‘It’s like a constant gamble:’ Ukrainian couple await birth of twins in wartime Kyiv

CNN
 —

Kateryna and her husband Oleg endure what every citizen of Kyiv must – long blackouts, hours without any internet connection and constant apprehension about the next missile barrage.

But as they begin 2023, they are also preparing for the arrival of twin boys. Kateryna, who is 34, is eight months pregnant. CNN agreed to use only first names for her and Oleg as they fear for their privacy.

She’s not getting much rest ahead of the big day. The air-raid sirens blare almost every day, the crump of explosions is all too familiar. Their lives are shaped by the scheduled power cuts, as electricity is shared among the regions to mitigate the impact of Russia’s strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

“On New Year’s Eve, I tried to take a nap,” she told CNN from her house in the Kyiv suburbs. “But I woke to the sound of explosions, and they went on through the night. The sirens were on for much of the night, until 4:30 a.m.,” she said.

It’s difficult for residents to distinguish between the sound of air defenses in operation and the impact of Russian cruise missiles and drones.

“I don’t mind the blackouts,” Kateryna said, “but we worry about the next wave of Russian missiles. Will it be us? It’s like a constant gamble.”

A nearby district – Vyshhorod – was hit a month ago, and the indiscriminate nature of the strikes means that residential districts are as much at risk as power plants and railway lines. Dozens of heath facilities across Ukraine, including maternity and children’s hospitals, have been struck since the beginning of the conflict.

When the sirens aren’t wailing, Kateryna said, there is another noise that is new to her neighborhood: the chattering of generators as homes and businesses try to compensate for being without electricity for as much as 12 hours a day.

“They are the jingle bells of this Christmas,” she said.

Despite the risk and the imminent arrival of the twins, Kateryna still travels into central Kyiv twice a week to use one of the co-working spaces that have popped up across the Ukrainian capital.

These spaces have become quite professional, with furniture, heat, lighting and reliable internet, provided through Starlink terminals, bought from the company owned by Elon Musk.

Kateryna works in logistics, helping to import large containers into Ukraine. It’s more than just a livelihood. It’s also a way to contribute to the war effort.

Kateryna and Oleg are luckier than most Ukrainians in that they have a small generator at home, but they use it sparingly. There is always the risk of running out of diesel to power it – it uses a liter of fuel every hour and needs to cool down every four hours. They have to choose which appliances to run: it’s lights or laundry, they said.

They fully expect to need it long after the twins are born.

Living in Kyiv during Russia’s war on Ukraine is about being prepared. Kateryna and Oleg have cupboards full of batteries, power banks and flashlights. If the Russian missile campaign against Ukrainian infrastructure continues, as most expect it will, the scheduled power outages may become less predictable, with more emergency cuts.

There is enough food in the stores “but sometimes I have to shop with a flashlight,” Kateryna says. They keep about two months’ worth of food supplies stacked in the house, just in case the situation goes from bad to worse.

Like many people from Kyiv, Kateryna and Oleg moved away from the capital to a safer area in western Ukraine when the invasion began last February. But they never wanted to leave the country. And soon they felt the draw of home pulling them back to the city.

“I have a job here; Oleg has a job here and he cannot work remotely. We have many friends here, our home. For me it’s a nightmare to move somewhere else,” Kateryna said.

Kateryna feels they are both involved in the effort to secure Ukraine’s future. In the early months of her pregnancy, she helped Ukrainian volunteer organizations with fundraising for warm clothes and equipment for the Ukrainian army, she said.

“The company my husband works for has a fund and they help the Ukrainian fighters who are on the front line with equipment like drones and pick-up trucks. We helped collect money for such equipment,” she said.

Like many other Ukrainians, they helped a family that had fled the frontlines earlier in the war. The mother had given birth in the midst of Russian shelling of their hometown of Kreminna in eastern Luhansk region. When the family settled in a Kyiv suburb, Oleg and Kateryna helped them out with warm clothes and food.

Kateryna says she is not afraid of becoming a wartime mother. She and Oleg want their sons to grow up in an environment that would be the polar opposite of what life would be under Russian occupation.

“I really want my children to live in a free Ukraine, I want them to be safe. They have the right to safety and protection just like all other children in the world. I don’t want them to live in fear of dying from a Russian rocket, they should be happy and carefree,” she said.

Her one concern – beyond giving birth to healthy children – is that she might find herself lying in the hospital amid another wave of missile attacks. At that point, she will pray very hard, she said.

Ravens’ fourth-down gamble backfires as Bills win on final play | NFL

Tyler Bass kicked a 21-yard field goal on the game’s final play, and Josh Allen rallied the Buffalo Bills from a 17-point deficit to beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 on Sunday.

With the score tied at 20 in the final quarter, the Ravens (2-2) had second down from the Buffalo one-yard line. Two straight runs failed to reach the end zone, and Baltimore decided to go for it on fourth down from the two.

Lamar Jackson had to scramble a bit, then threw a pass into the end zone that was intercepted by Jordan Poyer for a touchback with 4:09 remaining — a disastrous result for the Ravens because it meant the Bills (3-1) weren’t pinned deep like they would have been following an incompletion.

From there, Allen calmly guided Buffalo into field goal range, capping his team’s comeback from a 20-3 deficit late in the second quarter. It was the second straight home game in which Baltimore let a sizeable lead slip away. Miami rallied from a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Ravens 42-38 two weekends ago.

Allen threw for 213 yards with a touchdown and an interception, and Jackson passed for 144 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The matchup of star quarterbacks didn’t really live up to its potential on a rainy day near the Chesapeake Bay. Jackson and Allen did their usual damage with their legs but were largely limited to short completions.

Jacksonville Jaguars 21-29 Philadelphia Eagles

Miles Sanders ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns, Jalen Hurts threw for 204 yards and ran for a score and the Eagles spoiled former coach Doug Pederson’s return to Philadelphia with a 29-21 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Sanders led an Eagles (4-0) offense that rushed for 210 yards against one of the tightest run defenses in the league. Trevor Lawrence threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns to Jamal Agnew. Lawrence was strip-sacked on the final drive of the game that sealed the win for the Eagles. It was one of four lost fumbles for the second-year quarterback.

Arizona Cardinals 26-16 Carolina Panthers

Kyler Murray threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and added one rushing and the Arizona Cardinals overcame yet another lackluster first half to defeat the Carolina Panthers.

The Cardinals defense frustrated Baker Mayfield, forcing three turnovers by the 2018 No 1 overall pick – prompting boos from the home crowd in the fourth quarter. Mayfield struggled yet again for the Panthers (1-3).

Seattle Seahawks 48-45 Detroit Lions

Geno Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score in the first half, and the Seattle Seahawks held off the Detroit Lions.

The Seahawks (2-2) were stopped on a third down late in the third quarter, but the Ford Field play clock wasn’t set properly. Seattle took advantage of the second chance and Detroit’s unorganized defense on Rashaad Penny’s 36-yard touchdown run on a third-and-16, opening a 38-23 lead.

TJ Hockenson had eight receptions and set career highs with 179 yards receiving and two touchdowns, the second of which helped the Lions (1-3) pull within three with 5:26 remaining. Smith picked apart Detroit on the ensuing drive, which ended with Penny’s 41-yard touchdown run on third-and-five. Penny finished with 151 yards rushing on 17 carries. Jared Goff’s fourth touchdown pass went to Justin Jackson with 1:06 left, cutting the deficit to three once again. The Lions’ comeback hopes ended when Seattle recovered the onside kick and Penny’s run converted a third-and-five in their territory.

Denver Broncos 23–32 Las Vegas Raiders

Josh Jacobs ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns, Amik Robertson returned a fumble 68 yards for a score and the Las Vegas Raiders won their first game of the season.

After opening their first season under coach Josh McDaniels by losing three straight one-score games, the Raiders (1-3) managed to do enough on the ground with their biggest rushing game in six years and on defense to hold off Russell Wilson and the Broncos (2-2).

Los Angeles Chargers 34–24 Houston Texans

Justin Herbert threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns and Austin Ekeler scored three times as the Los Angeles Chargers built a big early lead and held on for the win over the Houston Texans.

Houston scored 17 straight points to get within three with about eight minutes left. The Chargers (2-2) then put together a 12-play, 84-yard drive, capped by Ekeler’s 14-yard reception, to put the game away and snap a two-game skid.

Washington Commanders 10-25 Dallas Cowboys

Cooper Rush won again filling in for Dak Prescott, throwing a touchdown pass to Michael Gallup in the receiver’s 2022 debut as the Dallas Cowboys beat the Washington Commanders. Rush also had a TD toss to CeeDee Lamb while improving to 4-0.

Tennessee Titans 24–17 Indianapolis Colts

Derrick Henry rushed for a season-high 114 yards and one touchdown and Tennessee’s defense held up late Sunday to preserve the Titans’ victory.

Tennessee (2-2) have won a franchise-record four straight in the series and improved to 11-2 against AFC South opponents since 2020. Indy (1-2-1) have one win in their past six games and blew late three scoring chances that could have cut the deficit to less than seven.

Chicago Bears 12–20 New York Giants

Daniel Jones ran for two touchdowns before injuring an ankle, Saquon Barkley had 146 yards rushing and ran the wildcat offense at times after both New York quarterbacks were hurt in leading the Giants to a 20-12 victory over the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Jones scored on runs of 21 and eight yards, New York rushed for 262 yards and Graham Gano kicked field goals of 44 and 43 yards as the Giants improved to 3-1 under rookie coach Brian Daboll. It’s their best start since 2011, when they won the Super Bowl.

Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor were injured a roughly 10-minute span in the second half. Jones (8 of 13 for 71 yards and 68 yards rushing) injured an ankle when he was sacked by Jaquan Brisker late the third quarter. Taylor went into the concussion protocol after scrambling for a first down with 8:35 to go.

Jones finished the series that Gano ended with a 44-yarder for a 17-12 lead and Barkley ran the direct-snap offense that Gano finished with his 43 yarder with 5:34 to go. Jones was on the field and lined up as a receiver on those plays and he took the snaps on some of the final series for handoffs.

New York Jets 24-20 Pittsburgh Steelers

Breece Hall ran for a two-yard touchdown with 16 seconds remaining and Zach Wilson and the New York Jets spoiled Kenny Pickett’s debut in Pittsburgh by rallying for a 24-20 victory over the Steelers.

The Jets (2-2) won in Pittsburgh for just the second time in franchise history after Wilson — making his season debut — led them down the field late after the second of Pickett’s three interceptions gave New York the ball back with 3:42 to go.

Wilson took the Jets 65 yards in 10 plays, the final two coming as Hall churned his way across the goal line. The play was initially ruled a fumble, but overturned on review.

Cleveland Browns 20-23 Atlanta Falcons

Dee Alford intercepted Jacoby Brissett’s pass with less than a minute remaining and the Atlanta Falcons held on to beat the Cleveland Browns.

The Falcons (2-2) spoiled the Georgia homecoming of Cleveland’s Nick Chubb, who ran for 118 yards and a touchdown with his high school team watching.

Younghoe Koo’s 45-yard field goal, his third of the game, with 2:28 remaining gave the Falcons the lead. The Browns (2-2) moved past the 50 but on third and 23, Alford picked off Brissett’s pass intended for David Bell.

Russia dangles freedom to prisoners if they fight in Ukraine. Many are taking the deadly gamble

Over a month-long investigation, CNN has spoken to inmates caught up in Russia’s newest recruitment scheme, along with their relatives and friends. Activists believe hundreds have been approached in dozens of prisons across Russia — from murderers to drug offenders. Some have even been taken from the prison where one high-profile American jailed in Russia, Paul Whelan, is held. His brother David said in a statement in July he had heard ten volunteers had left IK17 in Mordovia for the frontlines in Ukraine

Dozens of chat messages between relatives, reviewed by CNN, detail the tempting rewards offered to fight in Ukraine, where the risk of death is high. The latest Western assessments suggest up to 75,000 Russian troops have been killed or injured since the invasion began (a claim the Kremlin has denied).

One prisoner spoke to CNN from his cramped jail cell, a cat crawling across bunk beds, and a fan clamped on top of an ageing television tried to cool the air between heavily barred windows. Imprisoned for multiple years for drugs offenses, he spoke on condition of anonymity using a contraband smartphone — quite common in Russia’s prison system — to outline the conditions on offer.

“They will accept murderers, but not rapists, pedophiles, extremists, or terrorists”, he said. “Amnesty or a pardon in six months is on offer. Somebody talks about 100,000 rubles a month, another 200,000. Everything is different.” He said the offer was made when unidentified men, believed to be part of a private military contractor’s firm, came to the prison in the first half of July, and that acceptance into the program would lead to two weeks of training in the Rostov region in southern Russia. While he had two years’ service in the military, he said the recruiters did not seem to insist on military experience.

“In my case, if it’s real, then I’m all for it,” the prisoner said. “It can make a real difference for me: be imprisoned for nearly a decade, or get out in six months if you’re lucky. But that’s if you’re lucky. I just want to go home to the children as soon as possible. If this option is possible, then why not?”

The prisoner said 50 inmates had already been selected for recruitment and placed into quarantine in the prison, but he had heard that 400 applied. Rights activists working in the Russian prison system said since the start of July they had been flooded with reports from across Russia from anxious relatives, concerned of the fate of their inmates.

“In the last three weeks [in July], there is a very big wave of this project to recruit thousands of Russian prisoners and send them to the war,” said Vladimir Osechkin, head of Gulagu.net, a prisoner advocacy group.

Osechkin said some were promised a pay-out to their families of five million rubles ($82,000) if they died, but all the financial rewards might never be honored. “There is no guarantee, there’s no real contract. It is illegal”, he said.

“It can make a real difference for me: be imprisoned for nearly a decade, or get out in six months if you’re lucky. But that’s if you’re lucky.”

A prisoner who spoke to CNN on condition of anonymity

Some of the prisoners and their family members appeared keen for the recruitment to go ahead, Osechkin said, echoing the responses of some inmate families seen by CNN.

Osechkin speculated the prisoners were used effectively as bait, to attract the fire of Ukrainian positions and enable the regular Russian military to strike accurately back. “They go first, and when the Ukrainian army sees them, and they strike. Then Russian soldiers see where the Ukrainians are, and bomb the place”.

CNN reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry and penitentiary service (FSIN) for comment on allegations that prisoners are being recruited to fight in Ukraine. Neither responded.

While recruitment is in its early days, the first reports have emerged among family members of injured prisoners being hospitalized in the Russian-backed separatist area of Luhansk.

CNN has viewed chat messages exchanged between relatives of inmates already apparently sent to the frontline. One wife details how she contacted her husband, who lay injured in one Luhansk hospital. The wife said only three prisoners from her husband’s unit of ten were still alive. CNN is aware of the identity of the injured prisoner, but has been unable to confirm his hospitalisation, as separatist medical facilities are veiled in secrecy.

Other messages between relatives also detailed the quiet desperation of prisoners, caught up in a Russian justice system where 99% of cases brought to trial result in conviction, and corruption weighs heavy on an over-burdened penal system. This month, one prisoner messaged his brother on WhatsApp about his decision to go.

Prisoner

I am going. But don’t tell mother either way. It’s better that way. Or else she’ll worry a lot and react to every piece of news.

Brother

That’s it, we will react to every news. If you tell us where you are, what you’re doing, we will be calmer as at least we will know where to look.

Prisoner

I don’t even know. Everything will be decided by the facts.

Prisoner

I do know we are going to the 12th prison and once gathered there to Rostov for 2 weeks, where there is a center, and then to the territory.

Prisoner

I am willing to go. Lots of options [in life], but now there is only one. That’s why I agreed.

Brother

You could work at the prison, read books, get qualifications in IT or languages.

Prisoner

I am already too old for that sh*t.

Moscow’s manpower options have ebbed over five-plus months of clumsy and gruelling invasion. Russian President Vladimir Putin initially stated no conscripts had been deployed in the war, before his ministry of defense admitted they had withdrawn some from the frontlines after their deployment in apparent error. The Kremlin has said there will be no general mobilization in Russia, perhaps fearing the policy would prove unpopular, especially if losses spread across the population did not significantly alter the battlefield dynamic.

Prison recruitment is, activists and prisoners said, under the auspices of the Wagner private military contractor, which is not subject to the Russian military’s ban on employing convicts. The prisoners have not shared any copies of their contracts with their relatives or activists, so the precise terms or employer remain unclear. Wagner — which works globally and is run by Yevgeny Prigozhin, a man known as Putin’s chef — is Russia’s most ubiquitous military contractor. Prigozhin denies ties to Wagner.

The lack of clarity, coupled with the silence of their loved ones, only adds to relative’s anxieties. Oksana, the half-sister of a Russian prisoner who had been offered deployment, said his mother had initially been keen to receive the salary from her son’s service, but, since he vanished from their messaging apps, was beside herself with worry.

“These are the least protected part of the population. Putin said no conscripts would be sent, but they were. With convicts, it will be very hard to reveal they have been sent.”

Oksana, the half-sister of a prisoner who had been offered deployment

“We know he was in Rostov Oblast,” Oksana said, adding he had claimed he was in another prison’s factory. “He rang her on a new WhatsApp number on 10th July and asked her to send a copy of her passport so she would get his wages,” she said. This meant it was less likely he was in prison, she said, as an inmate’s wages from prison labor are usually paid into their own account.

“I am in contact with many relatives and they all have the same scenario: Send passport details. No contact,” she said. “These are the least protected part of the population. Putin said no conscripts would be sent, but they were. With convicts, it will be very hard to reveal they have been sent.” Oksana’s name has been changed due to security concerns.

In late July, the mother received a message from another new number, familiarly written in her son’s broken Russian. It insisted he was healthy, and OK, but gave no details as to his whereabouts. “There is some time left but it is going quickly”, he wrote. “When I can I will call you.”

The mother was later rang by a person introducing themselves as an “accountant,” who pledged to bring her son’s salary in cash to her a week later.

Procter & Gamble Sounds a Warning After Strong Quarter

Procter & Gamble Co.

PG -6.18%

, maker of Tide detergent and Pampers diapers, is predicting the slowest sales growth in years as consumer belt-tightening is beginning to hit household staples.

The outlook comes after the Cincinnati-based consumer-products giant on Friday reported its biggest annual sales increase in 16 years because of the price increases that it placed on mainstays from toothpaste to toilet paper.

P&G’s organic sales, a closely watched metric that strips out deals and currency moves, rose 7% for the year ended June 30, the most since 2006. Shoppers paid substantially higher prices.

But consumers are beginning to cut back amid mounting inflation, executives said. They are using up products they stockpiled during the pandemic or holding off on replenishing supplies. Sales volumes declined 1% in the most recent quarter.

“For us, the downturn is not yet visible,” P&G finance chief

Andre Schulten

said. “We’re also not naive, we see the pressure on the consumer.”

P&G expects organic sales growth of 3% to 5% for the current year, the lowest since 2019 when the company notched a 5% increase. The company predicts consumer-goods industry growth will slow by a percentage point or more from the last fiscal year’s 5% growth.

P&G Chief Executive

Jon Moeller

said in an interview that consumers are beginning to shift to cheaper, private-label alternatives, a trend already under way in food and beverages. He called the shift small but noticeable.

Mr. Moeller said he is confident that growth, though more muted relative to the past few years, will remain solid as high employment levels coupled with healthy household balance sheets enable consumers to keep spending on necessities while they cut costs elsewhere.

“There is no inherent reason why people are just going to stop buying modestly priced consumer products, daily-use essentials where performance matters,” he said. “You have to look elsewhere to get signals of consumer stress.”

The consumer-sentiment index and the consumer-confidence index both try to measure the same thing: consumers’ feelings. WSJ explains why the Federal Reserve is keeping a close eye on consumer confidence in 2022. Illustration: Adele Morgan

P&G shares fell more than 6%.

P&G’s results and outlook largely echo the messages coming from other big consumer brands. Companies including

Coca-Cola Co.

,

McDonald’s Corp.

and

Kimberly-Clark Corp.

this week reported sales gains driven by higher prices, and executives said they would keep passing along increased costs to shoppers for now. Yet some executives also said consumers are starting to show signs of stress, trading down to cheaper brands or cutting back on how much they buy.

The world’s biggest consumer packaged goods company by sales, P&G has largely outpaced competitors amid the pandemic, especially in the U.S.

Rivals are showing signs of gaining ground.

Colgate-Palmolive Co.

on Friday said it now expects bigger-than-expected organic sales gains, predicting an increase of 5% to 7% for the calendar year, up from 4% to 6%. Last week,

Kimberly-Clark

and

Unilever

PLC also raised sales outlooks for the calendar year.

Church & Dwight Co.

Chief Executive

Matthew Farrell

said on Friday that demand is accelerating for low-cost laundry detergent, while people are giving up electric toothbrushes for manual options. “Consumers are making choices to make their budget stretch further,” he said.

A central question is how consumers and retailers respond to further price increases. P&G said Friday that it had announced to retailers another round of price increases, in mid-single-digit percentages, which will take effect toward the end of summer.

P&G, after more than four years of market-share gains, lost share in the four-week period ended July 16 compared with a year ago, Bernstein analyst Callum Elliott said in a research note analyzing retail data. Losses are in every category except for beauty, he said.

“While prices spiral, the consumer also continues to adjust to the new reality,” he said.

Mr. Moeller said P&G continues to gain market share broadly in the U.S. and globally.

Organic sales rose 7% in the quarter ended June 30, with prices up 8% on average. P&G attributed the 1% decline in sales volume primarily to Covid-related shutdowns in China and intentional downsizing of its business in Russia amid the war in Ukraine.

P&G reported $19.5 billion in revenue for the quarter, up 3% from a year ago. Diluted net earnings per share were $1.21, up 7%.

The company expects diluted net earnings per share will be between flat and up 4% for the fiscal year as it faces an anticipated $3.3 billion hit tied to foreign-exchange rates and higher costs for materials and freight.

Brittney Griner guilty plea possible ‘gamble’ to speed up Russia exit: expert

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Imprisoned basketball player Brittney Griner’s guilty plea to drug charges may play a role in speeding up her exit from Russia, but it’s a risky gamble that may have significant downsides, a hostage expert told Fox News Digital.

“I can’t say that’s the right or the wrong thing to do because, in any event, the Russian system … it’s not our system,” said Hugh Dugan, the acting special envoy for hostage affairs during the Trump administration. “But that’s the gamble based on the direction that her attorneys counsel her.

“To our eyes, it looks like, OK, this gets her into that status where they can do a [prisoner] swap.”

Griner, who pleaded guilty to drug charges July 7, has been held in Russia since February after Russian authorities say they found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage.

RUSSIAN PRISONER BRITTNEY GRINER AND THE GROWING TREND OF HOSTAGE DIPLOMACY

The guilty plea does not bring an end to the case, but some have suggested it could speed up the process along with Griner’s exit from prison. She could make herself eligible for a prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington, D.C.

Dugan explained that, by the books, Griner would have to return to the U.S. and finish her sentence in an American prison, something he believes would not happen in any formal manner if it occurred.

“In that type of prisoner swap, you’re supposed to finish your sentences and respect the judgment of each respective country,” he said, adding that he would “doubt that the Russians would force their guy to sit in prison there for another so many years.

“That would mean you set up a certain jail here for the next ten years, at least, if it were a bona fide prisoner swap under our consular procedures and agreements with Russia on these matters,” Dugan added. “We didn’t see it happen with [Trevor] Reed. I didn’t see it happen with any type of such arrangements when I was acting either.”

BRITTNEY GRINER HAD DOCTOR’S RECOMMENDATION FOR MEDICAL CANNABIS IN U.S.

Rebekah Koffler, president of Doctrine & Strategy Consulting and a former DIA intelligence officer, explained that most details of any dealings would remain out of the public and within diplomatic channels.

“They don’t want anything public,” she said. “The one thing about the Russian system that is very, very different from the American system is that there’s virtually no independent judicial process, especially in cases of high visibility like that.”

“Russians are saying she isn’t unlawfully detained. She possessed drugs,” Koffler continued. “It’s basically the clash of two legal systems.”

She added that it depends on “what Putin wants.”

Dugan worried that by pleading guilty — even if Griner does intend to make herself eligible for a prisoner swap and speed up her exit from Moscow — Griner has made Russia’s negotiating position stronger.

Part of the issue arises from Griner “admitting” to her criminal activity, which Dugan argued makes it difficult to classify her a hostage. He noted that officials had a hard time arguing for her “hostage” status since she was in pretrial proceedings for months already, meaning her status would more qualify as “wrongfully detained.”

“It’s a roll of the dice as to what we’re dealing with,” he said, noting that if Griner tried to argue her innocence, the Russian courts could set her next hearing months or even years later. “Russia will do what it wants anyway. … It’s kind of a no-win situation no matter what.”

And Griner is not the only American in Russian custody. Trevor Reed recently returned home, but Paul Whelan, an executive at automative supplier BorgWarner, remains in prison after he was left out of the prisoner swap that brought Reed home.

Corey Gamble Becomes Star Witness at Kardashian-Jenner Trial

Corey Gamble became the star witness for his girlfriend Kris Jenner and three of her daughters Tuesday when he testified in a Los Angeles courtroom that he personally witnessed Blac Chyna “punching” Rob Kardashian during a pivotal fight at the center of Chyna’s defamation claims against the world-famous women.

The testimony was critical because Chyna, 33, claims she never physically harmed Rob Kardashian, her former fiancé and father of her daughter Dream, during the blowout fight that caused her to move out from under the same roof as the only Kardashian brother.

Chyna, a model and influencer who starred with Rob in one season of the E! reality show Rob & Chyna in 2016, admits she damaged a gingerbread house, a door and a TV after Rob allegedly stole her phone the morning of the Dec. 15, 2016 fight, but she claims Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian and Kylie Jenner illegally defamed her and destroyed her TV career when they used the fight to portray her as physically abusive to E! executives.

Called before jurors Tuesday by Kardashian-Jenner lawyer Michael Rhodes, Gamble, 41, gave the first third-party, eyewitness testimony of the critical fight, and his version was dramatically different from what Chyna portrayed during her turn on the witness stand last week.

Gamble said it was shortly before “daybreak” on Dec. 15, 2016, when Kris received an emergency phone call from Rob’s number that woke the couple in their bed. He said Kris put the call on speaker phone, and claimed he could hear Chyna “screaming” obscenities at Rob, including the line, “I’m gonna kill you, you fat motherfucker.”

Gamble testified that he jumped out of bed, got dressed and refused to let Kris accompany him to the nearby house belonging to Kylie Jenner where Rob and Chyna had been living with their newborn daughter.

“Did Mrs. Jenner want to go?” Rhodes asked.

“She wanted to, but I told her ‘no’ because I felt like it would be dangerous for her, and I just don’t want anything to ever happen to her,” Gamble testified as Kris watched from the front row of the courtroom gallery with Kim and Khloé seated beside her.

Gamble said it only took him about two minutes to speed over to Kylie’s house. When he arrived, he claimed to see Chyna standing about eight feet away from Rob with some type of “rod” in her hand that she quickly dropped when she noticed his arrival, he said. According to Gamble, Chyna, whose legal name is Angela White, then picked up some type of phone cord and threw it at Rob as she also rushed at him trying to hit him.

“By the time she got to him, she started hitting him. I was able to get in the middle of them two. I even got hit two or three times. And I was able to get him away, them two separated. And I told him to get his keys and his wallet and get the hell out of there,” Gamble told the jury.

“So she hit you?” Rhodes asked.

“Well, she was hitting at Rob, but I got in the middle so I just took a couple of hits,” Gamble testified.

“You saw that with your own two eyes?” Rhodes asked.

“Yes,” Gamble replied, sitting in the witness box wearing a black suit over a black dress shirt.

“And that’s your testimony under penalty of perjury, that you saw Ms. White that morning trying to and hitting Rob?” Rhodes asked.

“Yes,” Gamble replied, adding that when he noticed his car had blocked Rob’s in the driveway, he knew he had to be quick about moving it so Rob could “get to safety.”

“By time I got to my car to move it, she had already jumped back on him and started punching him in the back, and the back of his head, and the side of his head. She was just hitting him, and I was just trying to get back,” Gamble testified as several jurors scribbled in their court-supplied notebooks.

He said as soon as he jumped out of his car and Rob prepared to back out, Chyna “threw a chair” at Rob’s car. “It hit the front side of his car, and then she tried to grab a little table, and I grabbed that out of her hands and Rob was already slowly backing out of driveway to leave,” he testified.

“And you saw that with your own two eyes?” Rhodes asked.

“Yes,” Gamble replied.

Gamble is due back on the witness stand Wednesday. His testimony followed after Kim and Khloé Kardashian testified earlier in the day that they did not intentionally interfere with Chyna’s contract on Rob & Chyna and were not the reason E! ultimately decided not to run a second season of Rob & Chyna, as Chyna claims in her lawsuit.

Kanye West has hit out on social media at his mother-in-law Kris Jenner’s partner, Corey Gamble.

The rapper has attracted criticism for his activity on Instagram in recent weeks after sharing numerous posts about his estranged wife Kim Kardashian, and her new boyfriend, the comedian Pete Davidson.

On Saturday (19 February), West, who legally changed his name to Ye last year, shared a post about Gamble, in which he described the business executive and talent manager as “Godless” and “not a great person”.

“God has a plan to remove the Godless Corey needed to never be here anyway,” he wrote. “And I think he’s a nice person Not a great person A nice person who used to be around Puff’s family then got around Justin Bieber and then when Kris got divorced he slid in.”

“He became the tv version of a father figure and as he always called hisself ‘a REAL n****’ He once told my wife he knew what music she should be listening to So when I seen him a week later I had him removed from my daughters birthday party,” West claimed.

The Donda artist also claimed that Gamble had “got my wife linked with the liberals in a big way”, and said “for some reason” he thought Gamble had worked for DuPont chemical company “or some organisation in that pedigree”.

Kanye West calls Kris Jenner ‘a hero’ while slamming her ‘godless’ boyfriend Corey Gamble

Kanye West posted a lengthy Instagram message this weekend calling Kris Jenner ‘a hero’ while lambasting her longtime beau Corey Gamble.

The 44-year-old rapper is in the process of divorcing Kris’ daughter Kim Kardashian and has been feuding with her in public over the course of the past few weeks.

In a post this Saturday morning, Kanye cryptically wrote that Corey was ‘off on his next mission’ and referred to him as ‘godless.’

‘I love Kris’: In a post this Saturday morning, Kanye cryptically wrote that Corey was ‘off on his next mission’ and referred to him as ‘godless’

During a series of public tirades two years ago near the end of his marriage, Kanye infamously attacked his mother-in-law as ‘Kris Jong Un’ – but by this weekend he took a much more respectful tone toward her.

However he was less kind to Corey, who at 41 years old is the same age as Kim and a whopping 25 years younger than Kris.

‘God has a plan to remove the Godless Corey needed to never be here anyway,’ the Power rapper wrote. ‘And I think he’s a nice person Not a great person A nice person who used to be around Puff’s family then got around Justin Bieber and then when Kris got divorced he slid in.’

Kanye alleged that Corey ‘became the tv version of a father figure and as he always called hisself “a REAL n****.” He once told my wife he knew what music she should be listening to So when I seen him a week later I had him removed from my daughters birthday party.’

The Jesus Is King impresario added of Corey: ‘We still never met his family,’ adding: ‘And I guess we never will.’

Kanye, who supported Donald Trump before running against him for the presidency in 2020, wrote that Corey ‘got my wife linked with the liberals in a deep way.’

He claimed: ‘That was his Job For some reason I always felt he worked for DuPont or some organization in that pedigree.’

Kanye then wrote that Corey is now ‘off to his next mission,’ as ‘His job is done,’ and ‘He’s not messy enough to do something like this.’

Wow: Kanye posted screen-grabs of texts apparently from Darkchild aka Rodney Jerkins, saying: ‘I’m glad Kris woke up! God is removing the evil blockers to bring restoration’

He concluded his message. ‘It’s on purpose I love Kris This woman is a hero and she’s done what she’s had to do to protect her family and make sure they prosper even if it meant telling everyone not to listen to me I respect her grind her hustle and her mind Kris is one of the best to ever do it.’

A few hours later Kanye posted screen-grabs of texts apparently from Darkchild aka Rodney Jerkins, sensationally alleging that Corey once ‘Stole all my MPC zips to give to some lil producer dude he was managing back in the day! I’m glad Kris woke up! God is removing the evil blockers to bring restoration.’

Kim filed for divorce in February of last year after months of rumors that her marriage to Kanye was on the brink of collapse.

In 2020 while campaigning for President Of The United States Kanye tearfully revealed during a rally that he and Kim considered aborting their daughter North.

He fired off a series of furious Twitter tirades accusing his wife of adultery and referring to her mother Kris Jenner as ‘Kris Jong Un.’

In response Kim, who was rumored to be livid about the abortion disclosure, posted a statement about Kanye’s struggles with bipolar disorder and pointed out ‘that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor.’

Kanye now could be facing legal trouble following last month’s incident where he was accused of pushing and punching a fan seeking an autograph.

Los Angeles law enforcement have nearly completed their investigation into the case and will be forwarding it to the L.A. City Attorney’s Office, who will then decide whether to file criminal charges against the 44-year-old rapper, per TMZ.

Though West was not interviewed by the police — allegedly due to his busy schedule — sources believe that paparazzi video of the incident and witness statements could provide enough evidence for a criminal charge.

Meanwhile, the controversial musician was back to posting on his Instagram Friday night.

He shared a numerical rundown of his $2million income since launching a $200 Stem Player where his new album Donda 2 will be exclusively available.

West then shared a list of all the people he has alleged ‘beefs’ with, including Taylor Swift, his ex-wife Kim Kardashian, and most shockingly, American abolitionist Harriet Tubman, among many others.

Ye also shared a black and white photo of himself, writing, ‘There are two kinds of people People on my team or losers.’

Back to posting: Ye, 44, shared a black and white photo of himself to Instagram, writing, ‘There are two kinds of people People on my team or losers’

The list, which was originally shared by Hip Hop By The Numbers, was not accurate according to Ye, who declared in the caption that it should be longer.

‘Come on guys… This list is twice as long,’ he wrote, adding more names that included, music streaming platforms Apple and Spotify, chief executive officer of Universal Music Group Lucian Grainge, as well as Hillary Clinton.

The Donda hitmaker also couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Kim’s new boyfriend, SNL comedian Pete Davidson, whom he has nicknamed Skete.

‘And of course Skete and any and all corny sh** in general,’ he stated, adding, ‘Can somebody from Chicago let these people know what Skete meant when we was growing up. It’s up for everybody!!!!!’

Kim filed for divorce from Kanye in February 2021 and has since requested a judge to declare her single as West has fought back against the divorce, both in court and on social media. The couple has four children.
