USWNT vs. Haiti score: Alex Morgan’s first-half brace secures 3-0 win in Concacaf W Championship opener

The United States women’s national team kicked off the 2022 Concacaf W Championship in style with a 3-0 victory over Haiti in the opening game of the tournament in Monterrey, Mexico.

The U.S. staved off a couple of chances from Haiti, including a penalty-kick miss that ricocheted off the post, but a first-half brace from Alex Morgan and a late goal by Midge Purce in the 84th minute was enough to secure three points for the Americans on their road to World Cup and Olympic qualification.

Morgan was the star of the show as she scored on a flick off a Mallory Pugh cross in the 16th minute to get things going. She followed that up by heading home a cross from Kelley O’Hara in the 23rd minute.

The San Diego Wave star also hit the woodwork on a header in the 11th minute to apply the pressure on the Haitians in the early going. Morgan has 21 goals in her 21 appearances in qualifiers, including at least one goal in five straight qualifiers.

Check out some more highlights and takeaways from the game:

Haiti had strong chances

This team has several players on the current roster who were part of the 2018 U-20 women’s World Cup team, and the familiarity among the squad is an added benefit for them as they go up against teams in the Concacaf region.

The team had an outstanding chance in the seventh minute with a free-kick opportunity by Kethna Louis that just narrowly missed the far post.

Dumornay had a clear chance in the 37th minute as she beat several U.S. defenders with only Murphy to beat inside the box, but was unable to finish.

VAR makes debut at Concacf W Championship

Video Assistant Referee made its debut at the Concacaf W Championship with several moments where it was put use. By the end of the match, the USWNT saw two goals called back, a potential penalty ruled out due to an offside position, and a red card issued to Haiti rescinded

Shortly ahead of halftime, Roselord Borgella collided with O’Hara and made full contact with studs at a high angle on a 50/50 ball — and was issued a red card — only for the play to be reviewed and the red rescinded and yellow issued instead.

Take a look at the moment here:

The USWNT ultimately scored a third goal, as Mewis delivered service into the box, and a failed clearance allowed Purce to connect on goal inside the box late in the game.

Up next

The United States will square off against Jamaica on Thursday in the second of three group stage games. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET on Paramount+, with studio coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET. Megan Rapinoe, who made an appearance as a second-half sub in this game, will be forced to miss the match as she will be honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. The Americans last played Jamaica in June of 2021 in a 4-0 friendly win. A win here could put the USWNT in prime position to advance to the semifinals, which would secure qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Lisa Byington and Aly Wagner will serve as match commentators with Jenny Chiu as the sideline reporter. Host Poppy Miller, along with U.S. Hall of Fame goalkeeper Briana Scurry, former Canada national team player Kaylyn Kyle and UNLV women’s soccer coach Jenny Ruiz-Williams will serve as studio analysts throughout the competition.

S&P 500 closes the book on its steepest first-half slide since 1970

  • U.S. May consumer spending rises moderately; inflation stays hot
  • Nasdaq notches biggest-ever Jan-June percentage drop
  • Indexes down: Dow 0.82%, S&P 0.88%, Nasdaq 1.33%

NEW YORK, June 30 (Reuters) – Wall Street ended lower on Thursday, crossing the finish line of a grim month and quarter, a dismal coda to the S&P 500’s worst first half in more than half a century.

All three major U.S. stock indexes finished the month and the second quarter in negative territory, with the S&P 500 notching its steepest first-half percentage drop since 1970.

The Nasdaq had its largest-ever January-June percentage drop, while the Dow suffered its biggest first-half percentage plunge since 1962.

All three indexes posted their second straight quarterly declines. The last time that happened was in 2015 for the S&P and the Dow, and 2016 for the Nasdaq.

The year began with spiking cases of COVID-19 due to the Omicron variant. Then came Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, decades-high inflation and aggressive interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve, which have stoked fears of a possible recession. read more

“All year it’s been a tug-of-war between inflation and slowing growth, balancing tightening financial conditions to address inflation concerns but trying to avoid outright panic,” said Paul Kim, chief executive officer at Simplify ETFs in New York. “I think we are more than likely already in a recession and right now the only question is how harsh will the recession be?”

“I think it’s very unlikely that we’ll see a soft landing,” Kim added.

Economic data released on Thursday did little to allay those fears. Disposable income inched lower, consumer spending decelerated, inflation remained hot and jobless claims inched higher. read more

“We’ve started to see a slowdown in consumer spending,” Said Oliver Pursche, senior vice president at Wealthspire Advisors, in New York. “And it seems that inflation is taking its toll on the average consumer and that translates to corporate earnings which is what ultimately drives the stock market.”

The graphic below shows year-on-year growth of core inflation indicators, all of which suggest that while a peak appears to have been reached in March, they all continue to soar well above the Fed’s average annual 2% target:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) fell 253.88 points, or 0.82%, to 30,775.43, the S&P 500 (.SPX) lost 33.45 points, or 0.88%, to 3,785.38 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) dropped 149.16 points, or 1.33%, to 11,028.74.

Eight of the 11 major S&P sectors ended down, with utilities (.SPLRCU) leading the gainers and energy (.SPNY) notching the largest percentage drop.

But energy was to only major sector to post a year-to-date gain, aided by crude prices spiking over supply concerns due to Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The major stock indexes lost ground in June, with the S&P 500 logging its largest June percentage decline since the financial crisis.

Second-quarter reporting season begins in several weeks, and 130 of the companies in the S&P 500 have pre-announced. Of those, 45 have been positive and 77 have been negative, resulting in a negative/positive ratio of 1.7 stronger than the first quarter but weaker than a year ago, according to Refinitiv data.

Worries over inflation dampening consumer demand and threatening profit margins will have market participants listening closely to forward guidance.

Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc (WBA.O) fell 7.3% as its quarterly profit plunged 76%, hurt by its opioid settlement with Florida and a decrease in U.S. pharmacy sales on waning demand for COVID-19 vaccinations. read more

Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the NYSE by a 1.75-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.52-to-1 ratio favored decliners.

The S&P 500 posted one new 52-week high and 42 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 17 new highs and 367 new lows.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 12.58 billion shares, compared with the 12.86 billion average over the last 20 trading days.

Warriors vs. Mavericks: Damion Lee, Davis Bertans hit with technical fouls after bizarre first-half incident

Getty Images

Game 2 of the Western Conference finals between the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks on Friday night reached a boiling point during the second quarter after a bizarre incident involving Damion Lee and Davis Bertans.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the second quarter, Spencer Dinwiddie swung the ball to Bertans in the corner, and the big man launched a quick-fire 3-pointer. Despite a strong contest from Lee that probably should have been called a foul, Bertans got the shot to go, and was knocked down in the process.

Because no foul was called, Bertans tried to get to his feet right away so he could run back on defense. As he began to stand up, Lee tried to jump over him a la Allen Iverson over Ty Lue in the 2001 Finals. The result was a bizarre collision that saw Lee dumped straight on his back.

Tempers understandably flared in the immediate aftermath, and players from both teams had words with each other. That the incident happened right in front of the Mavericks’ bench didn’t help. In the end, though, everyone kept their head and there was no further problems. The Warriors wound up winning 126-117 in a thrilling come-from-behind effort after trailing by 19.

Still, the referees went to the monitor and after a brief review assessed double technicals — one each for Lee and Bertans. Neither of them really deserved a tech, as it was just incidental contact that looked a lot worse than it actually was, but you can understand the refs trying to settle the game down.
