Matt Carpenter fractures left foot on foul ball amid resurgent season with New York Yankees

SEATTLE — Matt Carpenter’s dream comeback season with the New York Yankees might have come to an early end Monday night.

Carpenter, 36, broke his left foot when he fouled off an 89 mph slider from Seattle Mariners starter Logan Gilbert in the first inning. He will be out indefinitely.

After hobbling in pain, Carpenter was briefly checked by manager Aaron Boone but finished the at-bat and struck out swinging on the next pitch. He said he knew something was wrong but thought he could finish the at-bat and drive in a run.

“When I went to swing on the next pitch, as soon as I started to plant and rotate on that back foot, my lower body like gave out and I wasn’t able to,” Carpenter explained. “Thankfully, probably the best thing that happened was to swing and miss — because if I hit it and had to run, I might have made it worse. But I knew it wasn’t good.”

Carpenter, wearing a protective boot in the Yankees’ clubhouse after the game, said he is hopeful he might only miss a month. But a timeline won’t be determined until he sees a foot specialist.

“I don’t want to say a number because I just don’t know, but I’m holding out hope that it’ll be a situation where I could come back in the middle of September and can contribute towards a stretch run,” Carpenter said. “So we’ll see. I mean, that’s my mindset is that I’ll be back.”

Boone said he was immediately aware something was wrong and realized a change was needed when he checked on Carpenter in the clubhouse between innings.

“I knew he got it good. That’s why I went out there initially,” Boone said. “And I was just like, the way he was moving, I’m like, this isn’t good.”

Tim Locastro replaced Carpenter at DH in the third inning. The Yankees went on to beat the Mariners 9-4, snapping a season-worst five-game losing streak.

“I have no doubt in my mind that [Carpenter] is going to still make an impact on this team even while he’s hurt,” said Yankees starter Jameson Taillon, who threw seven innings to get the win. “He’s come in here right away and made an impact on a lot of people. He’s not afraid to talk pitching with the pitchers. He’s not afraid to give honest feedback. He’s one of the best guys that I’ve been around and played with, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds his way back and makes an impact.”

A front-runner for American League Comeback Player of the Year, Carpenter is batting .305 with 15 home runs and 37 RBIs in just 128 at-bats for New York this season, and he had reached base in 27 of his 35 starts. Last month, he batted .356 in 73 at-bats.

All this came after hitting seven home runs in 418 plate appearances over the previous two seasons.

The Texas native signed with the Yankees in May after he was released by the Rangers, for whom he spent the first month and a half of the season toiling at Triple-A.

Since debuting with the Yankees on May 26, Carpenter has a .727 slugging percentage, the best in MLB during that span (minimum of 100 plate appearances). New York has averaged 6.5 runs per game with Carpenter in the lineup and 4.8 runs without him.

“He’s definitely going to be missed for however long it’s going to be, but we’re hoping that we get some good news and that it’s not going to be season-ending,” Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson said.

Carpenter entered Monday night’s game following an emotional series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the team with which he spent the first 11 years of his career. Carpenter received a lengthy standing ovation prior to his first at-bat and went 2-for-12 in the series at St. Louis.

His is the latest significant injury for the Yankees. All-Star slugger Giancarlo Stanton and pitchers Luis Severino, Michael King and Miguel Castro all went down hurt last month, and they haven’t returned.

King will miss the rest of the season with a broken right elbow, while Severino (right lat strain) and Castro (right shoulder strain) are also on the 60-day injured list. Stanton is on the 10-day IL, retroactive to July 24, because of left Achilles tendinitis.

New York has the best record in the AL at 71-39 and leads the AL East by 10½ games.

Heat-Celtics: Erik Spoelstra says Payton Pritchard’s Game 3 foul on Jimmy Butler ‘was not a basketball play’

Getty Images

The Miami Heat survived Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals agains the Boston Celtics, but just barely. Miami managed to build a 26-point lead, but it evaporated over the course of the second half in part because the Heat were playing at less than full strength. Star forward Jimmy Butler had to sit out the final two quarters due to knee inflammation.

While we don’t know exactly what caused that inflammation, Butler was involved in one particularly notable play in the first half. In the second quarter, he was fouled by Celtics guard Payton Pritchard, who grabbed his leg from the ground. While he didn’t attribute Butler’s injury directly to that play, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was upset about the incident and argued that it was not a basketball play as he spoke with reporters on Monday.

“We don’t know. It could’ve had an effect,” Spoelstra said. “It was not a basketball play. We’re not really sure why it was determined as a basketball play, or if that was a legal play or if that was a safe play. We’re not gonna say it’s bigger than it was because we don’t know if that’s what triggered Jimmy’s injury but regardless it should be two separate examples. We don’t need it. We don’t care. The league doesn’t have to do anything. We’re not begging for s-h-i-t.”

Here’s a look at the play in question:

It should be noted that knee inflammation is not a new problem for Butler. He missed time with it during the regular season and earlier in the playoffs, when he sat out of a game against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. Butler’s toughness is well-known in the NBA, but he misses games fairly frequently due to recurring injuries like this. There is no way of knowing what part, if any, Pritchard played in Butler’s injury, but something caused his knee to flare up on Saturday.

Butler is expected to return to the floor for Game 4 on Monday, but he, like many of his teammates, is not completely healthy. This Eastern Conference Finals series has been one of the most physical matchups in recent postseason history, and Miami is going to need Butler if it plans to escape this series and reach the NBA Finals.

Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic gets 16th technical foul of season, faces 1-game ban

DALLAS — Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic will be suspended for Sunday’s regular-season finale unless the NBA office rescinds the technical foul called against him after the first quarter Friday night.

It was officially Doncic’s 16th technical foul of the season, triggering an automatic one-game suspension. Doncic had one other technical this season that was rescinded after a routine review by the league office.

Sunday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs could determine whether the Mavs get the third or fourth seed in the Western Conference. Dallas entered the night a game behind the Golden State Warriors and own the tiebreaker.

Doncic was upset that a foul wasn’t called on his half-court heave at the end of the first quarter, when the Mavs had a 36-13 lead over the Portland Trail Blazers. Doncic was undercut from behind by Portland’s Elijah Hughes on the play and pleaded his case to referee Tom Washington while on his back.

After getting up, Doncic walked across the court to talk to crew chief Tony Brothers, although Dallas forward Dorian Finney-Smith attempted to hold him back. Brothers called Doncic for a technical seconds later.

“I asked him, ‘How is that not a foul? How is that not a foul?'” Doncic said, offering an explanation to a Mavs official sitting on media row. “He T’d me up. That’s unfair. That’s unfair.”

Brothers ejected Mavs coach Jason Kidd in Dallas’ road loss to the Washington Wizards on April 1, calling Kidd for two quick technicals.

“Tony, he’s thrown me out as a player and now he’s thrown me out as a coach,” said Kidd, who had not been ejected this season. “What I said to him was, ‘Whose ball is it?’ And he took that personal, unfortunately, and threw me out. It happens.”

Bob Saget death investigation: Orange County Sheriff’s Office’s final report reaffirms no foul play

“Yesterday, a court order was entered prohibiting the release of certain materials gathered during the course of OCSO’s investigation into the death of Bob Saget. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office will comply with the order, while remaining committed to transparency and following the law regarding access to public records,” OCSO said in an email.

Saget’s family filed a lawsuit last month against Orange County’s sheriff and the medical examiner’s office, requesting that some investigation records related to his death be exempt from being revealed publicly. A Florida judge granted a permanent injunction Monday blocking the release of additional records related to the death investigation, CNN previously reported.
According to the OCSO’s final incident report on Saget’s death, also released Tuesday, Saget’s family requested security at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando conduct a wellness check on Saget on his checkout date of January 9 after they were unable to reach him. Hotel security contacted local authorities after finding Saget “unresponsive and cold to the touch.”

Responding authorities found the room in order with “no evidence of a struggle, any type of foul play, or that anyone else was in the room at any time during his stay,” the report says.

“Mr. Saget was lying on his back on the right side of the bed, partially covered by the sheet and bedspread, with his left arm lying loosely across his torso and his right arm by his side. The sheets, bedspread, and pillowcases on the bed were white and there were no signs of blood or bodily fluids on them or anywhere else in the suite,” the report says, adding Saget appeared to have slight swelling and a bruise over his left eye.

The report notes that while the door between the room adjoining Saget’s was unlocked, the occupying guests checked out two days before and there was no evidence of entry afterward. The report says Saget’s room was opened shortly after 2 a.m. local time on January 9, a time consistent with his departure from his show in Jacksonville that night, and not opened again until around 4 p.m. by hotel security staff coming to check on him.

“No one entered or left his room, until security entered that afternoon at the request of his family,” the report says.

Four legally prescribed medications were found in Saget’s luggage, the report says.

An autopsy conducted the following day by Chief Medical Examiner Joshua Stephany found “a fracture at the base of Mr. Saget’s skull, the evidence of bleeding around the brain, and demonstrated the transfer of force that broke the orbital bones at the front of the skull.”

Stephany “explained that the amount of force necessary to cause the fracture, coupled with the fact that the skin on the back of the head was still intact, led him to believe that the injury was most likely caused by ‘something hard, covered by something soft,’ and he gave, as an example, a fall onto a carpeted floor,” the report says.

Stephany concluded such a blow would have “stunned” Saget and caused symptoms such as dizziness, confusion and slurred speech. Stephany told investigators Saget would not have been able to drive the two hours back from Jacksonville he reportedly did in his rental car after sustaining such a traumatic brain injury, the report says.

Following the autopsy, investigators returned to the hotel to reexamine the scene “to locate specific places or items in the room that could have caused the trauma.” Nothing definitive was identified, the report said.

Stephany noted Saget’s head injury likely occurred within a few hours of his death but could have occurred in the days prior, the report says. A number of interviews conducted by authorities with people who interacted with Saget in his final days produced no evidence of drug or alcohol use or any behavior out of the ordinary, the report says.

A photo taken at the request of the valet at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando in the early morning hours on January 9 shows no visual evidence of injury or trauma to Saget’s face, the report says.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt head trauma. The manner of death was determined to be an accident, the report says.

CNN’s Joe Sutton contributed to this report.
