Smash Bros Pro Hurt Jumping From Illegal Taxi On Way To Tourney

Just trying to get away from the fakes.
Image: Nintendo

A big fighting game tournament, Genesis 9, took place from January 20-23 in San Jose, California. Top talent from around the world, including Super Smash Bros. competitors Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby, gathered at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center to play games like Guilty Gear Strive and Rivals of Aether. But for one Super Smash Bros. Melee pro, British player Elliot “Frenzy” Grossman, the Genesis 9 tournament started with an illegal taxi and, he claims, a near kidnapping.

“Got tricked into an illegal taxi coming out of [the San Francisco International Airport] and nearly got kidnapped,” Frenzy tweeted on January 19 with a picture of his scarred-up right hand. “Jumped out of the car after seeing the police chase after the vehicle and very luckily only bruised and scraped my hand and back. In the hospital [right now], [but I have] no idea how anything works here [to be honest].”

You might be wondering what the hell Frenzy’s talking about, as it sounds like some action movie stunt with Tom Cruise or something. Well, as it turns out, the Falco main, who was making his way to the Genesis 9 tourney, encountered some…complications when he touched down in California.

“So, I had just got off an 11-hour flight from London Heathrow Airport to San Francisco International Airport,” Frenzy told Kotaku in an email. “I was planning to get an Uber to my hotel in San Jose, but my phone had run out of battery on the way and wifi was often spotty at the airports. I decided to get a taxi instead and so, I walked out to the taxi stand.”

Frenzy is a pro Melee player for the British esports organization Reason Gaming. Hailing from England and maining Falco, he is the UK’s second-best player and the 47th-best Melee competitor in the world as of 2022. His record speaks for itself, though. He regularly places in the top 10 bracket at most tournaments he participates in and has a few first-place wins under his belt as well, with his last one being at the Galint Melee Open: Fall Edition 2022 back in November. The dude can game! However, he wasn’t prepared for the game of California transportation.

Beyond the Summit

“A driver approaches me and asked if I was looking for a taxi, to which I replied yes and then asked where I was going as per usual,” Frenzy said. “He shows me to the car and opens the door for me to get in with my things and as I close the door and belt up, I look out of the window and see multiple police officers with weapons drawn running towards the vehicle and shouting ‘Stop the vehicle!’ and ‘Get out!’ The driver ignores this and then accelerated immediately as I was still getting in and belting up, at which point I knew that I had made a massive mistake. In the moment I just decided that if I got out quick enough, it was safer than either the driver getting away and being at his mercy or getting involved in a police chase which could end in a crash at higher speeds.”

“When I turned around to put my seatbelt on, I saw multiple cops running out to surround the car out of the window,” Frenzy said. “They had guns drawn. The driver then accelerated, foot to the floor, and tried to get away. That was when I decided to bail out. I was familiar with this sort of thing happening from the internet, but I was caught completely off guard by this specific attempt, so I knew exactly what was going on.”

Frenzy said he was in “such an adrenaline rush” that things went blurry. One minute, he was buckling his seatbelt to head to Genesis 9. The next, he was “rolling on the ground” after jumping out of the fake taxi cab. He said he “didn’t land badly or have anything else on the road” near him to cause further injury as he rolled onto the asphalt, the car going around 15-20mph. Still, he was in “pretty serious pain,” with a backpack only somewhat cushioning his tumble and his right hand taking most of the impact. The Mills-Peninsula Emergency Department in Burlingame said Frenzy didn’t break anything but had “really bad swelling, abrasions, and bruising” on his right hand as well as “friction burns” on his back from rolling on gravel and “low blood pressure” for a while. He also got in touch with cops after the incident for a quick police report.

“The cops asked a lot about what the criminal’s exact actions were and they explained they had been after this guy that had been running this scheme for a while,” Frenzy said. “They gave me some information about the case number and who to contact. I’m not 100% sure how they caught the vehicle or the criminal as I was recovering from the jump, but I saw he was in handcuffs far away as I was being attended to later on.”

A San Francisco Police Department officer told Kotaku over the phone that, although they couldn’t divulge any specific information about the incident, Frenzy’s case is real and an “ongoing investigation” is currently in progress. The officer also told Kotaku that the individual conducting the investigation will give us a callback, but that hasn’t happened yet.

“These sorts of schemes are all over the world and, as a pretty experienced traveller, I’m usually aware of them,” Frenzy said. “However, in a lapse of judgement and after a long flight, I got tricked. They try to trick you by positioning close to where the legitimate taxi stands are and even color their cars in the same layout as legit ones. They will approach people, especially those who are on their own or who are tourists, and ask if they are looking for a taxi and where they are going. Because of this, I usually tend to stick to ride share apps when traveling, but on this occasion my phone was out of battery so I was in a rough situation.”

In the end, Frenzy made it to Genesis 9 to play some Super Smash Bros. Melee thanks to the help of the tournament’s organizers. After taking a day or two to heal up, he said he felt good enough to compete. He didn’t place that well, getting 49th in the tournament. However, he said the “event itself was amazing even despite what happened” and is “eager to return in full form next year.” Here’s hoping he gets there much safer next time.

Cowboys LB Micah Parsons responds to frenzy after comments on Jalen Hurts’ MVP candidacy

FRISCO, Texas — Micah Parsons knew the risk in the moment.

The Dallas Cowboys All-Pro linebacker understood the high-interest NFL climate, how the Philadelphia Eagles’ fan base embraces the word’s “fanatic” etymology as exuberantly as any does.

“I’m not trying to make no enemies,” Parsons told Buffalo Bills pass rusher Von Miller on Miller’s “Voncast” show this week. “I just love the game so much that I can’t, when things are off, I can’t hold it in like I’ve got to say something.”

So Parsons said it.

“If we look at the Eagles,” he wondered, “is it Hurts or the team?”

Translation: Is quarterback Jalen Hurts deserving of MVP honors if his team, a model of talent and stability, depends less on his individual performance to succeed than a counterpart like the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes?

Bleacher Report aired a clip of the conversation Tuesday, the full interview downloading Wednesday.

Thursday after practice, sweat still dripping down his face, Parsons addressed the feedback from the first question of his weekly media availability.

What does Philadelphia now think of the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native?

“I’m sure they hate me,” Parsons said. But “I’ll always, I mean: You’ve got to stand on everything you say, just as a man.”

Parsons said he didn’t mean he was standing on some fans and social media pundits’ interpretation of his conversation. Just that those who believed he was criticizing Hurts’ performance misunderstood the intention of the conversation.

After his suggestions about Jalen Hurts’ MVP candidacy made waves with Eagles fans this week, Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons followed up on Thursday. (Photo by Mitchell Leff/Getty Images)

Hurts has thrown for 3,157 yards and 22 touchdowns this season, rushing for another 686 yards and 10 scores. No quarterback has played cleaner football than his 0.8% interception rate, his 32 total touchdowns trailing only Mahomes. (The Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow and Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen also have accounted for 32 total touchdowns.)

“No pun intended or no disrespect to Hurts,” Parsons said. “I think he’s doing great this year. But you know me: I’m a defensive guy, and I said the Eagles’ defense is the team to watch. They just got hell of [defenders] making plays all year. From a defensive aspect, I know how offensive guys get all the credit.

“So I just wanted to stick up for the defensive guys.”

Parsons mentioned cornerbacks Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson, as well as Eagles offensive linemen Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata and Jason Kelce, as Philadelphia players who have impressed him on the 12-1 team.

“Why is quarterback the most valuable position when there are 22 jobs?” Parsons asked. “Now is it the hardest position? You can argue it’s probably the hardest position, that and cornerback.”

Quarterbacks exclusively have won the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award since 2013, with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers leading the pack with four of those honors. The last defensive player to win the award was Giants outside linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1986. In 36 seasons since, the league MVP has 29 times recognized a quarterback (including split awards), and the other eight winners were running backs.

Parsons is the reigning NFL defensive Rookie of the Year after a campaign featuring 13 sacks, three forced fumbles, 20 tackles for loss and 84 tackles for loss. His versatility and athleticism have continued to anchor the Cowboys’ defense this year, racking up 12 sacks in 13 games in addition to three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

Parsons has lined up primarily as a defensive end despite the Cowboys “officially” reporting him as a linebacker. He’s currently the odds-on favorite for NFL Defensive Player of the Year, per BetMGM.

Does that warrant MVP consideration? Parsons has never explicitly advocated for his own recognition so much as his position and side of the ball’s due respect.

“People forget that football is complementary,” Parsons said. “How good we do on defense helps Dak [Prescott]. If we hold the team to their 20[-yard line] and they punt, then [our returner] gets the ball back to the 50, now Dak is already on the plus side. It’s complementary football. Not everything is just QB or whatever.

“It’s defense, special teams, it’s guys who don’t get the credit.”

Parsons acknowledged that his perceived slight at Hurts generated a “s***storm,” a risk even more notable as the Cowboys host their NFC East-rival Eagles on Christmas Eve. At 10-3, Dallas would need help to catch Philadelphia in the division race. But the playoff-caliber matchup will be telling for both teams.

Parsons said he doesn’t worry about speaking his mind, believing “people should have opinions” and his — as long as they’re respectful — are a mark of authenticity.

“Not once did I ever disrespect Hurts or any other player in any way,” Parsons said. “I’m just talking football. If football is a hurtful conversation, then what are we playing for? I think the job is more hurtful than the conversation, you know.

“[Others] get to talk s*** all day. Why can’t we talk a little chatter? I don’t understand what’s so hurtful when we talk about each other.”

Astronomers capture black hole gobbling up a star in a “hyper-feeding frenzy”

Enlarge / Illustration of a star being spaghettified as it’s sucked in by a supermassive black hole during a tidal disruption event (TDE).

ESO/M. Kornmesser

Earlier this year, astronomers picked up an unusually bright signal in the X-ray, optical, and radio regimes, dubbed AT 2022cmc. They’ve now determined that the most likely source of that signal is a supermassive black hole gobbling up a star in a “hyper-feeding frenzy,” shooting out jets of matter in what’s known as a tidal disruption event (TDE). According to a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, it’s one for the record books: the furthest such event yet detected at roughly 8.5 billion light-years away.

The authors estimate the jet from this TDE is traveling at 99.99 percent the speed of light, meaning the black hole is really chowing down on its stellar repast. “It’s probably swallowing the star at the rate of half the mass of the Sun per year,” said co-author Dheeraj “DJ” Pasham of the University of Birmingham. “A lot of this tidal disruption happens early on, and we were able to catch this event right at the beginning, within one week of the black hole starting to feed on the star.”

As we’ve reported previously, it’s a popular misconception that black holes behave like cosmic vacuum cleaners, ravenously sucking up any matter in their surroundings. In reality, only stuff that passes beyond the event horizon—including light—is swallowed up and can’t escape, although black holes are also messy eaters. That means that part of an object’s matter is ejected in a powerful jet.

If that object is a star, the process of being shredded (or “spaghettified”) by the powerful gravitational forces of a black hole occurs outside the event horizon, and part of the star’s original mass is ejected violently outward. This, in turn, can form a rotating ring of matter (aka an accretion disk) around the black hole that emits powerful X-rays and visible light—and sometimes radio waves. Physicist John Wheeler once described jetted TDEs as “a tube of toothpaste gripped tight about its middle,” such that matter squirts out either end. TDEs are one way astronomers can indirectly infer the presence of a black hole.

For instance, in 2018, astronomers announced the first direct image of the aftermath of a star being shredded by a black hole 20 million times more massive than our Sun in a pair of colliding galaxies called Arp 299, about 150 million light-years from Earth. A year later, astronomers recorded the final death throes of a star being shredded by a supermassive black hole, dubbed AT 2019qiz, which provided the first direct evidence that outflowing gas during disruption and accretion produces the powerful optical and radio emissions previously observed. In January, astronomers spotted a second candidate TDE in the radio regime (dubbed J1533+2727) in archival data collected by the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope in New Mexico.

Enlarge / A black hole devours a star that has come too close. In very rare circumstances, this may also result in jets moving at nearly the speed of light that generate light observed by our telescopes at many frequencies. AT2022cmc is the most distant such event recorded to date.

Zwicky Transient Facility/R. Hurt (Caltech/IPAC)

Astronomers first spotted AT 2022cmc in February and promptly turned multiple telescopes operating across a wide range of wavelengths toward the source. These included an X-ray telescope on board the International Space Station called the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER). It was possible that the bright signal—calculated to be equivalent to the light from 1,000 trillion suns—was a gamma ray burst from the collapse of a massive star. But the data revealed a source 100 times more powerful than even the strongest known gamma ray burst.

“Our spectrum told us that the source was hot: around 30,000 degrees, which is typical for a TDE,” said co-author Matt Nicholl of the University of Birmingham. “But we also saw some absorption of light by the galaxy where this event occurred. These absorption lines were highly shifted towards redder wavelengths, telling us that this galaxy was much further away than we expected.”

Given the brightness of AT 2022cmc and its longer duration, astronomers concluded it must be powered by a supermassive black hole. The X-ray data also pointed to an “extreme accretion episode.” That’s when a whirlpool of debris forms as the unfortunate star falls into the black hole. But the brightness was still a surprise, given how far away the source is from Earth. The authors attribute this to so-called “Doppler boosting,” which occurs when the jet points directly toward Earth, much like how the sound of a passing siren gets amplified. AT 2022cmc is only the fourth Doppler-boosted TDE yet found; the last one was detected in 2011.

A black hole more than halfway across the Universe is spewing out matter at close to the speed of light.

H’wood FTX Frenzy as Michael Lewis Reveals He Spent 6 Months with Founder

WHOOPS Sam Bankman-Fried testified before Congress in May. (Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

In this issue:

  • The full CAA email reveals Michael Lewis’ next book is about Sam Bankman-Fried with at least one plot point focusing on the rivalry with Binance’s Changpeng Zhao

  • The role of former CAA agent (and Elon Musk pal) Michael Kives with Bankman-Fried

With the stunning collapse of crypto exchange FTX still rippling through the financial markets, the entertainment industry sprang into action over the weekend with a far more pressing concern: Who’s going to nab the rights to this story?

We now know at least one part of how this plays out. The town was abuzz Saturday after an email spread that revealed that Michael Lewis — the most talented and successful non-fiction writer working today — had embedded with FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried for the past six months and was making the collapsing cryptocurrency exchange the centerpiece of his next book. The Ankler obtained the email from CAA agent Matthew Snyder, originally sent to potential buyers on Friday (CAA did not immediately return a request for comment). The email reveals that not a word of the book has been written yet but, well, things just can’t wait:

The email from Snyder:

In August, Lewis hinted about his new book in an interview with Financial News.

“I really don’t want to reveal exactly what I’m writing about,” he said “But I found a character through whom I can write about — it weirdly links up Flash Boys, The Big Short and Liar’s Poker.

“I guess it is possible it will be framed as a crypto book, but it won’t be a crypto book. It’ll be about this really unusual character. You’ll learn all about crypto and you’ll learn about what screwed up market structure in the United States and so on.”

For those keeping score, Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, had agreed to take over FTX, the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, at the start of last week after FTX was unable to process customer withdrawals amid panic about both the crypto markets and Bankman-Fried’s reported co-mingling of assets between FTX and his hedge fund. In a shocking twist, Binance backed out of the deal citing “corporate due diligence” setting the stage for FTX’s bankruptcy filing and Bankman-Fried’s resignation as CEO.

FTX had a one-time valuation of $32 billion and substantial ties to the entertainment industry. Then-spouses Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen, as well as Larry David, memorably starred in much-ridiculed spots hawking the company. Steph Curry and Naomi Osaka likewise were paid endorsers.

Industry insiders likewise also have been speculating about the impact of FTX bankruptcy on one of their own: former CAA agent Michael Kives.

Ranking the NFL’s top five playmaker groups; plus, a theory on the trading frenzy and an overlooked coach

Raise your hand if you expected the Minnesota Vikings to immediately emerge as contenders under first-time head coach Kevin O’Connell. It’s Week 9, and the 6-1 Vikes hold a four-game lead in the loss column over the rest of the NFC North. Nobody saw that coming.

While I am in the cluster of football observers who were uncertain about Minnesota’s potential coming into this season, I am not surprised the team is flourishing under the direction of a head coach with exceptional communication skills and leadership ability.

As a former counselor with O’Connell at a series of prep football events (Elite 11) in the early 2010s, I watched him work closely with young quarterbacks in a camp environment near the end of his playing career. Although working at a quarterback camp obviously is not the same as leading a NFL team, the job requires a combination of savvy communication, patience and teaching skills. That’s how you get high school players to master schemes, footwork and fundamentals. And that’s a transferable skill that makes it easier to guide a group of ambitious professionals in 2022. From utilizing various teaching tactics to helping inexperienced players understand complex concepts to whispering sweet nothings in the quarterback’s ear to build up his confidence, the experience of coaching high schoolers helped O’Connell learn how to relate to today’s players. I really believe that.

Just look at how he helped Justin Jefferson take his game to another level in his third season. After some early-season struggles in which the Pro Bowl pass catcher did not get enough touches, O’Connell made a concerted effort to feed the WR1 a slew of targets throughout October. The Vikings’ play-caller scripted in some easy touches on screens, quicks and isolation routes to keep the wideout engaged in the game. In addition, O’Connell incorporated some motions, shifts and different alignments to put Jefferson in a prime position to get the ball against any coverage.

With his top playmaker happy and engaged, the offense has clicked despite a schematic makeover. Part of the attack’s success is certainly tied to Kirk Cousins’ steady play over the first half of the season. While the raw numbers might suggest otherwise — Cousins’ pass yards per game, yards per attempt and passer rating are down from 2021 — the 11th-year pro has made enough critical plays to help his team win five straight games. And here’s the vital part: O’Connell has thrown his support behind his quarterback at every turn. This is a drastic departure from how his predecessor treated the quarterback, but it could certainly pay off for the rookie head man, with a more confident QB1 willing to heed his coach’s advice because he feels the love and support. Given the importance of the head coach-quarterback dynamic, O’Connell’s communication skills and relationship-building tactics have created a trust between players and coaches that is essential to a team’s long-term success.

Kate Middleton and Prince William laud ‘brilliant’ Lionesses sparking fan frenzy | Royal | News

The Lionesses rose to the occasion and beat the pre-tournament favourites at the Amex Stadium in Brighton to reach the semi finals where they will play Sweden or Belgium. Spain opened the scoring on 54 minutes as substitute Athenea del Castillo got the better of fullback Rachel Daly and set up Esther Gonzalez to fire home.

With only six minutes left on the clock another substitute, Ella Toone, volleyed in Alessia Russo’s flick-on to take the game to extra time.

However, six minutes into the first half of extra time Georgia Stanway sent the Sussex crowd into delirium when she thumped home a shot into the top left hand corner.

The crowd erupted as Stanway sprinted over into the corner to celebrate singing the famous Euro 96 anthem “Football’s coming home”.

There were similar reverberations of joy on social media, including the official Twitter account of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Writing on the social media platform, the Cambridges lauded the Lionesses performance and comeback .

The message was signed off with a W indicating that it was written by the Duke.

The tweet read: “Great performance and comeback @lionesses brilliant team effort!

“On to the #WEURO2022 semis. W.”
