Google accidentally reveals upcoming device will launch w/ Fuchsia

According to a swiftly deleted Google planning document, an upcoming device will have Fuchsia installed from day one.

In the last few years, Google has updated the original Nest Hub and the Nest Hub Max to run on the company’s homegrown Fuchsia operating system instead of “Cast OS.” While there are still quite a few other Google devices yet to be updated to Fuchsia, the next step we’ve been waiting for is for something to run Fuchsia out of the box.

Last week, Fuchsia developers submitted a new document explaining an upcoming project. 9to5Google was able to view this document before it was subsequently hidden from the public.

According to the document, Fuchsia is set to gain support for JavaScript development, intended to make it easier to manage and control a device’s features. More specifically, the work is being done to support “factories,” where new devices are tested while in production.

Eventually, Fuchsia will be used as the operating system on devices when they are manufactured in factories

More importantly, Fuchsia’s JavaScript support apparently needs to be completed in the first half of 2023 because a Fuchsia-powered device is being manufactured in the very near future.

Having a generally working solution ready by 1H2023 so the solution is available for Fuchsia’s first factory build.

In recent months, we’ve seen signs of two upcoming Google devices being added to Fuchsia code, both smart speakers. One appears to be a lower-end device, possibly the speaker-equipped Pixel Tablet dock or a third-gen Nest Mini, while the other looks like a full Nest Audio successor complete with UWB connectivity.

Based on the timing of everything, we believe it’s likely that Google’s next flagship Nest speaker — presumed to launch in either fall 2023 or spring 2024 — will be the first device to launch with Fuchsia installed by default.

Either way, this is a major step forward for Fuchsia within Google, being used more frequently by the hardware division. Broadly, 2023 has already been shaping up to be a key year in Fuchsia’s development, and the launch of new hardware would certainly solidify that.

Google completes Fuchsia rollout for Nest Hub Max

After entering the Preview Program in June, Fuchsia is now rolled out on the Nest Hub Max for all users. Google’s nascent OS is now widely available on a second device after the original Nest Hub last year.

Google tested Fuchsia on the Nest Hub Max’s Preview Program for two months before rolling out to the Production/stable channel in recent days. The latest release is 6.20211109.1.3166243 and can be found under “Fuchsia version” in System settings > About device. The Nest Hub Max and other Assistant Smart Displays (save for the 2nd-gen Nest Hub with sleep tracking) install updates at night/in the early morning.

The only user-facing change with this update is the addition of a Bluetooth menu in Settings that shows devices that have previously been paired to the Nest Hub Max. You can quickly “Pair new device” and “Use display as a Bluetooth speaker,” which is much more convenient than having to set-up via the Google Home app.

Original Nest Hub

Performance on the new OS remains the same as does the UI and features like “Look and Talk.” Meanwhile, the “app” launcher has curiously added a shortcut for “Search,” which brings the total number of shortcuts to 17.

Google will presumably bring Fuchsia to the Nest Hub (2nd gen) next. The next version of Fuchsia (F7) will remove the Hub Max’s bridge and range extender capabilities to prepare for Matter (over Thread). There should also be a bigger redesign of the Smart Display on the horizon.

Kate Middleton is elegant in a fuchsia frock at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant

Kate Middleton cut an elegant figure today as she arrived at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant alongside her husband Prince William and their three children.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 40, stunned in a pink custom Stella McCartney when gathering outside Buckingham Palace in the royal box to watch today’s spectacular £15million two-mile procession through central London.

Seated next to her children, Prince Louis, four, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince George, eight, Kate appeared effortlessly stylish in the long-sleeve dress, which featured cinched waist detailing and a flared skirt, for the last of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

Kate was joined by Charles, Camilla, Zara and Mike Tindall, and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and their husbands in the royal box, set at the end of the 2½-hour procession. It is not known if the 96-year-old Queen will make an appearance at today’s pageant, after she pulled out of two Jubilee events amid concerns for her health.

The pageant is split into four acts: For Queen and Country with a military parade; The Time of Our Lives progressing through seven decades of culture, music and fashion; Let’s Celebrate telling the story of the Queen’s life in 12 chapters with corgi puppets and carnival creations; and the Happy and Glorious musical spectacle.

Royals including Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Anne, Kate Middleton, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Zara and Mike Tindall, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in the royal box

With her hair down, Kate kept her accessories to a minimum and sported diamond earrings, while opting for a smattering of glamorous makeup to complete her look.

Her daughter Charlotte appeared just as stylish in a £140 Razorbil Summer Coat from Amaia Kids, while Louis and George looked smart in a jumper and suit, respectively.

During the pageant, celebrities will travel in decorated open top double decker buses for the decade-by-decade celebrations.

A peloton of 300 cyclists, riding vintage bikes from across the seven decades of the Queen’s reign, is to travel down The Mall led by Sir Chris Hoy and cycling golden couple Dame Laura and Sir Jason Kenny.

Close to 200 national treasures will take to the stage to serenade the Queen by singing the national anthem at the grand finale of the Platinum Jubilee festivities. Stars including Sir David Jason, Harry Redknapp, Sir Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw, Felicity Kendal, Joe Wicks and Holly Willoughby will join Ed Sheeran in a mass rendition of God Save The Queen outside Buckingham Palace at the end of the pageant.

Among the cast of colourful characters preparing to take part in the Jubilee parade on Horse Guards is a group of Daleks from the sci-fi television programme Doctor Who, threatening passers-by that they will be ‘exterminated’ as they roll along with cultural icons from the 1960s in the decade-by-decade Time of Our Lives act of the pageant.

Last night the Prince of Wales called the Queen ‘Mummy’ and described how ‘you laugh and cry with us and, most importantly, you have been there for us’ in a moving, personal tribute to Britain’s longest-serving head of state after the Buckingham Palace concert.

The monarch received affectionate tributes from the Prince of Wales and national figures during Saturday night’s Platinum Party at the Palace that saw Sir Rod Stewart, Diana Ross and Duran Duran perform for thousands in The Mall.

And in a comic sketch that delighted the nation, the Queen had tea with Paddington Bear and revealed, like the furry character, she is partial to a marmalade sandwich.

Paying tribute to the monarch after his son the Duke of Cambridge’s rallying cry for climate change action, Charles, who was joined by his wife Camilla, said: ‘You pledged to serve your whole life – you continue to deliver.’

The future king, who began his heartfelt speech with ‘Your Majesty, Mummy’ just as he did at the Diamond and Golden Jubilee pop concerts, told the Queen: ‘You have been with us in our difficult times. And you bring us together to celebrate moments of pride, joy and happiness.’

He added: ‘You have met us and talked with us. You laugh and cry with us and, most importantly, you have been there for us, for these 70 years. You pledged to serve your whole life – you continue to deliver. That is why we are here. That is what we celebrate tonight.’

Charles reflected on the Queen’s every-growing family, which now stretches to 12 great-grandchildren, and on her dual role as sovereign and royal matriarch. He said: ‘Your family now spans four generations. You are our Head of State. And you are also our mother.’

And in a touching moment, Charles spoke of his ‘much missed’ late father the Duke of Edinburgh, calling him ‘My Papa’ and saying the Queen’s late husband Philip was there ‘in spirit’.

Last night the Duke of Cambridge hailed the Platinum Jubilee concert as full of ‘optimism and joy’ as he praised the Queen for her ‘hope’ in the future of the planet.

William paid tribute to the positive outlook of his grandmother during a segment of the Platinum Party at the Palace dedicated to the environment and featuring Sir David Attenborough.

He echoed the Queen’s words from her speech to the Cop26 UN Climate Change summit, when she said working together in a ‘common cause’ always gave rise to hope.

The duke highlighted the efforts of ‘visionary environmentalists’ and went on to name broadcaster and naturalist Sir David and spoke about the pride he felt for ‘my grandfather and my father’, the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales, who have championed the natural world.

Speaking on stage to thousands gathered in The Mall, William said: ‘It’s my firm hope that my grandmother’s words are as true in 70 years’ time as they are tonight that as nations we come together in common cause, because then there is always room for hope.

‘Tonight has been full of such optimism and joy – and there is hope. Together, if we harness the very best of humankind, and restore our planet, we will protect it for our children, for our grandchildren and for future generations to come.’

Before the duke spoke, a pre-recorded message from Sir David was played featuring spectacular imagery of the planet with the Hans Zimmer orchestra playing a version of the Planet Earth II Suite as dancers from the Royal Ballet performed.

The crowds heard archive recordings of the Queen speaking about the future of the planet in 1989 during her Christmas Message: ‘The future of all life on earth depends on how we behave towards one another and how we treat the plants and animals that share our world with us.’

Some 10,000 people including a cast of 6,000 performers are involved in staging the spectacular two-mile carnival route from Horse Guards, along Whitehall to Admiralty Arch and down The Mall to Buckingham Palace

And an extract from the monarch’s Cop26 video message speech: ‘None of us underestimates the challenge ahead but history has shown that when nations come together in common cause there is always room for hope.’

William said it was ‘great to see Buckingham Palace turned into a giant Imax screen’ after video and audio from the Cop26 message was projected on to the London landmark alongside images of Philip and Charles.

He went on to say: ‘While no-one’s grandmother thanks them for talking about their age, my own grandmother has been alive for nearly a century. In that time, mankind has benefited from unimaginable technological developments and scientific breakthroughs.

‘And although those breakthroughs have increased our awareness of the impact humans have on our world, our planet has become more fragile.’

Google’s plans for Fuchsia OS teased in job listings

Google says “it’s time” to now bring its mysterious Fuchsia operating system to “additional smart devices and other form factors” beyond smart displays, according to a number of job listings first spotted by 9to5Google. Fuchsia is Google’s newest operating system which was released earlier this year for the company’s first-generation Nest Hub.

There’s been a lot of speculation about Google’s plans for Fuchsia, which unlike Android and Chrome OS doesn’t use a Linux kernel (it uses a microkernel called Zircon instead), and whose purpose is still fairly vague despite having been public for over five years. When it arrived on the Nest Hub it was more or less functionally identical to the software that preceded it. The new job listings offer some clues about what’s next for Fuchsia.

For starters, it seems like Google now has a named “Fuchsia Devices team” working on the operating system, which gives some indication of the importance of the software internally. A job listing notes that this team “is responsible for making sure we can successfully apply the Fuchsia platform to real world products that make a difference to Google and our users.”

Meanwhile, this same listing notes that Google is working to bring Fuchsia to “additional smart devices and other form factors,” which confirms it’s under development for devices beyond smart displays. This isn’t entirely surprising given 9to5Google has previously reported on the OS running on smart speakers.

There’s no mention of what exactly these new form factors are, but another of the job listings (which has since been removed) spotted by 9to5Google mentions the devices will feature “Chromecast, Video Conferencing and Machine Learning” capabilities. In this context, 9to5Google notes that “Chromecast” is likely to refer to the devices letting you “cast” a video from another device for playback, rather than the dedicated Chromecast dongles that plug into the back of a TV.

Finally, there’s a tantalizing hint that Fuchsia could either run or interact with non-Google partner hardware in a third job listing for someone who’ll “ensure that Fuchsia is bringing maximum value to partners and Fuchsia-based products.” Google has a long history of working with partners to bring Google software to non-Google hardware, and has previously partnered with companies like JBL and Lenovo on their smart displays.

None of these hints offer concrete information about what’s next for Fuchsia. But given how low-key the operating system continues to be five years after its announcement, we’ll take what we can get.

Google’s Fuchsia OS is rolling out to every first-gen Nest Hub

Google has started to push out the silent upgrade to its new Fuchsia operating system on first-gen Nest Hub devices (known as the Google Home Hub on release), meaning the secretive project will be broadly used by consumers after years of opaque development. The OS, which unlike Android isn’t based on Linux and uses a microkernel called Zircon, was previously made available to some devices enrolled in a preview program back in May.

Now, Google has confirmed to 9to5Google that a new firmware update for non-preview Nest Hub devices includes the Fuchsia upgrade, meaning that all first-gen devices should be running Fuschia already or very soon. I just checked the one on my desk — which Google explains how to do here — and sure enough, turns out it’s on Fuchsia right now.

You might’ve thought I’d have noticed that a device that I look at and interact with every day is running an entirely new operating system, but Google is attempting to make the experience as close to identical as possible. Even the pokey performance on the first-gen Nest Hub appears to be very similar, for better or worse. The only way to know you have Fuchsia is by checking the “About device” section of the settings menu, and even then the OS isn’t mentioned by name.

That means that the first widespread Fuchsia deployment isn’t quite as exciting as the possibilities imagined when word of the project first started getting out more than five years ago. At the same time, it’s quite impressive that Google has managed to seamlessly replace the core software of a popular product in a way that most people won’t ever notice.
