Shireen Abu Aqleh: bullet that killed journalist given to US forensic experts | Middle East and north Africa
The Palestinian Authority on Saturday said it has given the bullet that killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh to American forensic experts, taking a step toward resolving a standoff with Israel over the investigation into her death.
Abu Aqleh, a veteran correspondent who was well known throughout the Arab world, was fatally shot while covering an Israeli military raid on 11 May in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinians, along with Abu Aqleh’s colleagues who were with her at the time, say she was killed by Israeli fire.
The Israeli army says that she was caught in the crossfire of a battle with Palestinian gunmen, and that it is impossible to determine which side killed her without analysing the bullet. The Palestinians have refused to turn over the bullet to Israel, saying they do not trust them.
The Palestinian attorney general, Akram al-Khatib, said on Saturday that the bullet was given to US experts “for technical work”. He reiterated the Palestinian refusal to share the bullet with the Israelis.
Al-Khatib said the Palestinians welcome the participation of any international bodies to “help us confirm the truth”. “We are confident and certain of our investigations and the results we have reached,” he said.
It was not immediately clear what the American experts could discover without also studying the Israeli weapon that Israel says might have fired the shot. There was no immediate word from Israel on whether it would share the rifle.
The Palestinian announcement comes just over a week before President Joe Biden is to visit the region.
A Palestinian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was discussing a diplomatic matter, said the issue was raised in a phone call between the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, and the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, and that both sides hope to resolve the issue before Biden’s visit.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
A Florida department has hired a forensic engineer to investigate the incident at the Orlando FreeFall ride where a 14-year-old died after falling off of the ride on March 24.
Tyre Sampson, 14, died after falling from the Orlando FreeFall at ICON Park on March 24.
In a press conference on Friday, Nikki Fried, the Florida commissioner of agriculture and consumer services said that her department has hired a forensic engineer with Quest Engineering to assist with the investigation of the Orlando FreeFall incident.
The engineers assisting in this investigation were also involved in the investigation after the Sand Blaster rollercoaster at Daytona Beach derailed on June 14, 2018, which injured nine people, according to Fox 35 Orlando, according to Fried.
Following the investigation into the Orlando FreeFall incident, Fried said that changes to rules will be made if needed.

“I’m also here today to reassure Tyre’s family, friends and all those impacted by this tragedy that we are fully committed to finding out what happened so we can better prevent such tragedies from happening in the future,” Fried said. “And that’s why we will not be jumping to any conclusions before the information is provided to us, and we know all the facts.”
Fried said that the ride is shut down “indefinitely,” and said that the ride’s future operating status will be determined at the conclusion of the investigation.
The Sand Blaster rollercoaster was shut down by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services following an investigation.
An initial inspection into the Orlando FreeFall was conducted in December 2021 before the ride opened to the public, and no issues were found with the ride. Amusement park rides are required to have safety inspections performed every six months following the initial safety inspection.
FLORIDA FREEFALL TEEN DEATH: RIDE SAFETY EXPERT HARNESS ‘WAS NOT ON CORRECTLY’
An accident report filled out by an employee after Sampson fell from the Orlando FreeFall states that the harness was still in a locked position when the ride stopped.
“FreeFall was coming to [sic] down the tower. When the magnets engaged, the patron came out of the seat,” an employee wrote in the report. “Harness was still in a down and locked position when the ride stopped.”
The ride manual for the Orlando FreeFall states that the maximum passenger weight is just over 286 pounds. Sampson was 6 feet, 5 inches tall and weighed 330 pounds, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Fried said that the issue of maximum weight will be addressed during the investigation and said that the department will do everything it can to prevent another incident like this from happening.
“We are going to do everything in our power and including potentially increasing our power to make sure that something like this never happens again. This is my solemn promise to all that we are going to have a complete and thorough investigation that is going to be transparent,” Fried said.

In a statement, the SlingShot Group, which operates the Orlando FreeFall, said that it will cooperate with the investigation and expressed its deepest sympathy to Sampson’s family and friends.
“We are heartbroken with the incident that took the life of one of our guests. We extend our condolences and deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We are working with the Sheriff’s Office and ride officials on a full investigation. The Orlando FreeFall will be closed until further notice,” the statement reads.
Brian Laundrie autopsy: Forensic anthropologist says fugitive died of suicide

Deceased fugitive Brian Laundrie died of suicide, a forensic anthropologist told Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino on Tuesday.
Laundrie took his own life with a gunshot wound to the head, Bertolino said.
“Chris and Robert are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families,” he said.
The Florida District 12 Medical Examiner said Thursday that officials completed their investigation through a scene response by medical examiner personnel, a complete examination of the recovered skeletal remains, a consultation with a forensic odontologist that confirmed a comparison of dental records, a consultation with a forensic anthropologist and a comparison of remains by DNA analysis.
Laundrie was a person of interest in the disappearance and homicide of his former fiancée, Gabby Petito — a tragedy that captured the nation’s attention for more than a month after Petito’s family reported her missing on September 11.
BRIAN LAUNDRIE UPDATE: FAMILY SURRENDERED GUN TO LAW ENFORCEMENT ON SEPT. 17 – BUT ONE WAS MISSING
Authorities recovered Laundrie’s partial skeletal remains, along with a backpack and other personal items belonging to Laundrie, on Oct. 20 at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in North Port, Florida. The following day, after a comparison of dental records, the agency confirmed the remains as Laundrie’s.
The medical examiner’s office conducted an initial autopsy in late October, but results came back inconclusive. The remains were then sent to a forensic anthropologist.
Forensic anthropologists analyze human remains, conduct DNA tests and look for any signs of weapon evidence to help determine how a person died.
BRIAN LAUNDRIE FOUND: PARENTS MAY HAVE JUST MISSED DISCOVERING SON THEMSELVES
Authorities also found Laundrie’s notebook on Oct. 20, which police say “may be salvageable.” It is unclear what is inside the notebook.
Laundrie had returned to his parents’ home on Sept. 1 without her. Petito’s family reported her missing 10 days later. Laundrie’s parents then reported their son missing on Sept. 17 but clarified later that the last time they saw him was Sept. 13.
The North Port Police Department and the FBI searched the Myakkahatchee Creek park for more than a month before eventually finding Brian’s remains and personal items with help from Laundrie’s parents in an area that had previously been underwater.

Police previously directed questions about a firearm from Fox News to the FBI. The FBI has not released any new information about the case at the time of publication.
Petito-Schmidt family attorney Richard Stafford told Fox News’ Laura Ingle that the family “has been aware of the circumstances surrounding the suicide of the sole suspect in Gabby’s murder” and “will not be making a statement at this time due to the request of the United States Attorney’s Office and the Teton County Prosecutor’s Office.”

“The family was asked to not comment and let the FBI continue their investigation and allow the United States Attorney’s Office make a determination on whether any additional individuals will be charged,” he said. “When that determination is made, we will have a statement.”

Andre HIill shooting: Forensic pathologist rules Andre Hill’s death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds
Hill was shot once in the chest and three times in the right leg, according to Dr. Elaine Amoresano, the forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy.
Adam Coy, the former officer, shot and killed Hill, a 47-year-old Black man, on December 22 within seconds of their encounter. Hill was unarmed and walking toward Coy holding an illuminated cell phone in his left hand, body camera footage shows.
The officer was fired in December
Coy started shooting within a few seconds of seeing Hill and turned his camera on after the shooting. However, the camera’s look-back feature captured 60 seconds of video, with no audio, prior to Coy turning it on.
The body camera footage appears to show Coy and Hill walking toward one another. It’s not clear whether Hill or Coy said anything during their brief interaction.
In the first few seconds of Coy’s body camera video in which audio is available, Coy ordered Hill to get his hands out to the side, ordered him to get on his stomach and warned an officer to not get close because one of Hill’s arms is under the car where he collapsed.
About 37 seconds after the shooting, Coy asked whether a medic was coming.
Wurst luck: half-eaten sausage helps German police solve cold case | Forensic science
German police say they have solved a nine-year-old burglary case after DNA found on a half-eaten piece of sausage matched that of a man detained in France over an unrelated crime.
Police in the western town of Schwelm said on Thursday the sausage belonged to the victim, and the suspect – a 30-year-old Albanian citizen – appeared to have helped himself to a bite during the break-in in Gevelsberg in March 2012.
Officers from the Nordrhein-Westfalen force said in a statement the DNA pattern did not produce a direct hit at the time but that automatic comparisons with international databases led to a link later on.
The connection was made after French police took a DNA sample from a man involved in a violent crime that matched the burglary sample, alerting investigators.
It was not clear what type of sausage – known in Germany as wurst – the burglar had nibbled, though police said it was a hard variety.
However, the statute of limitations on the burglary has expired, meaning the suspect is unlikely to be extradited to Germany. Schwelm police said the suspect remains free.
