Fugitive murder suspect, his teen daughter killed in shootout with deputies on 15 Freeway in Hesperia; Amber Alert deactivated

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — An abducted 15-year-old girl and her father – a fugitive wanted in the shooting death of the teen’s mother – were killed in a shootout with sheriff’s deputies on the 15 Freeway in Hesperia Tuesday, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said at an afternoon news conference that Savannah Graziano was wearing tactical gear as she ran toward deputies while the shootout was unfolding.

The teenager was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Authorities did not specify whether the teen was struck by bullets fired by her father or responding deputies.

Her father, 45-year-old Anthony John Graziano, was pronounced dead at the scene. He allegedly killed his estranged wife in a domestic violence incident on Monday in the city of Fontana.

WATCH: San Bernardino County sheriff provides update after murder suspect killed in shootout on 15 Fwy

Investigators had issued an Amber Alert after Graziano fled with his daughter, Savannah, in a white 2017 Nissan Frontier with California plates. Graziano was described as armed and dangerous.

The sheriff’s department said it received a call Tuesday morning about a vehicle matching the description of the Amber Alert that was triggered Monday for the teen. The call stated the vehicle was traveling southbound on the freeway in Barstow.

Authorities caught up to the vehicle at the Main Street exit in Hesperia and there was an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and deputies. Witnesses of the shootout reported hearing a massive exchange of gunfire.

Deputies had been in pursuit of the father’s pickup truck, and multiple shots were fired out of the rear window during the chase.

The vehicle became disabled around Hesperia, and the firefight ensued. Dicus said the girl was wearing tactical gear as she exited a truck’s passenger side and ran toward the sheriff’s deputies. The deputies did not initially realize it was the girl who was running toward them, Dicus said, because she was wearing a helmet and a military-style vest that can hold armored plates.

Even though the only weapon found was in the truck with Graziano, detectives say it’s possible his daughter was also firing.

“There may be some information that the passenger was involved in firing back at the deputies and we’re still trying to confirm that at this point,” Dicus said.

Tuesday’s crime scene caused major backups along Interstate 15. The southbound 15 was closed at Main Street.

The search for Graziano began Monday after his wife was shot and killed near a Fontana elementary school, which triggered panic among parents and schoolchildren nearby. At the time, the suspect was believed to be with his daughter.

“The man just came down the street shooting. He started shooting in that direction,” neighborhood resident Andy Davis told Eyewitness News Monday. “Hit those trees, houses across the street. They say the bullets were skipping off the street, and the woman was trying to run for her life, and unfortunately she was hit. Once she was hit I guess he shot at her a few more times.”

An Amber Alert was issued for the teen shortly after the killing, but according to the California Highway Patrol, the alert has since been deactivated.

Romero said Graziano is a Fontana resident but investigators learned he previously lived in Arizona.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa: How Sri Lanka’s runaway President went from ‘war hero’ to fugitive

Yet the final days of Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa dynasty tell a very different tale.

He had been expected to resign later that day, but Gotabaya Rajapaksa didn’t wait around to make it official. Instead, before dawn, he boarded a military plane leaving Colombo, the commercial capital of the crisis-hit country, and fled to the Maldives.

His departure is a historic moment for the island nation of 22 million, which the Rajapaksas had ruled with an iron fist for much of the past two decades before losing the faith of their once adoring citizens.

“The sight of Gotabaya Rajapaksa fleeing Sri lanka on an air force plane represents (the downfall) of this family,” said Ganeshan Wignaraja, senior research associate at the British think tank, ODI Global.

“Their legacy I don’t think is a positive one. But one hopes that Sri Lanka will move on in a new direction.”

With jubilant Sri Lankans still swimming in the presidential pool, singing in the presidential dining room and dancing around the opulent presidential grounds, it is clear many share that optimism — at least for now.

What happens during the next 24 hours will do much to determine the country’s future, with Rajapaksa’s long-term intentions remaining as yet unclear.

The rise of the Rajapaksas

As the country takes its first steps in its brave new era, experts say it would do well to consider what went wrong with the last one — starting with the rise and fall of the Rajapaksas.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa is not the first member of the family to have been president. His brother Mahinda Rajapaksa, who like Gotabaya was widely considered a “war hero” among the majority population, was elected President in 2005 and achieved near legendary status in 2009 when he declared victory in the 26-year civil war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels.

That victory gave Mahinda Rajapaksa an almost inexhaustible well of political capital to draw on and he would go on to enjoy a 10-year grip on power during which he was venerated by Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese Buddhist majority. He was popularly referred to as “appachchi” — the father of the nation — and people would often bow when he walked past and fear for him when he was unwell.

For much of his term, Mahinda Rajapaksa ran Sri Lanka like a family business, appointing his brothers to key positions; Gotabaya as Defense Secretary, Basil as Minister of Economic Development, and Chamal as the Speaker of Parliament.

And while the good times were rolling, despite gripes about nepotism, the brothers remained popular. The country saw years of growth, fueled by the government’s vast borrowing from overseas to fund public services.

But the good times weren’t to last.

Brief hiatus and comeback

While the civil war did much to create Mahinda Rajapaksa’s legend, it also contained the first signs of his downfall.

According to a 2011 United Nations report, government troops were responsible for abuses including the intentional shelling of civilians, summary executions, rape, and blocking food and medicine from reaching affected communities. The UN report said “a number of credible sources have estimated there could have been as many as 40,000 civilian deaths.”

Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government has always vehemently denied such allegations.

However, its problems began to mount.

The human rights concerns went beyond the war. Political opponents accused Mahinda Rajapaksa of giving tacit approval to far-right Buddhist groups and Sri Lanka’s Muslim and Tamil minorities feared a wider crackdown on their communities.

At the same time, anger at Mahinda’s perceived cronyism grew as signs of economic trouble emerged and it became clear that there would be a price to pay for the government’s earlier largesse.

By 2015, Sri Lanka owed China $8 billion, and Sri Lankan government officials predicted that accumulated foreign debt — both owed to China and other countries — would eat up 94% of the country’s GDP.
That year, Mahinda Rajapaksa lost a close presidential election to his one-time health minister.

“Sri Lanka is a democratic country and people were shocked at that extent of attempting cronyism,” Wignaraja said. “This combination of (nepotism) and mismanaging the economy… people were upset they elected these people.”

That might have been enough to finish off a lesser dynasty, but not the Rajapaksas.

In April 2019, Islamic militants killed at least 290 people in a string of bombings at churches and luxury hotels. A panicked country turned back to the one family they knew that had a proven record on national security.

In November of that year, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was elected as the country’s new President. And like his brother, he saw governing as a family affair.

“People have once again imposed their full confidence in us,” Mahinda Rajapaksa said after a landslide victory in parliamentary elections a year later.

“We will fulfill their aspirations and will always value the confidence they have placed in us.”

Gotabaya appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa shortly after.

‘Fall from grace’

Still, as had happened to his brother, cracks began to emerge in Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s presidency as questions over his government’s economic management continued to grow.

Experts say Sri Lanka’s economic problems were not entirely the government’s fault — but its woes were made worse by a series of bad decisions.

Murtaza Jafferjee, chair of Colombo-based think tank Advocata Institute, said the vast borrowing spree Sri Lanka embarked on to fund its public service coincided with a series of hammer blows to the Sri Lankan economy, from natural disasters such as heavy monsoons, to man-made ones.

Facing a massive deficit, Rajapaksa slashed taxes in a doomed attempt to stimulate the economy.

But the move backfired, instead hitting government revenue. Ratings agencies then downgraded Sri Lanka to near default levels, meaning the country lost access to overseas markets. Sri Lanka then had to use its foreign exchange reserves to pay off government debt. This affected imports of fuel and other essentials, which sent prices soaring.

On the streets, the Rajapaksa’s once adoring public found themselves unable to feed their families or fuel their vehicles. Now people must queue for hours for fuel, often clashing with police and military as they wait. Supermarkets shelves are barren. Medicine supplies are running dangerously low.

And it is the Rajapaksas they blame. For months, angry Sri Lankans have taken to the streets, accusing Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa of mismanaging the economy.

Those protests began peacefully but turned violent in May, prompting Mahinda Rajapaksa to resign as Prime Minister. But his decision did little to quell frustrations — and his brother remained in power as the President.

For weeks Gotabaya clung on, apparently unwilling to let the dynasty fall. But ultimately he had no choice, as the lavish home he once used to entertain power brokers was taken over by crowds escaping the heat in his sparkling swimming pool and holding picnics on his sprawling lawn.

As Wignaraja pointed out, the imagery was a fitting end to an era.

“You have this idea that the ruling elite are living very lavishly, while being very corrupt, and the ordinary person is in grave difficulty,” Wignaraja said.

“To go from being perceived as heroes, to being chased out of your own home is unthinkable. It’s a complete fall from grace.”

Fugitive yoga instructor Kaitlin Armstrong returned to US from Costa Rica

A Texas yoga instructor accused of gunning down a professional cyclist in a love-triangle murder was returned to the US Saturday, days after she was caught hiding out in Costa Rica.

Fugitive Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, had altered her appearance – and may have even gotten cosmetic surgery – after she fled the country last month in the wake of the murder of 25-year-old Anna Moriah Wilson.

In ABC 13 video, a masked Armstrong is seen in cuffs as she’s escorted by US Marshals into a waiting vehicle at George Bush International Airport. She doesn’t answer a reporter’s questions and hides her face from the news camera, the video shows.

She was taken to Harris County Jail and will be transferred to Austin, where she’ll face murder charges in Wilson’s death, according to KXAN-TV.

Armstrong is accused of killing Wilson in an Austin home on May 11 after the cyclist spent the day with Armstrong’s boyfriend Colin Strickland, also a pro cyclist. Strickland and Wilson had a romantic fling, and met up when Wilson came to town from San Francisco to prepare for a bicycle race, cops said.

Moriah Wilson was allegedly shot dead by Kaitlin Armstrong.

After Austin cops questioned her in the homicide, Armstrong sold her Jeep Grand Cherokee that was spotted on surveillance footage outside of the crime scene. She took the $12,200 from the sale and hopped a flight to New York City, then days later used someone else’s passport to fly out of Newark, NJ to Costa Rica.

She was arrested at a hostel in Santa Teresa Beach Wednesday, with her hair dyed darker and cut shoulder length, US Marshals Service officials said. She also had a bandage on her nose and bruises under her eyes, with a witness telling Inside Edition he found a $6,350 receipt for cosmetic surgery that was left behind when she was taken away in cuffs.

Armstrong’s bond will be set at $3.5 million and be subject to GPS monitoring, KXAN reported.

The Wilson family shared a statement with The Post that thanked Austin cops, US Marshals and others for their “diligence” in finding Armstrong.

Colin Strickland was the male member of the love triangle.

“We’re relieved to know this phase of uncertainty is now behind us, and we trust that justice will prevail,” the statement said. “We’d like to ask for the media to respect our privacy at this time, as they have over the last six weeks.”

Vicky White news – latest: Funeral for prison guard set as police say fugitive couple staged dry run of escape

Related video: Surveillance footage of Alabama corrections officer in hotel before vanishing with inmate

Dramatic police footage captured the moment a nationwide manhunt ended in Indiana earlier this week after capital murder suspect Casey White was apprehended and his prison guard lover Vicky White’s body was pulled from a wrecked vehicle.

Ms White, the 56-year-old corrections officer and White, an inmate serving a 75-year sentence for attempted murder, ended with a car chase and crash in Evansville. She died from what a coroner ruled to be a self-inflicted shooting wound.

White was taken into custody and told officers to help his “wife”, reports alleged. The pair were said to have been in a romantic relationship for about two years before breaking out of prison more than 10 days ago, and were unmarried.

A chilling 911 call released following the crash revealed Ms White telling the capital murder suspect: “Let’s get out and run”. She also appeared to blame White for wanting to stay “at a f****** motel” moments before their crash.

An investigation into the ordeal is still ongoing as police face mounting questions over how the fugitives evaded capture for over a week.

Coroner will not release further information

The coroner in Alabama’s Vanderburgh County ruled Alabama corrections officer Vicky White’s death to be of a self-inflicted wound on Thursdsay.

According to CNN, a spokesperson for the office said no further details will be released about the coroner’s examination however, with an investigation into her disappearance along with inmate Casey White – who was taken back into custody on Monday – ongoing.

Police are also looking at how the pair were able to gain possession of at least four handguns and an AR-15 rifle when they were captured, CBS reports.

Investigation into ex-girlfriend’s death reopened

Police have reportedly reopened an investigation into the death of escaped Alabama inmate Casey Cole White’s former girlfriend, Christy Shelton.

The 31-year-old died on 1 February 2008 after she was shot in the chest by a sawed-off shotgun inside an Alabama home belonging to White’s mother.

White, who was in a relationship with Ms Shelton at the time, was cleared as a suspect and the case was closed after her death was ruled a suicide.

Her family have always doubted that finding however, and as Rachel Sharp reports, recent events have led to the investigation being reopened:

Petitions circulate for ‘Car Wash James’ to receive award money offered for information on escaped fugitives

A petition has been started to pressure law enforcement and the Governor of Alabama to pay up on their reward offers to “Car Wash James,” the car wash owner who called police when he spotted capital murder suspect Casey White and corrections officer Vicky White in Indiana.

The US Marshal Service announced a total $15,000 reward for information leading to the arrest White and information on Ms White, and Alabama Governor Kay Ivey offered a total of $10,000 for the capture of the couple.

Amber Savallo, who started the petition, told WSILTV that the car wash owner, James Stinson, should be rewarded for his report.

“He said if you see something, say something and he did. I just really hope that James can get that from them because I feel like he deserves it 100%,” Ms Savallo said.

How did Casey White end up at the facility where Vicky White worked?

Casey White, the capital murder suspect who escaped prison and spent 10 days on the run, was not originally imprisoned at the facility where corrections officer Vicky White was working.

Mr White was originally held at the William E Donaldson Correctional Facility, just down the road from the Lauderdale County Detention Centre, where Ms White worked.

According to Fox News, when Mr White’s lawyers requested that Donaldson allow them to bring laptops in to review their case with their client, they were denied. Rather than trying to convince the prison to change its mind, the attorneys request Mr White be transferred to the detention centre, where they could review their case.

Mr White — who was already discreetly communicating with Ms White — was granted a transfer, which placed him in the same prison where Ms White worked, setting the stage for the breakout.

ICYMI: Casey White told officers he didn’t kill Connie Ridgeway as he was pulled from car wreck

A supplemental case report filed by the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office reveals new details from the moment Casey White surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody while Vicky White was found suffering a gunshot wound to the head.

In the report, Sgt. Erik Nilssen details how he approached the scene on Monday after over hearing the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force requesting assistance.

“As the male suspect, Casey White, was pulled from the vehicle, I placed him in handcuffs. Mr White had blood covering his shirt and blood coming from the back of his head,” Sgt Nilssen wrote.

He then requested the assistance of a firefighter on the scene to treat a head injury on White.

“During my interaction with Mr White, he repetitively was asking about the condition of Ms. Vicky White, whom he referred to as his ‘wife’,” Sgt. Nilssen wrote. “Mr White also kept stating that he did not kill Connie Ridgeway.”

These statements reportedly came unprompted, as Sgt Nilssen wrote that he “did not ask him any formal questions”.

White is currently awaiting trial for the 2015 stabbing murder of 58-year-old mother-of-two Connie Ridgeway.

Ms Ridgeway was found stabbed to death in her apartment in Rogersville, Alabama, on 23 October 2015.

Vicky White news – latest: Fugitive showed ‘no remorse’ over partner’s death in Evansville, police say

Related video: Surveillance footage of Alabama corrections officer in hotel before vanishing with inmate

The nationwide manhunt for a double murder suspect and the correctional officer who helped him escape ended with car chase, a crash, and and a fatality on Monday. Alabama police received a tip on Sunday — one of hundreds — that ultimately proved fruitful and led to a confrontation with escaped inmate Casey White and Vicky White, the corrections officer.

During a press conference on Tuesday, police revealed that they found a trove of weapons inside the couple’s car, as well as $29,000 in cash. According to officials, the couple planned to have a shootout with police, but were stopped before they could bring their plan to fruition.

A “short” police chase ensued, according to Lauderdale County, Alabama, Sheriff Rick Singleton, which ended when a US Marshal smashed into the pair’s Cadiallac. After the crash, Mr White was apprehended, while Ms White died following a reportedly self-inflicted gunshot.

Mr Singleton said no officers fired a shot during the car chase, and that Mr White showed “no remorse” over Ms White’s death.

Mr White was returned to jail on Tuesday after spending 10 days on the run. Investigators are still piecing together exactly what happened, how the duo coordinated the escape, and exactly what their relationship was prior — and during — their flight.

“Y’all help my wife, she shot herself in the head and I didn’t do it,” he said, according to police.

Ms White later died at hospital from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police defend investigation after car wash owner says officers didn’t take tip seriously

Officials have sought to defend their search for the fugitive lovers after the owner of an Indiana car wash said police didn’t take him seriously when he first reported the couple’s abandoned vehicle last week.

James Stinson told NewsNationNow that he noticed the 2006 Ford F-15 abandoned at Weinbach Car Wash last week.

Mr Stinson said he noticed that the pickup truck had Tennessee licence plates and alerted authorities.

But when an officer arrived on the scene they said they couldn’t do anything as the vehicle hadn’t been reported stolen, he said.

The business owner had the vehicle towed away himself last Wednesday.

It was Sunday when he was finally contacted by the US Marshals Service about the truck and Mr Stinson checked his surveillance footage, finding White on video at his business last Tuesday.

On Monday, officials released the images and confirmed the truck as belonging to the fugitives.

In Tuesday’s press conference, officials defended their actions saying that an officer ran the plate back on 2 May during routine patrols of parking lots but because it wasn’t reported as stolen didn’t take action.

When the car wash owner also reported the vehicle two days later, the officer told him he would have to wait 48 hours before it could be towed or he could remove it on his own.

At that time, officials said there was no indication it was connected to the fugitives on the run from Alabama.

Alabama fugitive Casey White, ex-officer Vicky White captured on dashcam after police chase

Newly released police dashcam footage captured the moment escaped Alabama convict Casey White was arrested following a wild police chase that ended with his fugitive jail honcho girlfriend committing suicide.

Evansville police released the nearly two-minute clip on Facebook Tuesday night, showing a patrol car race up to the field where the couple’s latest getaway car, a Cadillac, had crashed on Monday in Evansville, Indiana.

About ten law enforcement members were on the scene after US Marshals rammed the car, causing it to veer into a ditch and turn on its side, according to the footage.

Many of the authorities were holding White, 38, down on the ground, before getting him up and walking him over to the Evansville squad car in cuffs, the video showed.

Two cops then bent the hulking 6’9″ 330 pound man over the hood of the car and held him down while they frisked him, as a fire truck arrived at the scene behind him.

White, wearing a white t-shirt under a blue button down shirt, sunglasses and black pants, did not appear to resist arrest.

He surrendered after his gal pal Vicky White, 56, committed suicide by turning the gun on herself while cops closed in, according to police.

The confrontation could have been far bloodier, authorities said. Four handguns and an AR-15 were found inside the car and the fugitives were planning on having a shootout with cops but reconsidered at the last moment, according to officials.

Video of the arrest was made public shortly before Casey was extradited back to Alabama for a Tuesday night arraignment, NewsNation reported.

The Bonnie and Clyde duo — who are not related — had been on the lam for 11 days, after Vicky abused her position as the Lauderdale County assistant director of corrections by fabricating a courthouse appointment for Casey and saying she would drive him there, officials said.

The jailhouse lovebirds drove off at 9:30 a.m. on April 29, ditched White’s police cruiser in a parking lot and took off in an Orange 2007 Ford Edge, which she had bought under a pseudonym, officials said.

It wasn’t until six hours later that jail officials realized something had gone horribly awry; by then the couple had ditched their vehicle in rural Tennessee, and bought a truck that would take them to a Motel 41 in Evansville.

A series of enforced errors led cops to close in on the fugitives on Monday, leading to Casey’s capture.

Casey had been serving out a 75-year prison sentence for a 2015 crime spree that involved attempted murder, kidnapping and armed robbery.

In 2020, he confessed to a murder and was transferred to the Lauderdale County to face the new charges.

Investigators said he claimed that he was hired to kill Connie Ridgeway in 2015 and knew unpublished details about the murder. His mom told The Post that his confession was false.

“He wrote a letter to say that he murdered that woman but he didn’t really murder her, he just done that to get back up here … He just wanted to be out of that prison because it was so bad and there was no food,” Connie White said.
