A Disney Flop Is Now Dominating The Streaming Charts

Strange World has skyrocketed to #1 on Disney+

By Mark McKee
| Published

There are no studios in the industry that has more influence in the animation genre than Disney, with their incredible historical contributions like Lion KingAladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. That doesn’t mean that the studio always hits a home run when they release a new big, animated release, as proven by their Thanksgiving-timed drop of Strange World, which ended up landing hard with a loud and devastating thud. A theatrical flop nowadays doesn’t always mean it is a total loss since studios have a long list of available avenues to release the films on streaming, where according to Flix Patrol, the flop is now dominating in the #1 spot on Disney+.

Flix Patrol shows that when the film was dropped on Disney+, which was just in time for Christmas on December 23. Of course, with no surprise, there were five Christmas movies on the top ten list for the week of Christmas, including Home AloneHome Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Santa Clause, but once the holiday buzz wore off on December 26, Strange World hit the number one spot and has been there ever since. The path to the streaming service seems to signal an interesting struggle Disney is having between theatrical releases and streaming exclusives.

With a voice cast of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu, there was definitely enough star power to carry the film to the top of the box office most weekends. In its first weekend over Thanksgiving, it sat firmly at the number two spot behind Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and by the second week, David Harbour’s turn as Kris Kringle in the Christmas action movie Violent Night pushed the kid’s movie to number three. All in all, to this point, Strange World has brought in an anemic $67 million and looks to be a loss of over $100 million for Disney.

Moving the film to Disney+ so soon after the film bombed at the box office looks like a desperate move to find an audience for the film, which points to the company’s inability to read what will do well in the theater and what won’t. Over the Halloween holiday, Disney dropped Hocus Pocus 2 as a streaming exclusive, causing fans to criticize the company for not putting it in the theater, the opposite mistake the next holiday feels like a growing trend. On top of that, some fans believe the company betrayed Strange World and that it was intentionally released a week after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to hide its true intentions to bury the movie.

Content creator Little Saint Sidney (@thederpyhipster) accused Disney on Twitter of trying to sink Strange World with a lack of marketing. The diverse cast and first openly queer lead led to Disney not releasing the movie overseas in markets that censor that material, and with all the buzz here at home only reporting the movie bombing led to a dismal theater showing.

Of course, Strange World isn’t finished as it is now steaming ahead on streaming with the number one spot for a few days running, even while competing with Willow and National Treasure. Time will tell whether the movie will become a cult classic like other Disney underperformers like Atlantis and Treasure Planet or if it will get lost in the pages of obscurity.

A Late Entrant to the ‘Biggest Flop of the Year’ Conversation Gets Dissected

Damien Chazelle’s previous two features rightly saw him lauded as one of the fastest-rising and most talented young filmmakers in the business, but Babylon is already beginning to look like a showcase for what can go wrong when you hand somebody a ton of money and complete creative freedom to do whatever they please.

Contained dramatic thriller Whiplash deservedly won J.K. Simmons an Academy Award and netted Chazelle a nod for Best Original Screenplay, while La La Land went several steps better by scooping six Oscars from 14 nominations, with the dazzling musical making its orchestrator the youngest person in history to win the Best Director trophy at the age of 32.

Babylon, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to stand much of a chance outside the technical categories. Polarizing to a fault, leaving the unfamiliar to wonder whether it’s spectacular of self-indulgent if they haven’t seen it for themselves, critics and crowds have been left split straight down the middle.

That being said, nobody really seemed interested in buying a ticket to see it this weekend, with the film tanking disastrously after an opening weekend of just $3.5 million, even worse than David O. Russell’s already-infamous Amsterdam.

To be fair, it can’t be ruled out just yet that Babylon won’t go on to show strong legs at the box office over the coming weeks, but it’s unlikely. Less than $4 million from three days on the big screen is a nightmare for an $80 million ode to excess packed to the rafters with talent, and it could yet wind up as the single biggest flop of 2022 despite a December 23 bow.

The Way Of Water’ Was A Box Office Flop As She Thought It Was Released Years Ago – Deadline

Edie Falco is one of the stars of Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel to James Cameron’s epic. The Sopranos alum filmed the movie several years ago she had thought it had been released and flopped at the box office after not hearing much buzz.

During an appearance on The View on Friday, December 16, Falco recounted she had come to terms with the thought that Avatar hadn’t done well until someone told her it had not been released yet.

“I saw the first one when it was out, and that’s going back some time. And the second Avatar, the one that’s coming out, I shot I think four years ago,” she said on the ABC talk show. “And then I’ve been busy doing stuff and somebody mentioned Avatar and I thought, ‘Oh, I guess it came out and didn’t do very well.’ Because I hadn’t heard anything. I thought, ‘Oh, well it happens!’”

Falco continued, “And then someone recently said, ‘Oh, Avatar is coming out!’ I said, ‘It hasn’t come out yet?!’”

Cameron’s long-awaited sequel recently opened worldwide in the theatres grossing $441.6M at the box office. In the U.S., Avatar: The Way of Water was able to open to $134M, below the initial projections that had it opening between $150M-$175M.

Watch the interview in the video posted below.

Cameron had already hinted that if Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t perform well at the box office, he would wrap the film series by the third film.

“The market could be telling us we’re done in three months, or we might be semi-done, meaning: ‘OK, let’s complete the story within movie three, and not go on endlessly’, if it’s just not profitable,” he told Total Film in an interview.

The director planned on making the Avatar series in five films.
