Wrong-way fatal crash: 3 killed, 3 others injured when car driving on wrong side of 210 Freeway slams into vehicle in Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. (KABC) — Three people were killed when a car driving at high speeds in the wrong direction on the 210 Freeway slammed into another vehicle in the Fontana area early Saturday, officials say.

The car, a 2012 Ford, was heading eastbound on the westbound side of the 210 through Fontana when it crashed into a 2001 Lexus with two adults and three children inside around 6:30 a.m., according to the CHP.

The driver of the wrong-way Ford, a 23-year-old man from Fontana, was pronounced dead at the scene. Also killed were the driver of the Lexus, a 43-year-old man from Highland, as well as a 16-year-old female passenger in the Lexus.

There were three additional passengers in the Lexus who were also seriously injured in the crash, a 5-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 42-year-old woman. All of the occupants of the Lexus were Highland residents, although it was not immediately known if they were family members. They were transported to local hospitals.

According to CHP dispatcher records, witnesses reported the Ford driver was swerving in and out of lanes and driving at high speeds up to 100 mph before crashing near the Citrus Avenue exit.

The crash remains under investigation.

Hesperia shootout: 15-year-old girl shot at deputies before she was killed in 15 Freeway gun battle, sheriff says

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — A 15-year-old girl shot at deputies before she was killed in a highway shootout between her father – a fugitive wanted in the death of the teen’s mother – and law enforcement, the San Bernardino County sheriff said Wednesday.

Anthony John Graziano and his daughter, Savannah Graziano, were killed Tuesday in a shootout with deputies on the 15 Freeway in Hesperia after a 45-mile chase. Shots were fired at the officers from the pickup truck as it was being chased.

Once it came to a stop, the girl, wearing a tactical helmet and vest, got out and ran toward deputies amid a hail of gunfire, police said. Authorities are investigating whether she was shot by deputies or her father, or both.

Police have said the only weapon retrieved at the scene was a rifle in the truck, where Anthony Graziano died. There is police video of the shootout that authorities are reviewing.

In a 39-second video posted on social media Wednesday, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said that evidence suggested the 15-year-old girl was “a participant in shooting at our deputies.” Dicus did not provide further specific details in the video.

RELATED: 15-year-old girl killed in Hesperia shootout had been staying with father before mother’s slaying

On Tuesday, Dicus said during a news conference that it was possible that the teenager had fired at deputies amid the chaos, but investigators were still trying to determine if that was the case.

The California Department of Justice announced Wednesday that it is investigating the shooting. A state law that took effect last year requires the department to review any officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian.

More details that shed light into what led to the highway gun battle were released Wednesday.

Police in Fontana – where Graziano’s wife, Tracy Martinez, was killed Monday near an elementary school – offered some details about the family’s life before the bloodshed.

Anthony Graziano had moved out of the family’s home a month or two before the killing, as the couple went through a divorce, Fontana Sgt. Christian Surgent told The Associated Press. Savannah Graziano left with her father, while her younger brother stayed with their mother.

Police issued an Amber Alert after Martinez’s killing, saying Savannah Graziano had been abducted by her father. Detectives are trying to determine whether or not she was forced into leaving Fontana.

A public information officer with the Fontana Police Department told Eyewitness News Savannah was in the vehicle when Anthony Graziano shot and killed his wife.

Fontana police had not received any reports of domestic violence at the home before this week, Surgent said, and child services had not been involved with the family. Neither parent was on probation or parole at the time and investigators believe Savannah was being home-schooled while she lived with her father, who police said liked to camp out in the desert and mountains in his pickup truck.

A 911 caller Tuesday reported seeing the suspect’s Nissan Frontier around Barstow.

Law enforcement located the pickup truck and chased it on the highway to Hesperia. Throughout the pursuit, Graziano was “constantly shooting back at the deputies” with a rifle through the truck’s rear window, San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said Tuesday during a news conference.

Dicus said there were “some indications” Savannah was shooting at deputies during the chase but didn’t provide any details.

A firefight in Hesperia ensued when the truck went off-road and somehow became disabled, with dozens of bullets flying. Savannah ran toward deputies – who did not realize it was her – in the chaos and went down amid the gunfire. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Her father was found in the driver’s seat and pronounced dead at the scene.

Fugitive murder suspect, his teen daughter killed in shootout with deputies on 15 Freeway in Hesperia; Amber Alert deactivated

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) — An abducted 15-year-old girl and her father – a fugitive wanted in the shooting death of the teen’s mother – were killed in a shootout with sheriff’s deputies on the 15 Freeway in Hesperia Tuesday, authorities said.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Shannon Dicus said at an afternoon news conference that Savannah Graziano was wearing tactical gear as she ran toward deputies while the shootout was unfolding.

The teenager was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly before noon.

Authorities did not specify whether the teen was struck by bullets fired by her father or responding deputies.

Her father, 45-year-old Anthony John Graziano, was pronounced dead at the scene. He allegedly killed his estranged wife in a domestic violence incident on Monday in the city of Fontana.

Investigators had issued an Amber Alert after Graziano fled with his daughter, Savannah, in a white 2017 Nissan Frontier with California plates. Graziano was described as armed and dangerous.

The sheriff’s department said it received a call Tuesday morning about a vehicle matching the description of the Amber Alert that was triggered Monday for the teen. The call stated the vehicle was traveling southbound on the freeway in Barstow.

Authorities caught up to the vehicle at the Main Street exit in Hesperia and there was an exchange of gunfire between a suspect and deputies. Witnesses of the shootout reported hearing a massive exchange of gunfire.

Deputies had been in pursuit of the father’s pickup truck, and multiple shots were fired out of the rear window during the chase.

The vehicle became disabled around Hesperia, and the firefight ensued. Dicus said the girl was wearing tactical gear as she exited a truck’s passenger side and ran toward the sheriff’s deputies. The deputies did not initially realize it was the girl who was running toward them, Dicus said, because she was wearing a helmet and a military-style vest that can hold armored plates.

Even though the only weapon found was in the truck with Graziano, detectives say it’s possible his daughter was also firing.

“There may be some information that the passenger was involved in firing back at the deputies and we’re still trying to confirm that at this point,” Dicus said.

Tuesday’s crime scene caused major backups along Interstate 15. The southbound 15 was closed at Main Street.

The search for Graziano began Monday after his wife was shot and killed near a Fontana elementary school, which triggered panic among parents and schoolchildren nearby. At the time, the suspect was believed to be with his daughter.

“The man just came down the street shooting. He started shooting in that direction,” neighborhood resident Andy Davis told Eyewitness News Monday. “Hit those trees, houses across the street. They say the bullets were skipping off the street, and the woman was trying to run for her life, and unfortunately she was hit. Once she was hit I guess he shot at her a few more times.”

An Amber Alert was issued for the teen shortly after the killing, but according to the California Highway Patrol, the alert has since been deactivated.

Romero said Graziano is a Fontana resident but investigators learned he previously lived in Arizona.

Los Angeles: Large brush fire burning next 118 Freeway in Granada Hills shuts down several lanes; 2nd fire burning in Porter Ranch

GRANADA HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Crews were battling two brush fires burning alongside the 118 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley Friday night, including one burning dangerously near homes.

The California Highway Patrol shut down several lanes of the eastbound side of the freeway near Hayvenhurst Avenue in Granada Hills.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes. It’s unknown how long the partial closure will last.

The fire broke out shortly before 9 p.m. At least one acre was burned, according to officials.

AIR7HD captured a resident getting a hose out and watering a tree next to their home as flames burned across the street.

Despite 10 mph winds, dozens of firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the Granada Hills fire in one hour, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The agency also reported a second brush fire burning adjacent to the 118 Freeway and Reseda Boulevard in Porter Ranch. That fire broke out just after 8:30 p.m.

It took about an hour and 74 firefighters to stop the forward progress of the Porter Ranch blaze, LAFD said. No structures were damaged.

Officials don’t believe at this time that the two fires are related.

Firefighters will remain at the scene of both fires to “continue containment and overhaul,” officials said.

No injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fires is under investigation.

Road rage shooting Houston: 9-year-old girl shot in head during incident on Southwest Freeway near Fondren, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A 9-year-old was shot in the head in an apparent road rage incident Tuesday night in southwest Houston.

Ashanti Grant, who is a fourth grader at Savannah Lakes Elementary in Brazoria County, remains in critical condition.

“You’re just numb. You cry so much, there’s no more tears next,” said Ashanti’s grandmother, Elaine Williams. “She’s the sweetest little angel.”

Williams is asking the community to pray for justice and healing.

“There’s nothing you can do but just pray and ask everybody else to pray for her,” Williams said.

That prayer request is being answered by fathers in the Brazoria County neighborhood where Ashanti lives and goes to school.

“It gets me kind of teared up because it makes me think about my own children,” said Stephon Davis. “I’m just totally speechless. When I heard about it, my heart sank. So, my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

“I have a son that goes to Lakes of Savannah, and I do a lot of traveling around Houston. It’s scary. I just hope all these angry people stop all this foolishness,” said a man named Kenneth.

The shooting happened at 9 p.m. at 9800 Southwest Freeway, as a family of four — Ashanti, her mother, her father, and her 11-year-old brother — were in a Tahoe headed to the grocery store.

Police believe they were going northbound on the freeway when they got between a white truck and another vehicle that appeared to be racing.

One of the racing drivers, believed to be in a white GMC Denali, cut off the family’s vehicle several times. The Denali then got behind the family’s vehicle and someone inside the Denali fired shots, wounding the girl in the head, police say.

The driver of the Tahoe was able to pull over at a Shell gas station at 7402 Fondren, where officers responded to a shooting call.

From there, paramedics took the child in critical condition to Texas Children’s Hospital, where she underwent surgery.

“She’s just an innocent child. She didn’t deserve this,” Williams said.

Ashanti’s mom, dad and brother were not hurt. Now, they’re all still at the hospital by her side.

“Meanwhile, this guy is still on the streets somewhere. He knows what he did,” Williams said. “Somebody pick up the phone, even if you’re related to them. You have to think about this kid, and how we feel that she’s in the hospital fighting for her life. A bullet went in her head.”

Police only had a vague description of the people in the Denali, saying the driver was a Hispanic man between the ages of 20 and 30 years old. He is believed to have short hair, and his passenger may have been a Hispanic woman.

Officials said they believe the Denali had arrows on the blinkers.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Major Assaults & Family Violence Division at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. There’s a $5,000 reward being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
