Kohl’s CEO Michelle Gass Resigns to Join Levi Strauss
Kohl’s Corp.
KSS 7.80%
Chief Executive
Michelle Gass
is leaving the department-store chain early next month to join
Levi Strauss
LEVI -2.12%
& Co. with plans to have her take over as the jeans maker’s CEO.
At Kohl’s, Ms. Gass has been under attack from activist investors for sales declines and a steep drop in the company’s stock price. In September, activist investor Ancora Holdings Inc., urged the company to replace Ms. Gass and its chairman. Kohl’s shares, down nearly 40% on the year, jumped 8% in early Tuesday trading.
Ms. Gass will leave Kohl’s Dec. 2 and join Levi Jan. 2, where she will serve as president with oversight of Levi’s brand and global digital and commercial operations. The 54-year-old will succeed Levi’s CEO
Chip Bergh
within 18 months, the company said. Mr. Bergh, who is 65 years old, has run Levi Strauss since 2011.
Kohl’s appointed
Tom Kingsbury
to serve as interim CEO until a permanent successor is named. Mr. Kingsbury is a former
Burlington Stores Inc.
CEO who joined Kohl’s board in 2021 as part of a settlement with activists. In a statement, Ancora said it was the right time to find new leadership and it was pleased that Mr. Kingsbury was the interim CEO.
Kohl’s also released preliminary results for the quarter ended Oct. 29. The company said that same-store sales decreased 6.9% compared with a year earlier. Net sales fell 7.2%. The company earned 82 cents a share compared with $1.65 a share.
It plans to report full results on Nov. 17.
Kohl’s, with roughly 1,100 stores, has struggled to attract shoppers amid rising competition from discounters, fast-fashion chains and online competitors. Earlier this year, Kohl’s scrapped plans to sell itself to the owner of Vitamin Shoppe—in a debt-funded deal initially worth $8 billion but later reduced. The company’s market capitalization has fallen to around $3 billion.
Ms. Gass wasn’t schooled in the art of selling clothes. She studied chemical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and received a master’s in business administration from the University of Washington. She then spent six years honing her marketing skills at
Procter & Gamble Co.
before joining
Starbucks Corp.
in 1996.
When she departed the coffee chain after nearly 17 years, founder
Howard Schultz
credited her with helping develop such products as the Frappuccino.
Ms. Gass joined Kohl’s in 2013 as chief customer officer with responsibility for marketing and the e-commerce business. In 2015, her role expanded to chief merchandising officer, and in 2018 she took over as CEO and joined the board.
Ms. Gass had some early success at the helm of Kohl’s, telling her team that they needed to think differently and shouldn’t be afraid to try new ideas. She formed a partnership with
Amazon.com Inc.
that allowed shoppers to use Kohl’s stores to return goods bought at the online retailer. Last year, she wooed Sephora away from JCPenney, where it had operated shops for more than a decade.
She overhauled the merchandise, dropping poorly performing brands such as Dana Buchman, and bringing in new ones, including Tommy Hilfiger, Eddie Bauer and Cole Haan. She expanded the selection of activewear from brands such as
Nike Inc.,
Adidas AG and
Under Armour Inc.
Ms. Gass also simplified discounts and pricing and is refurbishing stores. The company is on track to repurchase $1.3 billion in stock in the current fiscal year.
Yet, the moves haven’t improved Kohl’s business enough to satisfy some shareholders. While sales initially increased, they had started to decline even before the pandemic forced retailers to temporarily shut stores and kept consumers homebound. The company has faced two years with activist investors calling for board changes.

Paris Hilton Goes As Sailor Moon for Halloween Party With Carter Reum – Footwear News
Channeling her all-time favorite anime character, Paris Hilton attended Casamigos’ Halloween party in Los Angeles yesterday night, accompanied by her husband, Carter Reum. “Dressed up as my Childhood icon Sailor Moon. Happy #Halloween!” she wrote on Instagram.
The “Sailor Moon” costume was inspired by the anime’s main character, Usagi. Hilton styled a glimmering outfit alongside statement-making shoes for her night out as the Japanese superheroine. While her husband dressed up as Tuxedo Mask, another character from the show.
From the styling to the unmistakable pigtails in her hair, Hilton really did the character justice. She wore a white corseted cage bodysuit adorned with a big red bow. The socialite paired the corset with a blue pleated miniskirt and collar. Every part of the outfit was decked out in crystals, making the “Heiress” shine whenever she moved.
Effectively elevating her look, Hilton wore crimson knee-high boots dotted with rhinestones galore that had the star shining down to the tips of her toes. The calve climbing footwear also featured chunky platform heels that further elevated the “Stars Are Blind” songstress’ look.
Often considered the sexiest boot silhouette, thigh-high boots most often stop mid-thigh for a leg-climbing look. Commonly made of leather or suede, thigh-high boots are most often worn with short skirts or shorts, dresses featuring high slits, or very tight-fitting pants.
The “Paris in Love” star’s shoe wardrobe is wide-ranging. Hilton has worn a variety of pumps and sneakers by the likes of Steve Madden, Jimmy Choo, and Giuseppe Zanotti over the years, frequently accented with maximalist crystals or mixed materials. Her footwear rotation also includes Alaïa boots, Rothy’s flats, and comfy K-Swiss sneakers.

Drake celebrated his 36th birthday with a star-studded bash at Sexy Fish in Miami on Monday night. Several famous faces pulled up to the shindig including DJ Khaled, 21 Savage and Kanye West’s former girlfriend Chaney Jones.
Drake looked dapper for the evening, arriving in a lilac suit. Ensuring that all eyes would be on him, the award-winning rapper complemented his ensemble with a purple silk shirt that boasted a diamond-encrusted collar and cuffs.
To take things up a notch, Drake accessorized with diamond stud earrings and a blinged out chain. Drake’s hair was styled in neat stitch braids.
Completing Drake’s look was a set of grey leather boots. The silhouette had an elongated almond-shaped toe and included a small, stacked block heel.
Boots are a must-have during the fall season. The shoe style easily adds a stylish touch to any wardrobe and offers endless versatility.
When it comes to fashion, Drake is comfortably in his own lane. He tends to take a more subtle approach to style, often dressed in Stone Island tracksuits, retro Nike sportswear, and custom-tailored suits. Statement pieces are peppered in from time to time as well like vintage outerwear, uncommon throwback jerseys, or valuable Supreme collaborations. When he wants to rep his squad, expect some pieces from his OVO clothing label to also make an appearance.

Lululemon footwear marks new product to take on Nike, Adidas
Lululemon CEO Calvin McDonald said that launching into shoes was the next natural step for the leggings maker.
Source: Lululemon
Lululemon is venturing into footwear, marking a new product category for the maker of leggings and sports bras and deepening its rivalry with giants like Nike and Adidas.
The company’s first-ever running shoe for women, called Blissfeel, will be available to purchase starting March 22 in select markets across North America, Mainland China and the United Kingdom. The running shoes will retail for $148.
The launch marks Lululemon’s official foray into the sneaker category, having only previously sold a small collection of shoes from Athletic Propulsion Labs. The footwear business, for women and men, could prove to be another important lever of growth for the athletic clothing retailer as it seeks to catch its larger competitors.
Sneaker sales have boomed during the pandemic as more consumers pick up running or opt for more comfortable shoes while working from home. It’s an incredibly heated category with competitors ranging from giants like Nike and On Running to more niche brands like Allbirds, which also makes a running shoe.
Lululemon said it’s aiming to launch a men’s footwear collection next year, at which point it will expand its selection for women with special-edition shoes and seasonal sneakers.
In the meantime, Lululemon said it will debut two types of women’s cross-training sneakers this summer, priced at $138 and $148, followed by a slide-on shoe meant for post-workout wear, at $58, and another training sneaker with a more supportive midsole, at $128.
Lululemon will begin this year by launching a running shoe and other options for women, followed by a men’s footwear collection in 2023.

The launches check off a long-awaited goal for Lululemon and Chief Executive Calvin McDonald.
Back in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, McDonald said the company saw a whitespace in the shoe market. He hinted that at some point Lululemon would begin selling its own footwear, building on the success it had with APL.
McDonald said in a statement Tuesday that branching into the footwear market was the next natural step for the company.
“It represents an exciting moment for our brand,” he said. “We are entering the footwear category the same way we built our apparel business — with products designed to solve unmet needs, made for women first.”
Athletic footwear sales in the United States grew 17% for men and 24% for women in 2021 compared with 2020 levels, according to data from market research firm NPD Group.
The top sneaker brands for women, notably, are Nike, Skechers, Adidas, Brooks and New Balance, according to NPD sports analyst Matt Powell. Powell said he anticipates sales of both women’s and men’s sports footwear will grow a low-single-digit percentage this year, coming off of last year’s gains, with the first half of 2022 facing bigger challenges for the industry than the latter half.
Early last year, another round of stimulus checks from the government propelled consumer spending, Powell said. And many shoppers opted for a new pair of shoes.
Lululemon’s sales for the 12 months ended Jan. 31, 2021 grew to $4.4 billion from $3.98 billion a year earlier. Its stock is down more than 20% year to date.
Nike, for comparison, raked in $44.5 billion in sales in its fiscal year ended May 31, up 19% from prior-year levels. Adidas has yet to report its results for 2021. Its revenue for the 12 months ended Dec. 31, 2020, amounted to 19.8 billion euros, or about $21.6 billion.
