New Orleans Saints’ Marcus Maye arrested, accused of aggravated assault with firearm

METAIRIE, La. — New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Maye was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm stemming from an alleged road rage incident that occurred in Metairie on Monday, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

He has been released from custody after posting a $30,000 bond but was not present in the open portion of Saints practice on Thursday.

Maye’s attorney, Eric Hessler, denied the allegations in a statement obtained by NFL Network on Thursday.

“Marcus vehemently denies the allegation from a motor vehicle incident, and looks forward to defending himself when all the facts come out,” the statement said.

According to a news release from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, “Maye was identified as the driver of a black SUV that was involved in an incident in which he is accused of pointing a firearm at another vehicle that was occupied by several juvenile females.”

“We were made aware of it this morning and we’re still gathering all the information, so we’re not going to have a comment on it at this time until we get more information,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said after practice on Thursday.

Maye is already facing potential discipline from the NFL regarding an arrest on Feb. 22, 2021, when he was with the New York Jets, on charges of driving under the influence and misdemeanor charges of DUI/damage to property and person and leaving the scene of a crash and careless driving. His court date on Aug. 24 was continued until 9 a.m. ET on Nov. 16.

Maye, a sixth-year veteran who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Jets, was signed by the Saints to a three-year, $28.5 million contract in March as part of an overhaul in the secondary.

Maye and Tyrann Mathieu were both signed to replace Marcus Williams and Malcolm Jenkins.

Don’t Buy The New GTA Online Precision Rifle, It Sucks

Image: Rockstar Games / Kotaku

Earlier this week, Rockstar Games released the latest, big update for Grand Theft Auto Online, its super popular open-world MMO. The new update brought some much-needed changes and features to the nearly decade-old game. It also added a new semi-auto rifle to the digital streets of Los Santos that cost nearly half a million dollars and… it completely sucks. It’s so bad, that many are confused as to why it was even added.

The free Criminal Enterprises update for GTA Online launched on July 26 and it brought with it a lot of improvements and new features to the game, many of which had been requested by fans for years. The update includes stuff like the ability to do sell missions in a private session and the ability to finally run around the casino or inside nightclubs. It also added new track creator features and simplified eating snacks and using armor. All and all, not a super flashy or sexy update, but a smart one that will help keep the aging game playable and fun.

The update also added a new weapon that just really sucks.

The Precision Rifle is, in theory, supposed to be a semi-auto sniper rifle that is highly precise and can be used in mid-range to long-range gunfights. And for an eye-watering high price of $450,000 (without discounts) a lot of players might expect some decent bang for their buck. I know I did when I picked up the gun the moment I logged in after the update was live. What I and other players actually got for that high price tag was pretty terrible.

The first red flag appeared before I even fired the gun. After buying it, I went to spend some extra cash on upgrading it and adding some accessories, like a scope or silencer. This is a pretty common part of GTA Online and basically, all of my other guns have similar options. But the Precision Rifle doesn’t have any of this. All you can do is swap out the colors on it. There’s no scope, extended mag, flashlights, or anything. This made me nervous, but I figured at the time that perhaps it was so good it didn’t need that stuff. You read the headline and made it this far so I don’t have to tell you—but I will anyway—I was wrong. So wrong.

Rockstar Games / IQW

In the very first firefight against some random police who started attacking me for no reason at all (don’t look at all the dead bodies around me) I quickly discovered this rifle has a very slow firing rate. It also doesn’t seem any more precise or accurate than most of my other rifles and pistols. Against other players it also doesn’t seem to do much damage, taking three or four body shots to kill a troll trying to annoy you. While it does sound cool, that’s about all this expensive firearm has going for it.

Within the GTA Online community, the feedback from players is mostly negative. The vast majority of players online feel the gun is a ripoff and a waste of money, comparing it to cheaper rifles that have similar or even superior stats. I saw one player compare it to a Nerf blaster. Not a great review of a thing that is supposed to be a deadly weapon.

Adding to the negative reaction is that players were expecting another, different weapon to also be a part of this new update. That gun is the M16-like Service Rifle, a gun that Rockstar teased in screenshots released before Criminal Enterprises was released. But after the update hit, the gun was nowhere to be found. It turns out, via dataminers, that the Service Rifle is coming and will be a reward for completing a scavenger hunt.

Oddly, some players are reporting that when they loaded up the game after the update they found the Service Rifle in their inventory already. This version of the gun seems bugged and it’s all likely an unintended mistake. But at least it’s hard to complain about a crappy, bugged gun when it’s “free”.

Kotaku has reached out to Rockstar about the Service Rifle and if there are any plans to update or change the poorly-received Precision Rifle. Until something changes, I’d suggest you save your money and buy something else. And hey, at least Rockstar nerfed the terrible OP jetbike!

Roddy Ricch busted with firearm, large-capacity ammo mag: NYPD

Grammy-winning rapper Roddy Ricch was busted with a gun – and an extended magazine – at a security checkpoint before he was set to perform at the Governor’s Ball at Citi Field on Saturday night, cops say.

The 23-year-old rapper, whose real name is Rodrick Moore, was in 2020 black Cadillac Escalade with two other men stopped at a security checkpoint around 6:20 p.m. – just hours before the event was set to begin – when an employee with a private security firm hired for the Queens concert spotted the Canik 9mm under a seat, according to police.

Authorities also found an extended magazine that contained nine rounds of ammunition, a police spokesman said.

“The reason we do this checkpoints is for expressly this purpose. We don’t want people introducing guns in this venue,” an NYPD official told The Post on Sunday.

NY gun shop owner who sold firearm to Payton Gendron ‘feels terrible’

An upstate gun-store owner said Sunday he recently sold an assault weapon to accused Buffalo shooter Payton Gendron — and that he “feels terrible” about the teen’s alleged crime.

Robert Donald of Vintage Firearms in Endicott, NY, told The New York Times he learned from federal agents Saturday night that he had recently sold the 18-year-old suspect a Bushmaster assault weapon.

“I knew nothing about it until I got the call from them,” Donald told the outlet. “I couldn’t believe it.”

Gendron previously said in a race-hating manifesto that he planned to use a Bushmaster XM-15 in his assault, which ended up killing 10 people at a supermarket Saturday.

Donald said he didn’t recall specifics about his gun sale to Gendron because of the volume of customers he serves but that two agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives came to his store at 7:30 p.m. to gather paperwork related to the purchase.

The shop’s background check on Gendron had not turned up any red flags, Donald said.

“He didn’t stand out,” he said of the teen. “Because if he did, I would’ve never sold him the gun.

“I don’t understand why an 18-year-old would even do this,” Donald said. “I know I didn’t do anything wrong, but I feel terrible about it.”

Donald said he rarely sells the type of assault rifle sought by Gendron and instead specializes in vintage pistols.

Gendron reportedly modified the firearm to make it more lethal. Donald said the weapon was legally compliant when sold.

“Even with all of those safety features on it — which is the only way I sell it — any gun can be easily modified if you really want to do it,” the gun-shop owner said.

Gendron is accused of targeting black customers after traveling to Buffalo to carry out the shooting.

Wisconsin man was handling firearm that discharged, killing 8-year-old child: ‘Put down the guns’

A Wisconsin man was arrested Saturday after a gun he was handling discharged and killed an 8-year-old girl in Milwaukee, an incident that prompted the city’s acting mayor to ask citizens to “put down the guns” on the heels of a record-breaking year for homicides.

The incident happened around 2:25 p.m. on the 1800 block of West Highland Avenue, the Milwaukee Police Department said.

Police did not immediately release the identities of the man or the child.

Police said the death was being investigated as a homicide and that criminal charges would be referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said, adding that no further information will be released at this time.

Milwaukee Acting Mayor Cavalier Johnson released a statement to FOX6 Milwaukee following the child’s death, calling it “heartbreaking.”

“Mistaken gunfire has extinguished another innocent life,” Johnson said. “I offer my condolences to her family. Please, put down the guns. If you have a gun in your home, secure it with a trigger lock or in a safe. Never, never handle a gun near children.”

The child’s death comes just days after Johnson announced a series of proposals to combat the city’s rising crime after a record-breaking year for homicides, with 205 reported killings in 2021, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Other violent crimes Johnson planned to tackle with his proposals included gun violence, car thefts and reckless driving.

Johnson’s plan included bolstering the city’s police force and contributing resources to provide support to the community.

Johnson took over as acting mayor last month after Mayor Tom Barrrett resigned to become the next U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg.

Video Game Studio Says Kalashnikov Stole MP-155 Ultima Design

The Mastodon shotgun from Oceanic
Image: Oceanic

Ward B, the developers of upcoming FPS Oceanic, have accused Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov of outright stealing one of their weapon designs for a new shotgun that’s being sold commercially.

In an interview with IGN, Ward B CEO Marcellino Sauceda says that early last year a Kalashnikov rep contacted them, said the company loved the studio’s weapon designs and wanted to collaborate, taking one of Oceanic’s shotgun designs—the Mastodon—and turning it into a real firearm.

Ward B say they were promised full credit, a logo on the weapon and even three of the finished product shipped to their offices. While keen to get the deal done, Sauceda says that when the time came to actually sign contracts, they never showed up, and there was no further communication between the parties.

So Sauceda was surprised to later see Kalashnikov go ahead and release their own “weapon kit” that he feels looks a lot like the Mastodon, only without any of the credit or collaboration.

Here’s what the Mastodon looks like, as designed by artist Gankhulug Narandavaa:

And here’s Kalashnikov’s MP-155 Ultima, which the company even went so far as to say was “inspired by video games” in its initial marketing for the weapon:

While they’re not identical, what leads Ward B to believe the design was stolen—aside from their initial correspondence—are elements of the Mastodon which also appear on the Ultima but “which are decisions that were taken for aesthetic reasons in Oceanic, but have no practical purpose in real life.”

Then there’s this:

For Ward B, the clincher was the inclusion of a small indentation on one side of the Ultima – a horizontal L shape with a small line emerging from the corner (also seen in the gallery above). It’s a tiny detail, but one Sauceda sees as crucial, as the team has used it as a visual motif on not just the Mastodon, but multiple Oceanic guns. “Nothing about this gives the receiver stability, it has nothing to do with it because everything is functioning through the internals,” says Sauceda of that design choice. “The fact that they included this indent is kind of… it’s sketchy, because I kind of feel they have the [Mastodon’s 3D model] and they forgot to exclude that part – because they did remove it on the other side with the bolt.”

In their defence, Kalashnikov rep Maxim Kuzin says the initial deal fell through because the indie game’s tentative funding and payment structures meant there was no clear ownership of the weapon designs, and so they worked with “another designer from Russia” instead.

Ward B have since sent a cease and desist to Kalashnikov, and uncovered what they say are some shady shenanigans where Kuzin tried to buy the Mastodon design directly from the artist. They’ve also had the added weirdness of seeing Kalashnikov license the Ultima’s design to another video game, Escape From Tarkov. Meaning that, as far as Ward B are concerned, their gun design has managed to be turned into a real gun then end up in someone else’s video game before it had a chance to appear in their own.

Alec Baldwin was told firearm was unloaded, search warrant says: report

An assistant director on the New Mexico movie set of the movie “Rust” claimed that a gun being handed to actor Alec Baldwin on Thursday was unloaded, a search warrant filed in a Santa Fe court said, according to reports.

“Cold gun,” assistant director Dave Halls announced at the time, using lingo for an unloaded firearm, before a rehearsal for the movie, The Associated Press reported.

Soon afterward, court filings say, Baldwin pulled the trigger of the firearm, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

The gun used by Baldwin was one of three firearms that had been placed on a cart by Hannah Gutierrez, who was identified as the armorer for the film, The Associated Press reported.

COULD ALEC BALDWIN FACE CHARGES AFTER ‘RUST’ MOVIE SET SHOOTING? EXPERTS WEIGH IN

Halls was unaware live rounds were inside the firearm he grabbed and handed to Baldwin, a detective wrote in an application for the search warrant, the AP reported.

How live rounds came to be inside a firearm intended for a movie shooting remained a mystery.

No charges had been filed in connection with the incident, which remained under investigation, according to the Santa Fe Reporter.

“Investigators are attempting to determine what type of projectile was in the firearm,” the sheriff’s office told Fox News in a statement.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office obtained the search warrant Friday as part of efforts to investigate the shooting.

Rust Movie Productions, the company behind the film, is also conducting its own review of what happened, officials said Friday. The company’s statement came amid reports that some crew members were unhappy about the level of gun safety on the movie set. Fox News has not independently confirmed the veracity of the complaints.

Magistrate Judge John Rysanek issued the search warrant, with which investigators sought to examine a bloody shirt worn by Baldwin, all firearms and ammunition present at the scene, and any relevant video evidence that may have been recorded, The Washington Post reported.

The number of rounds fired in the incident was unclear, the AP reported. Gutierrez handed over the firearm used by Baldwin to responding police officers after they arrived at the scene, the report said.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Juan Rios said Baldwin was not immediately facing any charges in the case and was free to travel.

“He’s a free man,” Rios told the AP.

Thursday’s incident happened despite improvements in firearm safety made on movie sets since the 1993 prop-gun death of actor Brandon Lee, son of the late martial-arts film star Bruce Lee.

After Thursday’s incident, production was halted on “Rust,” in which Baldwin’s character was to run off with his grandson after the grandson is sentenced to hang for an accidental killing of a rancher.

Fox News’ Nate Day and The Associated Press contributed to this story.
