Getting A PS5 Or Xbox Series S/X Is Sorta Easier 2 Years Later

After two years on the market, you’d probably think scooping up a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X would be simpler by now.

Sure, there’s the semiconductor shortage the world is still contending with and a supply-chain bottleneck that’s expected to last until 2023 (if not 2024 according to some estimates). But, as Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan said at the annual PlayStation Partner Awards ceremony in Japan on December 2, the company has apparently “resolved the long-term supply issue of the PlayStation 5” in Asian markets.

Oh yeah? Then why, when Kotaku called several brick-and-mortar stores just a few days before Christmas this year were we told inventory for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X consoles was either very limited or completely gone?

The truth of the matter is, while it has become somewhat easier to get your hands on new-gen consoles, doing so still requires diligence and patience—unless you want the smaller, cuter Series S, or can wait for shipping. Otherwise, much like last year, if you were hoping to walk in and out of a store with a brand-spanking-new console in hand, you’re likely out of luck.

Inventory In Brick-And-Mortar Stores Is Unreliable

You might be tempted to call up your local physical retailer like Best Buy or GameStop with the goal of buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X in the store. That’s certainly a possibility, though it depends on the console you’re going for.

A GameStop associate at a Manhattan, New York location told Kotaku over the phone that Sony’s system is “rarely” in stock and when it is on the store shelves, it’s gone within the week. The Xbox Series X is “a little more common,” the associate said, but the same inventory issue arises: When it is available, it’s sold out in just a few days’ time. This situation is repeated at other physical stores, including Best Buy and Walmart, with store associates at both retailers telling Kotaku in brief phone interviews that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are “occasionally” in stock but quickly sell out.

Surprisingly, things are a little different at Target. An employee at a Manhattan store said that the PlayStation 5 was actually sitting on the shelves “right now,” but folks looking to buy one couldn’t just walk in, take one to the counter, and check out. Instead, you have to do an in-store pick-up through the company’s website and, if inventory was available, then you could walk in with money and walk out with a PlayStation 5. In an eye-popping twist, the Xbox Series X was immediately available. The employee said, if I really wanted to, I could go buy Microsoft’s console this instant. They were quick to point out, though, that all system purchases—especially on the PlayStation 5—were limited to one per person due to “security concerns.” Yikes.

Online Retailers Are A Bit Better, But Not By Much

If brick-and-mortar stores are unreliable in terms of physical inventory, you may have a better chance at buying a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X online and shipping it to your home. All the major retailers typically have both consoles in stock and if they aren’t available by themselves, you can usually get it bundled with a game or subscription. There are some exceptions here, of course. GameStop, for example, is completely sold out of individual PlayStation 5s and Xbox Series Xs online right now. As is Best Buy on the PlayStation 5, though you can order the Xbox Series X if you have an account.

It’s always finicky ordering something from Walmart, as the company tends to partner with third-party sellers to complete transactions. But, as I’m checking the company’s website right now, PlayStation 5s and Xbox Series Xs are mostly available to purchase online—though the prices for these consoles seem to vary wildly. Target is similarly strange, with both systems either being “discontinued for shipping” or relegated to in-store pick-up only—if they are even available at all, of course. One quick note here, though: You could also order the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X directly from Sony and Microsoft’s official websites, and they appear to be in stock. Shipping here seems to be comparable to other major retailers as well, with orders placed now arriving just a few days after Christmas. Not bad.

Hey, You Could Always Just Get An Xbox Series S

It’s just so cute, even when zoomed in.
Image: Microsoft

You may have noticed I skipped one whole console: the Xbox Series S. That’s because, as I wrote earlier, Microsoft’s cheaper, smaller system is almost always available. Several associates across the brick-and-mortar stores told Kotaku over the phone that they had “plenty” of Xbox Series S’s sitting on their shelves at the moment. And while I was browsing around multiple online retailers, including Microsoft’s own website, the slimmer sister to the behemoth shoebox Xbox Series X was ready to be ordered.

Sure, it’s not the monster powerhouse that is the Xbox Series X. It can’t output native “true 4K” and only has four teraflops of processing power when compared to the bigger sister’s 12. And yeah, you do only get 512 GB of internal storage instead of 1 TB. But what the system lacks in power is made up by its impressive form factor and accessible price point. If you’re willing to make those minor trade-offs, then the Xbox Series S is an excellent way to get into this current generation of console gaming.

Another year is in the books, y’all. We made it through. The entertainment and technology industries are still getting battered by both the ongoing pandemic and semiconductor shortages, but it does appear that things are smoothing over a little. Maybe this time next year, the forecast of getting a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X will be significantly better. At the very least, we don’t have to worry much about bots anymore.

GameStop Pre-Orders Are A Major Mess Right Now, Staff Say

Photo: SOPA Images (Getty Images)

“Is there anything you want to pre-order?” Almost nobody walks in and out of a GameStop without hearing those words. Employees are measured against how many pre-orders they can rack up while GameStop rakes in the cash months ahead of a game’s actual release. But lately, the strategy has been sabotaged by a system overhaul, with copies arriving late or not at all, and some staff are worried they’ll be the ones paying the price.

Over the last few days, the GameStop subreddit has been flooded with current staff complaining about computer issues, ranging from borked inventory searches to pre-order histories that have been completely wiped out before stores received their shipments. “How do I push pre-orders when we can’t get crap in?” reads one post. “Customers are understandably upset and our regulars are even just ordering offline now because we can’t fulfill the niche stuff…”

Three GameStop employees Kotaku spoke with echoed similar issues. They trace the problem back to an SAP software conversion that began taking place over the summer. It was apparently supposed to merge multiple databases, including sales, customer service, logistics, and more. GameStop did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“The inventories in our systems are unreliable right now,” one employee wrote in an email. “We are receiving shipments from the warehouse that do not even appear on our receiving lists, so they’ve got us opening the boxes, recording the inventories, and emailing them back to inventory control. It took me the better part of my day today to process just four boxes this way.”

Which games are the casualties in this current pre-order crisis? NBA 2K23, one of the biggest sports games of the year, is one. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All-Star Battle R is another. But some of the hardest hit games are niche titles like Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. They have small but passionate fan-bases, and stores often only get a few copies specifically for the dedicated players who pre-order in advance.

“Pre-orders have been hell recently,” said another employee at a different store. “We were shorted on multiple copies of NBA 2K and collectible pre-orders never arrive on time. We can only refund pre-order cancels as store credit if it’s been longer than a month too, it doesn’t matter if you paid cash or not.”

While staff have to try to explain to frustrated customers why the copy of a game they already spent money on never showed up, the back-end issues are also seemingly messing up how stores record the very sales goals employees are measured against. “Unfortunately, pre-orders also became [a] key metric stores are being graded on and when you cancel a pre-order it actually puts stores in a negative [count],” one employee said. Theirs was negative 22. “People are actually getting in trouble over this.”

“I’ve had 6 customers cancel their preorders because they didn’t get theirs,” one person posted on the subreddit yesterday. “Boss [is] getting on me about getting preorders but I can’t help it [if] people are beginning to lose trust in us. What’s the point in pre-ordering a game if you can’t get it anyway.” Some stores have been instructed to deal with the cancellations by offering to re-order the game and having it sent directly to the customer’s house, one employee said. But they hadn’t heard of any long-term fix beyond that.

The pre-order fiasco couldn’t be coming at a worse time, either. September is the start of the busy holiday game release calendar, and while 2022 is sparser than past years, GameStop needs all the help it can get. The meme stock has been on a brutal rollercoaster ride since its split in July, and it’s not clear how much a heavily publicized pivot to NFTs and crypto will actually benefit the company.

More importantly, it’s another burden borne by burnt out staff who are working more for less. GameStop recently announced fraught stock bonuses for store managers that don’t begin to vest until next year, and measly $0.50 raises for everyone else. At the same time, however, the company’s been tightening the screws, forcing managers to cover multiple stores, while others effectively do the job of an assistant store manager for no extra pay.

“I actually told my manager the other day that I’m going to be quitting right before he takes his second store, because without our assistant manager I’m pretty much gonna have to work as the assistant manager without the pay and with the stress,” said one current employee. “I don’t even have a new job lined up yet, I just don’t want to deal with it.”

GameStop (GME) Q2 2022 earnings

SAN RAFAEL, CALIFORNIA – DECEMBER 08: Customers enter a GameStop store on December 08, 2021 in San Rafael, California. Video game retailer GameStop will report third quarter earnings today after the closing bell. (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

GameStop said Wednesday that quarterly sales declined and losses widened, as it burned through cash and inventory swelled.

The video game retailer also disclosed a new partnership with crypto exchange FTX.

Shares of the company rose about 10% in after hours trading.

In the second fiscal quarter ended July 30, the company’s total sales dropped to $1.14 billion from $1.18 billion in the year-ago period. Its losses widened to $108.7 million, or 36 cents per share, compared with a loss of $61.6 million, or 21 cents, a year prior.

GameStop’s results cannot be compared with estimates because too few analysts cover the company. It did not provide a financial outlook and hasn’t provided one since the start of the pandemic.

The brick-and-mortar retailer is trying to adapt its business to a digital world. It’s gotten new leadership, including board chair Ryan Cohen, the founder of Chewy and former activist investor for Bed Bath & Beyond, and CEO Matt Furlong, an Amazon veteran. It’s also looked to new ways to make money, including nonfungible tokens.

But the company has struggled to drive profits, leading it to trim costs and shake up leadership. Last month, it fired chief financial officer Mike Recupero and laid off employees across departments. Accounting chief Diana Jajeh stepped in as the company’s new CFO.

Furlong urged patience on an investor call on Wednesday, saying GameStop must go through a significant transformation to keep up with customers.

“Our path to becoming a more diversified and tech-centric business is one that obviously carries risk and will take time,” he said. “This said, we believe GameStop is a much stronger business than it was 18 months ago.”

GameStop’s new initiatives have come at a high cost. It had $908.9 million in cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter — a little more than half of what it had at the end of the year-ago period.

Inventory ballooned to $734.8 million at the close of the quarter. That’s up from $596.4 million at the close of the prior year’s second quarter. The company said in a release that it intentionally bulked up on merchandise to keep up with customer demand and cope with supply chain challenges.

Furlong said on the call that the company had to spend money to modernize its business after years of underinvestment. Among its moves, it hired more than 600 people with talent in areas such as blockchain while it reduced shipping times, so customers get purchases in one to three days.

Changing it up

Now, he said, the company is focused on new priorities: becoming profitable, launching proprietary products and investing in its stores. He said it is lowering costs, too. Expenses decreased by 14% from the first quarter of the year, including some reductions that came from the layoffs.

“We’re going to retain a strong focus on cost containment and continue promoting an ownership mentality across the organization,” he said.

As overall sales fell, he pointed to growth of newer businesses. GameStop launched an NFT marketplace in July, which is open to the public for beta testing. It allows users to connect their own digital asset wallets, including the recently launched GameStop Wallet, so they can buy, sell and trade NFTs for virtual goods.

Sales attributable to collectibles rose from $177.2 million in the prior year’s second quarter to $223.2 million in the most recent one.

NFTs trade on FTX, the retailer’s new partner. “In addition to collaborating with FTX on new ecommerce and online marketing initiatives, GameStop will begin carrying FTX gift cards in select stores,” GameStop said in a release.

FTX was founded by billionaire former Wall Street trader Sam Bankman-Fried, 30. He has become a lender of last resort for crypto firms that have struggled as the assets have declined sharply since late last year.

The agreement with FTX appears to play into GameStop’s status as a meme stock.

The company’s shares have seen sharp fluctuations in value. Over the past year, shares have swung from $19.39 to $63.92. The company’s stock is down about 36% so far this year, bringing the company’s value to $7.31 billion.

Even as the company pivots more to e-commerce, Furlong said that stores remain an important way to connect with customers and to fulfill online orders.

GameStop rolled out a new compensation model for U.S. store leaders, he said. Each store leader can get $21,000 in stock, which vests over three years. They can also get additional pay through company stock on a quarterly basis, depending on their performance.

It is also raising hourly pay for some store employees, but he did not share the specific wage.

In-store GameStop PS5 restock sold out — where to find inventory next

Update: GameStop is now sold out of consoles. Make sure to follow our PS5 restock guide for news on the next drop.

An in-store GameStop PS5 restock is happening today. The retailer announced (opens in new tab) it will have PS5 restock in select stores on Saturday (July 23).

As we’ve seen with previous GameStop restocks, you’ll need to be a PowerUp Rewards Pro member to purchase a console. (Alternatively, Amazon is accepting registrations for its PS5 bundles). Details of this GameStop PS5 stock drop come via Matt Swider (opens in new tab) of The Shortcut (opens in new tab). Matt is one of the most well-respected stock trackers around with highly dependable sources at practically every major retailer.

This in-store restock event will begin from the opening time of each individual store (which could be as early as 8 a.m. local time). As a reminder, this PS5 restock will require you to be a PowerUp Reward Pro member. GameStop has gated all of its next-gen console restocks behind its premium membership program since early 2021, and we expect the retailer to continue this practice for the foreseeable future.

GameStop is also notorious for selling its allocation of PS5 consoles in pre-built bundles and this restock will likely continue that trend. While bundles aren’t the cheapest way to score a PS5, at least GameStop always charges the combined retail price of the items, so you’re not getting price gouged. Make sure you check our GameStop promo codes page for coupons and discounts.

If you’d rather purchase your console online or don’t want to stretch your budget to cover a pricey GameStop bundle, be sure to check our PS5 restock hub. This comprehensive guide is updated daily with the latest updates across all major retailers.
