3M to Cut Jobs as Demand for Its Products Weakens

said it is cutting 2,500 manufacturing jobs globally as the company confronts turbulence in overseas markets and weakening consumer demand.

The maker of Scotch tape, Post-it Notes and thousands of other industrial and consumer products said Tuesday that it expects lower sales and profit in 2023 after demand weakened significantly in late 2022, pulling down quarterly performance.

The St. Paul, Minn., company forecast sales this year to slip from last year’s level with weak demand for consumer products and electronic items, particularly smartphones, tablets and televisions, for which 3M provides components. Fourth-quarter sales for 3M’s consumer business dropped nearly 6% from the same period a year earlier.

“Consumers sharply cut discretionary spending and retailers adjusted their inventory levels,” 3M Chief Executive

said during a conference call. “We expect the demand trends we saw in December to extend through the first half of 2023.”

3M shares were down 5.2% at $116.25 Tuesday afternoon, while major U.S. stock indexes were little changed.

The company said demand for its disposable face masks is receding, as healthcare providers spend less on Covid-19 measures, and mask demand returns to prepandemic levels. 3M said it expects mask sales to decline between $450 million and $550 million this year from 2022.

3M executives said the spread of Covid infections in China is weighing on sales there, and sporadic plant closings are interrupting industrial production. China also is reducing production of consumer electronics because of weakening consumer demand, they said, and 3M’s exit from its business in Russia last year will also contribute to lower sales this year.

The 2,500 layoffs represent roughly 2.6% of the company’s workforce, which a regulatory filing said was about 95,000 at the end of 2021. Mr. Roman declined to specify where the job cuts will take place, or whether the company might make further reductions as it reviews its supply chains and prepares to spin off its healthcare unit.

“We’re looking at everything that we do as we manage through the challenges that we’re facing in the end markets and we focus on driving improvements,” he said.

The company said it would take a pretax restructuring charge in the first quarter of $75 million to $100 million.

Mr. Roman said the job cuts were unrelated to litigation facing the company. 3M is defending against allegations that the so-called forever chemicals it has produced for decades have contaminated soil and drinking water. It is also involved in litigation over foam earplugs its subsidiary Aearo Technologies LLC sold to the military. About 230,000 veterans have filed complaints in federal court alleging the earplugs failed to protect them from service-related hearing loss.

3M has said the earplugs were effective when military personnel were given sufficient training on how to use them. In litigation over firefighting foam that incorporated forms of forever chemicals, 3M is expected to argue that the products were produced to U.S. military specifications, granting the company legal protection as a government contractor.

In both cases, Mr. Roman said the company is focused on finding a way forward.

3M said the strong value of the U.S. dollar continues to erode sales from other countries when foreign currencies are converted to dollars.

The company forecast that sales for the quarter ending March 31 will be down 10% to 15% from the same period last year. For the full year, the company projects sales to fall between 6% and 2%, and expects adjusted earnings of $8.50 a share to $9 a share. The company earned $10.10 a share in 2022, excluding special charges, and analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting the company to earn $10.22 in 2023.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted a profit of $541 million, or 98 cents a share, compared with $1.34 billion, or $2.31 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, including costs tied to exiting the company’s operations making forever chemicals, adjusted earnings came to $2.28 a share. Analysts were looking for adjusted earnings of $2.36 a share, according to FactSet.

Sales fell 6% to $8.08 billion for the quarter, slightly topping expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Mr. Roman said there were promising signs for some of 3M’s businesses, including in biopharma processing, home improvement and automotive electrification, the last of which he said grew 30% in 2022 to become a roughly $500 million business.

“There’s more to it than consumer electronics, but certainly the consumer-electronics dynamics are the story of the day,” he said.

20 dividend stocks with high yields that have become more attractive right now

Income-seeking investors are looking at an opportunity to scoop up shares of real estate investment trusts. Stocks in that asset class have become more attractive as prices have fallen and cash flow is improving.

Below is a broad screen of REITs that have high dividend yields and are also expected to generate enough excess cash in 2023 to enable increases in dividend payouts.

REIT prices may turn a corner in 2023

REITs distribute most of their income to shareholders to maintain their tax-advantaged status. But the group is cyclical, with pressure on share prices when interest rates rise, as they have this year at an unprecedented scale. A slowing growth rate for the group may have also placed a drag on the stocks.

And now, with talk that the Federal Reserve may begin to temper its cycle of interest-rate increases, we may be nearing the time when REIT prices rise in anticipation of an eventual decline in interest rates. The market always looks ahead, which means long-term investors who have been waiting on the sidelines to buy higher-yielding income-oriented investments may have to make a move soon.

During an interview on Nov 28, James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and a member of the Federal Open Market Committee, discussed the central bank’s cycle of interest-rate increases meant to reduce inflation.

When asked about the potential timing of the Fed’s “terminal rate” (the peak federal funds rate for this cycle), Bullard said: “Generally speaking, I have advocated that sooner is better, that you do want to get to the right level of the policy rate for the current data and the current situation.”

In August we published this guide to investing in REITs for income. Since the data for that article was pulled on Aug. 24, the S&P 500

has declined 4% (despite a 10% rally from its 2022 closing low on Oct. 12), but the benchmark index’s real estate sector has declined 13%.

REITs can be placed broadly into two categories. Mortgage REITs lend money to commercial or residential borrowers and/or invest in mortgage-backed securities, while equity REITs own property and lease it out.

The pressure on share prices can be greater for mortgage REITs, because the mortgage-lending business slows as interest rates rise. In this article we are focusing on equity REITs.

Industry numbers

The National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (Nareit) reported that third-quarter funds from operations (FFO) for U.S.-listed equity REITs were up 14% from a year earlier. To put that number in context, the year-over-year growth rate of quarterly FFO has been slowing — it was 35% a year ago. And the third-quarter FFO increase compares to a 23% increase in earnings per share for the S&P 500 from a year earlier, according to FactSet.

The NAREIT report breaks out numbers for 12 categories of equity REITs, and there is great variance in the growth numbers, as you can see here.

FFO is a non-GAAP measure that is commonly used to gauge REITs’ capacity for paying dividends. It adds amortization and depreciation (noncash items) back to earnings, while excluding gains on the sale of property. Adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) goes further, netting out expected capital expenditures to maintain the quality of property investments.

The slowing FFO growth numbers point to the importance of looking at REITs individually, to see if expected cash flow is sufficient to cover dividend payments.

Screen of high-yielding equity REITs

For 2022 through Nov. 28, the S&P 500 has declined 17%, while the real estate sector has fallen 27%, excluding dividends.

Over the very long term, through interest-rate cycles and the liquidity-driven bull market that ended this year, equity REITs have fared well, with an average annual return of 9.3% for 20 years, compared to an average return of 9.6% for the S&P 500, both with dividends reinvested, according to FactSet.

This performance might surprise some investors, when considering the REITs’ income focus and the S&P 500’s heavy weighting for rapidly growing technology companies.

For a broad screen of equity REITs, we began with the Russell 3000 Index
RUA,
-0.18%,
which represents 98% of U.S. companies by market capitalization.

We then narrowed the list to 119 equity REITs that are followed by at least five analysts covered by FactSet for which AFFO estimates are available.

If we divide the expected 2023 AFFO by the current share price, we have an estimated AFFO yield, which can be compared with the current dividend yield to see if there is expected “headroom” for dividend increases.

For example, if we look at Vornado Realty Trust

the current dividend yield is 8.56%. Based on the consensus 2023 AFFO estimate among analysts polled by FactSet, the expected AFFO yield is only 7.25%. This doesn’t mean that Vornado will cut its dividend and it doesn’t even mean the company won’t raise its payout next year. But it might make it less likely to do so.

Among the 119 equity REITs, 104 have expected 2023 AFFO headroom of at least 1.00%.

The list includes each REIT’s main property investment type. However, many REITs are highly diversified. The simplified categories on the table may not cover all of their investment properties.

Knowing what a REIT invests in is part of the research you should do on your own before buying any individual stock. For arbitrary examples, some investors may wish to steer clear of exposure to certain areas of retail or hotels, or they may favor health-care properties.

Largest REITs

Several of the REITs that passed the screen have relatively small market capitalizations. You might be curious to see how the most widely held REITs fared in the screen. So here’s another list of the 20 largest U.S. REITs among the 119 that passed the first cut, sorted by market cap as of Nov. 28:

These simple food choices could reduce your risk of dementia

A study published in July 2022 in Neurology, a journal from the American Academy of Neurology, suggests that eating whole foods might decrease dementia risk. The research was done on 72,083 adults over age 55 with no dementia at baseline in the UK Biobank. 

The authors investigated the association between ultra-processed foods (UPF) and dementia, where participants’ diets were evaluated based on how much UPF was consumed. The highest group had a diet of 28% UPF compared to the group with the lowest consumption of UPF at 9%.

The results implied that for every increase of 10% in the daily dietary intake of UPF, the risk of dementia increased by 25%. Conversely, replacing 10% of UPF foods with whole (unprocessed or minimally processed) foods was associated with a 19% lower risk of dementia.

“Ultra-processed foods are meant to be convenient and tasty, but they diminish the quality of a person’s diet,” said study author Huiping Li, Ph.D. of Tianjin Medical University in China. 

“These foods may also contain food additives or molecules from packaging or produced during heating, all of which have been shown in other studies to affect thinking and memory skills negatively.”

“Our research not only found that ultra-processed foods are associated with an increased risk of dementia, but it also found replacing them with healthy options may decrease dementia risk.”

UPF vs. whole foods

UPF is made for convenience. Think ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat. These foods are high in sugar, fat, and salt and low in protein and fiber. A few examples of UPF include fatty, sweet, savory, or salty packaged snacks. 

Also, baked products made with ingredients such as hydrogenated vegetable fat, sugar, yeast, whey, emulsifiers, and other additives, ice creams and frozen desserts, chocolates, candies, pre-prepared meals like pizza and pasta dishes, and distilled alcoholic beverages such as whisky, gin, rum and vodka. 

On the other hand, whole foods are unprocessed or minimally processed, such as fresh fruit, vegetables, fish, seafood, legumes, milk, eggs, grains, spices, meat, and fermented alcoholic beverages (think alcoholic cider and wine). 

Minimally processed foods leave the nutrients intact. This contains methods like canning, vacuum packing, and refrigeration – which extend the food item’s life, including adding vitamins and pasteurization (as in milk).

How to tell the difference?

Lena Beal, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says that labeling is the answer.

“Ultra-processed foods involve baked goods, snack cakes, chips, and candy at the grocery store’s check-out counter. They also include soft drinks, sweet breakfast cereals, ice cream, mass-produced bread, and flavored yogurts.”

Beal advises, “Look at two labels: Cheetos and tortilla chips. Then, look at the long list of ingredients on the Cheetos bag compared to tortilla chips. Tortilla chips have corn, salt, and some plant seed oil, right? So, it could be safflower, sunflower, or canola. Three ingredients.”

Why are UPFs so popular in the U.S.?

“Two words: convenience and cost,” says Beal. In the U.S., UPF consumption increased from 53.5% of calories (2001-2002) to 57% (2017-2018). During the same period, whole food consumption decreased from 32.7% to 27.4% of calories.

According to Beal, “Americans eat 31% more packaged food than fresh foods than nearly any other country. Ultra-processed food comes from substances extracted from food through processes like milling or extrusion with added ingredients. They are highly manipulated and take on more of a chemical presence than food.”

The perceived convenience and the cost of UPF play a factor in their popularity. Not to mention advertising. Marketing UPF makes them seem delicious and harmless, but learning to read nutritional labels is essential.

In addition, choosing to eat healthier might entail prepping your meals at home. Why? Because it can be a special time shared with family or a partner as well as a nutritious path to adding more fruits and vegetables (fresh, pre-cut, or flash-frozen) to one’s diet. 

When it comes to wholesome go-to’s, “use nuts (full of Omega-3s for heart and brain health), raisins, and dark chocolate to make a trail mix,” suggests Beal. “Seeds, nuts, cut-up fruits, and vegetables are nature’s fast food. Make a smoothie out of fresh fruit and dairy. Use peanut butter on celery sticks.”

Traveling and eating out

Beal suggests asking for condiments and dressings on the side when dining out. For instance, choose a sauce you can see through instead of cream sauce. Also, order baked meat or fish instead of fried, skip the pre-meal bread or eat less of it (whole wheat is also a better alternative to white bread).

Lastly, when traveling, locating a grocery store near where you are staying will make finding whole foods easier than getting all your food from restaurants.

The bottom line

Good news! You are in charge of your diet. So each time you choose what to eat or drink, ask yourself: what is the best, minimally processed, healthy choice for nutrition?

said Friday, as the company started sweeping layoffs just over a week after the billionaire took it over.

Mr. Musk, in a tweet Friday, blamed the cutback in advertising on “activist groups pressuring advertisers.” He said that the company hadn’t changed content moderation and had tried to address activists’ concerns. “Extremely messed up!” he said, casting the pullback as an assault on free speech.

said it had recommended to its various brands they pause advertising on Twitter to assess any revisions the company makes to its brand safety guidelines.

Mr. Musk’s tweet comes after Twitter, in a message sent to staff Thursday, said staffers would be notified by 9 a.m. Friday if they had lost their position or were still employed, the Journal reported.

Twitter by early Friday began notifying employees who had been laid off, according to documents viewed by the Journal.

Roughly 50% of Twitter’s workforce has been hit with layoffs, according to an email sent overnight to one of those affected in the U.S. that was viewed by the Journal. It didn’t specify what departments the terminated employees worked in.

Twitter had more than 7,500 employees at the start of this year, according to a regulatory filing.

The staff reductions were intended “to place Twitter on a healthy path,” according to the company’s Thursday email. “We recognize that this will impact a number of individuals who have made valuable contributions to Twitter, but this action is unfortunately necessary to ensure the company’s success moving forward,” the company added.

In the layoff emails, Twitter said employees assigned “nonworking” status would continue to receive compensation and benefits through a separation date, which for one person was designated as early February and for another early January. It said to expect to receive one month’s base pay in severance approximately 45 days after the termination date, in addition to providing instructions for returning company property such as laptops.

Twitter didn’t say whether employees should expect to receive year-end bonuses, which historically have been based on individual and company performance. The company also didn’t mention whether employees would receive equity payments during the nonworking period.

Some employees said they had lost access to Twitter communication tools overnight. An email sent to an employee in Canada and seen by the Journal said that suspended access to the company’s systems didn’t mean the person’s employment has been terminated.

The layoffs cap a tumultuous period for Twitter staff that began in April, when the company disclosed Mr. Musk had become its largest individual shareholder. Mr. Musk then agreed to join Twitter’s board, before deciding not to. He launched a bid for the company that Twitter eventually accepted. Weeks later Mr. Musk raised questions about the deal, then tried to abandon it, before reversing course again last month and saying he would go ahead with the transaction. Along the way, he at times criticized the company and its executives.

The Thursday email said Twitter’s offices would be temporarily closed to ensure the safety of employees, the company’s systems and customer data. Employees who were in an office or on their way to one were asked to go home, according to the email.

Twitter employees have been bracing for job cuts. The Journal previously reported that the company was drafting plans for broad layoffs, with one investor saying up to 50% of staff could be cut and that employees would be evaluated to determine the scope of the firings.

Signs of pushback against Twitter’s actions emerged in the wake of the apparent dismissals. In a federal lawsuit dated Thursday, a handful of Twitter employees accused the company of violating federal and California law in failing to provide enough warning of a mass layoff.

The lawsuit, filed in California federal court by five former employees of Twitter who said they were terminated this week, said the company’s layoffs violated the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act and its California equivalent, which require giving 60 days of advance written warning of dismissing a large number of employees of a company at once. The lawsuit asked the court to issue an order blocking Twitter from its alleged violations of the acts. Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In April, as Mr. Musk was moving to buy Twitter, entrepreneur

Jason Calacanis,

a close ally, suggested cutting the number of Twitter employees to roughly 3,000, according to messages between the two, which were released as part of litigation around the transaction.

A staff of 3,000 would represent the lowest level since 2013, the year Twitter went public, when the platform had about 2,700 employees and its revenue was roughly 13% of its level last year.

Twitter’s employee numbers began climbing in 2019, after ranging between approximately 3,000 and 4,000 for several years. Twitter has said that the increase in recent years was driven by investments in engineering, product, design and research.

Even before officially taking control at Twitter, Mr. Musk had indicated that he was concerned about the company’s expenses. Twitter has posted a loss in eight of its past 10 fiscal years, according to FactSet.

Mr. Musk moved quickly to make personnel changes at the top of the company. Last week, on the same day he closed the deal, he fired Twitter Chief Executive

Parag Agrawal

and three other top executives. Mr. Musk fired the executives for cause and is saying he isn’t required to pay them multimillion-dollar severance packages, the Journal reported. Other executives have departed since.

Mr. Musk has leveraged other parts of his business empire to try to put his imprint on Twitter. He brought in some

Tesla

engineers to begin working on reshaping the social-media platform, the Journal reported. Also added to an internal company directory were some people who appeared to work for the Boring Co., a tunneling business Mr. Musk founded.

Broadly, the social-media industry is struggling with weaker revenue from digital advertisers. Such advertising has slowed due to several factors, including rising inflation, the war in Ukraine, and

Apple

privacy changes that have made it harder to track the performance of ads. Twitter rival Snap Inc. this year said it was letting 20% of staff go.

Facebook

parent Meta Platforms Inc. also has indicated it was trimming ranks.

Tech companies beyond social media also have embarked on belt tightening that is leading to job losses and hiring freezes. On Thursday, ride-hailing company

Lyft Inc.

and payments company Stripe Inc. announced major layoffs, and

Amazon.com Inc.

said it would freeze corporate hiring for months.

Amazon Has Been Slashing Private-Label Selection Amid Weak Sales

has started drastically reducing the number of items it sells under its own brands, and the company has discussed the possibility of exiting the private-label business entirely to alleviate regulatory pressure, according to people familiar with the matter.

Amazon’s private-label business, with 243,000 products across 45 different house brands as of 2020, has been a source of controversy because it competes with other sellers on its platform. The decision to scale back the house brands resulted partly from disappointing sales for many of the items, the people said. It also came as the retail-and-technology giant has faced criticism in recent years from lawmakers and others that it sometimes gives advantages to its own brands at the expense of products sold by other vendors on its site.

Over the past six months, Amazon leadership instructed its private-label team to slash the list of items and not to reorder many of them, the people said. Executives discussed reducing its private-label assortment in the U.S. by well over half, one of them said.

a longtime Amazon executive who took over as head of its global consumer business in January 2021, the people said. Mr. Clark left the company last month. As a result of that review, Mr. Clark pushed the team to focus on bestselling commodity goods, along the lines of

Target Corp.’s

“Up & Up” or

Walmart Inc.’s

“Great Value” brands, rather than offer the extensive range of items Amazon currently does, the people said.

Amazon’s private-label business started in 2009 with consumer electronics products such as cables and expanded into other categories. It now encompasses everything from vitamins and coffee to clothing and furniture, with brand names such as Amazon Basics, Goodthreads and Solimo. However, Amazon has said that its house brands only account for about 1% of its retail sales. Amazon’s revenue last year, including other businesses such as its cloud-computing operation, totaled $469.8 billion.

The growing scale of its own offerings increasingly put Amazon in competition with other sellers on its platform, angering those sellers and resulting in antitrust scrutiny.

In 2020, The Wall Street Journal detailed how Amazon employees used data from its platform on individual third-party sellers to develop Amazon-branded products that compete with those sellers. The Journal also reported that year how some major brands were angered by products Amazon developed for its own labels that closely resembled their items, claiming the tech company copied their designs.

Amazon at the time said it was opening an internal investigation into how its private-label employees use seller data and if they were violating a company policy not to use such data. In testimony to Congress, then-CEO

Jeff Bezos

said “I can’t guarantee you that policy has never been violated.”

Amazon’s handling of such competition issues has been under scrutiny from a congressional committee investigating big tech companies and from regulators including the Securities and Exchange Commission, which the Journal reported in April was examining how the company disclosed some details of its business practices. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating Amazon’s competitive practices.

Amazon has said its platform provides opportunity for nearly two million small- and medium-size businesses that sell there, and that it competes fairly and in a way that benefits its customers.

The scrutiny has prompted Amazon executives over the past year to consider fully exiting private brands, and how the company might go about that, the people said. The executives decided not to take any action until necessary, potentially as a concession they could offer if the FTC or another regulatory agency were to threaten or file litigation, some of the people said.

After a version of this article published online, Amazon said in a statement that: “We never seriously considered closing our private label business and we continue to invest in this area, just as our many retail competitors have done for decades and continue to do today.”

A spokeswoman declined to comment on whether it has discussed the possibility, or to say how many private label items it is cutting.

U.S. lawmakers have proposed legislation aimed at big tech companies including Amazon that would bar dominant tech platforms from favoring their own products and services. On Thursday, Amazon proposed concessions to settle two antitrust cases against it in the European Union. Amazon promised not to use nonpublic data about sellers on its marketplace, after the EU accused Amazon of violating competition law by using nonpublic information from merchants to compete against them.

Mr. Bezos, who stepped down as CEO last year to be executive chairman, has long been a backer of the private-label business. In the past he has bristled at its relatively small sales, said some of the people.

A few years ago, Mr. Bezos gave the private-label team a goal to reach 10% of Amazon sales by 2022, the Journal has reported. The team responded by rapidly adding thousands of items to try to juice sales, said the people involved.

Many items ended up sitting in warehouses or needing to be marked down.

Under Mr. Clark, private-label teams did a profitability review of each private-label item, determining which ones didn’t sell enough to hit their profit threshold and targeting them to be phased out. The strategy now is to make fast-selling private-brand items, such as Amazon’s phone-charging cables, that it can place at warehouses all over the country to deliver quickly, some of the people said, instead of tens of thousands of items that sell in low quantities.

Kellogg Splitting Into Three Companies as It Shifts Focus to Global Snacks

said it plans to break up its business into three companies, seeking to jump-start its larger, faster-growing snacks business while helping its namesake cereal brands regain their footing on supermarket shelves.

The move, which Kellogg said would separate snacks such as Pringles, Cheez-Its and Pop-Tarts from cereal-aisle staples including Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops, aims to create more agile, focused companies and marks a shift from the food industry’s decadeslong strategy of pursuing acquisitions and building scale.

“Bigness for bigness sake doesn’t make a lot of strategic sense,” said Kellogg’s Chief Executive Steve Cahillane, who will head the $11.4 billion snacking business, which accounted for 80% of Kellogg’s net sales last year.

The Covid-19 pandemic delivered a boost in sales for Kellogg and other food makers, as families prepared more meals in their kitchens as they stayed home from work and school. The grocery industry now is working to retain that momentum, but food makers over the past year have been battered by rising costs for fuel, labor, ingredients and packaging, creating what Mr. Cahillane called an unprecedented stretch of inflation.

Kellogg said it expects to complete the split by the end of 2023, with the North America cereal business potentially separating first, followed by its plant-based foods business as the third company. Kellogg said it also is considering selling the plant-based foods unit, which is predominantly composed of the

MorningStar

Farms brand. It has yet to name the individual companies.

Kellogg’s stock price rose about 3% on Tuesday. Shares were already up 4.8% this year as of Friday, bucking the broader market slump. The S&P 500 packaged foods and meat index on Tuesday was down about 3% so far in 2022.

Kellogg’s breakup plan follows splits announced last year by General Electric Co. and Johnson & Johnson. In the food sector, Kraft Foods orchestrated a similar split about 10 years ago, spinning off its North American grocery business to focus on its faster-growing snack brands including Oreos and Triscuits, a business it named Mondelez International Inc.

Sara Lee Corp. in 2012 split its business into two companies, one a meat-focused operation renamed Hillshire Brands Co., and an international coffee and tea business called D.E. Master Blenders NV.

Hillshire, D.E. Master Blenders and Kraft all later merged with other big food companies.

The largest of Kellogg’s three planned companies would be the global snacks business, which would include brands such as Pringles and Cheez-Its, and breakfast items including Eggo waffles and Pop-Tarts. It also would include Kellogg’s international operations—fast-growing noodle business in Africa and cereal sales overseas.

“The snacking business will have all household names with just the right level of scale,” Mr. Cahillane said. “And when you don’t have the ‘conglomerate effect,’ you can get a lot more done.”

Kellogg said it would use its international cereal supply chain and retailer connections to expand Cheez-Its and other snacks globally. In recent years, Kellogg’s Pringles brand has gained momentum in Europe and Latin America, which executives said paves the way for others in its portfolio.

Snacks have been a driver of Kellogg’s growth and an area of particular interest to Mr. Cahillane since he joined the company almost five years ago. In 2019, he sold off Kellogg’s nearly $1 billion Keebler cookies and fruit snacks business to better focus on Kellogg’s other snack brands, which were already getting more of the company’s marketing and innovation resources. Since then, Mr. Cahillane said, he has been calculating a bigger corporate split.

“The pandemic pressed pause on a lot of things,” Mr. Cahillane said. “The time is right, now.”

Mondelez, the biggest global snack company, for years has added brands through small acquisitions, and on Monday it said it would acquire Clif Bar & Co. for $2.9 billion plus the potential for more tied to earnings targets. That deal could increase competition against Mars Inc.’s KIND bar brand, which Mars bought in 2020, and Kellogg’s smaller RX Bar business, which it acquired in 2017.

Mr. Cahillane said Kellogg would continue to pursue snacking acquisitions following the split.

Other food companies have reshaped their own operations.

General Mills Inc.

took on a substantial pet-food business via acquisitions, and divested less-profitable brands such as Green Giant vegetables and Hamburger Helper.

Campbell Soup Co.

has faced investor questions about whether it would be better off splitting its snack business and soup operation in two, though executives have maintained that they are better off together.

Kellogg’s decision to spin off its North America cereal business, with about $2.4 billion in sales last year, comes as it seeks to reverse sales declines and boost profit margins.

Consumers for years have been moving away from breakfast cereals, and Kellogg’s operations more recently were disrupted by a strike among factory workers and a fire at one plant that knocked out production and cost the company market share.

Kellogg, the second biggest U.S. cereal supplier after General Mills, has regained 4 percentage points of market share this year, Mr. Cahillane said. Still, Kellogg’s North America cereal sales fell 10% in the three months ended April 2 from the prior year, largely because of to supply-chain problems, the company said.

“Frosted Flakes doesn’t have to compete with Pringles for resources,” Mr. Cahillane said. “Economists might say we can do that without splitting. But we don’t live in a textbook, we live in the real world.”

Kellogg’s plant-based foods business, with estimated 2021 net sales of $340 million, as a stand-alone company will first aim to expand in North America and eventually globally, Kellogg said.

Meat alternatives have found traction in grocery stores’ freezer aisles and meat cases, though competition has grown. Kellogg in early 2020 brought out a line of plant-based burgers and tenders called Incogmeato, part of an effort to compete against

Beyond Meat Inc.

and Impossible Foods Inc.

Mr. Cahillane said MorningStar’s Incogmeato can be more aggressive with investments in technology and its supply chain once it no longer is contributing to Kellogg’s bottom line.

Some Wall Street analysts said divvying up Kellogg could hurt each business’s ability to secure competitive prices using the larger conglomerate’s purchasing power.

said that it could cost some 2% of Kellogg’s current total sales for each business to take on their own sales force, distribution system and other previously-shared expenses. Analysts with investment research firm Morningstar Inc. said that Kellogg’s snacks business could thrive on its own, though the benefits for the cereal and plant-based operations were less clear.

Kellogg said the North American cereal and plant-based foods businesses would both remain based in Battle Creek, Mich. The global snacking business would be based in Chicago, Ill., with dual corporate campuses in Battle Creek and Chicago.

Moving the snack company’s headquarters to Chicago will locate it in a city that is home to other food companies as Kellogg looks to hire and expand the business.

said in recent weeks they planned to relocate their Chicago-area headquarters to Arlington, Virginia and Irving, Texas, respectively.

Stocks Pull Back After Last Week’s Rally

U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, poised to end the month on a downbeat note after last week’s rally.

The S&P 500 was down 0.4% in afternoon trading, a day after U.S. markets were closed for Memorial Day. After snapping a seven-week losing streak last week, the benchmark index regained ground and was on track to close the month with a slight gain. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 0.5%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.1%.

Tuesday’s session will cap another volatile trading month, during which stocks around the world swung wildly as traders tried to assess the outlook for global economies. In the U.S., stocks tumbled shortly after May began and continued falling amid a slew of earnings and economic data that came in worse than expected.

intensified worries about the lingering impact of inflation, and spurred investors to dump shares across several industries.

By mid-May, it seemed the S&P 500 was bound to close in a bear market, defined as a drop of 20% or more from a recent high, before a late-month rally sent stocks higher. The S&P 500 is down about 14% from its January high. 

Professional and individual investors alike waded into last week’s rally in the U.S. markets, finding opportunities to scoop up stocks that have seen their valuations fall. However, the issues that sent stocks declining earlier this month have yet to abate.

Many traders remain worried that the Federal Reserve’s plans to raise interest rates aggressively could tip the U.S. economy into a recession. Meanwhile, concerns about an economic slowdown in China and sustained supply-chain disruptions due to the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have continued to weigh on investors’ minds.

“There’s a bit of market uncertainty just about the pretty rapid rally we’ve had, and whether that can be sustained in a world where inflation is clearly still a factor,” said Brooks Macdonald Chief Investment Officer Edward Park.

New survey data released Tuesday showed U.S. consumer confidence declined slightly in May from the previous months.

Crude prices jumped after European Union leaders said they would impose an oil embargo on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but later pared their gains. The sanctions are set to include a ban on insuring ships that carry Russian oil, The Wall Street Journal reported. They would include an exemption for oil delivered from Russia via pipelines, which make up one-third of EU oil purchases from Russia.

Front-month futures for Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose 1% to settle at $122.84 a barrel. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. marker, slipped 0.3% to $114.67 a barrel.

Nine of the S&P 500’s 11 sectors were down on Tuesday. Consumer-discretionary stocks were the best-performing sector, lifted by a 3.8% rise in the shares of online-commerce giant

Amazon.com.

U.S.-traded shares of

Unilever

surged 9.9% after the consumer-goods company said it would add activist investor Nelson Peltz to its board and disclosed his fund now holds a 1.5% stake.

The S&P 500’s energy sector is on track to finish May with the largest gain among the benchmark index’s 11 groups, extending a trend that has flourished for much of 2022. But even some beaten-down stocks are set to end the month in the green, such as

Netflix,

Robinhood Markets

and

Zoom Video Communications.

“When the S&P 500 is [close to entering] a bear market, that has a big psychological impact on those seeking value,” said

Craig Erlam,

senior market analyst at Oanda. “I think the question repeatedly being asked is, ‘Are we seeing a bottom in the markets?’”

In the bond market, the yield on 10-year Treasury notes rose to 2.842% from 2.748% Friday. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.

Bitcoin was trading at about $31,664, according to CoinDesk, rising 1.2% from its price at 5 p.m. ET on Monday.

Overseas, the pan-continental Stoxx Europe 600 fell 0.7%, snapping a four-session winning streak, after eurozone inflation rose faster than expected. Consumer prices rose 8.1% on the year in May—the fastest past since records began in 1997—after climbing at a 7.4% rate in April. The inflation report will likely factor into the European Central Bank’s coming interest-rate decisions. Earlier this month, ECB President

Christine Lagarde

indicated that the central bank could increase its key interest rate in July for the first time in 11 years.

‘Workers don’t want toys or free food, they want a higher quality of life’: The Great Resistance is here — as companies struggle to get workers back to the office

Amy Faust Liggayu, 32, a market-research project manager based in Tinley Park, Ill., mother of a 7-month-old son, never imagined she would have a life where she could spend five days a week with him, while also working full time. But that was before March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced offices across the country to tell their employees to work from home.

She had previously spent $20 a day commuting four days a week, and worked the fifth day from home, but when her manager called employees back full time, a move many other businesses are making now that vaccines are widely available and the worst days of the pandemic appear to have receded, she was not willing to give up all that freedom remote work had given her. 

Those early months of COVID-19 when millions of people worked from home gave them a rare opportunity to reevaluate the role of work in their lives. And in 2022 they have leverage: Unemployment is falling and wages are rising, as companies struggle to attract and retain workers. In fact, there are two job openings for every unemployed American, the highest level on record since 2001.

Amid these efforts, Faust Liggayu counts herself among the Great Resistance. “I’m very outspoken about my desire to never work in an office again,” she said. “The quality of life is so much better when you can cut out that commute or spend your lunch break with your family.” She would often not arrive home until 6:30 p.m. if she left the office at 5 p.m. Those were precious hours lost with her son.

When she received news that all employees were going to be back in the offices, she told MarketWatch that she was frustrated. “They haven’t been listening to me,” she recalls thinking. “They know I don’t want to go back.” So she took a stand. “Job recruiters were reaching out to me on LinkedIn. All the jobs they reached out to me about were working from home.”

The outcome was a win-win for her: She found a new job two months ago that paid more money, while working full-time from home. “I went from making $50,000 a year to $80,000. When I get to stop at 5 p.m., I’m done. I get to spend that time with my son. Time moves quickly. It means so much at this age. It means so much to get those extra two hours a night with him.”

Amid labor shortage, employees flex their muscles

The Great Resignation — regarded by some observers as more of a Great Negotiation for better pay and working conditions — has led to the Great Resistance, a battle of wills between senior management and, well, everyone else. For those who are fortunate enough to have the option to work remotely, which other figures put at 40% of the workforce, they’re not giving up.

“There is definitely a sense of resistance amongst employees against the full-week, all-day, in-person work concept,” said Vanessa Burbano, associate professor of business at Columbia Business School in New York.Remote working enables a degree of flexibility in the day that is practically impossible to recreate in a physical co-working space.”

Faust Liggayu said her breakup with her former employer was respectful and without animosity. She had worked at that previous job from 2017 to March 2022, and it was a small team. But the standoff between some employees and their companies has not always been so free of drama. Apple, for one, has suffered at least one high-profile resignation as a result. 

The Great Resignation has led to the Great Resistance, a battle of wills between senior management and, well, everyone else.

A group, “Apple Together,” signed an open letter to the tech giant, claiming over 3,000 signatures from workers, rejecting a hybrid work model and asking the company to allow them to make their own decisions. “Stop treating us like school kids who need to be told when to be where and what homework to do,” they wrote. (Apple did not respond to a request for comment.)

Thus far, workers have successfully dug their feet into their sofas. Some 64% said they would consider looking for a new job if they were required to return to the office full time, a survey by ADP, a provider of human resources management software and services, found. Younger people (18- to 24-year-olds) are the most reluctant (71%) to return to the workplace full time.

“This shift from the traditional 9-to-5, office-based model cannot be undone and has long-term implications for the jobs market,” the report said. “As companies — and employees — re-evaluate their approach to the workforce, it is clear that having a flexible approach is key, as there are advantages and drawbacks to both exclusively, whether fully remote or fully in office.”

Last month, Airbnb acknowledged that the era of full- or even part-time office working is over, telling workers they could work from home or the office, if they choose, and they can work from anywhere in the U.S. without a change in pay. Starting in September, they can also live and work in over 170 countries for up to 90 days a year in each location.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch

Chris Herd, CEO of Firstbase, which helps companies go remote, said there’s no such thing as a free lunch. “Workers don’t want toys or free food, they want a higher quality of life. people who aren’t in the office all day — has created broken ways of living.”

He said the Great Resignation reflects people’s desperation for better work-life balance and believes that giving ultimatums will lead to “armageddon” inside companies. “Over the last two years, companies have found out people don’t need to be in the office for great work to keep happening,” he said. “Now, companies are pushing back for employees to return to office again.”

Nicholas Bloom, professor in the Department of Economics at Stanford University, said neither hard nor soft nudges will work. His own poll of 3,000 people revealed a “fiendishly hard” task for managers to get people back. “Nobody commutes for one hour for a free bagel or box or to use a ping-pong table,” he said. “They come in to catch up with friends and work in person.”

Indeed, some Silicon Valley companies pulled out all the stops to entice people back and foster a sense of community, he told MarketWatch. “Google got so desperate they hired Lizzo to give a concert, which is great for one day, but unless you are planning on getting Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and then Justin Bieber after that, this is not a permanent solution.”

“The resistance is there when employees do not see the point in coming in,” Bloom said. “If you have to force somebody to come to the office it is not in their interests to come in. To avoid forcing people you need to make it benefit them to come in. That means setting up typically two or three days a week of office time on anchor days when everyone comes in.”

He said it makes more sense to create a hybrid environment where team members show up on the same day rather than enforce a five-day week and fail. “So I see resistance to returning to the office a symptom of over-ambitious return to office plans. Realistic plans centered around anchor days, probably two to start off with, can work well and firms can build on this.”

For those who can work from home, this may be a luxury problem. The Labor Department says only 7.7% of employees teleworked in April. Millions of jobs necessitate in-person interactions. Retail, manufacturing and essential-services workers such as supermarket and hospital staff and public-transport employees put their lives at risk during the pandemic. 

Remote work is a tradeoff for everyone

As managers negotiate with office workers, companies are negotiating with landlords about their office leases. In Manhattan, monthly leasing activity decreased by 11.5% month-over-month to 2.7 million square feet in April, Colliers said. However, companies seem to be betting on some kind of return to office life: Demand more than doubled year over year.

Herd, however, said managers will soon see the advantage of remote work. “E-commerce killed physical stores because people prefer to shop online, it gave them more choice, it was more efficient and costs less,” he said. “E-companies kill office-based companies because workers prefer to work online, it gives them more choice, it is more efficient and costs less.”

It’s obviously not a one-size-fits-all question, even for those who have had the luxury of working from home. “For me, in the mental-health counseling field, I can see both sides,” said Ken Steinbach, a Portland, Ore.,-based counselor. “There is a special connection when we are in the same space together face to face, and I would love to be able to connect that way again.”

“The reality is that most of my clients might not be able to have therapy if they had to block out time to go into an office,” Steinbach told MarketWatch. “Working virtually has made my services much more accessible to a great many people and I can’t see that changing. So yes, I love the idea of being in person, but that may not be the world we live in.”

Peter Gray, professor of commerce at the University of Virginia, said workers miss out on the emotional, social and intellectual stimulation that comes with being around others. For that reason, he favors a hybrid work model. “Employee resistance is to me perfectly natural when people believe that they can be just as effective at home as in the office,” he said.

But spending all that time working from your sofa or kitchen table or — if you’re lucky enough to have one — a home office may be a more expensive tradeoff for employees and management than they anticipate. “What they don’t realize is that their networks will slowly shrink as they spend more time at home, and this can hamper their effectiveness long term,” Gray said.

“Once they realize that some of the rich interactions they used to have in the office have faded, they start to wonder if they might be missing something important,” he added. “And as their broader networks shrink — the ones that expose them to creative new ways of thinking outside of their main work stream — their performance can suffer.”

The resistance appears to be winning

Another obstacle: An empty or half-empty office doesn’t help new employees or interns who rely on those face-to-face interactions for honing their skills and, critically, building a professional network so they can move up the corporate ladder and/or put their name in the hat for a promotion. For every seasoned employee who knows the ropes, there are others who need to be given a helping hand. 

Skeptics also worry that some people may be tempted to take advantage of remote work, spend an hour or two catching up on their favorite TV show, while keeping a casual eye on their work emails, or — worse — take the entire day off and go to the beach, while answering the occasional Slack message from under an umbrella. In fact, eight out of 10 workers have admitted to slacking off. 

Burbano, the Columbia Business School professor, is not surprised by such polls. “Remote work also comes with increased opportunities for worker misconduct, worker shirking and putting in less effort, as my research has shown, which is likely part of the reason that there is a desire amongst employers to bring people back to the physical office.”

Social media is filled with people claiming they will point-blank refuse to commute again. “I’m not going back to the office with these gas prices,” one person recently wrote on Twitter

“The gas people and the commercial real-estate people are just gonna have to fight it out amongst themselves.” Another added bluntly: “Not in the mood to work or be around people.”

Recent research suggests such resistance is winning. The Conference Board, a nonprofit organization, says only 4% of companies are requiring staff to return to work full time and only 45% were requiring them to work five days a week from the office — even if a few days a week appears too much for some Apple employees and workers like Amy Faust Liggayu.

Faust Liggayu doesn’t fully buy the brainstorming-by-the-watercooler argument. “At my previous job, we had a meeting every morning to go over the workload for the day. That meeting would sometimes last an hour because we would just bulls*** about everything. But if you have enough calls where you can be spontaneous and a good team that works together well, you can still have that environment.”

And now? She is much happier at her new fully-remote, better-paid job. “I make a point of remembering what people are up to and ask them about their plans for the weekend to keep that community together,” she said. “I love it. I officially turned one of our extra bedrooms into an office. I get to spend my lunch with my son, feed him when he’s hungry. The flexibility is incredible.”

U.S. Food Supply Is Under Pressure, From Plants to Store Shelves

The U.S. food system is under renewed strain as Covid-19’s Omicron variant stretches workforces from processing plants to grocery stores, leaving gaps on supermarket shelves.

In Arizona, one in 10 processing plant and distribution workers at a major produce company were recently out sick. In Massachusetts, employee illnesses have slowed the flow of fish to supermarkets and restaurants. A grocery chain in the U.S. Southeast had to hire temporary workers after roughly one-third of employees at its distribution centers fell ill.

Food-industry executives and analysts warn that the situation could persist for weeks or months, even as the current wave of Covid-19 infections eases. Recent virus-related absences among workers have added to continuing supply and transportation disruptions, keeping some foods scarce.

Nearly two years ago, Covid-19 lockdowns drove a surge in grocery buying that cleared store shelves of products such as meat, baking ingredients and paper goods.

Now some executives say supply challenges are worse than ever. The lack of workers leaves a broader range of products in short supply, food-industry executives said, with availability sometimes changing daily.

Eddie Quezada, produce manager at a Stop & Shop store in Northport, N.Y., said Omicron has stretched his department more than any previous wave of the pandemic, with one in five of his staff contracting Covid-19 in early January. Deliveries also have taken a hit, he said: Earlier in the month he received only 17 of the 48 cases of strawberries he had ordered.

“There is a domino effect in operations,” Mr. Quezada said.

At a Piggly Wiggly franchisee in Alabama and Georgia, about one-third of pickers needed to organize products and load trucks at the grocery chain’s distribution centers were out sick in the first week of January, said Keith Milligan, its controller. The company has been struggling to get food to stores on time due to driver shortages and staffing issues that haven’t improved, Mr. Milligan said, leaving Piggly Wiggly to change its ordering and stocking plans daily in some cases. Frozen vegetables and canned biscuits are running low, he said.

In-stock levels of food products at U.S. retailers hit 86% for the week ended Jan. 16, according to data from market-research firm IRI. That is lower than last summer and pre-pandemic levels of more than 90%. Sports drinks, frozen cookies and refrigerated dough are especially low, with in-stock levels in the 60% to 70% range. In-stock rates are lower in states such as Alaska and West Virginia, IRI data show.

“We were expecting supply issues to get resolved as we go into this period right now. Omicron has put a bit of a dent on that,”

Vivek Sankaran,

chief executive of Albertsons Cos., said on a Jan. 11 call with analysts. He said the Boise, Idaho-based supermarket giant expects more supply challenges over the next month or so.

Similar challenges at packaged-food and meatpacking plants mean that shortages could linger, industry officials and analysts said. The Agriculture Department showed cattle slaughter and beef production over the week of Jan. 14 were down about 5% from a year earlier, with hog slaughtering down 9%. Chicken processing was about 4% lower over the week ending Jan. 8, the USDA said. Labor shortages are also affecting milk processing and cheese production, according to the agency.

Because it often takes weeks for meat to reach store shelves from the plants, the current Omicron-related labor problems at producers could prolong supply issues, said

executive director of meat research at agricultural lender Rabobank. “This might mean less meat for longer,” she said.

Lamb Weston Holdings Inc.,

the top North American seller of frozen potato products, said in January it expected labor challenges to continue affecting production rates and throughput in its plants, where staffing shortages have already disrupted operations.

Conagra Brands Inc.,

which makes Birds Eye frozen vegetables and Slim Jim meat snacks, said earlier this month that more of its employees have been testing positive for Covid-19 at a time when elevated consumer demand already is outpacing the company’s available supplies.

In Massachusetts, Tom Zaffiro is struggling to move fish to grocery stores and restaurants. Mr. Zaffiro, president of Channel Fish Processing Co., said the company is only able to run at 80% capacity on days when key workers are out, while short-handedness at trucking companies and breading suppliers make it still harder to prepare and transport the company’s fish. Channel has tripled lead times for customers, he said, and those that don’t meet a minimum order aren’t guaranteed supplies at all.

Vegetable suppliers in the West, which provide the bulk of America’s leafy greens during the winter, also face production challenges.

Steve Church, co-chairman at Church Brothers Farms, a California-based produce company, said some 10% of employees at his Arizona vegetable processing plant and distribution facility were out sick on any given day earlier this month. That number dropped last week, and Mr. Church said he still has been able to fill orders, but he worries about the toll the added work is taking on Church’s remaining employees, who are working overtime to keep fresh-cut vegetables and bagged salads moving to grocers and restaurants such as

Walmart Inc.

and

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.

“Those people are tired and they want days off,” said Mr. Church. “It’s a vicious circle.”

Channel Fish Processing is able to run at only 80% capacity on days when key workers are out.

Food companies and supermarket chains’ costs are rising as they struggle to operate with fewer employees. In Northport, Stop & Shop has offered unionized employees overtime pay to cover shifts for sick staff and asked part-time employees to work longer hours, said Mr. Quezada, the produce manager, adding that staffing and deliveries are improving in his department.

Stop & Shop said it is experiencing the impact of the latest increase in Covid-19 cases like other businesses across the country. The company said it doesn’t anticipate disruptions to customers’ shopping experience and that it has plans in place to continue operating.

Midwest-based Angelo Caputo’s Fresh Markets has been running low on frozen breakfast products, canned beans and other items, and has been buying whatever it can get to keep its shelves stocked, said Dan O’Neill, director of center store and perishables at the grocer.

“We are not seeing any kind of relief,” Mr. O’Neill said, adding that the company is trying to secure more inventory from alternative suppliers.

At Channel Fish Processing, labor shortages at trucking companies and breading suppliers have made it even harder to fulfill orders.

Brandon Johnson, president of Korth Transfer, a Wisconsin-based trucking company that hauls goods ranging from vinegar to beer, said the latest wave of Covid-19 cases has hit Korth’s employees nearly as hard as the pandemic’s earliest phase. Mr. Johnson said he has grown accustomed to telling customers he simply doesn’t have drivers left to move their loads.

Mr. Johnson said he spent about 20 days behind the wheel of his own trucks last year, including a 500-mile round-trip journey to ferry a load of soy sauce from its manufacturer to a condiment supplier for use in a teriyaki recipe.

“It makes it easy to say we’re tapped,” Mr. Johnson said, referring to his days spent filling in as a driver. “I can say, ‘I have no more to give. We’ve got everyone we can working for you.’”
