Official Galaxy Z Flip 3 Android 13 One UI 5 update is now available

Samsung’s been releasing the Android 13 and One UI 5.0 update for more and more devices pretty much every other day. Today, the big update has arrived for the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The Z Flip 3’s first stable Android 13 release comes with firmware version F711BXXU3DVK3 and its rollout has started in India, and we have our fingers crossed the rollout will expand to cover more markets over the next few days.

Samsung’s foldables have not received the Android 13/One UI 5.0 upgrade at the same pace as the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lineups, but it’s good to see the company is beginning to change that. The Galaxy Z Flip 3’s One UI 5.0 update comes on the heels of the update for the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This leaves the Z Fold 2 as the only eligible Samsung foldable to not have been updated, but again, fingers crossed that doesn’t remain the case for too long.

As far as new features are concerned, our YouTube videos that you can check out below will give you a good idea of what to expect. There’s plenty new in One UI 5.0, although there’s not a lot — or anything at all — in the way of features specifically designed for the Galaxy Z Flip line, for those wondering.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 Android 13 and One UI 5.0 update comes bundled with the November 2022 security patch, and you can download it over the air from the phone’s Settings » Software update menu. The complete firmware is also available in our archives for those who aren’t fond of waiting and are okay with using their PC to upgrade their Galaxy Z Flip 3 (if you take this route, be sure to download the firmware for your specific model and country to avoid any issues).

Samsung launches Galaxy Z Flip 4 Maison Margiela Edition with unique accessories

After teasing its collaboration with fashion firm Maison Margiela a couple of weeks ago, Samsung has launched the Galaxy Z Flip 4 Maison Margiela Edition. The limited-edition version of the smartphone comes with a unique design and matching accessories.

Samsung says that its new limited-edition version of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a design ethos that “marries perfectly with Maison Margiela’s design philosophy, rooted in defiance, subversion, and rejection of convention.” Every aspect of the phone has been designed to match Margiela’s originality and values. The phone comes in matte white, featuring a silver-white metal frame. There are a few elements in grey and translucent lines that signify the phone’s internal circuits.

The phone comes with two unique cases: Leather Case and Ring Case. The Leather Case reflects the fashion house’s iconic bianchetto technique, which features the beauty of a white canvas and the “four stitches” emblem that signifies anonymity. The case has a unique painted texture that can change over time. The Ring Case uses Maison Margiela’s emblematic numeric coding as a ring.

Samsung has also created a custom UI theme for the phone, featuring a wallpaper that creates a see-through look and new icons. Even the phone’s box packaging is quite different, revealing the shape of the phone.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 Maison Margiela Edition will be available in China (Hong Kong), France, and South Korea, starting from December 1, 2022. The company hasn’t revealed its price or if the device will be made available in other markets in the future.

Final rankings: The seven Senate seats most likely to flip

Voters head to the polls in a matter of days and only one thing is for certain: The battle for the Senate is anyone’s ballgame as both sides look to sprint through the finish line with the majority at stake.

The political winds are firmly at the backs of Republicans, but Democrats are continuing to count on a number of incumbent senators, buoyed by big money fundraising operations, to keep hold of the upper chamber.

The late stages of the race have also brought some high-wattage politicos out to play as commanders in chief, past and present, are appearing in states across the board with the hope of driving voters to the ballot box.

After a hectic week of campaigning and for the final time this season, here’s a look at the seven Senate seats most likely to flip next week:

Nevada

(AP Photo)

If Republicans are going to retake the Senate, a key first step would be to deny Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) in her reelection bid against former state Attorney General Adam Laxalt (R).

For months, the fight for the Battle Born State has been close, and that hasn’t changed. But some surveys in the past week have shown Laxalt opening up an advantage over the incumbent Democrat, headlined by an Emerson College-The Hill poll showing the Republican up by 5 percentage points.

Those numbers have Republicans feeling perhaps more confident about Nevada than any other battleground.

Nevertheless, Democrats still believe a Cortez Masto win is well within reach.

“It’s going to be really close. Really, really tight. I think there’s some reason for optimism in early voting numbers,” said one Democratic operative with Nevada ties, noting this is the first midterm contest where universal mail-in voting has been employed in the state.

“The steady drumbeat of grassroots events [and] surrogates coming into Nevada have helped draw a lot of interest,” the operative continued, referring to former President Obama’s visit to Las Vegas on Tuesday. “There’s still cautious optimism that we can grind out a win. … This race is nowhere near done.”

A win for Laxalt would likely mean a big night for the GOP in the state, as Republican gubernatorial nominee Joe Lombardo is running close polling-wise in his push to unseat Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak (D).

Pennsylvania

Republican Mehmet Oz has closed the gap between him and Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D), but the contest remains a close call as the hourglass winds down on election season.

The situation has changed completely for Fetterman in recent months. After leading or being tied in survey after survey dating back to the May primary, multiple recent polls now show him behind his Republican challenger. Accordingly, the RealClearPolitics average of polls for the first time on Thursday has the former television doctor ahead.

The latest developments come a little more than a week after the campaign’s lone debate proved difficult for Fetterman, who struggled to string together words and sentences due to an auditory processing issue caused by the stroke he suffered in May.

But political prognosticators caution that this is still anyone’s race.

“It’s close. There’s overwhelming evidence it’s quite close. Anybody who’s telling you they can clearly see this has broken one way or another, they’re probably exaggerating. … A lot of currents are pushing up against one another,” said Chris Borick, a political science professor at Muhlenberg College.

The nip-tuck nature of the race has brought heavyweights on both sides to the state in the final days. Oz campaigned alongside former President Trump in Latrobe, Pa., on Saturday, while President Biden and Obama stumped for Fetterman in Philadelphia (in addition to an Obama appearance in Pittsburgh).

While Republicans feel good about Oz’s chances, the governor’s race — featuring state Attorney General Josh Shapiro (D) and state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R) — could threaten the GOP nominee’s chances. Shapiro is the heavy favorite, and if his margin of victory over Mastriano reaches double digits, that could spell trouble for Oz.

“He’s been a terrible candidate,” said Rob Gleason, the former chairman of the Republican Party of Pennsylvania, about Mastriano. “He can’t raise any money. If he gets 40 percent, that’s a victory for Trump.”

Georgia

Sen. Raphael Warnock, D-Ga., left, and Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker (AP Photo)

The nation’s preeminent toss-up contest on the 2022 map is doing exactly what everyone thought it would: giving both sides agita, especially over the possibility that a winner in the race — and of overall Senate control — might not be ultimately known until early December.

The race between Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) and Republican Herschel Walker is airtight with days to go. According to the latest RealClearPolitics average of surveys, Walker leads by less than half a percentage point over Warnock.

However, operatives on both sides of the aisle are expecting that Tuesday will not be the final word on the matter, with a runoff slated for Dec. 6 the most likely scenario. If that takes place, all bets are off.

“A whole new ballgame,” one GOP operative involved in Senate races told The Hill. “Where the Senate majority sits at the time is another factor. Really hard to predict with any real certainty what the shape of that runoff might look like.”

Another complicating factor for Republicans is that Gov. Brian Kemp (R) is likely to win handily over Democrat Stacey Abrams on Tuesday, providing needed coattails for Walker in the Atlanta suburbs. In a runoff, though, Kemp wouldn’t be on the ballot, making things thornier for the former University of Georgia star running back.

However, national Democrats are indicating that the race continues to give them headaches.

“The state where we’re going downhill is Georgia,” Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) told President Biden on the tarmac in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 27. “It’s hard to believe that they will go for Herschel Walker.”

New Hampshire

(AP Photo)

If there’s a Republican wave on Tuesday and the party secures Democratic-held seats beyond those in Nevada and Georgia, look for New Hampshire to be next in line.

Republicans have played footsie with the Granite State in recent months as they have wondered whether Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) could be defeated without what the party considered a top-tier recruit in the race, having missed out on convincing Gov. Chris Sununu (R) to launch a bid.

But Republican Don Bolduc has narrowed the gap against her.

The Senate Leadership Fund, a group run by allies of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), spent $16 million in the state from early September until Oct. 24, when the group canceled nearly $6 million in ads and redirected it to Pennsylvania. This left the Senate GOP campaign arm and others to fill part of the gap.

In short, Republicans view Pennsylvania (along with Georgia and Nevada) as crucial, while New Hampshire would be the cherry on the sundae. For Democrats, it’s a must-win, but one in which they remain confident.

“Everything points to a close outcome, but Hassan has always been leading this race, and she’ll win on Tuesday. Granite Staters take their elections seriously and as Gov. Sununu said, Don Bolduc is ‘conspiracy theorist’ who simply can’t pull together a winning coalition,” one Democratic operative involved in Senate races said.

“If I’m wrong, we’re in for a long night and a tough two years,” the operative added.

According to the latest Emerson College survey, Hassan leads Bolduc by 4 percentage points. Crucially, she also leads with independent voters, taking 50 percent to only 40 percent for the GOP nominee.

Arizona

(AP Photo)

For months, the question about the Arizona Senate race centered on how big a victory Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) was going to score over Republican Blake Masters.

Now it’s whether Kelly will simply win at all.

The change came after a late and hard charge by Masters and national Republicans that has put him within striking distance of defeating Kelly, who is still considered the best Democratic incumbent on the Senate map this cycle.

Masters has seen a number of things move in his direction over the past month. Most notably, the national environment and economic state of the country is buoying Republicans everywhere, and he is chief among them. In addition to Arizona being one of the top swing states on the map, meaning GOP voters were likely to start coming home closer to Election Day, Masters is also the main beneficiary of Republican Kari Lake’s surge in the governor’s race against state Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D).

What matters for Masters and Republicans is the margin of Lake’s potential victory. If it’s narrow, advantage Kelly. But if it’s sizable, look out.

“If Kari Lake wins by 4 [percentage points], then it’s really hard for Masters not to win. But I’m not sure what she actually wins by,” one GOP operative said.

Adding to the Masters momentum, Libertarian candidate Marc Victor dropped out early in the week and endorsed the GOP nominee, giving him a potential added boost. However, more than 1.3 million voters have returned their ballots as of Friday afternoon, limiting the potential impact of the maneuver.

Wisconsin

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., left, and Democratic Senate candidate and challenger Mandela Barnes (AP Photo/Morry Gash)

Six years ago, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) secured reelection by coming from behind in the final week of the race to nab what was considered an improbable victory.

The situation has changed drastically for the GOP this time around, however. Dating back to mid-September, the two-term incumbent Republican has led Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) or been tied in every single poll, allowing the party to breathe a little easier. The advantage is improbable to some in the party.

“I would have laughed,” one Wisconsin-based GOP operative said. “Wisconsin’s always been a toss-up state. It’s always been close. Democrats set their sights on taking out Ron Johnson early in the cycle. … They emptied the tank and they went incredibly hard at him.”

Still, Wisconsin remains seen as a battleground.

According to the latest RealClearPolitics average, Johnson leads Barnes by a 3.2-percentage point margin. Despite the polling lead, political pundits in the state are still expecting a tight race, just as most races have been in the Badger State dating back to that 2016 victory, which also saw Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.

“This is purely a toss-up race at this point,” said Charles Franklin, the director of the Marquette Law School poll, which showed Johnson with a 2-percentage point lead — having led by 6 percentage points in the school’s survey in early October. “If there was a little bit of a widening of the gap last time, there’s now a tightening of the gap.”

Ohio

Ohio Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, left, and Republican candidate J.D. Vance (AP Photo/Paul Vernon)

Easily, the least likely of these seven seats to switch hands is in the Buckeye State, where Republican J.D. Vance holds a steady lead over Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), who is making a last-minute play for moderate GOP voters and independents to give him a shot on Tuesday.

According to the latest Emerson College survey, Vance leads Ryan by 8 percentage points (51 percent to 43 percent), with that gap having grown since October when Vance led by a single point (46 percent to 45 percent). The winner will replace Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who is retiring after two terms in office.

Vance has expanded his lead for a number of reasons, headlined by the national environment that’s trending Republican and the darkening red hue Ohio has taken on over the past six years since Trump’s 2016 victory. Simply, Ohio is not the swing state it was as recently as 2012 when Obama carried the state.

However, the impact of the Ohio race will likely be felt in other parts of the map. By the end of June, Vance had only $600,000 in cash on hand and he has, in total, only posted $6.9 million — a light amount for a Senate candidate, especially compared to the $44 million brought in by Ryan. That forced Senate Leadership Fund to engage in the race to the tune of $32 million to ensure he would be financially competitive, effectively taking away money that could have been potentially spent in Arizona or New Hampshire.

Samsung offering Galaxy Z Flip 4 free upgrade and $100 instant discount

Last updated: October 8th, 2022 at 17:57 UTC+02:00

Samsung really wants customers to buy its products directly from its online store. That’s one of the main reasons why we see some of the best deals on its products on the store. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is one of the best Samsung phones on the market right now and Samsung wants to make it easier for you to buy one.

The company has refreshed its Galaxy Z Flip 4 offer. It’s now providing customers with a free memory upgrade in addition to an instant $100 discount.

Samsung has some of the best deals on its phones

The base Galaxy Z Flip 4 model costs $999 and comes with 128GB of internal storage. Since the device doesn’t have a microSD card slot, it’s always great to have additional onboard storage, since 128GB is certainly a bit low for this day and age.

Samsung is offering a free memory upgrade so you can now buy the 128GB model but get the 256GB variant instead. The $100 instant discount on the offer means that your final purchase price is just $899. That’s a pretty impressive deal and provides excellent value for money.

This discount doesn’t require a device to be traded in. If you would like to send in your current device, Samsung is offering enhanced trade-in values of up to $700. This will help you bring the cost of your new foldable smartphone down considerably.

All customers also receive four free months of YouTube Premium, four free months of SiriusXM streaming, 3 months of Spotify Premium for free in addition to 6 months of 100GB OneDrive cloud storage.

If you’re enticed to pick one up, just head over to Samsung.com and buy the Galaxy Z Flip 4 before this deal ends.

Watch how the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 survives a brutal teardown

Last updated: September 24th, 2022 at 12:10 UTC+02:00

People have this idea of foldable smartphones being delicate and certainly not as durable as conventional devices. This is an idea that Samsung has been working very hard to dismiss. It has considerably improved the durability of its foldable smartphones over the past couple of years.

There’s no bigger testament to that than the Galaxy Z Flip 4. A new teardown video shows just how much the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can go through and yet still remain fully functional. Hats off to Samsung’s engineering prowess.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 can sure take a beating

YouTuber JerryRigEverything is highly regarded for his durability tests and teardown videos. He’s done the latter on his Galaxy Z Flip 4 that has previously passed the durability test with flying colors.

The actual teardown process goes as you’d imagine. Peeling the display off requires the use of a heat gun. This is also where we find that the foldable panel retains an under-display metal backing even though this has been removed on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Some metal slats and an additional sheet is also used to reinforce the screen around the hinge.

Removing the back panels also requires the application of some heat after which the rest of the process is fairly standard. There are a few ribbons to unclip and screws to open. All of the components are then freed from their respective positions. You won’t see any thermal paste or vapor chambers for cooling the internal components. Samsung is relying on graphite pads for that purpose.

Once inside, we can see the improved hinge mechanism that Samsung has introduced with this device. Instead of gears, the new hinge uses machined channels to make it possible to fold the device. It all looks very well engineered and what’s impressive is that when the entire process is reversed, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes back to life, even though it may seem impossible.

We’ll certainly see Samsung’s foldable phones go from strength to strength in the durability department for future iterations. It goes to show that there’s no need to baby Samsung’s foldables. They’re built to last.

Everyone’s asking me about the Galaxy Z Flip 4, and I can’t stop singing its praises

I’ve been using the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the latest in Samsung’s foldable flip phone series, for around two weeks as I write this. I wasn’t going to review the device as I wouldn’t get a unit on time here in India, but Samsung was still kind enough to send me one to try it out, and man, am I glad it did, because this phone is nearly perfect for a foldable series that’s only been on the market for three years.

I’ve prefered the Galaxy Z Flip line over the Galaxy Z Fold series since day one as I prefer a regular phone that folds instead of a phone that turns into a tablet. But it has limitations that have kept me from spending money on one (despite the surprisingly attractive price tag) and using any of our Galaxy Z Flip review units for more than a few weeks.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is just too damn good

The lack of a zoom camera is one of those limitations, and the other has been the considerably small battery and slow charging that we found on the first two Galaxy Z Flip models (or three models, if we count the Z Flip 5G separately). Well, the Z Flip 4 doesn’t have a zoom camera, either, but Samsung has thankfully addressed both battery life and battery charging speed, making it nearly perfect.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 pretty much has it all you expect from a Samsung flagship, including surprisingly great battery life despite a battery capacity that’s still not all that high (I assume a major contribution here is from the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor). And the Z Flip 4 has got more and more folks interested in the lineup, including my boss Danny, who’s been team Galaxy Fold since the beginning.

In fact, I also got asked about it by my colleague and SamMobile co-founder Daniel, and I just couldn’t stop singing its praises. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is really special, and it’s the first Samsung foldable that I’ve started recommending to anyone who asks if it’s worth it. Again, it’s not a phone for anyone who wants a full-featured flagship camera experience, but for anyone else, it’s excellent.

I do understand that there are still some things that need work. The plastic foldable screen continues to be a liability waiting to happen, but bendable glass for phones is still mostly a pipe dream so the plastic screen is something we will have to make do with for a few more years. Samsung also needs to work on making the crease on its foldable displays less prominent. I think the Z Flip 4’s crease is less prominent than the Z Flip 3’s, but that might just be a placebo effect as I don’t have a Z Flip 3 to compare them side by side.

All that said, if you want to know if you should get a Galaxy Z Flip 4, I’d say the answer is yes as long as you’re okay with not having a zoom camera on the rear. You could wait until next year to see what further improvements Samsung makes to the Galaxy Z Flip series, but if waiting isn’t your thing, just go out and buy this phone.

And if foldables aren’t your thing and you’re shopping in a similar price segment, there’s always the Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22+ to fall back on, although I’d recommend only buying the Snapdragon variant. Or rather, have a little patience and wait to see what the Galaxy S23 series will bring to the table next year. We’re merely 4-5 months away from the Galaxy S23’s launch and you wouldn’t want to have buyer’s remorse just a few months later by opting for the S22 or S22+ right now (unless you get an excellent discount).

Test shows Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, Z Fold 4 lasting longer than Galaxy S22 Ultra

One of the biggest complaints about Samsung’s foldable smartphones has been their battery life and charging speeds. Samsung has addressed those issues with the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with a bigger battery (3,700mAh) and faster charging (25W), while both devices benefit from the more power-efficient Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor.

A new video from YouTuber TechDroider shows putting the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 (4,400mAh) through a battery life test. These phones are pitted against Samsung’s own Galaxy S22 Ultra (5,000mAh), the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max (4,352mAh), the OnePlus 10 Pro (5,000mAh), and the Xiaomi 12S Ultra (4,860mAh). Surprisingly, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold 4 outdo the Galaxy S22 Ultra despite a lower battery capacity.

Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Z Fold 4 battery life results

In a test that takes the phones through gaming, web browsing, and social media apps, the Galaxy S22 Ultra was the first phone to die. It lasted 8 hours and 56 minutes on a single charge, and its temperature was around 50.4°C. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 lasted 9 hours and 4 minutes, and its temperature was 42°C. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 managed to last 9 hours and 18 minutes on a single charge. Its temperature was around 39.7°C.

Both new foldable phones managed to last longer and run cooler than the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This shows how power-efficient the new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset is compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. TSMC’s 4nm process seems much better than Samsung Foundry’s 4nm process.

The OnePlus 10 Pro lasted just one minute longer than the Galaxy Z Fold 4 but ran hotter (45°C). The Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which uses the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, lasted 9 hours and 38 minutes on a single charge but was almost as hot (44.1°C) as the OnePlus 10 Pro. The iPhone 13 Pro Max had the best battery life with a runtime of 10 hours and 35 minutes but ran slightly hotter (40.5°C) than the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: Better Cameras, Battery Life and Software Features

What’s happening

Samsung just announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4, the newest iteration of its foldable flip phone.

Why it matters

Foldable phones have been widely available for about three years, but they still make up just a fraction of the smartphone market. The Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 are Samsung’s attempt to change that.

What’s next

Samsung will release the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on Aug. 26, starting at $1,000.

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Flip 4 on Wednesday during its Unpacked event as part of its latest effort to popularize foldable phones. The Z Flip 4 has new software that takes advantage of its foldable design, improved cameras with better low-light photography and a bigger battery. It goes on sale on Aug. 26 and starts at $1,000 (£999, AU$1,499).

The Galaxy Z Flip has proven to be the most popular foldable yet according to market research estimates. But across the industry, high prices, subpar cameras and battery life compared to standard phones and a lack of compelling features have hindered the general appeal of foldables. With the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Samsung is addressing some — but not all — of those concerns. More importantly, it’s also making progress in understanding the audience for foldable devices like the Z Flip.

Samsung is trying to prove there’s more to the Z Flip 4’s appeal beyond its compactness. That’s why it’s leaning into Flex Mode — the feature that splits apps between the top and bottom portions of the screen when folded halfway. Now, you’ll be able to use the bottom half of the screen as a trackpad for navigating the top portion of the screen — an update that should make it easier to manipulate apps in Flex Mode.

Galaxy Z Flip 4: Samsung’s Flip Phone Gets New Software,…

This feature is new to both the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4, although Samsung said it would evaluate bringing it to older foldables as well. In the short time that I spent with the Z Flip 4, this seemed to work pretty easily after toggling the feature on in the settings menu.

The Z Flip 4’s cover screen is also getting a few new additions. You’ll be able to send quick replies to text messages, make phone calls and take portrait mode photos from the outer display.

Taken together, these upgrades are a step in the right direction for the Z Flip 4. It’s unclear whether the expansion of Flex Mode and the cover display’s extra functionality are going to be enough to convert those who aren’t already interested in foldable phones. But it shows that Samsung is paying closer attention to the software in addition to the hardware, which is crucial for proving the promise behind foldable phones.

Otherwise, the Z Flip 4 is getting a handful of routine updates you’d expect to see in any new smartphone — foldable or not. It’ll run on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a slightly upgraded version of the chip that powers the Galaxy S22 lineup. Although the main camera resolution is the same as it was in the Z Flip 3 (12-megapixel wide and ultrawide lenses), the Z Flip 4 inherits the Galaxy S22’s improved nighttime photography. That means it will have a brighter wide lens and larger pixel size in addition to support for portrait mode photos in the dark. The Z Flip 4’s battery size is also getting an increase to 3,700-mAh capacity compared to its predecessor’s 3,300-mAh battery.

These are all welcome changes that cut down on the compromises you have to make when choosing between the Z Flip and Samsung’s non-folding Galaxy S phones. The previous Z Flip 3’s battery life was underwhelming, and the camera system felt like the “equivalent of the cameras you’d find on a $700 phone,” as my colleague Patrick Holland put it.

The Z Flip’s design hasn’t changed all that much, aside from some refinements. The hinge is slightly smaller and now has a glossier finish than the Z Flip 3. The Z Flip 4’s interior display is 45% more durable while the exterior is coated in Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus Plus. Color options include the new bora purple, which Samsung just introduced for the Galaxy S22 along with pink gold, blue and graphite. These differences aren’t immediately noticeable when you pick up the device, but you can see them when looking at the Z Flip 3 and Z Flip 4 side-by-side.

The Z Flip 4’s $1,000 price is still likely too high for many people, especially since there are so many compelling standard phones on the market that cost hundreds of dollars less. With a few new software improvements and routine upgrades to the camera, processor and battery, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 doesn’t seem like a monumental upgrade.

But it still represents a turning point for Samsung’s foldables. Samsung has moved past simply making apps work smoothly across bendable screens. It’s finally trying to find new ways to interact with apps that you wouldn’t be able to get with a non-folding phone.
