Striking new images reveal beauty of forgotten, and largest, amber fossil of a flower

CNN
 —

Almost 40 million years ago a flower bloomed in a Baltic conifer forest. Dripping tree resin encased the petals and pollen, forever showcasing an ephemeral moment in our planet’s past.

Scientists have taken a fresh look at the unique amber fossil, which was first documented in 1872 as belonging to a pharmacist called Kowalewski in what’s now Kaliningrad, Russia.

The striking fossil had been languishing largely forgotten in the collection of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources in Berlin (BGR), according to Eva-Maria Sadowski, a postdoctoral researcher at the Museum für Naturkunde, Berlin’s natural history museum, and author of the new study.

She said she heard about the fossilized flower, officially known as specimen X4088, in passing from a retired colleague, who she thought was exaggerating.

“He told me that he once visited the BGR and that (he) saw the most amazing and largest amber flower in their collection. I was not aware that they had an amber collection. So I asked the curator of the BGR collection if I could come to see their collection – and there I found the specimen X4088,” she said via email.

“I was more than surprised to see such a large flower inclusion.”

At 28 millimeters (1.1 inches) across, it’s the largest known flower to be fossilized in amber – three times the size of similar fossils.

Sadowski extracted and examined pollen from the amber. She found that the flower had been misidentified when it was first studied.

“The original genus name of this specimen was Stewartia of the plant family Theaceae. But we could show in our study that this was not correct, mainly based on the pollen morphology. But when the specimen was first studied in the 19th century, they (had) not discovered or studied the pollen,” she said.

The flower is closely related to a genus of flowering plants common in Asia today known as Symplocos – shrubs or trees that sport white or yellow flowers.

Originally named Stewartia kowalewskii, the authors propose a new name for the flower of Symplocos kowalewskii.

Amber fossils offer a tantalizing, three dimensional look at the past. As well as plants and flowers, a dinosaur tail, a crab, a hell ant, a spider mom and her young, an ancient bird’s foot and a lizard’s skull have been found entombed in globs of tree resin.

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports on Thursday.

Pelosi on McCarthy calling omnibus ‘one of the most shameful acts’ he’s seen in House: ‘Had he forgotten Jan. 6?’

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) rebutted House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) comment calling the government funding omnibus bill “one of the most shameful acts” in the chamber’s history, asking if he had forgotten about the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

Pelosi responded on the House floor on Friday ahead of the voting to pass the $1.7 trillion bill, saying it would likely be her last speech as Speaker on the floor.

“It was sad to hear the minority leader earlier say that this legislation is the most shameful thing to be seen on the House floor in this Congress. I can’t help but wonder, had he forgotten Jan. 6?” Pelosi said.

Her response came one day after McCarthy railed against the bill, pointing to “left-wing pet projects” that the bill funds.

“This is a monstrosity. That is one of the most shameful acts I’ve ever seen in his body,” McCarthy said. “The appropriations process has failed the American public, and there’s no greater example of the nail in the coffin of the greatest failure of a one-party rule of the House, the Senate and the presidency.”

Pelosi said the day of the House passing the bill was one of “immense patriotism” and noted that the bill includes language to reform election law in order to “thwart future attempts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power.”

The omnibus bill, which the House passed mostly along party lines in a 225-201-1 vote, includes the Electoral Count Reform Act. That legislation clarifies that the vice president only has a ceremonial role in counting the votes of the Electoral College in a presidential election.

Members of Congress pushed for that bill in response to efforts from former President Trump and his allies to urge former Vice President Mike Pence to try to refuse to count certain votes in favor of President Biden in key states in the 2020 presidential election.

Pelosi said the omnibus is “truly a package for the people.”

McCarthy and other GOP opponents to the bill had argued that Congress should pass a continuing resolution to fund the government until Republicans take control of the House next year and can pass a smaller omnibus package.

McCarthy also has backed hardline members who called for bills from Republican senators who voted for the omnibus bill to be stopped, saying they would be “dead on arrival” if he becomes Speaker.

Russia has “forgotten all the lessons of World War II”

Russian President Vladimir Putin could move to formally declaring war on Ukraine as soon as May 9, which would allow for the full mobilization of Russia’s reserve forces as they attempt to conquer eastern and southern Ukraine, US and Western officials believe.

May 9, known as Russia’s “Victory Day,” commemorates the Russians’ defeat of the Nazis in 1945. Western officials have long believed that Putin would leverage the symbolic significance and propaganda value of that day to announce either a military achievement in Ukraine, a major escalation of hostilities — or both.

Officials have begun to hone in on one scenario, which is that Putin formally declares war on Ukraine on May 9. To date, Russian officials have insisted that the conflict was only a “special military operation” with the central goal of “denazification.”

“I think he will try to move from his ‘special operation,’” British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told LBC Radio last week. “He’s been rolling the pitch, laying the ground for being able to say ‘look, this is now a war against Nazis, and what I need is more people. I need more Russian cannon fodder.’”

Wallace added that he “would not be surprised, and I don’t have any information about this, that he is probably going to declare on this May Day that ‘we are now at war with the world’s Nazis and we need to mass mobilize the Russian people.’”

More context: A formal declaration of war on May 9 could galvanize Russian citizens and surge popular opinion for the invasion. It would also, under Russian law, allow Putin to mobilize reserve forces and draft conscripts, which officials say Russia desperately needs amid a growing manpower shortage. Western and Ukrainian officials have estimated that at least 10,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in the war since Russia invaded just over two months ago.

Other options for May 9 include annexing the breakaway territories of Luhansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, making a major push for Odesa in the south, or declaring full control over the southern port city of Mariupol.

The US has “highly credible” intelligence reports that Russia will try to annex Luhansk and Donetsk “some time in mid-May,” the US Ambassador to OSCE Michael Carpenter said on Monday. There are also indications that Russia could be planning to declare and annex a “people’s republic” in the southeastern city of Kherson.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price said on Monday that there is “good reason to believe that the Russians will do everything they can to use” May 9 for propaganda purposes.

“We’ve seen the Russians really double down on their propaganda efforts, probably, almost certainly, as a means to distract from their tactical and strategic failures on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Price said at a State Department briefing.

Price added that he had “seen the speculation that Russia may formally declare war” on May 9, and said, “that would be a great irony if Moscow used the occasion of ‘Victory Day’ to declare war, which in itself would allow them to surge conscripts in a way they’re not able to do now, in a way that would be tantamount to revealing to the world that their war effort is failing, that they are floundering in their military campaign and military objectives.”

“I’m quite confident that we’ll be hearing more from Moscow in the lead up to May 9,” Price added. “I’m quite confident that you will be hearing more from the United States, from our partners, including our NATO partners, in the lead up to May 9 as well.”

Kirby And The Forgotten Land Claims Third In March NPD Results

The NPD results, which cover game sales in the US along with a lot of other data, are now emerging for March. Nintendo published or distributed two notable titles last month, and their results were mixed.

Though the full public data isn’t due until 26th April, Axios writer Stephen Totilo has shared the non-mobile gaming chart (covering Steam, PlayStation, Xbox and of course Switch), which is based on dollar sales. It’s worth nothing that Nintendo doesn’t share its eShop data, so those download sales won’t contribute.

Even accounting for the disadvantage of download sales not counting towards this chart, that’s an impressive result for Kirby and the Forgotten Land in third. It had strong word of mouth at launch along with positive reviews, and that clearly converted to strong sales in an important market. Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are still doing well in the top 10, too.

Also of note, Kirby is also 7th in the ‘year to date’ chart.

Back to the results for March, Triangle Strategy makes its debut down in 16th place (based purely on boxed copy sales). Though it’s not exactly lighting up the chart it’s a relatively niche genre, while globally it managed around 800,000 sales in its first two weeks.

So there you have it, some solid results for Switch titles. Let us know what you think, as always, in the comments!
