emory Jones filled in well enough to at least make Mullen think about who takes the snaps next week at South Carolina.

Jones was 10 of 14 for 112 yards through the air with 22 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground. Granted, most of that was when the game was out of reach, but he did come in and provide at least a minor spark, which can’t be said for pretty much anything else associated with the Gators.

Mullen is widely regarded as a great quarterback developer. It might be time to choose one and just go with it now that this is a lost season.

Bennett may be good enough

Can we stop doubting Bennett now? All the dude has done is fought his tail off, earned the spotlight and developed into an effective downfield threat who also has plenty of ability on the ground to make opposing defensive coordinators’ heads spin. He averaged 8.5 yards per pass on Saturday and came in averaging 12.1 yards per attempt. Those are just filthy numbers, especially for a guy who isn’t regarded as a major downfield threat.

The question now becomes whether coach Kirby Smart actually makes a change. Daniels didn’t play Saturday, but he is getting closer to being game-ready. When that happens, Smart has to keep Bennett in the lineup, especially if they both can play next week against Missouri. The Tigers don’t play a lick of defense and will provide a perfect opportunity for the two to settle it on the field.

Things are rolling with Bennett, though. It’ll take a Herculean effort for Daniels to unseat him. That’s the culture of competition that Smart likes to have within his program, and it will make the entire team better in the long run.

Rashad Torrence is a star

There was a bright spot for the Gators … and he shined very bright. Safety Rashad Torrence II had quite the afternoon on the banks of the St. John’s River. The sophomore defensive back had eight tackles, two interceptions and one fumble recovery for Florida. He was straight up flying all over the field.

Torrence almost single-handedly gave Florida the few chances it had to make this a competitive football game. Obviously, that didn’t happen with his team only converting one of those turnovers — the last one late in the fourth quarter — into points. Hey, at least the Gators preserved their NCAA-record streak of 418 consecutive games without suffering a shut out.

This performance from Torrence comes on the back of a career-high 15-tackle effort a few weeks ago against Vanderbilt. If you’re looking for the next star for what used to be DBU in Gainesville, Florida, well, Torrence is it.

Florida vs. LSU score: Tigers’ ground game, four interceptions overwhelm No. 20 Gators in shootout

USATSI

Florida and LSU provided yet another memorable chapter in their rivalry on Saturday. The Tigers upset the No. 20 Gators 49-42 at Tiger Stadium in a game that LSU coach Ed Orgeron desperately needed to keep his seat from getting any hotter. Tyrion Davis-Price’s 287 rushing yards were an LSU record and the most ever allowed by Florida to an opposing running back, breaking the previous mark of 238 yards set by Georgia legend Herschel Walker in 1980.

LSU’s defense wasn’t great, but it came away with four interceptions, the last one being a game-clinching pick by Damone Clark with just under two minutes remaining. The win improves LSU, a 12-point underdog at kickoff, to 4-3 and should momentary cool the hot seat for Orgeron, who still must navigate upcoming games against No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 5 Alabama, No. 17 Arkansas and No. 21 Texas A&M with an injury-depleted roster in the weeks ahead.

The loss will raise the temperature a bit around Florida, which is also 4-3 (2-3 SEC). The Gators opted to go with redshirt freshman Anthony Richardson at quarterback for much of the game after starter Emory Jones threw two interceptions. While Richardson provided a spark with three touchdowns through the air and another on the ground, he also threw two interceptions.

It appeared Florida may have flipped the momentum entering halftime, when Jones found Justin Shorter for a 42-yard touchdown on a heave during the final play of the first half. But Davis-Price couldn’t be stopped as an LSU rushing offense that entered ranked 127th in the FBS suddenly came alive.

Having lost three of its last five games, the Gators’ next opponent will be top-ranked Georgia in Jacksonville on Oct. 30.
