After Years Of Trying, WB Games Has Successfully Patented Shadow of Mordor’s Nemesis System

Screenshot: WB Games

After trying multiple times since 2015, WB Games has successfully secured a patent on the nemesis system featured in Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, Shadow of War. The patent goes into effect later this month.

As reported by IGN, on February 3 the US Patent and Trademark Office released an issue notice confirming that WB Games’ patent on the system was approved and would become effective officially on February 23, 2021.

(That issue notice link wasn’t working at the time of publication.)

The nemesis system first appeared in 2014’s open-world-stab-athon Shadow of Mordor, and would be expanded on greatly in the 2017 sequel Shadow of War. The Nemesis System uses randomly generated orcs to populate the world. Players then attack these orcs, sometimes killing them, taking control of them, or even losing to them. As these events happen the orcs will react, becoming more powerful, gaining new abilities, and directly referencing past experiences with the player. It’s a cool system. And soon, only one publisher, WB Games, will have the ability to use it.

Once the patent becomes active, other developers or publishers wanting to use a Nemesis System will have to cut a deal with WB Games or face legal action.

Since 2015, shortly after the release of Shadow of Mordor, WB Games has been trying and failing to secure this patent. Previous issues included a lack of specificity, which is very important in a patent, and conflicts with other existing patents.

WB Games will have the ability to maintain this patent until 2035, assuming they keep all their orcs in order legally and financially.

Brooklyn Nets’ Kevin Durant won’t travel, may sit multiple games due to contact-tracing protocols

After a confounding night surrounding the status of Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant at the Barclays Center — which included him getting pulled out of the lineup in the pregame and third quarter for contact-tracing protocols — Durant won’t travel to Philadelphia for Saturday’s game and could be lost for multiple games for the second time in a month, sources tell ESPN.

Durant had come into contact with an associate on Friday who tested positive for the coronavirus Friday night, just hours after returning an inconclusive test shortly before the Nets’ 123-117 loss to the Toronto Raptors.

That inspired a most dramatic third-quarter scene: a Nets official informing Durant that he had to leave the bench for isolation, causing a flustered franchise star to trudge into the bowels of Barclays, where, presumably, he tweeted, “Free Me,” in the final minutes of the game.

The Nets informed the league office of the individual’s inconclusive test on Friday afternoon, and eventually were instructed to pull Durant out of pregame warmups. Nets general manager Sean Marks had been on the phone with the league office and delivered word down to the court.

Moments later, Steve Nash and his coaching staff found out that Durant would not be available to start the game.

Durant left the floor before the game, only to have the NBA clear him to return to the bench shortly after the start of the first quarter.

“Durant was initially held out of the game while that result was being reviewed,” the league statement said. “Under the league’s health and safety protocols, we do not require a player to be quarantined until a close contact has a confirmed positive test.”

Before Durant left the court for the final time during the third quarter, he was sitting on the bench while officials reviewed a play in which he had picked up his fifth foul of the evening. The foul was overturned, but Durant never checked back in.

As the timeout came to an end, a team official told Durant he wouldn’t be able to continue in the game. Durant shook his head in apparent frustration. As he walked back through the tunnel, Durant threw his water bottle.

Durant, who played 19 minutes in the game, kept tweeting on Friday night after the game, questioning the league’s timeline and details.

On the heels of NBA stars LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo ridiculing the NBA and the NBPA’s plans for an Atlanta All-Star game on March 7, there emerged a late-week feeling of superstar revolt.

“I don’t understand the whole thing where he couldn’t play, then he came on the court, then they took him back,” Nets guard James Harden said. “There’s just a lot going on. There’s too much going on. It’s kind of overwhelming. We’re in the midst of a tough game, and these games are going to add up, especially if we’re talking about playoff seeding … to catch a rhythm. It’s overwhelming. It’s frustrating.”

“[Durant] feels the same way. Especially with him already having it and we get tested every single day. He’s been negative. So, I don’t understand what the problem is. The game should’ve been postponed, I feel like. If we’re talking about contact tracing. He was around all of us. So I don’t understand why he wasn’t allowed to play, then allowed to play, then taken back off the court. If that was the case, we should’ve postponed the game.”

Durant contracted the coronavirus in March and still had those antibodies in early January when he was lost for four games because of contact tracing. Four weeks later, Durant could be lost for a similar six-day stretch, sources said.

After Friday’s game, Nash said that he struggled, at times, to compartmentalize Durant’s absence during the game.

“I probably got a little distracted thinking about what it means long-term for our team,” Nash said. “We’ve already been playing guys a lot of minutes and if Kevin is not playing, are we gonna run the remaining guys too many minutes? So maybe I got a little distracted by the big picture.”

The Nets have road games on Saturday (Philadelphia) and Tuesday (Detroit) and return home on Wednesday (Indiana). The Nets start a West Coast trip next Saturday against Golden State.

Free PC Games: Here’s What’s Available to Download Right Now

Everyone loves free stuff. And if you have a gaming PC, you can pretty much always find a game or two you can download from a digital storefront for free. Honestly, it’s one of the best perks of playing games on PC. The only problem is it can be tough to keep track of what free games are available at any given time.We thought we’d make it easy on you. Whenever there’s a free PC game to download at one of the major online stores, we’ll highlight it below. All you have to do is check back often to make sure you get the free PC games you so richly deserve.

Free Games from Epic Game Store

For years and years, Steam seemed unstoppable. It was the storefront for PC games. How could any company possibly compete with such an entrenched powerhouse? Turns out the answer is: by offering tons of high-quality games for free.

Anyone with an Epic Games Store account can download at least one free game each week from the online retailer. It’s a heck of a perk, and one you should take advantage of on a weekly basis if you like free games. And who doesn’t?

Free Games from Amazon Prime Gaming

Free Games and DLC with Prime

Get a new batch of free PC games each month, plus DLC for popular titles.

Amazon Prime members get a batch of free PC games each month. Granted, you need to sign up for Prime, which costs money, but if you’re already a member for the free shipping or Prime Video, you might as well take advantage of the free games each month. In addition to free PC games each month, Prime members also get in-game items in all kinds of titles, ranging from Destiny 2 and League of Legends to Red Dead Online and Star Wars Squadrons.

Unless you’re really into indie titles, t’s probably not worth signing up for Prime just to get the free games. Prime’s free PC games don’t tend to be as big or well-known as the ones Epic Games Store doles out for free. But if you’re already a Prime member for the many other benefits, there’s no reason not to take a look at what’s on offer each month.

If you don’t have a gaming PC, or you also have a console, you can check out our best PlayStation deals, best Xbox deals, and best Nintendo Switch deals as well. We keep those articles updated with all the best deals on games, consoles, accessories, and more.

Elon Musk: Neuralink enabled monkey to ‘play video games using his mind’

  • Elon Musk’s Neuralink implanted a chip that enabled a monkey to “play video games using his mind.”
  • Musk claimed as much in a wide-ranging interview on Clubhouse on Sunday night.
  • Neuralink is focused on human-computer interfaces for artificial intelligence in people.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Elon Musk’s human-computer-interface company, Neuralink, seems to be off to a strong start.

“We’ve already got a monkey with a wireless implant in their skull, and the tiny wires, who can play video games using his mind,” Musk said in an interview on the “Good Time Show” on the app Clubhouse on Sunday night.

“One of the things we’re trying to figure out is can we have the monkeys play mind ‘Pong’ with each other,” he said. “That would be pretty cool.”

Neuralink has been testing neural interfaces on animals for years. In a video released last year, Neuralink demonstrated its work on a pig named Gertrude.

The Neuralink device in a pig’s brain transmitted data during a demo last year as the pig snuffled around.

Neuralink/YouTube

In that video, Neuralink demonstrated its ability to record and try to predict actions based on a wired chip implanted in Gertrude’s brain.

But Musk said the video-game-playing monkey got a wireless chip that enabled it to control an electronic interface with its mind only.

“He’s not uncomfortable, and he doesn’t look weird,” Musk said. “And you can’t even see where the neural implant went in.”

The wireless bit is particularly important, as it could eliminate the potential for infection that comes with wires protruding from organic material.

“If you can do experiments with something that doesn’t involve wires coming through the skin, that’s going to improve the welfare of animals,” Andrew Jackson, a neuroscience professor at the University of Newcastle, told Insider last year.

Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For February And March 2021 – Guide

We’re now one entire month into 2021 and it’s becoming clearer with each passing day that this year may turn out to be ‘2020: Part Deux’. The good gamers of the world are in need of diversion more than ever, and fortunately there are some rather fabulous-looking Switch games coming over the next month or two to lift your spirits (and lighten your wallets).

Below we’ve rounded up the biggest games and accessories making their way to retail in February and March 2021. Super Mario 3D World is Nintendo’s first big release of the year and we cannot wait to dive furry head-first into the new Bowser’s Fury content. At the tail end of the two-month period we’ve got Monster Hunter Rise bringing up the rear. Plenty of quality hours to be had from just those two, then, but there are more sizeable releases to choose from if cats and monsters aren’t your bag.

So, grab yourself a warm cup of something and settle down with a comfy blanket. Let’s take a look at the big retail releases coming to Switch over the next couple of months and beyond…

Remember: if you’re ordering from Play-Asia, use the discount code NLIFE at checkout to get 5% off your order.

Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.

One of the Wii U ports we’ve all been waiting for, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will offer a tweaked experience that expands on the original 2013 platformer with new content. There’s a dual pack of Cat Mario and Cat Peach amiibo incoming on the same day, so expect an overflow of cuteness and a chance to appreciate this excellent title all over again when it finally arrives on Switch.

Japanese Switch owners got their hands on this hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors crossover in the form of Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers back in February 2020, and it’s now finally scheduled for a western release with a minor name change.

While it might not be the Persona 5 game fans are waiting for, we’ve seen some excellent Warriors crossovers in the form of Fire Emblem Warriors and most recently Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. This has the potential to be an equally tasty mash up, so while we’ll keep hoping for Atlus to bring P5 proper to Nintendo’s console, we’re intrigued to see what Omega Force has in store.

Bravely Default II slipped from its original release date into the beginning of 2021, but Square Enix’s sequel is one to watch for fans of the 3DS originals, or anyone with a taste for traditional-style JRPG gameplay and turn-based combat.

If you’re intrigued by what you see, there’s a demo available on the Switch eShop that should give you an idea if Bravely Default is your cup of tea or not. Check it out.

Marvelous’ next instalment in the Story of Seasons life/farm sim series will put you to work cultivating a farm just next to the titular port of Olive Town. The game promises more customisation options and more freedom than ever before to aid you in living your best life, plus plenty more marriage candidates of course, and you’ll have your work cut out for you clearing space in the forest for your new abode and cultivating all the bountiful natural wonders nearby.

A 3D action platforming game from Yuji Naka and Naoto Ohshima, perhaps best known as the creators of one Sonic the Hedgehog, Balan Wonderworld brings back warm memories of 3D SEGA games like Nights Into Dreams on the Saturn and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg on GameCube. It’s a multiplatform release and we’re looking forward to exploring its colourful environments on Switch.

Described as “a brand new take on the Monster Hunter experience”, up to four players can team up and save Kamura village from the impending ‘Rampage’, harnessing the new Wirebug hunting tool and enlisting the help of Palicoes, and Palamutes, along the way. The ‘Rise’ in the title is apparently a reference to this entry’s verticality, with the ability to traverse and climb rock faces and other terrain which will make the hunt all the more interesting.

A free limited-time demo was available throughout January — check out our impressions in this Monster Hunter Rise demo video from the lovely Alex.

More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games

Aside from the highlighted games above, there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in February and beyond.

Awesome Accessories For Your Switch

And finally here are a selection of the finest Switch accessories coming up in February and beyond, for your consideration.

Shaun White withdraws from Winter X Games

Shaun White‘s return to the Winter X Games ended before he could take his first competition run in nearly three years.

White tweaked one of his knees in practice in the week leading up to Sunday night’s snowboard halfpipe event in Aspen, Colo., according to his social media.

“After talking with the medical staff, decided that pushing through would only make things worse,” was posted on White’s Instagram about four hours before the contest. “It’s a difficult decision to make, but just need to give my knee some time to recover and I’ll be back soon.”

White, 34, last competed in snowboarding at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, taking his third gold medal. He returned to riding after an aborted attempt to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in skateboarding.

Every time it just feels like a new go at it,” White, who next year will be older than any man to compete in an Olympic snowboard halfpipe, said in an X Games video interview last week. “I don’t really, like, let off the gas. You may not see me, but I’m still doing all the things that I need to.”

White’s anticipated return to X Games, his first time at the biggest annual snowboard competition since 2017, was billed as a showdown with Australian Scotty James. James took bronze in PyeongChang and won three of the last four X Games titles.

But Japanese 19-year-old Yuto Totsuka prevailed in Aspen, beating James for a third consecutive head-to-head and stamping himself as the early 2022 Olympic favorite. Totsuka, 11th in PyeongChang as the youngest entrant, ranked first on Sunday based on overall impression instead of any of his four runs being scored.

He had a pair of 1440s in one of his runs, according to commentators.

James took second, followed by another Japanese, Ruka HiranoTaylor Gold was the top American in fourth. At least one American man made the halfpipe podium at the first 23 editions of the X Games in the U.S., but none have done so the last two years.

Earlier on the last day of competition Sunday, snowboarder Jamie Anderson earned her eighth X Games title, but her first in big air.

Anderson, the two-time Olympic champion and seven-time X Games champion in slopestyle, beat a big air field that included every medalist from the last three X Games, plus every 2018 Olympic medalist, led by Austrian Anna Gasser (who was seventh on Sunday).

Anderson, 30, is already the only female snowboarder with multiple Olympic titles. She said after winning Friday’s slopestyle crown that she thought this might be her last competitive season, but now doesn’t know when she will retire.

Anderson is one Winter X Games medal shy of the record 20 held by Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris and two golds shy of the female record held by American snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis.

American men won snowboard slopestyle (Dusty Henricksen) and ski slopestyle (Nick Goepper).

Henricksen, a 17-year-old X Games rookie, became the first U.S. male snowboarder to win an X Games Aspen slopestyle since White in 2009. Previously, his biggest title was the 2020 Youth Winter Olympics.

He beat a field that included Olympic champion Red Gerard (seventh on Sunday). It lacked five-time X Games champ McMorris, who missed X Games for the first time since his 2011 debut due to a positive coronavirus test.

Goepper, an Olympic silver and bronze medalist, earned his fourth X Games ski slopestyle title and first since a three-peat from 2013-15.

What’s next for snowboarders and freeskiers is unclear. The biennial world championships set for China in February were canceled, but could be rescheduled.

The Burton U.S. Open, usually a season-ender in late February or early March for snowboarders, was also canceled due to the pandemic.

Rockstar Games’ Unannounced Game Reportedly Leaked By Employee

A longtime Rockstar Games employee has accidentally hinted at the studio’s next project, and it might not be Grand Theft Auto 6.+

An employee at Rockstar Games might have just leaked information about an unannounced game, prompting a firestorm of speculation over the weekend. It has been known for some time that the beloved developer of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 has a new project in the works, but Rockstar has remained silent about what it could be.

The most requested title from fans has been Grand Theft Auto VI, as the internet has been rife with rumors and speculation regarding the next installment of the studio’s famous open-world crime franchise. From data mining games like Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 for hidden GTA VI easter eggs to map rumors speculating on the game’s setting, players waiting for the next GTA experience have been hanging onto every scrap of information possibly signaling that the sequel is on the way. However, Rockstar has tried to assure fans that it’s going to be some time before GTA VI arrives, and a recent leak from inside the company suggests that its next game might be something else altogether.

Rockstar has indeed been preparing itself for new projects over the past few months, as it recently acquired Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian games back in October. In the meantime, Rockstar has enjoyed a successful year in 2020 thanks to Grand Theft Auto Online, which saw a record-breaking uptick in players due to such events as a spontaneous in-game alien gang war and the Epic Games Store offering up Grand Theft Auto V for free back in May.

Still, Rockstar Games is looking to the future as it continues this wave of success well into 2021, but it seems to remain keen on keeping its upcoming plans under wraps for the time being. Although Gander’s short-lived leak revealed virtually nothing about what the company has in store for fans, the idea of the titan of the gaming industry having new experiences in the works aside from the expected Grand Theft Auto VI is an exciting prospect, especially if the game in question turns out to be a return to one of the studio’s more neglected franchises.

NFL Championship games: What you need to know

Whether one of your teams is playing on Sunday, both games have historic value, and will be exciting match-ups to watch.

NFC Championship: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Green Bay Packers

When: 3:05 p.m. ET on FOX

Who to watch:

The obvious players to watch in this game will be the veteran quarterbacks, and for good reason.

Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has a 2020 regular season completion rate over 70% and is first in the league in touchdowns with 48 this season. Rodgers has reached the playoffs 10 seasons and has appeared in 19 playoff games, including winning one Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady is considered by many as the G.O.A.T of NFL quarterbacks with 43 playoff appearances in 18 years of postseason play, including nine Super Bowls, winning six times. This is his first season with the Bucs, so his leadership is definitely in the spotlight.

Who has the most to prove:

Both teams have a little something that will light the fire underneath them.

For the Bucs, if they win, this will only be the second time ever the team has reached the Super Bowl. With Brady at the helm for the first time, there is a lot riding on their success.

As far as Green Bay is concerned, it’s the quarterback face-off that really stands to bring some heat. Can Rodgers outplay Brady?

AFC Championship: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills

When: 6:40 p.m. ET on CBS

Where: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

Who to watch:

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has cleared concussion protocol after suffering a hit last week against the Browns, and will be ready to go for the game.
Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ heavily used tight end, is always a go-to for Mahomes. With 11 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards on the season, Kelce is the 6-foot-5 260 pound offensive weapon for Kansas City, and they should look to him in this match-up.
Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill, who has been an asset for the Chiefs all season, will also be a key player to watch. Hill is currently second in the league for touchdowns with 15 overall, and his season total of 1,276 yards is in the top 10. However, Hill has not scored a touchdown in the postseason, so he will be looking to get his first 6.
Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen has had an uphill battle as an underdog all season, but he is looking to surpass 350 passing yards in this game. Allen has a 69.2% completion rate and already has three post season touchdowns.
Allen will be looking for wide receiver Stefon Diggs to have his third straight game at over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. He is first in the league for both total yards and total receptions.

Who has the most to prove:

The Bills are definitely the underdogs heading into the game against the current Super Bowl champions. The Chiefs have been dominating all season, but the Bills are looking to punch their ticket to big game for the first time since 1994. The Bills Mafia, as their fans are called, are ready for a renewed reason to cheer.

Free PS4 and PS5 Games We May Get for February 2021

Next month is right around the corner, and next week Sony will announce February’s free PlayStation Plus games subscribers will be able to download and enjoy on PS4 and PS5. To kick off the new year, Sony put up a killer lineup that included two PS4 games and one PS5 game, and many PlayStation Plus subscribers are hoping momentum will be sustained with an equally great lineup. We already know one of the three games will be Destruction AllStars, a brand new PS5 game from Sony releasing next month, but right now, this is all we know.

With Microsoft tripping over itself with Xbox Live this week, it’s the perfect opportunity for Sony to make a statement with an absolutely monster month. Unfortunately, when golden opportunities present themselves to Sony, rarely does it take them. Further, this month’s lineup was certainly picked before this week’s Xbox Live debacle.

All of that said, below you can check out our predictions for the two PS4 games we think PlayStation Plus will offer next month. In addition to our reasoning behind the pick, there will also be a trailer for each game and an official description so you can read more about each game as well. As always, it’s important to keep in mind that these are just predictions based on observation, knowledge of the industry, and the history of the service. In other words, there’s no insider information, rumors, or leaks in play here. However, despite the odds, the former three have been enough for accurate predictions in the past.

Horizon Zero Dawn + Expansion

Reason: Next month, Horizon Zero Dawn will celebrate its four-year anniversary. Meanwhile, later this year, its sequel, Horzion Forbidden West, will release via the PS4 and PS5. It’s the perfect time to make not just Horizon Zero Dawn free, but its expansion, The Frozen Wilds, free. Not only is the game and its expansion several years old, but it’s published by Sony. This means not only has Sony squeezed most of the profit from it, but it won’t cost Sony a dime to add it. The cherry on top? It’s a big and popular game that will keep subscribers happy, which is ultimately the goal here.

About: “In an era where Machines roam the land and mankind is no longer the dominant species, a young hunter named Aloy embarks on a journey to discover her destiny. In a lush, post-apocalyptic world where nature has reclaimed the ruins of a forgotten civilization, pockets of humanity live on in primitive hunter-gatherer tribes. Their dominion over the new wilderness has been usurped by the Machines – fearsome mechanical creatures of unknown origin.”

prevnext

Little Nightmares

Reason: Next month, Little Nightmares 2 will release, and right now, it’s one of the more notable releases of the month. If there was ever a time to offer its predecessor, Little Nightmares, next month would be the time to do it. Not only is there considerable anticipation for the sequel in the hardcore space, but the first is widely held as one of 2017’s better games. We’ve seen the service do this in the past; offer a game’s predecessor right before it releases, and it would make sense for it to repeat this tactic again next month with Little Nightmares. Not only is it a smaller game that won’t break the bank, but Bandai Namco would presumably be more than willing to cut a deal for a huge boost in marketing for the sequel.

About: “Immerse yourself in Little Nightmares, a dark whimsical tale that will confront you with your childhood fears! Help Six escape The Maw – a vast, mysterious vessel inhabited by corrupted souls looking for their next meal.”

prevnext

Destruction AllStars

Reason: Already Confirmed

About: “Dominate the glittering global phenomenon of Destruction AllStars – the spectacular prime-time sport for dangerous drivers! Master the art of intense vehicle-based combat through timing, tactics, and skills to cause colossal amounts of damage, destruction, and devastation in vibrant arenas across the globe.”
