Homeworld 3 Gameplay Footage From GamesCom Looks Fantastic

Screenshot: YouTube

Homeworld 3 was first announced back in 2019. A lot has happened since then, least of all to this game’s development—like its weird fan investor scheme being lauded then cancelled—but now, in August 2023, we have got our first real look at the game in action.

Almost a year to the date from our first brief look, developers Blackbird Interactive have put together a lengthy gameplay demonstration for GamesCom, and it is exactly the kind of thing I want to be seeing from games that are still in development.

This is actual gameplay! There’s a cursor and a user interface on the screen. It lets us see how the game actually plays. Sure, it may not be final, hands-on gameplay footage that we’re seeing broadcast in real-time from someone playing the game, but for a major show presentation, it’s pretty neat.

It’s the kind of thing Homeworld fans are most interested in, too. We knew the ships looked cool, but how the game played—and how we’d be able to make use of tactics in deep space—is what I want to be seeing, and this video delivers, highlighting stuff like unit formations, the use of cover and even little callbacks to the original games like the ability to steal enemy units and the fuzzy little blue lights of the Resource Collectors.

Plus, you know, the whole just looks really nice. Exactly what you’d want a Homeworld game to look like in modern times. Everything that made the originals such a slick visual experience is there, its now just at higher resolutions and with fancier effects.

Homeworld 3 will be out on PC sometime next year, with publishers Gearbox giving a timeframe of “first half 2023″.

Random: BMW Reveals Pokémon-Themed Mini Aceman Concept At Gamescom

Image: Gamescom / BMW / The Pokémon Company

BMW has revealed a Pokémon-themed version of its all-electric Mini Aceman concept car as part of a MINI x Pokémon collaboration.

Shown during a slightly bizarre segment of Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, as hosted by Geoff Keighley, there was lots of flowery brand-focused language but not much in the way of specifics. It’s a concept car with “gaming features”, although exactly what that means was never really explained.

The car appears to display lots of neat Pokémon graphics across the dash, but Oliver Heilmer, head of Mini design and the chap Keighley was questioning about the vehicle, showed his very best media-training moves by deflecting the first question to talk some fluff about Gamescom, and then leading the conversation into very specific… nothingness. Mini is more than a car, you see; it’s a character you partner with to explore the road.

Image: Gamescom

Apparently, this collab is a match made in heaven because Pikachu is an electric type and the car also runs on electricity — must have taken the marketing team two, maybe three whole seconds to come up with that one. Good news for Ash and his favourite Pocket Monster, though, as they will presumably be able to stay on the road in their natty set of wheels while avoiding crippling energy price increases as the cost of living crisis grips nations across the globe.

Apparently, you can connect your gaming console to this Mini, but again, no specifics were given. ‘Play on’ is the motto behind this collab. Thank goodness they managed to squeeze that essential bit of info in, otherwise we’d be left with questions.

So yes. A weird segment, to be sure. But hey, at least this bit wasn’t space-based. We were disappointed that Geoff didn’t ask Oliver his favourite Pokémon as he said he would, though.

BMW Blog has more info about the car. Check out the video below (skip to the end for the Pokémon bit):

Perplexed? Confused? Tired? Time for bed. Let us know your thoughts on the Mini Aceman Concept and how it appeals to gamers below. And let us know your guesses for the designer’s favourite Pokémon, too. Let’s get some puns out of this at the very least.

All the announcements from Gamescom 2022’s Opening Night Live

Gamescom kicked off Tuesday with the two-hour Opening Night Live presentation, hosted by The Game Awards’ Geoff Keighley. Streamed live on both YouTube and Twitch — as well as hosted in-person in Cologne, Germany — Keighley and Opening Night Live broadcast updates and announcements for more than 30 games, including Dead Island 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Gotham Knights, and Sonic Frontiers.

Here are all the announcements from Opening Night Live, including some that aren’t exactly games, like Hideo Kojima’s podcast and a Pokémon car.

It’s hard to say exactly what Everywhere is based off the teaser trailer, but there’s shooting, driving, explosions, space, and apparently an open world from developer Build A Rocket Boy. Everywhere is slated for 2023.

Funcom’s making a Dune game called Dune Awakening, a survival, open-world MMO.

Hogwarts Legacy got a new trailer during Gamescom 2022’s Opening Night Live, focused all on the dark arts. It’s expected out Feb. 10, 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

Gearbox announced New Tales from the Borderlands, an episodic narrative game picking up after 2015’s Tales from the Borderlands. It follows three new “lovable losers” out to save to the world. Coming in October.

Former Bethesda Game Studios designer Jeff Gardiner and Obsidian Entertainment alumnus Charlie Staples formed Something Wicked Games, and announced Wyrdsong on Tuesday.

Zombie role-playing game Dead Island 2 was originally announced in 2014, but it’s been re-revealed at Gamescom 2022. There are six playable characters, with a “pulpy and irreverant tone.” It’s expected out on Feb. 3, 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol is coming on Dec. 2, and new live gameplay was shown off during Tuesday’s event. There are tentacles! Tentacles that mutate.

Goat Simulator 3

After being announced earlier this year, Goat Simulator 3’s got a gameplay trailer showing exactly how all that chaos will go down.

Return to Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island will be released Sept. 19.

Moving Out 2

Following up on the first game, Moving Out 2 is coming in 2023.

The Lords of the Fallen was announced from Hexworks. It’s a follow-up to 2014’s Lords of the Fallen, and coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. In the three-minute trailer, Hexworks showed off the dark fantasy world.

Stranded: Alien Dawn

Surviving Mars developer Haemimont Games showed off Stranded: Alien Down, the planet survival simulator, coming to early access on PC in October. Players help a group of colonists survive on a “deadly alien world,” according to a news release.

Under the Waves

Parallel Studios and Quantic Dream’s next game is Under the Waves, coming in 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Sonic Frontiers will be released Nov. 8 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Focus Entertainment and Deck13 Interactive announced its new action, fantasy role-playing game: Atlas Fallen. It’s described as having a “semi-open world full of ancient mysteries and threats,” and it’s coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2023. It looks like there will be a lot of sand gliding.

The Outlast Trials

On Tuesday, developer Red Barrels showed a new look at The Outlast Trials. It’s the next game in the Outlast franchise, and for the first time, it’s multiplayer. A closed beta period is scheduled for this year.

AMD Sets Eyes on Gamescom 2022 For Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” & AM5 Platform Announcement

AMD has confirmed that they will be attending Gamescom this year and it looks like we will finally have the official Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” & AM5 announcement taking place during the event.

AMD Hints at Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” CPU & AM5 Platform Announcement at Gamescom 2022

Based on the information we have, it looks like AMD will be hosting a product announcement event later this month which will focus on the specifications and prices of its Ryzen 7000 “Raphael” lineup and will also allow motherboard manufacturers to reveal the preliminary prices of their boards. As far as this event is concerned, it will take place on 29th August but you won’t get to purchase Ryzen 7000 CPUs until two weeks later.
