AP Top 25 poll: Georgia finishes No. 1, Washington enters top 10 of final college football rankings

USATSI

Georgia finished off a perfect season with a resounding 65-7 win over TCU in the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night to finish No. 1 in the final AP Top 25. The poll marked six straight finishes inside the AP top three for the Bulldogs, including back-to-back No. 1 finishes.

Despite suffering the largest national championship game loss ever, TCU moved up to No. 2 in the final rankings. Ultimately, the finish is still the best for the Horned Frogs since 2010 when they shocked Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. Michigan remained at No. 3 despite losing to TCU in the CFP semifinal, while Ohio State sat firm at No. 4.

Down the ballot, Washington moved into the final top 10 for the first time since 2016 after handling No. 25 Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Penn State also moved up to No. 7 after a dominant Rose Bowl victory over Utah. Florida State should enter 2023 as one of the top teams in the nation thanks to a No. 11 finish and the return of quarterback Jordan Travis.

Check out the full AP Top 25 below. First-place votes are in parentheses.

Google finishes iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets rollout w/ Maps

Google is wrapping up the rollout of its iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets with Maps and Search for a total of six updated iPhone applications.

Version 6.40 of Google Maps introduces a pair of iOS 16 Lock Screen widgets. “Search” opens the app to the corresponding interface with your keyboard immediately ready for input. The 2×1 “Frequent Trips” could be powerful (depending on how often it updates) and notes the location, ETA, and traffic conditions.

  • Frequent Trips: Get directions and an estimated time of arrival for your frequent trips.
  • Search: Search in Google Maps for restaurants, gas stations, and more.

Meanwhile, the Google app has a total of five widgets, starting with two sizes (1×1 and 2×1) for Search. The rest are 1×1, with the last one for Lens possibly based on which filter you frequently use.

  • Search: Access Google Search from your Lock Screen.
  • Voice Search: Ask a question, hum a song, or search for content with your voice.
  • Lens: Search with your camera or any image.
  • Lens Shortcuts: Easily access your favorite Lens feature. Translate, shop, or solve homework with your camera.

These Google Search Lock Screen widgets are particularly well suited to replace Siri.

Maps and Search join Gmail, News, Drive, and Chrome as the first wave of Google apps with iOS Lock Screen widgets. After updating, be sure to launch each application before going to the Lock Screen editor to add or they might not appear.

Geno Smith starts hot, Seahawks D finishes to beat Broncos in Russell Wilson’s return

There was a lot of hope for Geno Smith’s NFL future when he was at West Virginia. He was a heck of a college quarterback.

It didn’t work out for him with the New York Jets and he entered the backup phase of his career. The Seattle Seahawks were mocked for trading Russell Wilson and giving Smith a chance to start.

It took a long time, but Smith finally had the game of his NFL career on a night that Wilson made his return to Seattle.

Smith did most of his damage in the first half, but that was enough. The defense had some huge goal-line stands to make the first-half lead hold up, denying Wilson a chance to beat his former team on his return to Seattle. The Broncos tried a 64-yard field goal with 20 seconds left but Brandon McManus missed, and the Seahawks held on to a 17-16 win. Smith completed his first 13 passes and had a couple first-half touchdowns to give Seattle the lead. Smith cooled down after that but the defense made some clutch plays to make it stand up. The weird decision by the Broncos to let time run in the final seconds and try a desperation field goal will be talked about all week. Wilson probably would have liked the chance to go for it.

The Seahawks aren’t expected to win a lot of games this season, and it remains to be seen how good they’ll be. But winning the opener against their former quarterback had to be pretty sweet. Especially for Smith.

Seahawks take a first-half lead

The Seahawks came out fast. Perhaps it had something to do with the Broncos not playing any key players during the preseason, but Denver was sloppy on both sides. The defense in particular had multiple issues, especially with their linebackers trying to cover tight ends. Geno Smith completed his first 13 passes. Many of his big plays, including both first-half touchdowns, went to tight ends. He was sharp.

The Broncos stayed in the game due to a long pass from Wilson to Jerry Jeudy, when Jeudy caught a contested deep pass and then outran the defense to the end zone for a 67-yard score. Seattle led 17-13 at halftime, and it stayed that way through the third quarter because the Broncos made mistakes near the goal line. That’s another sign of a team that didn’t play in the preseason.

The Broncos went for it on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line and gave it to Melvin Gordon. Gordon fumbled just short of the goal line and Seattle recovered. After Seattle lost a fumble, the Broncos got back inside the 5. This time they tried Javonte Williams, who was hit in the backfield and fumbled. Seattle recovered that one too.

Seattle played well in the first half, and was probably fortunate to get to the fourth quarter with the lead.

Broncos have trouble near the goal line

The Broncos just couldn’t score near the goal line. The Broncos got back inside the 5-yard line in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get in the end zone again and settled for a field goal. They trailed 17-16 after that.

At that point the Seahawks needed Smith to make some plays to keep Wilson on the sideline. Seattle went three-and-out, with two short passes getting stuffed and then Smith being sacked by Bradley Chubb on third down.

Wilson had 4:02 to work with, starting at his own 22. The same fans who booed Wilson before the game had to be nervous. Wilson is masterful at the game-winning drive and had done it many times in that stadium. It was fantastic drama, just as the NFL wanted when it scheduled Wilson’s return for Week 1.

A great reach on a third-down catch by tight end Albert Okwuegbunam got a first down and kept the drive alive. Okwuegbunam was stopped short but had a great effort play to barely get the first down. Wilson hit Williams for another third-down conversion. The Broncos were getting close to field-goal range. The Broncos went backwards on a hurried first-down pass to Williams with the pass rush coming. Wilson threw incomplete, losing the ball as he tried to pull it back. He faced a third-and-14. Williams picked up some yardage on third down to set up fourth-and-5 in the final minute.

The Broncos, who had all three timeouts left, inexplicably let time run down to 20 seconds before calling a timeout. Then the Broncos decided to try a 64-yard field goal instead of going for it. McManus barely missed it wide left. It was a clock management fiasco that led to the decision to go for the field goal. McManus did his best but that’s a field goal not many kickers will make. It would have made more sense to let Wilson go for it.

The Seahawks don’t have Wilson anymore. But they did get a win over him.

NBA 2K23 Summer League Standouts: Wiseman finishes Vegas play with solid effort

James Wiseman finishes with 14 points (4-6 FGs) and 7 rebounds in just 21 minutes of action.

LAS VEGAS – Only a few days remain on the NBA 2K23 Summer League calendar, but we’re still keeping tabs on all the players putting together standout performances. Here are a few from Friday’s action at Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion:

James Wiseman, Golden State Warriors

Jonathan Kuminga led Golden State in scoring (16 points) and dropped a spinning banger of a dunk in the third quarter. But this show belonged to Wiseman, who shot 4-for-6 in just 21 minutes for a Summer-League high 14 points in addition to gobbling up seven rebounds, a pair of assists and a block in Golden State’s 90-82 loss to Oklahoma City.

Too bad we missed out on the potential matchup between Wiseman, the No. 2 pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, and Chet Holmgren, the second pick of 2022. The Thunder announced Holmgren would sit out of Friday’s contest to rest. The game represented Golden State’s final game of Summer League. Still, the Warriors should feel encouraged about what they saw here in Las Vegas, as both Wiseman and Kuminga routinely flashed the skills that should make them quality, dependable contributors next season as they defend their championship.

Brandon Boston Jr., LA Clippers

Brandon Boston Jr. scores a game-high 22 points and adds 8 rebounds in the Clippers’ Summer League win over the Jazz.

Boston poured in 13 of his game-high 22 points in the final frame of LA’s 82-65 victory over the Utah. Trailing 56-50 going into the fourth quarter, the Clippers outscored the Jazz 32-9 down the stretch, as Boston drilled 4-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-3 from 3-pont range in addition to nabbing a steal and dishing two assists in the rally.

We’ve long known Boston gets buckets, but the second-year guard out of Sierra Canyon is looking to diversify his game. We saw as much Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center, two days after his rough 3-for-15 in a loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Johnny Juzang and Leandro Bolmaro, Utah Jazz

Leandro Bolmaro finishes with 19 points (8-15 FGs) and 6 rebounds in Friday’s Summer League action.

Juzang fizzled somewhat in his Jazz debut on Jul. 9, finishing 1-for-6 from the floor and 0-for-4 from 3-point range while working back to form from a concussion suffered in early July during a car accident. The head injury forced Juzang to miss the entire Salt Lake City Summer League. But there’s a reason Utah signed the former UCLA standout to a two-way contract after the 2022 NBA Draft concluded with the guard going undrafted.

The rookie showed why in the first contest of Friday’s slate, reeling off a game-high 11 points in the opening half on 3-for-6 accuracy from deep.  That early hot streak would cool considerably in the second half with Juzang making just 3-for-13 for 14 points with four rebounds. Over his first three outings in Las Vegas, Juzang averaged just 6.7 points on 27.3% from the field and 38.5% from range. So, it appears the 2021-22 All-Pac-12 first teamer might be finally settling in, which is promising, considering the revamped Jazz might benefit from the rookie’s sharp shooting if he can earn minutes. He’ll need to improve the streakiness to make that happen.

As for Bolmaro, the 23rd pick of the 2020 NBA Draft bounced back from shaky showings over the first three games of the Summer League on Friday with 19 points on 8-for-15 from the field to go with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Despite those numbers, Bolmaro could stand to improve as a playmaker (no assists, four turnovers).

Grant Riller, Philadelphia 76ers

Grant Riller talks postgame after his 18-point performance in just 18 minutes of action.

Riller delivered a thriller at Cox Pavilion with 13 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, as Philadelphia seized a 21-point lead at intermission over Denver on the way to a 97-71 win. Coming off the bench, Riller hit the Nuggets in seemingly every way imaginable from a variety of spots, knocking down 5-for-7 from the field and 2-for-3 from distance over the first two frames.

Charlotte made Riller the 56th overall pick of the 2020 Draft, and he played seven games as a rookie on a two-way contract, averaging 2.6 points, before joining the Sixers in August of 2021 on another two-way deal. Knee and shoulder injuries have slowed Riller’s ascension with the Sixers up to this point, but it’s encouraging to see the 25-year-old hold up health-wise while flashing his mettle on the floor.

Keegan Murray, Sacramento Kings

Keegan Murray finishes with 21 points and 10 rebounds, including a 3-pointer to beat the 1st-quarter buzzer.

Murray entered the action on Friday ranked among the top five in Summer League scoring, and only continued his run of dominance in Sacramento’s 82-69 triumph over the Phoenix Suns. The No. 4 overall pick scored 10 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, in addition to ending the night with 10 rebounds, an assist and one block.

Murray drained 4-for-8 from 3-point range as Sacramento splashed 3-pointers at a 41.7% clip. The 21-year-old entered Friday’s contest averaging 24 points points on 47.7% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc to go with 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. This kid will only continue to flourish working with new Kings coach Mike Brown, and we can’t wait to see it.

Tiger Woods finishes tied for 39th at JP McManus Pro-Am, where Xander Schauffele wins

Tiger Woods closed with a 2-over 74 to finish tied for 39th on Tuesday at the JP McManus Pro-Am, a star-studded event in Limerick, Ireland, that served as a tuneup for next week’s Open Championship.

The good news for Woods was that Tuesday’s round marked a slight improvement from his opening 77 on Monday. The highlights were back-to-back birdies at the par-4 15th and par-3 16th, before a slipup at the 18th, where he carded the last of his four bogeys on the day.

The crowd, though, hardly seemed to mind. He was met with big applause on the 18th and some fans chanted “Tiger, Tiger!” as he walked off the final green at Adare Manor.

Next up for Woods will be the 150th Open Championship at famed St. Andrews starting July 14. It will mark his third official event since suffering serious leg injuries in a car wreck outside Los Angeles in February 2021. He finished 47th at the Masters in April, then withdrew after the third round of the PGA Championship in May. He skipped the U.S. Open last month because of some problems with his surgically repaired leg.

One name to watch at St. Andrews will be Xander Schauffele. On the heels of his PGA Tour triumph at the Travelers last week, Schauffele went 64-70 for a 10-under total and a 1-shot win over fellow American Sam Burns at the JP McManus. His opening-round 64 tied the low round of the pro-am (Padraig Harrington carded the same Tuesday), and he followed it with a three-birdie, one-bogey Round 2.

Schauffele, like many big-name players, is in the field for this week’s Scottish Open.

Other notable finishes in the 49-player field (Jordan Spieth was disqualified Monday) at the JP McManus included: Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy (5-under total, tied for sixth); Dustin Johnson (3 under, tied for 13th); Bryson DeChambeau (1 under, tied for 21st); and Scottie Scheffler (even, tied for 23rd).

Leona Maguire, the LPGA Tour member from Ireland and the only woman in the field, went 72-76 to finish tied for 33rd.
