Olive Garden fires manager for time-off rant: ‘If your dog died … prove it’

Comment

The soup and breadsticks might be unlimited, but at one Olive Garden, something else was in short supply: a manager’s patience. The manager of a Kansas location of the Italian-food chain was recently fired after sending a message to employees threatening them over the number of times they were calling out of work and demanding proof of sickness, dead dogs and family emergencies.

“From now on, if you call off, you might as well go out and look for another job,” read the message to workers at a location in Overland Park, according to a local news report by KCTV5. “We are no longer tolerating ANY excuse for calling off.”

The manager, who was not named, demanded that staff provide evidence for any reason they might have for not making their shift. “If you’re sick, you need to come prove it to us. If your dog died, you need to bring him in and prove it to us. If it’s a ‘family emergency’ and you can’t say, too bad. Go work somewhere else.”

Restaurant refuses service to Christian group, citing staff ‘dignity’

A spokeswoman for Darden restaurants, which owns Olive Garden, confirmed to The Washington Post that the missive had been sent to employees and said that the restaurant fired the manager after learning about it.

“We strive to provide a caring and respectful work environment for our team members. This message is not aligned with our company’s values,” read a statement from the company. “We have parted ways with this manager.”

Although the Olive Garden manager’s approach might have been unreasonable and potentially unsafe (one point of calling out sick is that you don’t come into contact with co-workers, no?), many bosses might share the frustration about being short-staffed. A stew of sicknesses this winter, including RSV, covid, flu and the common cold are causing many workers to stay home. Parents, who are simultaneously facing child-care shortages, are particularly strained. More than 100,000 people in the United States missed work last month because of problems with their child care, which is the highest the number has ever been, even during the worst of the pandemic, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. And restaurants, already dealing with a labor shortage, might be hit harder by such absences.

Teofilo Reyes, chief program officer for the worker-advocacy group Restaurant Opportunities Center, says pressure by managers to curtail sick days is widespread — even if it’s not as overtly expressed as it was in the case of the Olive Garden. “It’s all too common,” he said. “And that was true even during the pandemic.” The group’s research has shown that many workers go to work sick, with many citing fear of losing income — and retaliation by employers.

Father-of-three captures spectacular images of Mars and the moon using telescope in his back garden

When you look up at the night sky from your garden, you might catch a glimpse of a few stars if you’re lucky.

But father-of-three James Flanagan wanted a better view, and pointed his ‘middle of the road’ telescope towards outer space to get a closer look.

He has since seen a lunar mountain range, the dusty red surface of Mars and swirling nebulas thousands of light years away, taking spectacular photos of them all.

The amateur astronomer said: ‘The furthest thing I’ve observed is Markarian’s Chain, which is a set of galaxies about 55 million light years away – so the light that formed that image left just after the dinosaurs went extinct.’

He added: ‘I’ve seen the rings of Saturn, the icecaps of Mars and mountain ranges on the moon, all from my back garden.’

Mr Flanagan, who used to be a city councillor, also snapped the Orion and Dumbbell nebulas – huge clouds of dust and gas in space – the second of which is 1,360 light years away.

Within our Solar System, he has observed Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and our moon in a lunar eclipse – all from his home in Tankerton, Whitstable.

The former politician’s love of stargazing began as a child after receiving a telescope for his birthday, but his interest was rekindled four years ago.

His telescope is fitted with two cameras – one for viewing planets, and another for looking further away at nebulas and galaxies.

HOW TO SEE MARS FROM THE UK THIS WEEK

Mars will be in opposition on Thursday morning – meaning it’ll be located in the opposite direction to the sun, relative to Earth.

It will appear bigger and brighter in the sky because it’ll be at its closest point to us – around 50 million miles (81 million km) away.

Coincidentally, at 4.58am GMT on Thursday, Mars will disappear behind the full moon – an event known as an occultation – before reappearing at 5:59am GMT.

Mr Flanagan insists that anyone can take up astronomy, as many parts of space can be seen without a pricey kit.

He said: ‘Astronomy is a pastime that can be enjoyed even without a telescope.

‘If you’ve just got a pair of binoculars, you’ll be able to see the four main moons of Jupiter, and if you have a good pair you might even be able to make out the rings of Saturn.

‘And as you go through each month or season there’ll be something new to see in the sky.

‘For example, on the 8th of December there will be a period when Mars will appear to be very close to the Moon there are certain events that I’ll be looking out for.’

On Thursday morning, the Red Planet will be in opposition – meaning it’ll be located in the opposite direction to the sun, relative to Earth.

It will appear bigger and brighter in the sky because it’ll be at its closest point to Earth – around 50 million miles (81 million km) away.

This will give stargazers in the UK the best view of Mars on offer this decade, and they won’t even need a telescope.

Coincidentally, at 4.58am GMT on Thursday, Mars will disappear behind the full moon – an event known as an occultation – before reappearing at 5:59am GMT.

Because of the orbits of the Earth and Mars, opposition occurs about every 26 months, but occultation and opposition happening together is much rarer.

Mr Flanagan added: ‘Seeing things like that is so awe-inspiring, it always raises the question of what is our place in this universe?’

But Mr Flanagan isn’t the only one that has been taking pictures of outer space this month, as NASA has shared a new image of the Eagle Nebula, taken by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The $10 billion (£7.4 billion) super space telescope photographed a particular feature of the nebula called the Pillars of Creation – finger-like tendrils of gas and dust that are 6,500 light-years away from Earth.

They are known for being an important source of star formation, so the image also shows many stars that are very young at just a few 100,000 years old.

The Pillars were snapped in both near infrared light, which blocks out the brightness of nearby stars to showcase the swirling dust, and mid-infrared light, which displays the newly-formed stars in orange.

The two images were then overlaid to produce a haunting picture that features the best of both views, including the glowing edges of dust where young stars are beginning to form.

Construction begins on the world’s biggest telescope costing £1.7 billion

Construction has officially begun on the world’s largest telescope – the £1.7 billion Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

This telescope will initially comprise 197 dishes and 131,072 antennas spread across South Africa and Australia respectively, but will be headquartered in the UK.

It will have many scientific goals, including searching for extra-terrestrial life, testing Einstein’s theory of general relativity and exploring the evolution of the early universe.

Construction Commencement Ceremonies have now taken place in both Murchison shire in Western Australia and in the Karoo of South Africa’s Northern Cape, marking the start of the building phase

Dr Sarah Pearce, the head of telescope operations in Australia, said: ‘The SKA telescopes will be sensitive enough to detect an airport radar on a planet circling a star tens of light years away, so may even answer the biggest question of all: are we alone in the Universe?’

Queen’s granddaughter Lady Louise Windsor, 18, earns £6.83 working summer job at a garden centre

The Queen’s granddaughter Lady Louise Windsor has been working several days a week at a garden centre over the summer for around the minimum wage, it has been revealed.

The 18-year-old daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex has been earning £6.63 per hour since finishing her A-levels in June – despite living in a £30million mansion in Bagshot Park, Surrey.

She confirmed her place at the University of St Andrews after receiving her A-level results, Buckingham Palace said yesterday. She will read English at the Scottish institution, where Prince William and Kate Middleton met.

At the garden centre – the location for which has not been disclosed – Lady Louise is said to have been helping out on the tills, greeting customers, pruning and potting plants.

While the security arrangements for her job have also not been made public, her parents Edward and Sophie are thought to only receive police protection when on official duties and engagements.

One shopper told The Sun: ‘I knew the cost-of-living crisis was bad, but I didn’t think I’d ever see a grandchild of the Queen working in a garden centre.’

Another customer added: ‘The staff seemed to adore her. It’s not every day you buy your begonias off a royal.’ And a third, who was served by the royal, said: ‘I couldn’t believe it was Lady Louise, I had to look twice.

‘She is a really modest and sweet young woman who is polite and attentive to customers. She seemed to be loving the job. You’d never imagine the Queen’s granddaughter would take on a role working behind a till.’

Ingrid Seward, editor of Majesty magazine, said: ‘Isn’t it wonderful the Queen’s granddaughter rolled her sleeves up and got her hands dirty with a summer job before going to university — just like any other normal teenager.’

Lady Louise studied AS-level English, history, politics and drama at her school in Ascot, near the family’s home of Bagshot Park. It is not known which subjects she took at A-level or what grades she achieved.

The schoolgirl was among the thousands of students who were affected when the AS-level exams were cancelled last year.

Tens of thousands of Britain’s students have been battling for a university place through Clearing – after the A-level grades they received were down on the past two years, but remained higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Some 20,360 pupils across England, Wales and Northern Ireland found out yesterday that they were unplaced and therefore eligible for Clearing, based on exam results.

This total was up by 46 per cent on the 2021 figure of 13,930 – when students were assessed by teachers – but down on the last pre-pandemic figure of 24,260 in 2019.

Lady Louise was among those fortunate enough to secure a place and will join freshers at St Andrews this autumn.

The teenager enjoys a close relationship with her grandmother the Queen and is taking on an increasingly public role within the Royal Family.

She played a starring role in Trooping the Colour during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebration before making her appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside the Queen.

The 18-year-old recently joined her parents and brother James, Viscount Severn, 14, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

A keen equestrian, Lady Louise has inherited her love of carriage driving from her late grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh, who personally taught her the sport.

She rides on a competitive basis and will no doubt want to continue with her hobby through university.

Many students at St Andrews live in halls of residence. William and Kate both lived in St Salvator’s, known as Sallies, where they came to know each other as friends before romance bloomed.

They both initially enrolled to study History of Art but William later switched to geography.

The couple went public with their relationship shortly before they graduated.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge returned to the campus last year to mark their tenth wedding anniversary.

Earlier this month, Lady Louise Windsor greeted her cousin-by-marriage Kate Middleton with a double kiss on the cheek at the Commonwealth Games.

Lady Louise wore a white shirt, floral skirt and tan leather handbag as she greeted the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William at the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Birmingham, where the games are being held.

Kate, 40, who wore her brunette tresses down and in curls, greeted James, Viscount Severn, 14, Sophie Wessex, 57, Lady Louise Windsor and Prince Edward, 58, as she shuffled into the stands.

James and Lady Louise joined the rest of the family for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations earlier this year, but have largely grown up away from the limelight.

When attending the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on 1 August, Lady Louise was the picture of elegance in a £985 dress she borrowed from her mother.

The royal looked pretty in a pink and blue dress at the event, rewearing a Peter Pilotto gown from her mother’s wardrobe, while James and Sophie showed emotional reactions as they watched the action.
